Help Please - Jacobite 45 period advice
« on: 15 December 2016, 09:02:15 PM »
Our grandson's class is "doing" the Stuarts and the Jacobites next term and "Callum's Grandad" has been "volunteered" to produce a Scottish Highland village and villagers, some clansmen and some redcoats.  The idea is show how the Highlanders lived and worked.  "We" don't need many figures but highland civvies (unarmed male, females, children) are giving me a problem.  I find some livestock like highland cattle and also some Haggis (might fit one or two in for fun and see if teacher notices).  I can find the armed clansmen and redcoats fairly easily.  I searched the internet for suitable cheap buildings and found some in the USA (I am in UK) by Hudson & Allan but postage is expensive.

So looking for ideas for:
Highland civvies male, female, children - unarmed as crofters, herders, fishermen, weavers, bakers (cottage industry types) and also one family group as the Laird.  A few suitable cottages or I'll need to make them.

The whole thing will be about 75cm square and with luck the pieces will be removable so they can be used in a war game.

This not a period of wargaming that I am familiar with so any ideas very welcome.

I'll eco what he said and add that warlord sales separate heads with the Scottish bonnet caps in their ECW range.

Many thanks - Redoubt and Warlord look promising with War Bases for animals and Black hat for the Haggis!

The female figures look like they can be used but the males may need kilts/plaids added.

Some of the figures from the Imex plastic 1/72 Pilgrims and American Pioneers sets might be usable for children and teenagers. I make a habit of cherry-picking these plastic sets for my 28mm American frontier collection:

Many thanks again.  And yes I know that tartan (as we know it) was a 19th Century invention.

I was put off the Alternative Armies figures by the left handed piper - something I've never seen in real life.

Redoubt looks like they will be getting an order very soon.

Foundry has several sets of 18th Century civilians that could work for you.  Black Hussar also has a small but very interesting set of civilians, including a minister.

Check Perry miniatures. There are some good civilians in their 18th and 19th century ranges

Scheltrum Miniatues of Aberdeen do a range of resin highand turf and stone "blackhouses" perfect for what you need. Their website appears to be down but they do have a blogsot with pics.

I think they should be easy enough to make - I think the film 'Rob Roy' also features a very nice Blackhouse for some indoor reference, if roofs should be detachable.
