Where do US gamers source mdf sheet?
« on: August 07, 2016, 05:22:49 PM »
Just curious where most US gamers are sourcing 3mm or so MDF sheets for basing large terrain bits?  I always see it mentioned casually "picked up some MDF sheets to base my buildings on..." but I've no idea where people are finding them most of the time.  Is there a source, or are people simply ordering from laser-cutting shops?  Favourite links?

Home Depot or Menard's

You can save big money at Menard's.

Yeah, I'm in Canada - I don't think we have Menard's here. But the stuff is dirt cheap at Home Despot anyway, so no big deal.

Hmmm, okay.  Hadn't seen it but I wasn't looking overly hard.  So people are buying it in large sheets and cutting to size. That makes far more sense.  I thought people had a secret online source of cut-to-size MDF sheets.  That'll work.  Thanks!

I have just made a load of tree bases for a friend using 2mm MDF and to save time on chamfering the edges I bought a Ryobi Belt/disc sander instead of using my Dremel. So easy  :)

Lowe's.  Ask for hardboard.

Be aware that hardboard (hdf) and mdf are similar but not the same thing. Depending on the application it can make a difference. Many of the mdf sheets sold at Lowes and Home Depot are not mdf but rather hdf, Lowes website for several years even said they were identical.

Hardboard (HDF) in the US is usually textured one side and smooth on the other. It also is darker in color.

MDF is typically a lighter tan and smooth on both sides.

AFAIK the stuff sold in the USA is not metric thickness, but 1/8" or 1/4" or some odd x/16"
Maybe Canadian source is metric?  Maybe they are importing that now & passing it off as standard Imperial size?
