Which SF/Space opera Universe for Rogue Stars?
« on: 24 February 2017, 03:25:17 PM »
I have been testing or reading skirmish wargames rules for years (for fantasy and scifi) including SOBH, Mutants and Death Ray Guns, Heroscape, Deadzone, Necromunda, AT-43/Confrontation, Dust Tactics, SAGA, Chain Reaction 3.0, Mercs form Megacon, a brief look on Infinity...

I just bought Rogue Stars which seems to me the right ruleset for playing teams of 4-7 minis in scifi setting.

I decided to build some gangs for my playing group and was thinking about designing a campaign for a more "roleplay" game. I am looking for universe where I could build my campaign and instead of creating a whole universe I was thinking about using existing roleplaying space opera universe.

After this (long) introduction my question is : what space opera/scifi universe do you use to play Rogue Stars?

From now, I've identified the following possibilities more focused on space opera:
- Jack Vance Universe from Demon Princes (books)
- Honor Harrington Universe (books)
- Vorkosigan Universe (books)
- Traveller (RPG)
- Mindjammer? (RPG)
- N.E.W. (RPG)

PS : It's a voluntary option not to consider Star Wars or Dune Universe ;-)

My sci-fi skirmishing in general (not just RS) is firmly grounded in the 40K mythos, although I'm willing to play fast and loose with other inspiration and incorporate it into a 40K-ish setting.

I'm currently trying to work out how to use Rogue Stars for the Strontium Dog setting, and am in very early planning stages on "Valerian & Laureline", likely to be inspired enough once the movie comes out next summer.

That said, I like the (chronologically) earlier Vorkosigan books very much, and would love to see something along that lines - the  plots seem to focus on very small groups of highly individual characters which could work nicely with Rogue Stars.

The Gaean Reach universe of Jack Vance. Anything can happen there.

I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

If I could find miniatures to represent the various races, I might use the Star Frontiers rpg setting. I love the races in the game. There just doesn't seem to be any minis to represent them other than the original game minis and they are 25mm and made of lead.

Thanks for all this answers I will look at those universes.

I noticed that many universes were centered on human species or derivated when they are not exclusively humans. Two of my eight squads contain aliens (a Combined army starter from Infinity and the Rebs starter from Deadzone) so I am looking for a universe where all races are considered and not so many are to be found (even Gaean Reach seems human centric).

I've found the world of the Flying Tigers RPG (a french one) that could be interesting with a deep universe and many transgalactic organisations (Lady of Iron for Pirates, Rose of March for psionics and cultists, Galactical International Corporations for mercenaries,...)

I looked also at the clone of GW world ie Warpath from Mantic Games.

And just to finish I think that I will not use them but transhumanism post apocalypse world of Eclipse Phase or Mindjammer look interesting too  :)

Hmmm.  Anyone else familiar with Phil Foglio's Buck Godot / Gallimaufry comics?  They seem like a good fit setting-wise, all sorts of aliens, weird tech, tons of different motivations for scenarios, and room for generally small scale actions despite Buck's frequent involvement with the big power players of the setting.  So many crew possibilities - Winslow cultists, alien ninjas, Hoffmanite grievous injury providers, Velvet Fist bouncers/employees/patrons.

Larry Niven's Ring World and Known Space has all kind of aliens. A Man-Kizinti(sp?) campaign would be great.

Peter Hamilton's Nights Dawn trilogy could be interesting with swashbuckling high tech captains vs possessed humans that have powers but glitch technology.

As far as I know there are exactly 3 existing Kzin miniatures in a vignette set originally made by Ral Partha.
Now made by Dark Sword

There are of course many other feline aliens but none I have seen that truly represent Kzin.

I have come across Black Ocean a set of books by J.S. Morin, I have only read the first 3 so far and I must admit I have enjoyed all 3. I am sure the Black Ocean will be a good Universe for Rogue Stars, which I am looking at doing myself.

give them a look over :)
