Unless you need hundreds of them I'd buy metal ponies and avoid the inevitable disappointment that is WFactory's horse sculpt. The Gripping Beast model looks spot on.

Haha, I just got the WGF celtic cavalry in the box. I've got copies of both their saxon fyrd and viking hirdmen boxes, so I sort of know what I'm looking at when I get some WGF plastics, but I was still disappointed.

But it's strange, on the one hand I hate these ponies because they're stupid, fat little bastards. But on the other hand I love them, because they're stupid, fat little ponies. Not sure yet if I'll use them or buy some metals, it will depend on how much work it takes to greenstuff their heads on.

Sorry to hear your disappointment, but yes - I warned that they're stupid, fat little bastards. And yes, they're average WGF sculpts but their stumpy charm trumps that.

Within the WF range there are varying levels of quality. The celts, Germans and Romans are their earliest work, and it shows when comparing the crispness of detail against their later dark ages offerings. Still size-wise their ancient ponies are your closest plastic match to later highland ponies, and they do still have a certain charm. I have a bunch of their ancient celt cavalry sat awaiting my attention :)

Agreed, I actually quite like the sculpts, I just don't like the execution.

So what be ideal or near ideal 28mm ponies, in metal or plastic, for someone who needs around 40, for use as one of those Scandinavian breeds used by Norsemen?

I avoided WGF for the aforementioned problems, along with my own disappointment, though never disappointed with equipment, like swords and bow cases - AFAIK they're the only source for 28mm gladii and gladdi in scabbards.

Anyone have the Assault Group Cossack/Tartar ponies? Any comparison pics with Perry plastic horses?

I would have to file off the saddle, since the sculpts have molded on ones and maybe the blanket too.
