Frostgrave Fiction Recommendations
« on: 30 January 2017, 07:07:15 AM »
I know about, and own, the official book of short stories.

I was wondering if anyone had other recommendations for books that really capture the spirit of Frostgrave...

Possibly some of Games Workshop's Mordheimy books?

It's not a book, but I wrote the accounts of our last Frostgrave Campaign and the adventures of my Illusionist, Kodak,  in the form of a narrative, so it kind of reads a bit like chapters from a book would.  If you're interested, here is a link to the third game report, where I really started to use more of a narrative style.  There's a link in each report to the one that comes after it, so they should be easy to follow.

Oooo! I love the current Frostgrave fiction book, so more would be a treat.

On the other hand, I've also done a little digging myself, and have come up with a short list of recommendations:
  • Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire, Heir of Novron (Riyria Revelations) - Sullivan
  • Tome of the Undergates, Black Halo, Skybound Sea - Sam Sykes
  • Priest, Theif - Matthew Colville
  • Complete Book of Swords - Fred Saberhagen
  • Goblin Quest, Goblin Hero, Goblin War, etc. - Jim Hines

I've only just tucked into Theft of Swords, but the first few chapters have been great!

I think FGV have enough space for every classic fantasy imagination. It means we play the same game, with the same simple description but everyone of us see things different. You can see this with models people are using for game. Some of them you probably mark as an ugly or ... common, that is not how the things should be. That is why you already created your own world. Another example. Terrain. Some people using classic gothic ruins. Some gamers using fieldstone ones. I've already seen few primitive huts compared to Mordheim late renaissance / baroque house look. Houses are totally devastated or almost no scratched. Ground totally or partially covered with snow or stones or even grass.

You love the picture you have already created by yourself.

As goes for MY Frostgrave it's somewhere near "Chronicles of the Black Company" by Gleen Cook. One of the best fantasy book I ever read. "Dread Empire" series by Gleen Cook (first book you need to get over it). I think it's some space for a piece of Conan too.

I've just started Rise of Empire myself - good fun!

Received my copy of Tabletop Gaming, and a certain JA McCullough is quoted to be releasing a book of fantasy fiction...

After reading this thread I bought The "Chronicles of Black Company" and its good and I will finish it but for me it doesn't measure up to the Dragonlance Novel "Brothers in Arms"

Anyone else know of any mercenary company novels similar to "Brothers in Arms". I like my wizards and mages to be more traditional D&D casters.

You could look into the Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Maybe Lankhmar. Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser have a lot of adventures that can be turned into scenarios.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything, but since it was mentioned...I have just released a fantasy fiction anthology called Victory's Knife.

You can order it on Kindle here: http://amzn.to/2lwLcHT

Or as a print-on-demand paperback here: http://amzn.to/2mdA1I0

Or, if you want a PDF you can contact me directly.

In fairness though, it really doesn't have anything to do with Frostgrave. If anything it closer to Ghost Archipelago. Though it isn't really like either...
