Anyone recognize this epicast terrain?
« on: January 02, 2017, 11:31:52 PM »

Anyone recognize this piece?  Marked epicast, and looks pretty 40k to me.  Can't find anything online that matches, and curious what I have before I toss on paint.

Found it at a second hand shop for $4.

Can't seem to see the pictures. Sorry.

Have you made the photos so anyone with the link (or on the web) can see them?
EDIT: I can view them if I quote your message and copy the link into my URL address, not familiar though sorry.

Interesting piece. I've never seen the likes of it.

I says Epicast and looks 40K, but it may well never have been released. Epicast and Armorcast were known to make small batches of prototype models, which eventually all ended up on the market.

So they made a lot of Epic models in 40K scale, by simply upscaling them, but they also released some of their own designs. One such piece is the Imperial bunker for instance. It had a winged skull on its front, but there are also versions out there with an Imperial Eagle, even though those were not ever advertized or officially sold.

The same thing goes for other products as well. So this might be a piece they made as a prototype. But then, looking at the quality of the cast and also the type of resin, it might well be either an imitation or recast. Epicast almost exlusively used white/yellow resin, especially on 40K related products (there are some pictures of grey pieces, but those were either generic models or Warzone models).

That's not saying this is not an actual Epicast piece, but considering it's now showing in any online catalog or listing of Epicast products, it can either be a copycat piece, or an unreleased prototype. The fact that the Epicast signature was written in a doorway instead of on the bottom as usually is the case is strange too. Does it come with seperate door pieces?

But no matter what it is, there's no denying it's an interesting piece of terrain and even when it is not 'official' (a loose term at any rate, when dealing with Epicast models), you got a  great bargain with it!

I'd love to see more pictures of it, from more angles. And painted pics too of course... :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Original post was on the phone.  Stupid phone won't let me sync photos properly.  Grrr.

It is actually a yellowish foam.  Prior owner primed it that gray color, which strangely ... sort of works.  The base of the piece, which is separate, also has Epicast stamped/scribed in it.  Will try to get a pic of the bottom of the piece to show.  Foam of some type, with a round hole running up through the middle of the piece.  Just can't seem to imagine this was some unreleased piece that wound up in some second hand store in Nowhere, Kentucky for $4.

It has a winged skull 'thing' on the very top of the piece which, honestly, looks stupid.  Thought about trying to get that cut off to make the top of the tower useable in game.  Not sure how to cut this stuff, though.  It's foam, but are we talking foam from the 1970s that will give me cancer if I cut it?  :)  Also, if it actually *is* some type of old epicast, don't want to start cutting into something that somebody else might want (little mercenary of me, but there ya go!)

Was sitting right next to a taller bunker which I have seen in some Epicast catalogs, but it had way too much wear and tear, even for that small price they wanted.

Got better pictures? Might it be epicast parts stuck together and recast? I've not seen any epicast foam stuff, only resins. There was a lot of stuff done as trials, samples, store terrain pieces for demo tables which eventually found itself in the wild though.

Epicast website is dead which is a shame as the lost and the banned part had pretty much all of the official and semi official 40k resin products. Some of the info is at the CCM wiki

You could have a look at the Wayback machine as the Epicast.com site was captured and still has some pics.  Main issue is tracking it down through the years!  :(
