Fantasy skirmish, or fantasy dungeon crawl?
« on: 20 November 2016, 03:02:21 AM »
As I wrap up a small expansion for my Old West game, I've decided it's time to move onto another project.  As this will take a couple of years to finally flesh out, etc. I'm struggling with the direction.

I'd like to start work on a dungeon crawl I've had in mind for quite some time.  On the other hand I'm tempted to try bringing Shoot N' Skedaddle mechanics into other genres, namely skirmish fantasy, etc.

What do you folks prefer?  While I am sure plenty of people love both, I'm curious which one is more attractive to you.

Why not both?

In one set of rules, or actually produce both?  The latter is an option, but it took me three years to get SnS to a point where I was truly happy with it, so I'm going with one game design at a time.

Why not both?

My thought also, one set of rules should be perfectly fine for both if done right. What do you see that differentiates a dungeon crawl encounter in a 6" chamber and a skirmish encounter in a 6" woodland glade on a tabletop?

If I compare SnS mechanics to the playtesting I've done with my dungeon crawl ideas they're quite different.  SnS mechanics aim at randomly generated and randomly equipped warbands - with players controlling their handful of figures.  The dungeon crawl mechanics I've started on are aimed at a more classical dungeon master vs. the party mechanic system, where in the dungeon master is controlling the dungeon environment as the party seeks to accomplish its goals (all tied in a unique campaign system/generator).

While I could borrow some of the basic mechanics, the SnS mechanics don't work well for the goal I'd have with a dungeon crawl (which would ideally be the party hacking through dozens and dozens of minions vs. a balanced fight against hardier foes).

The appeal is there for both, with SnS mechanics making the skirmish proposition easier.  The dungeon crawl has been an idea which has been through dozens of variations for the past 15 years.  I have, however, never narrowed down and really focused on it.  I have a stack of hundreds of pages of notes/ideas/past editions/variations/lore etc.
