BEF and Wehrmacht 1940 10mm

I'm slowly moving towards completing this project (famous last words!). Once the Brits and Germans are done I'll probably start on the French and then think about the Poles and Belgians (!). Here are some of ze Germans I've painted this year. Models are a mixture of Pendraken and Pithead.

How do you do the infantry?

Do you mount them a) directly on the bases or b) do you put 5 on an ice-lolly stick for painting?

Do you paint the main colour and shade with a wash?

Do you choose different / brighter colours than in larger scales?

NOTE
I have been experimenting with 10mm and will include them in my updated painting guides.
I have been mounting 5 on a lolly stick for painting and then painting bright colours and using a dark wash to get the shades.
