New Red Box minis
« on: 25 January 2017, 04:25:10 AM »
Red Box just posted these minis today for sale. They would be perfect for Frost Grave.

I really really like RedBox Minis.  Went in for the Warbands of the Cold North kickstarter.  But!  A caveat: the spears and blades came out very fragile.  In my case, I just posed most of the minis so that the sword-blade or axe was against a leg or something, something where a dot of cement could provide some support.  But with the spears I ended up making my own out of brass rod.

I'm not a fan of having to setup a user account for one time purchases, but other than that I've found Red Box to be an excellent merchant.  I just picked up 'Magda' as a spellcaster for a friend and some of their wolves last week.  (The attached photo is my SAGA warlord purchased from Red Box - hope it uploads OK.)

These do look good. I checked out their store. I wish the pictures of the minis were all of finished product. It looks weird seeing painted product next to sculpted prototypes. I may get a few though. I just am not a fan of metal miniatures.

The Red Box minis are really lovely. Their only drawback in my opinion is that they are noticeably on the small side so it can be hard to mix them with other lines.

Interesting. I would have thought that they would appear bigger based upon this blurb from the About Us section of their website.

the various armature heights of the various ranges in the RBG catalogue are as follows;

   humans.......................32-36

   half elves....................28-32

   elves...........................28-30

   dwarves......................22-26

   halfings.......................22-25

   half orcs......................28-40

    orcs............................35-45

    goblins.......................20-28

He mentions that his miniatures are 32mm based upon measuring from bottom of feet to top of the head before posing the armature that they sculpt the figure upon.

Maybe my size calibration is just off from the most recent round of GW scale creep.

I'll try to take a photo of the ones I have (from the first KS campaign, so maybe no longer typical?). As I said the sculpts are really nice, so I'd hate to discourage anyone from getting them.

Red Box's mnis are roughly 32mm in scale, but their features are not 'heroic scale'.  Compared to most 28mm historicals, Reaper minis, and Frostgrave minis, they are rather tall, but their proportions are a pretty good match.  Compared to GW, AoW, or PP minis, their height is pretty good, but they are skinny and have itty-bitty heads, hands, and feet.  They match up to Rackham minis pretty good, in both height and build.

So far my only beef with Red Box's model line is with their dwarves.  I LOVE the sculpts but they are tiny little guys, similar in scale to Citadel's mid-80s C11 Halfling range.  Compared to GW's and AoW's dwarves, Red Box dwarves look like little, bearded dwarf children.

@Barking Monkey:  Brilliant minds think alike. I used that very same miniature for my SAGA warband as well, but with a few conversions.

I built a barbarian warband with mostly minis from their last Kickstarter mixed with Frostgrave barbarians and Warlord Celts. Works quite well in my opinion, no concerns over size. I did snap a quick photo, but lighting was bad and my varnish has come out a little shinier than I would like. Still, it shows Red Box (with GB head), Frostgrave metal (Statueqsue head), Frostgrave plastic (GB head), Red box, Red Box, Frostgrave plastic, Lord of the Rings.

The Frostgrave barbarians are clearly a bit stockier, but fine in height, so I've used them for Thugs, Men at Arms and such, and then Red Box for Thieves and Treasure Hunters.

Brilliant paint work on that Barbarian, both the tattoos and shield.

Those are perfect for Frostgrave.  I've liked their minis for some time, but never purchased any.  Maybe I'll have to change that.

Anybody know a good vendor in the States for Red Box minis?
