Forgotten Pacts very disappointed .
« on: 18 November 2016, 03:30:12 AM »
Hi
I just got he Forgotten packs book and can not find any state for the Barbarian Berserker in the book, disappointed  that there are no states for the  Barbarian's as they seem just to be normal war band figs.
The whole book only has one page talking about the Barbarian's which in it self is a little disappointing, the rest of the book just cover Demons (26 Pages) and a few new spells and a few new War band members.

The other thing is getting the figures to play this game is going to be a bit of a pain when you need 3 Kaylakids (3), Grakyura (2) models just to play.
Then we come to the scenario's just to play them you have to get/build stuff so you can just play, sorry I just don't have a life time left to build all the things you need to just play one scenario in a lot of the books.

Considering North star still have not made half the monsters for some of the scenarios, so it means you have to look around all over the place to get something that you can use, and there not cheap. >:( I know I have looked.

I just don't see the point of buying a box of barbarians for this game as they only turn up as random encounter's  and I just do not see the point in having them as they are just like normal war bands, I may as well use the figures I got for the Infantry set.

I think this will be the last book I buy for this game, and just stick with what I have got so far to play it.

Okay, I assume this was the first expansion book you got? Because it was the same for Thaw of the Lich Lord and Into the Breeding Pits. The Cultists and Gnolls also don't really have profiles (the default Cultist basically is an unarmoured and unarmed human and for Gnolls there are only the Chieftain and Priest).
Same goes for the scenarios and required stuff...this has been the way scenarios are done from the starter book. They require certain scenery pieces or models to get playing. But that doesn't mean you have to take it al literally! Make it your own game and adapt the scenarios to your collection. We do this all the time. The scenarios themselves still shine, even when playing them a bit differently.

For Demons you can use about anything...they are demons. If you want literal translations from the text...yes, that will be hard. But the book basically features a "big sloth demon with minor sloth demons", a "big hungry all-eating demon with lesser nasty critters", a "demonic hound", "A demonic arthropod", a "Demonic squid". I think you can use almost all Call of Cthulhu models to fill these slots, use Reaper Miniatures' Bones or whatever you have in your stash.

And the Barbarian Berserker is explained on the "Barbarians page". It's basically a Barbarian Barbarian...but that would have sounded silly I guess. So they renamed it to Barbarian Berserker (which sounds very cool IMO).
If you want to play a Barbarian Warband, then do so. Why not have them buy Mystical Brands for 20gc a piece? Let them hire a demon (or two)? Give them a bonus in Summoning? Give them some restrictions (no Crossbows for instance) and Boom...a new Warband with its own flavour. Remember, it's your game. Just tweak it the way you want to. As long as you and your opponent are having fun right :)
You can also devise your own scenarios...shouldn't be hard. Just google "Skyrim" and "Side quests" and you can find loads of cool quests that feature Barbarian-like people.

What you have to remember , this game isnt as anal as a lot out there.
WYSIWYG goes out the window, you just use a figure that works or whatever you have.
it doesnt matter if its a plastic cow, as long as you have the stats and everyone knows what they are, you're golden.
The barbarians work as either Your warband or npc's/wandering opponents.

This game is meant to be fun and the first to make rule lawyers redundant,if you dont like a rule or it doesnt work for your
group, change it, house rule it,simple.
Imagination has been fed a crap ton of sugary sweets and told to go run riot.

So to sum it up, if you're asking the books to do all the thinking for you and you want to make everything just as joe describes it you can, but I recon people that play this game are thankfull to have a game where they can use their imagination and make/use /buy whatever they want to act as a certain figure.

Just FYI, barbarian/berserker, M6, F+4,S +0 ,A 10,W+3,H 14. hope that helps :)

That! 1000x what Roger says. See this game as one of the best games to get all quirky and cool models from your collection and use them in a friendly and fun game. Don't expect Warmachine or Malifaux type of rules where everything is tight and worded to the last letter or point. It's mainly to get gaming and have fun in the way you want.

I go with this (to an extent).
I've dug out loads of miniatures I've never played with but have kept hold of for decades, and am using them now.

I've made zero attempt to make them look snowy or frosty, and the same goes with my scenery (Mordheim).

I do however agree that most of the scenarios do require specialised scenery which can be a pain to build ! So I would support more scenarios that don't require special items of scenery.

I wonder if I can convince Osprey to print that on the cover of the book?

Nice one vin  lol
As far as the special scenery goes, Its nice, I enjoy that part as well . the amount of work you put into it depends on
what you personally want it to look like.
this game is flexible enough to either adjust it to what you have or improvise.
If I had to do this game on a tight budget ,I reckon a glue gun /pva and cardboard would be all you needed
to make near enough everything.

The stuff you can get from the Pound/dollar store would work.
They have paint ,caulk, filler, glue, domino's, BBQ skewers, stick on plastic and even vinyl tiles, foam board, and cardboard is free.

The special scenery I.e the tower and celestium are only used once in the scenarios, but that also doesn't mean you only play them once or cant incorporate them into other games.

Horses for courses I guess.

This. My Chronomancer warband has a caveman from the distant past and a lasgun wielding "counts as crossbow" marksman from the far future, because I had the models sitting around.

Seriously, if you're expecting this game to hold your hand and make all your decisions for you, you've picked up the wrong game.

I just don't see the point of buying a box of barbarians ...[and]... may as well use the figures I got for the Infantry set.

By all means do! The point of buying the box is not so you can trump some other player with some awesome statline.. If that's your game I don't see why you even bothered to buy into Frostgrave.

The obvious reason for buying them is that you like the models....

I for one haven't bought into any model from Frostgrave so far, seeing I can manage with my own collection.. I do love the books though... and I can't imagine anyone complaining over 9 pounds for a full color publication....

Yeah, something that I appreciate more every day about "generic" rulesets, and that's also true for Frostgrave even if there's an official line of models.
Also, the author looks very open minded about house rules, too.

In a way, I can see where daz is coming from...
I was a little disappointed that the Gnolls didn't feature prominently in the Breeding Pits scenarios if I'm honest. However at least the barbarians (and the earlier cultists) at least pop up in scenarios, and all three can turn up as wandering monsters.
It's all about expectations - if you just want a box set from which you can build a cool warband, then they're great, but if you bought the plastics thinkng the figures would play an integral part in the scenarios, then it's understandable that you' be put out.
I suppose my advice would be to do your research before commiting to the Nickstarter (or don't be surprised if you've already bought Lich Lord or Breeding Pits).
As for specific monsters and terrain - yes that can be annoying if you want to stick to the scenarios to the letter!
However there's nothng that says you -have- to do exactly what the books say. Have fun using your imagination to come up with alternatives :D
