Flight Stands?
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:18:09 AM »
Hi gents!

I was wondering if someone could help? I'm building a big flying ship in the Build Something Contest, but I'm struggling to find a flight stand I can use for it! :? It needs to be heavy duty, similar to the one used on the GW Valkyrie if poss.

Does anybody know of any suppliers....or even a place to get some Perspex I could somehow cut up myself to use.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't checked, but try googling the 3D Model Shop in London. They have virtually everything you could wish for for scratch building.

I understand a lot of people use the base and stem from plastic wine glasses.
Perhaps something like that would work for you?

Hi Andy
Can't help with the stand but you will get perspex from your local sign making company, or shop fitters.

May even get offcuts for free. Especially if you tell them why you want it, giving them a good laugh will put them on your side. :)

Cheers

Zinge Industries make these - with metal or plastic base. Link to the plastic base one: https://www.zinge.co.uk/collections/bases/products/plastic-flying-oval-base-and-stand-base-120mm-by-92mm

I did floating stands using coat hangers for my grav tanks.

Pretty easy if you want an explanation.
Or you could order one.

CorSec Engineering has some pretty good ones that might interest you. Sure, they aren't transparent, but they're rather good...and there's some extendable ones as well.

Thanks you for all your help gentlemen!

I didn't want to ask the referee of the competition the model is entered in! ;)

Thanks Vanvlak! Their one is only 127mm high though. I need something to keep it way off of ground level.

I understand a lot of people use the base and stem from plastic wine glasses.
Perhaps something like that would work for you?

Cheers DS615, but I need something a bit bigger and sturdier. The model is going to be about 250mm long and 300mm high. Quite weighty as well!

Thanks Snitchy, but I was hoping for something see-through.

Thanks Vagabond! I checked up eBay on Perspex (it seems I was searching for the wrong thing by typing in 'flight stands'!) and found a lot of stuff

Thanks guys!

Depending on what the hull will be like, you may be able to build in three of four perspex legs. I did this for my Aeroneff and it works great.

On the Aeroneff, I fitted tube with an internal diameter of 6mm in the hull at a slight angle.

The flying model can pretty much go anywhere on a table as it has very small footprints.

I have some different length perspex rod so I can have it at a low or high altitude, depending on what I need it to fly over and drops bombs on...

So much to do, so little time...

Thanks for that Corosan! That's really helpful!

I've gone with a 12mm solid Perspex rod and a 6mm thick A4 size sheet to fix it to. I'll get some pictures up soon.

Thanks again gents. Here's what I came up with.

The 6mm sheet for the base was drilled with a 12mm drill bit, being careful to keep the drill steady. This ensured a good, tight fit for the 12mm rod. I drilled the top of the rod and glued in a smaller, waste bit of plastic tube that keeps the ship from moving around.

Nice job with the stand, did you get the perspex sheet cut to size? If so, where?

Also, I like where that ship is going, looks an amazing design. Any other WIP pictures?

Cheers Coronasan!

The Perspex is from eBay. The seller gave options in the auction both for thickness and size. I choose A4. The Floatel (as it now seems to be called! ;)) is on the Build Something Contest board. It's built and I'm just finishing up my painting just now, but I can't show it until the contest is over.
