German Splinter Pattern Camo tutorial
« on: 05 February 2009, 10:23:18 PM »
In response to a request for a quick tutorial on WW2 German camo... I thought I'd post the results of today's painting.  This is a (BAM) German squad leader wearing the padded winter uniform.  These uniforms came in several different camo patterns (Splinter, Water and SS) as well as "mouse grey"; I believe all were reversible to white. I chose to use the splinter pattern as its the only one I've had success with yet  ;)

I started off with the base color which is a light grey/tan (I used 50/50% mixture of Vallejo Khaki Grey 70850 with Reaper Weathered Stone).   Then I began the camo pattern using Vallejo Chocolate Brown 70872.  To achieve the splinter effect I tried to make the pattern in a series of  connected triangles:

Next I added the green (Vallejo 334 German Tkcr.1(Feldgrau) at first darkened a bit, then used straight from the bottle as a highlight.  I highlighted the brown as well.  The camo really comes together when you paint in the tiny green raindrops (again Vallejo 334)  (*Another painter made the astute observation that my raindrops should actually point up-down)

Here's the finished figure:

Thanks John,

This is a good start for this topic on uniforms. If Hammers could look at this for a sticky and for different nations etc that would be great.

Best wishes,

Splendid! I love that camo scheme and I will use your guide to paint some of my "Future Wars" figures with it.

Dodge,  Not so hard to paint, but time consuming - better not drink too much coffee before attempting  ;)

Did you highlight the camo pattern with anything after it was all done? If so, what colors did you use?
