The GenCorp Incident - an AKULA Battle Report

The GenCorp Incident - an AKULA Battle Report

A while back our gaming group played yet another session using AKULA's Total AR:SE rules, which is one of our favorite rule sets for zombie games both within our group and when running events at conventions.  And it's simple and flexible enough to allow easy modifications to expand the genre a little bit as you'll see in the following battle report.

SITUATION REPORT:
All communication with GenCorp's South American research facility suddenly went dark 8 days ago.  No efforts to restore contact with the facility's communications center have been successful.

Due to the remote location of the GenCorp installation and the classified nature of the research being performed there, a paramilitary rescue team has been dispatched to assess the situation, secure the facility and any classified research, and to communicate the status of the complex back to GenCorp's regional headquarters.

Classified surveillance satellite images provide an overview of the facility, but don't reveal any obvious structural damage or other reasons why all contact with GenCorp personnel has stopped.

The rescue team, lead by Colonel Dutch Schaefer and accompanied by Marquez, a local advisor, arrives at the facility.

Colonel Schaefer calls the group to a halt as they observe the front gate.  There is an eerie silence and no noticeable activity within. Only the sound of the surrounding jungle can be heard.

The team warily approaches facility's security building and prepares to force entry.

After his men locate the control box for the security gate, Colonel Schaefer orders his men to open it and the squad moves forward.

The group is watched as they approach the gate...

The sound of the gate swinging open stirs a number of figures beyond the fence and they begin shuffling slowly toward the soldiers.  They ignore the rescue team's repeated commands to halt and identify themselves and begin to lunge forward aggressively, so the team opens fire and drops the nearest targets.

There's a time for joking around and a time to be serious; this is not one of them.

PART 2

More of the infected personnel emerge and stagger towards the rescue team

The team moves forward in formation and with well-practiced shots takes out more of the infected zombies as they begin to sweep the area to look for survivors and any clues about the nature of the disturbance.

Sgt. Briggs enter the nearest building and is immediately set upon by several zombies...

...but with a little supporting fire is able to make quick work of them.

With Marquez the advisor following close behind him, Colonel Schaefer directs his men to split into fire teams and continue sweeping the area and pushing forward  towards the distant administrative building.

Team members are ambushed while searching the rows of quonzet huts.

The sound of the gunfire continues to draw more zombies to the area.

PART 3

A massive 8-foot tall hulking beast lumbers out from behind the nearby loading dock.  This is no zombie!

Letting loose a gut-churning roar, the beast strides directly towards Sgt. Simons. He manages to keep his nerve and unloads his entire magazine into the beast.

With the help of supporting fire from his nearby companions, the charging hulk is dropped just before it reaches Sgt. Simons.

Meanwhile the other half of the team is suddenly attacked by a grotesque flying creature.

Zombies close in on other members of the team.

Emerging from among a stack of cargo containers by the loading dock, Sgt. Anderson and Sgt. Riske see yet another strange creature advance toward them.  Large bio-mechanical missile launchers extend from the sickening putrid skin of it's arms.

The creature fires and sends volleys of missiles streaking towards the troopers.

Meanwhile, more disturbing and terrifying creatures emerge from the administrative building and the aviation hangar and converge on the rescue team.

Creatures close in on the team from multiple directions.

PART 4

Spider-like creatures scale down the nearby building and swiftly attack from behind.

Just when the troopers start to get a handle on the zombies near the aviation hangar, a loud roar splits the air as another huge hellish creature slams the the hangar door off its hinges and emerges from the building.

Lt. Murdock finds himself in a spot of trouble.

Massed fire from the squad and Sgt. Anderson's SAW puts down the biggest of the creatures and allows the team to break away and drive further into the facility.  Making their way with stealth is no longer an option.

Having temporarily cleared a path, the team makes a dash toward the administrative building.

Lingering in the rear while reloading his SAW, Sgt. Anderson doesn't notice the creatures stalking him from behind.

More zombies and demonic-looking creatures begin to emerge in front of the group from the administrative buildings.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Anderson finishes reloading his SAW and turns to find himself nearly surrounded.  He opens fire and desperately sprays lead at point blank range into the horde of attackers.

PART 5

The team is in danger of being overrun by the continuing waves of creatures emerging from the entrances of the administrative buildings.

From atop a nearby building an imp-like creature summons unearthly flames from it's hands and with a unsettling shout it sends fireballs screaming down at the rescue team.

Realizing that they won't be able to hold out much longer against the waves of creatures emerging from the building, and with literal fire now raining down on them from above, Colonel Schaefer shouts orders to the team to run to their left flank and find an alternate route around the side of the buildings.

Fighting as rear guard, Sgt. Riske find himself suddenly alone and surrounded.

The group finds an open path and sprints between the building and the security fence.

The imp continues to throw down fireballs from the rooftop.

Colonel Schaefer spots a secure research laboratory building ahead. This might hold the answers that they've come for.  He orders his men forward toward the entrance.

The men move up to the lab's entrance...

...and set about trying to open the security door.

With the security code bypassed, the door slides open to reveal a room filled with equipment and perhaps a dozen vile creatures.

Marquez is the first inside the room and he sprays automatic bursts from his submachine gun across the bodies of several zombies at once.

The renewed gunfire has drawn more attackers and they begin to converge on the area.

PART 6

Taking advantage of the element of surprise the team concentrates their fire and drops many of the creatures before they have a chance to counter attack.

The team notices that many of the zombies in this room appear to be former technicians and other GenCorp personnel that presumably worked in this area.

The group performs a coordinated sweep of the room to look for any more threats.  they notice that several of the zombies had been banging on a door of a small office located at the back of the room and move in to investigate.

They open the door to reveal Dr. Krannich, one of the head GenCorp researchers at the facility. Dr. Krannich explains that something went terribly wrong with one of their experiments and some sort of dimensional rift was opened through which the creatures began to appear.  When his colleagues realized to their horror that they could neither close the rift nor turn off the machinery which was causing it he locked himself in the office and waited for help to arrive.  As far as he knows, he is the only survivor.

The doctor tells the rescue team it's vital that he escapes with his classified research data.  Colonel Schaefer instructs his men that they will escort Dr. Krannich to safety, but not before they've somehow closed the dimensional portal.

Dr. Krannich tells the team that the portal is in the next room. They position themselves at the security door and brace for whatever they might encounter on the other side.

Meanwhile, other team members attempt to hold off the growing number of zombies and creatures that are swarming toward the laboratory building.

Using the doctor's keycard, the team opens the security door...

...to reveal a chamber filled with terrifying monsters and a strange machine covered in crackling energy humming in the center of it.

Sgt. Anderson is the first to step through the doorway and immediately begins raking the room with rapid bursts from his SAW.

"Um, how's it going in there guys? Anytime now would be good."  Those holding the exterior door of the laboratory desperately hold off increasing waves of attackers.

PART 7

Deafening gunfire continues as the hellish creatures surge forward.

A cacodemon swiftly floats through the air, bearing down on Sgt. Anderson.

A massive cyber demon towers over the group on a walkway at the rear of the chamber.

Seeing a brief opening and sensing that this was the moment, Lt. Gonzalez sprints forward up to the machinery in order to plant his demolition charge.

Keeping up their fire, the team watches from the doorway knowing this may be their one and only chance.

Sgt. Anderson desperately tries to keep the creatures at bay to give Lt. Gonzalez the seconds he needs to secure and activate his demolition charge.

Working furiously, Lt. Gonzalez knows he has mere moments before he is charged by the cyber demon.

With ammo running low the troopers at the exterior door to the laboratory realize they can't hold out much longer.

Having placed the explosives, Lt. Gonzalez comes to the horrible realization that there's no longer time to retreat to a safe distance.  He reaches out his hand and activates the demolition charge with a "click"...

...and the sound of a tremendous blast rips through the chamber as the demo charge explodes and tears into the machinery.

The machinery is destroyed and the dimensional rift begins collapsing back in upon itself.  For a moment the body of Lt. Gonzalez can be seen being pulled into the rift before it's gone from sight.

PART 8

The team grabs Dr. Krannich and begins running to make their escape from the laboratory.

Despite running low on ammo, they blast their way through the waves of attackers as quickly as possible.

The group makes it back to the front of the administration buildings but sees more creatures emerging to block their escape.

Colonel Schaefer orders Lt. Murdoch to see if he can get the helicopter on the helipad started up.

The troopers take up defensive positions near the helipad and assess their dwindling stock of remaining ammunition.

Large numbers of zombies and creatures swarm toward the helipad.

An enormous hell knight charges forward...

...while Colonel Schaefer is set upon by another lightning fast creature.

The towering hell knight charges into close combat.

Lt. Murdoch makes a break for the helicopter's cockpit while Marquez quickly shepherds Dr. Krannich towards the transport compartment doors.

The wounded hell knight shrugs off its gunshot wounds as it repeatedly pummels Sgt. Riske into a pulp with it's massive fists.

The swirling rotors of the helicopter pick up speed as Lt. Murdoch prepares for take off.  The surviving members of the rescue team dash forward and climb onto the chopper as the next wave of zombies gets ever closer.

The chopper slowly gains altitude as it hovers over the facility and makes it's escape back out over the surrounding jungle.

AFTERMATH:
Colonel Schaefer's team succeeded in rescuing Dr. Krannich and safely returning with his classified research data.  But will the world ever learn the full truth about what really went on in The GenCorp Incident?
