An Airship For My Quar - A Quairship?
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:35:16 PM »
Having seen inspirational airships here and elsewhere, I decided to make an airship myself. Searching my garage for some parts, I discovered a large Playdoh Easter Egg with some kneading stuff inside. While looking at the shape, I thought by myself "Hey, why not building an airship with it?".  o_o o_o
It consists of two halves: one yellow half and one clear half. I decided to use the clear half for the measurements. It turned out that the plastic was quite stubborn and doesn't sit too well on my cutting mat, but with a little work by double-sided adhesive tape I showed it who's the boss.
Then I drew a center-line from bow to stern and two parallel lines to the left and the right of it at a distance of 15mm.
So I set out making templates for the fins and give them a rough shape before glueing them to the place.
Time for a nice cutting-out action:

I plan to build in some LED's and a movable ramp as well, so I'm in for some works concerning the design of the cabin. Basically, this was a straight-forward affair and has a box-like appearance which is inserted into the cut-out section. The reason for this is that the whole cabin has to sit in a straight edge and some additional space is needed for the wiring and the battery. At this stage I don't care about fine details. The whole surface needs to be sanded and filled with GS anyway.

Time for some electronics...

I love Quar.  I agree with Svenn; intriguing start with an interesting shape.  Can't wait to see where you go with this.

looking good so far. :)

Its interesting seeing this and Ray Rivers Flyer come together. I like seeing how they evolve to the finished article.

Trencher, this is great!! You holding back this info from another forum?! I've got a Quar airship project I'm starting, based on the old Hawk/Testors Graf Zeppelin kit (the vac-formed one). Great start on this. Keep the posts coming!

Yesterday, I returned from a short and involuntary "vacation", spent in a hospital. My nose kept on bleeding so they had to stuff a lot of things into it to finally stop it.  :-X :-X :'(
But now I am back and fine again.
While writing this, I am working on the interior of the airships cabin. I still plan to introduce some LED lighting, powered by a 3V battery. I hope to have some pics up soon.

The old Hawk/Testors kit: That's the quite big one (IIRC 978mm length...)- eh?  :o

I hope your nose is better, my friend. Probably bled due to the stress of assembling all your projects at once!! :o
Das ist richtig: no forum-jumping until project completion - I won't even mention it elsewhere. The Hawk/Testors kit is indeed a monster. I have two - the vacuum-formed, and the hard styrene. The vac is being prepped & repaired, as it's torn in several places. I'm trying to decide between having the kit with a hanging crew compartment like the WWI observation balloons, or done up like a regular VSF/Aeronef crew platform. Or a combination of both.
  Any suggestions?

Well, my nose still looks like a blimp, but that should be a reminder to get things completed... lol lol lol

As for your airship, I would go for a regular cabin and an observation car (e.g. a 1/32 drop tank with appropriate fins...), maybe retractable - depending on your skills.
Don't be afraid of using a winch for it - LEGO is your friend there and you've got more than enough space to acommodate all that things...
*shakes head*
