Do you have many rivers to cross Jimmy? Or is it a case of 'the harder they come'?

Excellent cliffage, sir!  :-* I have to say it was a pleasant surprise to see a Man O'War ship pop up.

Man, you are one of the best modelers on this forum, hands down.  And, um, I'm not with the cheering crowd.  Not yet.  Not on this one.  Oh, the cliff work is fine as it stands.  But it doesn't even suggest your original inspiration photo.  Is there more color to come, was the lighting messed up for the photos of your cliff work?  I instantly loved the photo which inspired you.  I don't love your work this time (as opposed to being in awe of your Dorset work).  Don't mean to put a damper on your enthusiasm but I, for one, say you can do better.  Well, if you want to.  It works as is, just doesn't match for me.

You may consider me a cad - or you may accept the challenge.  Choice is all yours, but I know you can rise to it if you make that choice - pun only slightly intended.  Me, I've added creating such cliffs as in the photo to my personal collection.  That photograph is truly awesome.

I certainly don't consider you a cad, it's good to get some constructive criticism  :)

To be honest, I'm not fully happy with it myself (and it was only a tester to be fair).

I can also be quite lazy sometimes and in this case I was happy with the result for the minimal amount of time spent on it.

I think if it were for a diorama or a museum then I would certainly spend more time getting it right but as its for wargaming and the photo was only for inspiration I'm going stick with it as it is  :)

cheers

I've been studying your piece to understand why I'm not as thrilled as others.  The foliage on top works just fine and you did a truly great job with the waterline discolorations at the base.  But there are three things that 'bother' me.

One is probably a manageability choice and that is scale, the cliff in the photograph would dwarf a person and maybe even a super tanker; like I said, just a choice so I understand that - who can store a super taker dwarfing model?  Then there is the base, you really needed to add more rocks at the base to match the photo - that would have helped a lot.  But the real challenge to my eye is the basic coloring of the cliffs - way too orangey to my eye compared to the photograph.  Had you gone with a range of raw sienna colors I'm pretty sure I would have 'seen' the photograph in your work.  And I realize part of this may be down to photograph, lighting, and computer color reproduction issues.

When I try to replicate that photo, I will use a white base coat with a very, very thin black wash with just a hint of a darkish blue added in.  And then use maybe three to five shades of raw sienna to get the coloring effect - what really drew me into the inspiring photo to start.  Actually, I might go with a burnt sienna for the shadow effect which would probably leave out the blue - unless added to the white base, even more subtle there.  Also, some highlighting of the base white, but very light touch on that.

And, of course, in the end it is a finished piece ready for gaming and that trumps everyone's opinion.  Why, even mine!   lol

Oh, and I'm going to 'cheat' and use a rubber rock mold to get the texturing I'll want to resemble that cliff - especially since I'll be wanting a 15 mm gaming cliff.  I think I'd go insane trying to carve the intricacies of that cliff face to match that scale.  I just might have the mold I'd use in my collection already.  Now it just has to get in the project line - which is obscenely long.

To be fair, I am colour blind (not overly so but enough to throw me on subtle colour changes).

Of course  lol
