WSS Rules - Help needed (again!)

Greetings folks,
After deliberating between WSS or 7YW to start gaming in 2017, I've settled on WSS. Now the question is: What Rules?

I've got a pdf copy of Beneath the Lily Banners and they look quite decent. The eye candy in the book looks very pretty. I play ECW using Pike & Shotte but I don't want games that play like my ECW games because it will just seem like the same game with different uniforms. I don't know much about the early 18th Century so I'd like to know other people's opinions of these rules as well as recommendations for other rules.

One stipulation is that I'm looking for rules that are designed for 28mm or 15mm (I'm still not settled on scale at this stage but Ebor & Front Rank figures are looking like good choices).

Donnybrook rules look pretty good for skirmish sized games and maybe Maurice for big battles?

BLB for me, good rule set. Figures Warfare, Ebor are the best in my opinion, I also have loads of different manufacturers in my hordes, Foundry, Dixon, Parkfield etc. There really are loads of great figures out there.

Maurice are fun rules.  More a game than a simulation.
I toyed with the idea of playing this era and bought some Ebor miniatures and tried the Wargames Factory plastic infantry.
Ebor miniatures are great and I don't think the Wargames Factory miniatures are as bad as many reviews would make you believe - you just need to find a way to de-emphasise the goggle eyes. 
If you were thinking 18mm I think Khurasan look very nice.

We played quite a bit of Maurice a few years ago, but kind of lost interest in it. It becomes more of a card game, which happens to have some miniatures associated with it.

I have to say, I'm not a fan of Sam Mustafa's rules.

I use Black Powder for AWI and as I am also about to enter the WSS arena I feel they will also work well for this period.

For commercial sets I like BLB2 but found they can be a little predictable when firing and fighting.

Mechanics are simple and easy to pick up. There are a number of optional or historic period rules you can add or leave out to tailor your games to flow like you want...

I am using Black Powder for Great Northern War which is the same period, I particularly like that you can amend them to suit quite simply.

In terms of figures Ebor are lush and very cheap if you take their deals. Front rank also very nice but wont mix with Ebor. Wargames factory can come up very nicely, the musketeer figures are really nice, but I couldn't get the multi part officers and musicians to work well so I use Plastics WF with metal Ebor command and they work really well.

I used the Wargames Factory figures for my WSS Black Powder games.  I really like them and think they turn out very well with a bit of care and a modicum of modelling skill. Really don't deserve the reputation they have been given.



I have a few surplus boxes for sale on the sales/trades threads currently.

Agree with Rob, and Sarge Canard the Grenadier is tipsy not drunk, although it illustrates my point that one figure on each sprue you build from scratch can sometimes not build as well as the one that just needs a head adding!

Thanks for the replies. I'm still not sold on any particular set of rules yet. But that's why I started this topic, so that I can get some advice before I start this project next year.

Those Wargames Factory figures do look a lot better than I thought.
