28mm Battlemech Combat at Adepticon!
« on: April 14, 2016, 04:51:25 PM »
A couple weeks ago a couple of club members got together at Adepticon to run our annual Mech Attack game in 28mm.
This is the 4th year we've run Mech Attack at a convention and the second year we've done it at Adepticon.  This year we expanded from the mechs-only game we did previously to a combined arms game that strongly rewarded use of infantry to seize objectives and APC's to move them around.  It was very successful and was definitely more tactical than previous games which were more of a mad dash to stop the objectives with Mechs.

More pics and the AAR for the convention game, and the 10mm (with Rebased Mechwarrior clix) practice game can be seen here.
http://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=116

As you can see below we use a wide variety of models.  We have units from Void, Kryomek, Sedition Wars, Vor, AT43, Dust, Mechwarrior Die Cast, Robotech Toys, Robogear as well as Macross, Gasraki and Gundam model kits and others I've probably forgotten.  We used the Mech Attack ruleset which I described to passers-by as Battletech with 1/10 as many rules and plays in 1/4 the time. As always, the newbies who showed up to play had no trouble grasping the rules and pretty soon most of them were playing with almost no input from us.

A few pics to entice you to view the full report:
The Battlefield. All this terrain nearly fills my car, but I still want to build a bit more...

I finally got around to making a train (a Cheap toy with a few mods) for our train station.

Great as always ! I believe I post a comment each year on your annual battle  lol

Mech attack is a great ruleset, and very cheap. The "grid" system is a genious invention : it really give the "power" feeling of fighting with giant powerfull robots, in a very dynamic, visual and fun way. Not speaking the diferent weapons effects on the grid are very logical and rapidly obvious even for new gamers.

Thanks!  I've actually got two more trains to finish. One is a 3 car bullet train toy and the other is a Freight Train.  I don't have any particular game mechanics for them, but I'm intrigued by the possibility of relatively narrow blocking terrain that also looks unique.

I definitely agree.  It really captures the feel of blasting through armor with differing weapons without pretending to be a more precise (and more rules-heavy) locational system like Battletech.

Wonderful stuff - I've always admired your ability to produce really excellent 28mm near-future terrain, Eilif, and seeing it all together like this is a real treat. The mechs are just the cherry on top for me! However, I'm now intrigued - where can one find this "Mech Attack" ruleset of which you speak? Seeing what you've done with 28mm mech wars makes me want to look a little more deeply into the area!

Here's the official website :

and the wargame vault page :

It's a bundle with paper figures and ruleset. But you can use any figure you want.

Thanks for all the kind words folks.  It's immensely gratifying when people enjoy seeing my work.

Thanks for sharing.  Any chance of some more pictures?
And ye shall receive...  :D

No other pictures from this game beyond what's in the link in the first post, but here's links to our other convention games and posts about mechs and terrain.

Almost all my terrain and links to more detailed posts was collected on this topic.

Thanks!
The Train Station is a GeoTrax train station.  This one here:
http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Geotrax-System-Central-Station/dp/B000NWX2W8
Though, I bought just the station part at a resale shop. It didn't even have the roof or one of the stairway/supports.
More pics here:

I actually recently acquired a second one that I will be converting in a different style. It has both stairs and the overhead supports so It's going to have a roof and I'll be using Deadzone panels to detail it in much the same way that I did for these buildings:
