Borodino battlefield & panorama

Just got back from Russia and I've made two reviews, one of the Borodino museum of Moscow and another from the battlefield itself. Lots of travelling tips if you go there someday.

Great blog! Despite having been to Moscow many times I have never found time to hit this museum...although I have managed to go to the Museum of the Great Patriotic War up the road....now that is impressive. Next time around I will have to find time to go to the Borodino one. As for a trip to Borodino, how long did your train trip take you? Is it doable in a day?

The panorama visit just takes an hour really plus another of metro travel, also the victory park it's right there and it's quite spectacular for a walk.
The train takes two hours and a quarter, the visit around five hours on foot. If you pick the 8:18 one you can be back with the 16:00 one and be in Moscow by 18:00. So yes it can be done in a day with plenty of time left. If you wanna visit the Borodino & Gorky villages you can always return with one at 20:00.

Cheers for that, managed to get to St Petersburg a few years ago and loved Russia, definitely on the bucket list.

I did both of them back in 2011 whilst my brother-in-law was working in Moscow. By car (I borrowed my B-I-L's chauffeur for the day) the trip also took about two hours because central Moscow is so congested with traffic. The train sounds like a good option. The battlefield visit was excellent.

Both museums, surly babushkas not withstanding, are well worth a visit. I didn't like Moscow much (plenty to see but not very welcoming), so I'm glad I got as much in as possible. I might go to St. Petersburg in the future, but Moscow is not on my 'see again' list.

As said the Great Patriotic War Museum is also well worth a look. The tank park outside (almost on a different site and not that well signed) is packed with interesting stuff, including lots of lend lease kit.

I think everyone who has been there can agree that Moscow is only worth one visit, those soviet buildings are hideous!

Moscow's buildings and art are great!!!!! That said, the people in Moscow are not a friendly lot...you have to go well outside to get to know the real Russians.

In terms of Hobby stores, I always go to Club TM, located in one of the old Olympic stadiums (the Russians converted the space into shopping areas!).

The staff do speak English and the shop has a massive collection of most everything hobby related, including some great books. I remember my first visit I went around the shop picking up some boxes off the shelf...and a shop assistant was ghosting me and putting the items back...I was thinking, don't they want my roubles...but then I found out that all the stock you buy comes from the back...the Russians have strange ways of doing things. Whenever I am in Moscow for work I always try to get there. A short walk from the metro.

Thank you for the tour. You took some great photos and I for one appreciate you sharing them with myself and others. I almost felt like I had been there myself and was reviewing photos of a trip I would have taken, but sadly probably never will.
