So I'm a hoarder
« on: 08 December 2016, 04:11:07 PM »
As I was sat here packing ready for a house move I came to a realisation. .. This hobby has turned me into a hoarder.
No I'm not talking the lead mountain (although that is a scary prospect) I'm talking about the inumerable bit of card, foam, packing etc that I've squirrelled away on the premise that I will one day find a use for it. Even now I'm finding it difficult to part with that lovely bit of corregated card or foam off cut...

I'm assuming I'm not the only one with this problem... at least I hope I'm not

No, you are not.

But my better half is much more organized than I, in ensuring that the majority of that still ends up in the recycle bin.

Thus ensuring any useful card/boxes/bits etc I have other than anything directly identifiable as my 'hobby/stuff' are all fresh.....and kept to a manageable level.

You're not alone; after almost ten years, a house move was just the ticket for ditching vast amounts of "stuff" that had accumulated. I just kept a few choice bits and the rest went to the tip. :)

Insulation board (rescued from skips), polystyrene packing (in sheets and ripped up into little chunks), bubble wrap, huge Forex plasticard sheets (old signage), a big box of balsa wood and last but not least, lots and lots of cardboard boxes.

It's pathetic and shameful and I find it way more difficult than I should to throw any of it away.

Well, throw it away, and you'll probably find a good use for it tomorrow...

I had to start my own business to get an office where to pace my hoard!

There are bits I'm finding that I can see why I kept them. However, there's a worrying amount that I cant for the life of me think what the hell I was going to use them for!

Oh and it would appear I have never thrown away any of the mdf sprues from the various buildings I've made

It's nice to know I'm not alone

Lots of people do this...while not hobby related I've tossed more than five large black trash bags of "junk" out in the past day or two - heaps of books to the salvation army, and eBaying lots of stuff.  Throwing stuff out can be very therapeutic.

I've realized (unfortunately) I will always battle with this hobby as I'm not a "stuff" person, but I have "stuff" hobbies.  Hence why I am often meticulously trying to store/box/catalogue what I own etc.  It's tempted me frequently to abandon the hobby altogether as I'd much prefer to have far less stuff.

During one of my (many) Stalanist purges I gave the art department at our school carrier bags of 'interesting' bits. Over 8 weeks they kindly took 48 bags from me, at that point they called a halt to the transfers. I still have no spare space, how come?

We moved house last year and my "stuff" was pared down quite a lot.  I now have my own man-cave, which is overflowing with figures, terrain, magazines, books and boxes/bags/piles of soft foam, cardboard, MDF & Ply offcuts, foam-board and insulating foam, as well as lots of "useful" boxes of various shapes and sizes.

2 house moves is the equivalent of a house fire for cutting down on accumulated "stuff".

A transcontinental house move is the equivalent of 2 house fires.

Any house move involving the "minimum bid" packer/movers your employer will pay for is the equivalent of a Mongol horde stopping at your place for a spot of light pillage and destruction before moving on... (The only difference is that, with the Mongols, you can actually LOCATE the shattered remains of your former life.)

I moved about two months ago. Once again, it made me extremely aware of the volume of my belongings. I could have built a crate fort, but in reality it ended up looking more like a Westerosian wall.

And once again, the move resulted from a rushed "take it or leave it" offer (which I obviously took), leaving no time to go through the stuff properly. Consequently I have well compressed yet poorly sorted boxes full of random things. Most likely over half of that could be easily ditched or sold. Oh well, maybe next time...

And yes, there's a good pile of terrain material there too.

But on the plus side, my new living room can accommodate a formidable gaming table, which I've already bought. Just don't remind me of having to move it some day. lol

I too am in the hoarding business ;).

It is just too easy to spot things which may come in handy for future projects. Some of the places i have worked at had some great pieces for scratch building projects and lots of free insulation foam the pink and blue kind. The garage had sheets of it stored along with styrene packing shapes which i thought would make good buildings.

Anyone who is in the hobby must do this to some extent.Others just take it that bit further.

When I moved out 6 years ago I found packing up my leadpile and all the associated bits of "useful" junk, model kits, diecasts etc almost as traumatic as my marriage  finishing.  Seriously I had one box of clothes, 2 boxes of books and 20 boxes of wargame stuff  lol
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.
