Suitable Late Byzantine figures?
« on: 09 August 2016, 08:49:53 AM »
Hi

As a complete newbie to this period I would like to ask if anyone fields a 28mm late Byzantine army? I was thinking of first crusade period-will the Gripping Beast plastic set work?

I have painted a Lion Rampant religious order and just purchased some Normans....and as this is fairly addictive it would be nice to know what people are using for the Byzantine empire.

Thanks in advance

If it is Lion Rampant then I would build mine out of Perry's Armenians from their First Crusades line. The only catch is that you will have lots of doubles as I believe the Byzantine forces were quite uniform so all your armoured troops would look alike and there are not a lot of different poses in the range.

Hello hope you are well, as suggested the perry miniature Armenians would be fine take a look at the gripping beast Byzantines and you could use the plastic Vikings as Varangians (mercenaries) you can still use your religious order as allies. Crusader miniatures does Byzantine Rum aswell good luck inshallah.  :)

To stay with Codstickers excellent suggestion, I think the Turcopoles from the Perry's Crusader range would make good Eastern mercenaries and the Arabized crusader knights and the likes would be suitable for Latinikoi (aka Western mercenaries).

Also, don't forget the mounted Armenians in that range too  :)

I am building a Byzantine army and I would heartily recommend the Gripping Beast range. The figures have alot of character and the range is quite extensive.

The Crusader range is okay but for me the figures are quite small and they lack character compared to their other ranges.

Not the best picture - sorry. I will try and post some more. The commander is a GW Rohan Royal Guard figure.

Thank you all for the advice....I had no idea that there were so many manufacturers covering this army. As it is going to be a Lion Rampant force I may go for the Gripping Beast Chaps as it should be affordable in stages. Such a pity that the plastics will not work.

Thanks for the help-loved the Rohan figure by the way!

That is a good point- from my superficial reading you could put Rus (Varangians), Normans (Franks) and Turks (any Steppe cavalry) or Turcopoles in a Lion Rampant warband and it could realistically be a Byzantine force composed entirely of mercenaries.
