Question on Congo Characters

Guys,
This came up in a Congo today. If a unit with a Character is wiped out - but the Character is still alive - is the unit considered destroyed for the purposes of Victory Points?
We have played that you have to kill the Character too, although the text on page 63 about the surviving Character reverting into its "own group" would indicate that the unit is gone when all the non-Character/Bearers are gone.

Not for victory points, these are the basic groups that account. If the character is left alone, the group is considered destroyed him. So reports the victory points to your opponent.
