a very midget British Civil War Submarine.
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:44:31 AM »
Ok, here goes the story:

Last week, Svenn was kind enough to provide me some of his wonderful card rivets sheets and I wanted to try them out...

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=9512.0

At Fridaynight's clubmeeting, someone brought a (1/700-ish) waterline plastic kit of the Graf Spee.  Since het wanted to build it for wargame purposes, he had no use for the lower part of the hull and kindly offered it to me.  So I went to work on the hull, adding a short piece of plastic tube (conning tower), some bits, an Eureka naval gun and... Svenn's rivets!  The result, a generic midget sub, is shown below.  BTW, Svenn, card is better than plasticard for the rivet sheets: the card is strong enough to withstand (even fluid) glue and paint: the rivets hardly fade.  On top of that, it would have been a hell of a job to bend plasticard in shape for this model; not so with card!

The gun is held in place with magnets, so it can easily be replaced by e.g. a machine gun (or used on another vessel - that's what comes from living close to the Dutch border, I guess...  lol).  Both gun deck & roof of the conning tower are magnetic to lock figures (on washers) in place.

I think it is a useful little thing (carries 2 torpedos, left & right from the hull - below the waterline  lol) for cloack & dagger operations, landing spies etc or even support a landing with its gun (in the land of the blind...).  Since it is a small craft (4 crew), it doesn't need an officer to command, so communist crews are welcome to it as well...  I know maintenance level of the craft isn't 100% (grass  growing on the surface) and the deck could use a sweep of the broom (flocked bases...), but there's a war on, you know!  lol

Hi Geudens,
that's great, plus all the above comments.
I might just have to nick that idea as I'm sure I've got a couple of ship kits in the loft!

Thank you for your kind comments lady & gents!

I can recommand the exersise, it's really a very simple conversion (I have done similar ones in the past).  When I cut a hull to waterline I always try to keep the bottom part intact (this doesn't always work...  lol). Larger lower hull parts are also very nice for creating VSF subs...

Bravo! Looks great.

I would say I especially like the rivets but they are not the best bits by far. They have worked well though and I have more confidence in the 4000 I have got to paint now.

Bloody quick work too, I only posted the sheets a few days ago.

You're too modest, Svenn - it wouldn't look the same without the rivets!  "Bloody quick work": well it is just a minor thing to build, as I stated...

Chick, I'll talk to YOU later!  lol
