Didn't understand a word of it,  but I am guessing they are fighting against Mongolians?  :D
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Why is the Europeans can make historical epics with decent costumes and armour and we get crap like 300 or The Last Kingdom?

Thanks for the link. I understand it's a film about the Russian warrior Evpaty Kolovrat who fought against the Mongols in the 13th century.

I am not sure they are any more accurate, just less familiar. The film did look a bit 300ish

I think it's important to remember that 300 was an adaptation of a graphic novel, not so much a historical film.

There's less excuse for things like The Last Kingdom and Vikings though. I mean, I love the Vikings TV show, but some of those costumes are a bit... interesting.

And The Last Kingdom is based on a novel series, right?

Vikings is pure fiction borrowing "elements" (really just character names/roles) from "history" (disputable sagas), and while awfully outlandish I'll say one thing in its defense: I personally like that their portrayal of the Vikings is neither particularly noble nor altogether brutal and sadistic.

It is one of relatively few mainstream media portrayals of Vikings that seems to eschew contemporary morality for the Norse protagonists, and (from my itty bit of Icelandic Saga reading) is at least somewhat accurate in its depiction of their attitudes, if not accurate in much else  lol

The first episode of The Last Kingdom was great, IMO, but basically everything that followed has been trash.  Too bad, as I was very much looking forward to something a bit more grounded to replace Vikings (which I still watch, but consider to be pretty much a fantasy show alongside GoT at this point).

You're missing the fact that it looks exactly like the 300--over saturated monochromatic palette, wild slo-mo action sequences--if there's CGI blood we'll be set. I also reserve judgment on the "historical accuracy" until I see more of the Mongols. And if it really is the Mongol Conquest it'll also be a hopeless heroic  last stand by the Russians with everyone being killed or subjugated! Anyway, looks like it has potential...

Looks like a fun popcorn movie...smacked heavily of 300 influence.  I don't remember the Russians doing particularly well against the Mongols so I'll imagine this ends poorly for them.
