Building up Kent forces for 3EW (pics)
« on: February 02, 2009, 02:21:29 PM »
I'll start my operations in Kent by the seeside. Not a huge number of figures yet, but I'll share them here anyway...

Kent LDV units were mostly recruited from and based in towns, some of the more famous ones being the Eastgate and Walmington-on-Sea platoons (battle hardened soldiers, you know...  lol).  Picture shows an LDV unit just after securing a village.  Transport is waiting nearby to pick'm up.

Battle in the streets of a Kent town.  (To the left) BUF auxiliaries take on more than they can chew: a KAW (pronounced "cow" - Kent Agricultural Workers) unit supported by a re-enlisted Whippet tank.  The KAW and LDV were lucky to get some of these elderly machines from a dubious scrap dealer by the name of Walker who acquired some in the 1920's planning to sell these as tractors.  This didn't work, but he is now prepared to part with them for a small fee (all for the good cause...  lol).

Thought this question would pop up...

It's a MATCHBOX MODEL OF YESTERYEAR Y29-1 1919 ELECTRIC VAN, fairly common and cheap (around £2 on Ebay).  The model has a flat front to which I added a 2x2 lego "roofbrick" (with a 40° slope); it fits exactly.  The lego brand was filled from the two studs and two 2mm plastic rod pieces were added to give the "headlights" some depth (but this is not really a must).  The radiator grille is made of a tiny piece of plastic wire mesh (you know, to keep the flies out).  A couple of hex bolt heads and a small strip of plasticards were glued to the sides and one to the top of the mesh (for the radiator cap).  The bumper is a small piece of plastic beam. It's a very simple conversion (and one that can be copied repeatedly in a very easy way), but it gave me a vehicle I head been looking for for a number of years: a WWI'ish truck as can be seen in many vintage documentaries (the hood of the electric van being the issue).  The whole thing was then repainted in appropriate colours, et voilà.  The actual conversion takes only about 15 minutes.

I thought it was that model, but the front looked strange to me.  Nice conversion.  I'm thinking the boxes on the undercarriage were also added?  I've actually lost a eBay couple bids on that model.

Very atmospheric! And beautiful models. Any chance of listing the miniature companies used?

No, apart from the engine, I didn't change the model at all.

Nice collection you've got going there. Looks like PMC is still doing a good trade with the buildings.
Don't!
