Chrome Warriors
« on: September 27, 2016, 07:50:52 PM »

Chrome Warriors is a miniatures game set in a Cyberpunk setting. The world of Chrome Warriors is bright, but dystopian where small groups of agents, gangers and mercenaries fight their skirmishes in the shadows. They struggle both in the physical world as in the digital frontier of Cyberspace.

Playtest version
I have been working for quite some time on the rules, but finally a playtest version is finished. Basically it is a first version of the basic rules set to play games. There are no rules for linked games or campaigns, I aim to write an expansion once the basic rules are finished. I think it’ll be an awesome feat to finish a basic rules system, let alone fully-fledged campaign rules! In the rules you will find only 2 missions, the rest will be done later. But with 2 it is a good start and it can be played. There is room for *way* more. I want to add stuff like a campaign system, rules for mechas, for vehicles, for drugs…there is a lot of potential for expansions. Some will be very small and other will be larger.

In the Playtest version you will find the following:

1)      Chrome Warriors rules
2)      Chrome Warriors tokens & templates
3)      Chrome Warriors character cards
4)      Chrome Warriors Cyberspace map (optional feature)
5)      Chrome Warriors Cyberpunk Event Deck
6)      Chrome Warriors cover art

So a lot of stuff is “finished”, making it a playable system. Some of the art and wording can be tweaked, but for now it should be playable (and hopefully, fun!).
In my rules set I aimed for a small skirmish game, so 4-12 miniatures per player. Why? Because I like that best and it fits the genre well.

Now what am I looking for?
I’m putting these links on the web with the idea to get feedback. Feedback is essential to make the stuff better and more fun. Preferably honest feedback. Really, as honest and plain as you can be. So if you think something sucks, say so. No problem and my feelings won’t get hurt :) (I make training materials for a living, so I am quite used to receiving blunt feedback :D). If you think rules don’t work, say so. If you think a rule should work otherwise because you don’t like it (taste wise), say so. I will go through all of them and see what will change.
Note I am not a native English speaker, so I can imagine the English will be wonky here and there. If you see something odd, please let me know. In the end I aim for a cool product which is fun to play.

Will I ever release it?
I plan to get it printed at Kablam (like Dave from Pulp Alley does) and maybe have some printed copies for sale. People who contribute will receive a free printed copy for any work involved. All of the artwork is either Creative Commons 0 (CCO), owned stock images or self-made. Nothing is ‘ripped’ from the web, so no problems there. But if you if have cool art (or pictures of your miniatures) you want to contribute you are more than welcome!
But no Kickstarter for Chrome Warriors, people...;)

Now if you don’t feel like playtesting it or you don’t have the time, no hard feelings at all! It is a hobby after all. So go at it the way you want. So if you download them and play them it’s cool. After all, that’s the whole idea about creating rules :)

If you have any questions, please ask!

Here’s the link to all material. It’s a dropbox link (because it is a lot) and you are free to share it. No problems.

Cheers and thanks again!

Ooh I'll definitely take a look at this when I get home. I have your Pulp Alley Cyberpunk rules (I think they were the latest version...) saved somewhere that I was planning to use but specific rules could be cool.

Lack of campaign rules off the bat kind of sucks but understandable given the complexities.

I'd probably jump on this but I haven't the figures or the terrain to convince myself I can play Sci-fi just yet.  I'm tired of pushing my 40K models around my Old West scenery.  lol

Thanks guys, really appreciate you spending time to take a look at it 8)
And yes, a campaign is high on the priority list. Playing one-off games is fun, but a campaign is the way to make it shine.
@Elbows: 40k models in old west scenery sounds like a good Inquisimunda game ;). But playing a new genre/type of game can be hard with all the scenery needed. It's one of the reasons I haven't started playing Fallout games...
And for Cyberpunk my personal view is that the scenery is an integral part of the look and feel. It's almost like an extra character present. But that takes a LOT of work and time to get it done.

Malebolgia,

Looking through the rules I had a question.  In the action section the rules say if a model has 2 actions it can move/shoot, move/move, or shoot/shoot.  However, in the shooting section the rules state a model can shoot once per activation, but can shoot mutiple times out of activation with bullet time.  Which is correct?

Good catch! The shoot/shoot combo is wrong. Only one shoot/burst per activation. I will correct the document within the hour!

Salcor, I think I changed it. I couldn't find the "move/shoot, move/move, or shoot/shoot" anymore in the rules (but I think it used to be there in the past...) but I changed the wording on the Shoot and Burst actions. And did some small tweaks here and there. If you spot the wrong quotes, let me know the page number and I will change it ASAP. Either it's not there anymore or I just can't find it :)

I'm a bit surprised this isn't getting any more attention. Is this your only playtest topic or are there more "out there"?

Anywho, some small points:

Page 5 typo "Characxter tier"

Page 8 when rolling multiple multiple dice for initiative do you take the higest roll or do the numbers stack? I assume the later but might be worth pointing out. Also how does Neural Processor work with this, since that is a roll +1d10 take highest effect? Also do multiple processors in the team stack and how does that work?

Page 5 and page 12 does a trained skill specialist get 4 abilities? This appears a bit out of place, the example character has 2 and veterans only get 3.

Page 14: do all these abilities stack? could I have somebody with a Magnum-Shotgun-Pistol-SMG and would those effects all count in one shot?

page 14 flash bangs says: "any character hit by grenade" should probably be "this grenade" or flash bang instead of grenade.

Page 24 "The reacting player gets to spend one action and then announces what action the reacting model takes." I'm not entirely sure what this sentence is supposed to mean.

Page 25 could use some layout work, the sentence "If the game does not involve a primary mission in Cyberspace, then count this data package also as a secondary mission" doesn't seem related to any particular thing.

page 26 its a bit confusing that one real world action gives you 2 cyberspace actions. maybe use a different term for cyberspace actions? (commands or codes maybe?)

Cyberspace: I think an example/explanation of hacking with multiple hackers could be useful, do they share the same RAM pool? if they cross the paths of a friendly hacker do you stack ram tokens on those locations? Now I do like the idea of having a "script kiddy" team of green hackers.  :D

Cyberspace map: This could use a special icon to note where the data packages start out.

All in all though a cool set of rules. I can see the Alley heritage but it also clearly has become its own thing by now. I am now strongly contemplating wether I want to go 15mm with the few ghosts of ... miniatures I have lying around plus the stack of 15mm drones and robots and what not, or if I want to invest into 28mm sci-fi stuff.

Thanks man! Really cool you read it so well. Good feedback
*Page 5 typo fixed.
*Page 8: Sentence added: The players pick the highest result from their rolled dice to determine Initiative.
*Page5+12: I don’t see where you get the 4 abilities from? It’s 1 ability for each level (so 1=1, 2=2, 3=3). Could you elaborate on the 4, so I can see if I have to explain it more clearly in the rules?
* Page 14: Added text “Characters can have multiple weapon abilities (marked with [w]), but can use one at a time. Players should declare which one they are using.”
* Page 14: Changed Grenade to Frag Grenade and clarified the text
* Page 24: Changed the sentence to: The reacting player gets to spend one Move, Shoot or Close Combat action.
* Page 25: Added an asterisk to the ‘P’ and changed that sentence to: “*If the game does not involve a primary mission in Cyberspace, then count this data package also as a secondary mission.”. Also changed this on Page 28.
* Page 26: Good call and I like the idea of ‘Commands’! So I changed all the wording in the Gigabyte version to Commands.
* Multiple hackers: good one! Added a new chapter about multiple friendly hackers.
* Cyberspace map: I agree, some clear image on the hubs with data packages is needed. And I will add 2 more tracks for RAM-tokens, so you can easily play it with 3-4 players too.

New document uploaded. Thanks again!!

@aliensurfer: that would be awesome 8)

Page 5 and 12 the example trained skill character Lilly N2N0 (love the name) has a 4 on her card for abilities. Since use use this card in the chart of what each character level does its very confusing.   o_o

Doh! That card is totally wrong! Should be 2. After working for hours and hours on this document I just don't see these things anymore. So good you're checking it 8)

Any chance you can zip up the cards or something? Kind of annoying to have to click through and save every image individually.
