6mm building tutorials or tips?
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:37:32 PM »
For my vsf 6mm project I'm looking to construct a town or two of 6mm west European style buildings, however I've found there to be a surprising lack of material on this subject out there. I would have thought that with many people doing anything from napoleonics to ww 2 in this scale there would be something on making buildings like this but for now all I've found is focused on sci-fi.  I'm already contemplating just 3d printing it all, and maybe making a mould, but I would prefer to at least give hand crafting a shot first.

I've got a few tips, tutorials and reviews on my website but I'm not sure what sort of info you are after? Do you want to know how to scratch built buildings or make general terrain?

http://6mm.wargaming.info/index.htm

Otherwise ask away as there is lots of stuff that hasnt made it to my site yet.

Buildings definitely, everything else I figured out by now. Your page helps quite a bit already. However I'm still struggling with doors, windows and roofing details.

Irregular sell a pack of doors and windows and they are quite nice. I also made some from greenstuff by pushing plasticard squares into them. Ii'll see if I can find the photos.

Funny I just stumbled into those irregular packs last night by chance. Glad to hear somebody is positive about them, Irregular does have some varying quality.

I painted up a resin 6mm SF building recently that had used ho/oo scale ladders as window frames. They'd used four rungs to create a row of three windows, and it worked suprisingly well.

Not sure if it would be a suitable VSF look, but worth considering. I'll see if I have any work in progress pics that show them.

I've a couple of how-to's on my defunct blog, a very simple build from years ago

and basing that:

A few examples and tips on my never ending 6mil thread on here:

You're spoilt on ready mades nowadays, and 6mmfan has links to all of them, and loads of other neat stuff - but it's the best 6mm site on the web so no surprise there.

IanH has a good site too, with an interesting idea of using printouts to clad plasticard to make quite acceptable buildings:

GHQ has it's own forum, which can be useful occassionally
http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=33ac925f5d63d3c6ee494ca133f4ecca

They also have a pile of free downloadable paper buildings

I bought a pack of those Irreg building details... I sold them on ebay.  :-I

yes the Irregular door and windows are good, depending on the period you want them for. Sorry I thought had some pictures but I must have dropped those - I'll see if I can find more. Here is some of the pieces

Also the Irregular gates are good

Thanks for the replies guys!

Phil your work is inspiring! I really should just sit down and try to build something from plasticard like that. Thanks for taking the time to link to all those things, it really does help a lot.

6mmFan, those pictures help a lot! They look OK but most of those things aren't in a style I'm looking for. Your right the gates do look good, and they have a very tempting price.

Once again I'm tempted to do some 3d prints of the finer detail parts. Maybe if I could convince somebody to cast them up it would be worth the effort/materials...

I've been mulling windows more (in addition to the ladders thing I posted earlier. I have taken a picture of that, but haven't uploaded it yet).

Another thing that may be worth looking into is plastic canvas (so called Granny Grating) - Amazon link.

The squares are approx 3mm internally, 5mm on the outside. The plastic is quite flexible, so I'm going to do some tests, but I reckon pva or tacky glue will hold it.

Granny grating is used a lot in sci-fi terrain for grates so I'm sure there is some way to glue it down.
