But what about THEM!? (AAR, sorta)
« on: 30 January 2017, 06:45:58 AM »
Now I say sorta, because this was a first playtest of a scenario I had in my head, that I originally planned for Pulp Alley, but some of the guys I play with don't care for that ruleset, and I also wanted a bit less roleplay, and more, I don't know, survival worry.  I love Pulp Alley, but I couldn;t get the feel I wanted from it with this.  If Dave and Wolf Girl can tell me why I am wrong, I'll listen!

Anyway, I used a variant of a custom homebrew ruleset I created for conventions fights, and the two guys I had here to help playtest and I tore it apart to figure out where I was missing the necessaries.  As such I took photos, but they were over a 6 hour period, and Ben kept making Old-Fashioneds, and I don't really recall all of the details...

The premise was an earthquake had caused the river to divert into the giant ant tunnels below the trading outpost, and they were pouring out, and mad.

But, pretty pictures...

So, I had 1d12 ants coming out of one of 3 entrance points on the boards, and they then moved when their card was drawn.  My system shuffles cards that represent each unit during 2 phases - a move phase, and a fight phase.  The cards get shuffled between each phase, so the order changes, and sometimes dramatically. I honestly have lost a lot of what happened after the above - as they were the photos after the first turn, when everyone was placed, and the first wave of ants had appeared.

The Nuka-Cola caps were where you could find hiding children, runaway slaves, or special items - one of which was a minefield you could place anywhere.

One player had the brilliant idea to stampede the brahmin ahead of him, and then slip by when the ants attacked and killed them instead...

Turn 4, I opened a new hole inside the building everyone was defending. That made life more interesting.

They really ran into a bottleneck at the door - he was trying to move too many figures through at once.

And then, the backdoor started being overrun...

We ended the game here, because it was after 1am, and none of us are that young anymore.  I think I have what I need to make it work for a convention, though.

Great looking game! THAT looked like lots of fun.

Hey, there are plenty of reasons to like/dislike any ruleset. So if you and your group are having fun - you're using the right rules.  ;)
