Cheers Colin  :D

It's an Aliens - Ghosts of Mars - Serenity crossover project, so troops, civilians and blood-crazed reavers. The troops are from GW Cadians, the civilians from Warlord Games Survivors and the reavers from Mantic Ghouls, most with some degree of conversion. The only thing I'm undecided on is the terrain, whether to go with my temperate or arid boards as the starting point, though I don't have to decide until I base the minis. Scenario-wise: pretty much anything in any of the three aforementioned movies!  :D

I like that muchly mate  8) 8)

Like the sound of the project as well  :)

Is there going to be a canopy thingy on the top or will it be left open? Some sort of mesh might work?

cheers

Ta mate  :D

Yeah, a mesh roof would look cool but practically speaking I think I'd have to raise the roof line to get minis in and out..... it's a fast insertion vehicle* rather than a distance transit so I'm not 'too' worried about a roof from the utility perspective and a higher roofline might spoil the sleek aesthetic.   Ponder. Ponder. Ponder.....

*Hmmmm mothership. Raises the possibility of project expansion and more game scenarios!!!  lol

The mothership could hold four of these in a Chinook style under carriage  :D

Only if you wanted to though  ;)

cheers

Are you going to build magnets in to the base and then use magnets under the actual vehicle to make it 'float' like a maglev?

Hmmm. It would make sense for the mothership to have 4 vehicle bays .... and I don't have to fill them all straight away....  ;) lol

 lol

And Paul's just as bad for encouraging it!

I did try that with an x-wing ship and IIRC without an electro-magnet it's very difficult to get right.  I was unsuccessful before but I agree the effect is really cool.  8)

Did you use aluminium sheet for the base, and fishing line for tethering ?

Hi Mark. When I experimented it was with a plastic base that had a lot of rare earth magnets in a circle, rare earth magnets in the ship having opposing polarity, and no tethering.

Perhaps predictability, my troops follow the 'Nam' arc that was core to Aliens with the speeder taking on the role of helicopter.... fast, mobile, limited firepower, low altitude, etc.

That's the same idea that I had when I did my 40k guard army with the speeders

I remember that army in WD.
It inspired me to do my own Catachan force, and was also where I got the idea to do some open backed landers in the first place.
That army was frackin' amazing!

Wow!  :o

Is this an amazing coincidence or have I seen yours before Keith?  I assume Paul is referencing White Dwarf, which I've never read, but could I have seen it on LAF or elsewhere? Is it recent?

Am impressed!  8)

I see,
Never actually tried it myself .It was just the method that came to mind as I read your thread.
The Aluminium base so that the magnets were never able to repulse past the area of the base you'd want the vehicle in or tilt one side down where the effect was less ,and the fishing line to keep it from flying off the base.(as fishing line can be very strong and near invisible at the same time)  lol  absolutely no idea if it'd work,it was just the first thing to rattle its way to the surface.
As Aircav's pointed out its one of those ideas that pops into many an addled mind. However yours has a more of a Blue thunder meets  Aliens feel than the more Vietnam inspired versions Which is more my cup of tea.
Aircav's version is nice but it's all those bare arms Workshop does ,definitely not sculpted by someone who spends a lot of time in the out doors.Or maybe the future is devoid of bugs and beasties.  Ah but what do I know lol
Still I'll keep watch your versions progress .
Mark.
