I’ve been sucked into a Gothic Horror project with the usual suspects and although vampires really aren’t my thing I’m tagging along mainly for the terrain aspect ;)
I’ve got plenty of Victorian buildings in the catalogue with more to follow in the coming months but I felt it would be a good opportunity to go to town, as it were, on some decent London terrain.
The idea is to have a selection of 300mm square boards with various layouts on each. They will be modular but it won’t be apparent looking at the individual boards, there’s also going to be sewers underneath but more on that at a later date.
The first inspiration picture is the one below as I really like the mix of building materials and the layout.
So, with that as a basis it’s onto the first board. I’m not copying the photo, just using it for ideas. I’m also in two minds about a road surface. The types of road surface in London were quite varied, from your typical setts to tarmacadam to compacted earth and even hex shaped wooden setts using Australian wood (although these didn’t last long because they got slippy when wet and too many horses were breaking their legs on the slimy surface). I’m going to pop into the local art shop and see if they have any 2mm foam and if so I’ll do typical setts as then I can do 5mm pavements.
Only one picture for now but of course there will be more to follow :)

I like that loads, I could get lost in that subject...
-
Good start. Looking forward to playing on this when it's done.
-
It’s not finished yet?
:D
Great beginning
-
I have some 2mm foam you can have
-
Looking good, can't wait to get hunting through the fog bound streets of old London town. ;D

It's looking great as always, Jim.
I wonder: the siding of the building to the left, are the horisontal boards cut individually or is it a profiled polystyrene sheet?
-
Thanks chaps :)

The clapboard is 0.8m balsa wood but cut into strips by hand and then glued on with reckless abandon ;)
Got some foam from Giles and have done a test; seems to do the job. I've also made some 25mm bases and these will be moulded and cast and put on the website in a week or so. I'm using some brass tube that's been shaped into a decent representation of a sett and it's just a case of pressing it in to the foam although I can't do that much at a time because it hurt my arthritic thumbs lol

Here's some foam on a baseboard. The blue foam is too thick so I'll need to get some thinner stuff (3mm probably). There are a couple of gaps for sewer grates and I'll also make a hole for manhole cover. Obviously it'll look better once that awful green has been painted over lol

You are doing a great job! I mark this thread and will follow it with great interest!
Cheers!
-
Love the period. Love your work.
-
That's really nice looking terrain! :-*
Looking good, can't wait to get hunting through the fog bound streets of old London town. ;D
lol lol lol lol lol
-
Thanks chaps :)
Done the first section of road but I’m stopping now as it’s really buggered my thumb. I tried a
little jewlers hammer buts it’s not as accurate or quick. I’ve got three different sized jigs for the setts.
Gonna pop into town and see about some thicker foam for the pavements (3mm or so) otherwise I’ll have to stick an intermediary layer inbetween.
-
I know it's called Limehouse, but I'm not sure about the colour of the roads lol lol lol
-
B-limey, that's nice. :o
-
The paving works a treat.
-
I know it's called Limehouse, but I'm not sure about the colour of the roads lol lol lol

I know it's called Limehouse, but I'm not sure about the colour of the roads lol lol lol
I remember one of those "Jack The Ripper Walks" several years ago, someone warned: "Watch out for the SLIME in the street", and other someone promptly replied: "Thanks, I got distracted watching the LIME on the HOUSE!" lol
-
Thanks again, apart from Mark, who can get his coat ;D
Finished the setts for this board and will hopefully carry on with the pavements tomorrow. The little round disc is a placeholder for a manhole cover which will be lasered acrylic. The buildings on the left and in the back are only there to give an idea of the cramped feeling I'm going for. The discussion over this has led to having removable roofs, which isn't a problem on the lasered buildings bu the scratch built ones will need some remedial work.

Plenty more to go and I do need to loo at the layout for other boards.
-
Looking very fine indeed.
-
Great start mate! Buildings are up to your usual high standard, but the paving is great! :o Could you not cast the roads as well as the mini-bases to save a bit of time?
-
Going to be a corker!
-
This looks very impressive. :-*
Please can you show a close up of the tool you used to make the cobbles?
-
Cheers fellas :)

Could've done but I want each tile to be individual and there's a good chance the road widths won't be the same across multiple boards (I'm also to impatient to wait for the process as I wanted to crack on with it whist the enthusiasm was still there ;) ).
Please can you show a close up of the tool you used to make the cobbles?
Of course. Very simple squashed brass tube that's been sanded a bit.

Thank you :)
-
I meant to ask as well...why are you using foam for the pavements? Would your usual lasered pvc not be better?
-
Thank you :)
Pleasure :)
I meant to ask as well...why are you using foam for the pavements? Would your usual lasered pvc not be better?
I can get a lot more variation in the relief using the foam. Indenting rocks, knuckles, scraps of blue foam etc and I'll probably do some sort of ramp on at least one of the boards and this stuff will fit to the contours quite nicely :)
-
Looking great already :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
will follow this thread :-* :-* :-*
-
Ditto, always learn a lot here.
I've also made some 25mm bases and these will be moulded and cast and put on the website in a week or so.
and those will be useful :)
-
Cracking start! :o
How many boards are needed for a proper game?
-
Thanks chaps :)
How many boards are needed for a proper game?
Hoping only four to make a 2x2 but we know how these things go lol
Got some quick colour tests done for the bits done so far. Relatively happy with them although I think the London stock might need some more work.

Obviously there’s still a lot of details and detritus to add but the rugby’s on so I’m distracted :)
-
Looking splendidly grim already :)
-
Cheers Richard :)
Got the pavement done for the house side and started adding details and detritus. I think a lot of the detritus could be left loose and gathered up at the end of a game (newspapers, wheels, boxes etc) but I need to add some horse manure and general dirt/shit.
I'm still drawing up the warehouse for the opposite side and I'll hopefully get this cut out this week. The intention for interiors is to keep them plain and simple so just wallpaper/painted surfaces but the warehouse will have catwalks for the two upper levels and some sort of ladder access.
Roofs still to do and I think there might be an option to have little angled bases that can sit on the roof apexes to allow for rooftop action although this might be a little dangerous for the figures lol Lights have also been mentioned but we'll have to see about that one...

Great work James! As always, your weathering is top notch :-* :-*

-
Perfect ;D
-
Most excellent progress 8)
Very Ripper Street ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)
-
That not only looks great it looks like fast progress!
I caught a little of this on TV:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059764/
Sherlock Holmes hunts Jack the Ripper through what looks like this terrain, with plenty of ideas for other buildings :)
https://cinemaderien.fr/a-study-in-terror-sherlock-holmes-contre-jack-leventreur/
-
It´s going to be perfect! :-*
-
The foam pavements DO look better! Now that see them! 8)
-
Cheers fellas :)
That not only looks great it looks like fast progress!
I had a couple of 'me' days away from commissions and casting, it's going to slow back down again now lol I've added that one to the list of Victorian looking films to watch and it's a long list :)
The foam pavements DO look better! Now that see them! 8)
I wasn't sure myself either but the result is better than I hoped for.
-
I really like the brick and wood building combination. Well done.

I'm using some brass tube that's been shaped into a decent representation of a sett and it's just a case of pressing it in to the foam although I can't do that much at a time because it hurt my arthritic thumbs lol
So you are using the brass tube as some kind of cobble stamp. Still seems pretty time consuming. Have you considered soldering several tubes next to each other to get an even more effective tool?
(The whole thing looks gorgeous, mind, I am just interested in how you could make the whole process more efficient).
-
Make a reverse stamp and mould that in pewter?
The whole thing looks brill.

The brass tube is a stamp and the foam takes it quite well. I thought about putting several together but the anal retard in me couldn't handle seeing the repeat pattern lol
It doesn't take too long though and it's quite easy to stop in mid flow ad then pick it up again later. Most of the boards will ave about the same or even less of the setts so I'm not too bothered.
Make a reverse stamp and mould that in pewter?
See above ;)
-
...couldn't handle seeing the repeat pattern lol
I agree 100%. The eye is more clever than the hand ;)
-
Fair enough. They look fantastic as is, so more power to you if you can keep going at it.
I'm going to be doing my own boards in 60mm scale anyway, so I'll likely just use the Lemax cobblestone mats and paint those. :)
-
Awesome! :o :o :o the brass tube is a great concept!
-
Thanks again fellas :)

Looking forward to seeing that as I'm loving your project 8)
the brass tube is a great concept!
Alas, it's not mine, it's probably been around for years and years. I got it from the afv modelers.
-
Alas, it's not mine, it's probably been around for years and years. I got it from the afv modelers.
Of course. Go far back enough some bronze age modeller will claim they learned it from some stone age fucker. That's not the important bit, it's how you implement it. :)
-
lol
I bet it started even earlier than that. Opposable thumbs have been the root of all evil lol
-
James this is stunning....
glad the foam was of use...for those of you interested this is the stuff
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Frostgrave%20Terrain/ffg8_zps2ysdnf9q.jpg)
from the craft section in the pound shop. I have seen self adhesive ones as well.
-
Amazing build, love your project!
-
Come on James: there’s an update due! :D
-
I'll base a couple of figures first and then I'll post ;D
-
Well, got some figures painted and another building well on the way.
The figures are a mix but mainly Foundry, the copper and merchant I've had for ages but had them rebased. Apologies for the slightly blurred photos.
And a little scene setting :)

I've added a lasered manhole cover to the road surface and although I've got a decent manure representation (see figure bases) I'm still being a pedant about putting it on. I suppose I'll start with a bit, see if I like it and if so I'll add more.
Here is the final building for this particular tile, a warehouse or tenement/poor house etc. Still the roof, limited internals and external details like drainpipes, steps etc but it' not far off. I'm also quite pleased with the London stock colour as it's a bit different from the terrace house. The space in the top left is for a projecting winch that'll be contained in a clapboard protrusion.

Brilliant! Excellent update! :-*
Is this a game for BLAM this year?
-
Thanks gents :)
Is this a game for BLAM this year?
That's the idea :)
-
Wow!
-
Lovely really like the atmospheric photos :-* :-* :-*
Love the Fagan character in the shadows of the alley
Great painting on the figures But I don't like the figures with the huge big shoulders
and you manure looks shit ;)
-
and you manure looks shit ;)
Good lol
The large shouldered figures are from Foundry and are the newer ones that Tim Prowse did (I think). Some of them are very chunky and square and I'm debating whether or not to do them. The ones I've done so far are the best of the bunch.
-
Brilliant scenery and I love the minis too, terrific thread :)
-
Fantastic stuff. Very Ripper Street.
-
This looks so amazing!
What rules are you going to play with?

Thoroughly enjoying catching up with Silent Invaders thread and then
... BLAM! ...
Lurking just below is your thread :o
More great interpretation and human sacrifice ...
Fantastic.

-
Now the picture you sent me makes sense! lol lol
Looking good old chum :-*
Are you thinking of adding any 'walkways' between buildings?
-
Cheers fellas :)
... BLAM! ...
Yes, it should be there ;)
Are you thinking of adding any 'walkways' between buildings?
Potentially but not too many.
-
I'm going to have a go a the cobbles. Prepare for moaning and bitching lol.
-
Well, had a go with some lighting on the warehouse (comment has been passed o the size of the lanterns but they'll do for now ;) ). They are from China I believe but Silent Invader will have to tell you exactly frombwhere as they were his :D
For now they are taped underneath the building but I will be putting a switch on them. Still the pavement on the other side to do of course along with other shit :D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/2619-230218163835.jpeg)
-
That looks the business :o :-*
In defence of the lamps, some of the buildings in the Lost London book have huuuuuuge wall lamps.
Maybe there's a market for 28mm wall lamps...... ::)
-
Well I like them! I remember there used to be some similar looking lamps on Edinburgh and they were actually massive.
-
Thanks chaps :)
They'll stay then.
-
Why was I not informed of this Thread?! Everything is looking great. Looking forward to what variations to the rules you come up with. Joker to trigger Dr Jekyl's transformation?
-
Thanks :)
Nick is looking after the mods and should let us know in due course what they may be.
-
...and now he even has lights! :o
Are you planning on playing in the dark? lol What's next for the real Victorian experience?....smoke machines for fog?......scent machines giving out a damp pee smell?....a couple of rats set loose, running around your feet? ;)
-
Just wait till October lol
-
I'd take the snell of urine for granted :D
It is a cracking piece of work though. Will it go on the shop as facades can be very handy for these sort of set ups.
-
Yes, I'm designing a few a the moment and I'll show them when they are ready for release :)
-
Spiffing. :D
I think the larger lamps look fine on a warehouse - some period examples have glass 3 or 4 times the size of a head. ;)
-

I hope you like what we come up with. ;D
-
The lights are a great touch :-* :-* :-*
I don't think they look to big
but I do think it is an extreme solution for the bad lighting in the berrylands
-
I have only just found this, and wow.
Words cannot do this justice, looking forward to see what else is added.
-
Very atmospheric.
-
stunning.....
-
Thanks chaps :)
The tile should be finished later today (snow day!)
-
Lovely shit, James. So many nice colour tones and textures.
-
Well, tile 1 is complete apart form the manure but I'll do that all in one go so the consistency looks the same.
The roofs are removable but the interiors aren't done yet but it's not that important at the moment. Now ot decide the layout for tile 2...

Many thanks chaps :)
How many tiles are you doing?
Four initially along with some separate wharves.

That's looking very tidy indeed.

PERFECT!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Suitably Dickensian. Just needs the aforementioned manure & other grot.
-
That is excellent.

Beautiful.

Good golly Mrs. Molly. That’s impressive.

That is a museum piece now! :-*

Wow! great work, I can see the fog oozing down the street and the sound of footsteps echoing off the cobbles before a blood curdling scream echoes through the night!

Many thanks for the replies gents :)

Hot dang, that is great!
Bravo!

Looks amazing James, super realistic weathering and I really like the individual planks on that timber warehouse.
Cheers
Matt

Thanks again chaps. Should have tile two designed/roughed out later today .
-
Right then, tile 2.
Got a couple of quick photos but will have better ones later in the week when there’s more substance to the tile.
I’ve gone for a mix of Georgian and Victorian this time. The blank space next to the arch will be a full scratch build and probably rendered with a couple of gables. The Georgian house will have a mansard (with projecting windows and tiled sides). The clear looking building will probably be changed for a slightly wider pub with an angled door in the corner.
Now there will be some areas that have overlapping windows and walls so I’m thinking of having some brick or rendered ‘blanking plates’ to fill the gaps where windows probably shouldn’t be.
-
I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't already been said. Excellent buildings as always. I think the wooden clapboard is a fantastic piece of work and the rendered side of the same building also.
The roof slates look laser cut, are they yours or warbases and please don't say you cut them individually or someone needs to send for the men in white coats.
The window 'glass' in the wood building looks better than the brick one, but maybe if you are putting interiors in to the brick one that will change.
Do you envisage figures using the building interiors, I imagine it's a long way down, 3 floors looks to be about 10" presumably you will have individual levels that lift out? Sounds madness.
Lastly the cobble setts look way better than any commercial ones because you don't have join lines visible, even with duff thumbs. Thanks for showing the brass tools to create this, I bought some of the same foam to do the same thing but of course not got round to it.
How do you think it will stand up to your gamers leaning on it and creating additional indentations. Maybe chop the hands off the first one to do it and it's no longer a worry. :D :D
Excellent just excellent
-
I like the idea of the angled building corner. You could even have a third tile with an open backed yard going into the street/Alley corresponding with the pub rear that could either be used in conjunction with the pub tile or separately.
If that made any sense?
-
Cheers gents :)

The tiles are from here (scroll to the bottom) http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/victorianbuildings.html (http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/victorianbuildings.html) . A few years ago I would've done them by hand but not anymore ;)
Interiors will just be roof access and if the figure is in that space then it is assumed it will be in the house somewhere. Haven't tried it yet so we'll have to see, which leads onto the windows bit. For now I would like to detail the lower floors on some of the buildings just because so in the brick building case they will probably stay a they are. The chaps I game with are gentle souls really and it's usually me who's the clumsy one lol
If that made any sense?
Just about ;)

Ooooh archways! We like archways!
That is looking authentically claustrophobic....... in a good way. :-*
-
Ooooh archways! We like archways!
Yes, Yes!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely stuff mate! :o My only concern is the amount of space you’ll have to play in around the outside of those buildings, in that last pic, it looks a bit tight! :?
-
Yeah, it is a bit cramped but the buildings are removable so once movement and range measuring are done they will get replaced to keep the aesthetic :)

How is a Pickelhaube-wearing invader supposed to drive his steam tanks through THAT? :o
-
Very carefully lol
The thing is you see, I know the widths between the buildings but no one else does ;) ;)
-
Outstanding work!

Perfidious Albion at its best. ;) lol

Well, I managed to get my gang sorted, Bilbbly's Bashers. A rough set of northern coves come down to the big smoke to cause a bit of a rumpus :D

A fine opponent for my Chiswick Chaps Cricket Club, I´d say!

They have turned out well. I like those bases, complete with horse shit.

Well, I managed to get my gang sorted, Bilbbly's Bashers. A rough set of northern coves come down to the big smoke to cause a bit of a rumpus
Well,no stereotyping there then ! ;) lol
It all looks fantastic :)
-
Very atmospheric, I can almost smell them from here :-X
-
Many thanks chaps :)
Well,no stereotyping there then ! ;) lol
I was thinking of making them Welsh but that would’ve been too easy ;)

Splendid bunch of villains. They did a fine job in assisting some gentlemanly types in seeing off a vicious nightclub owner and his Vampire brides last night. Photos to follow. ;)

Lovely miniatures to match superb terrain. So, not Norf London, but “Oop North” then?
They deserve a suitable battle cry:
“There’s nowt wrong wi owt what mithering clutterbucks don’t barley grummit”.

Remarkably atmospheric. This really is some of your best work James and that is saying a lot. The detail on the buildings makes you want to gaze at it for ages.
-
ace indeed!
-
Fantastic!
-
:o :o :o
Only just seen this!
How the bloody hell did I miss it until now?
Well worth it, though, when you get to gaze at so much at one time.
:D
All looking wonderful, mate.
The buildings are top drawer, of course, and I am seriously impressed with the finished look of the clapboard, that is some good drybrushing skills there, that be.
8) 8) 8)
I have to echo the other fella and say that I reckon them there Northern thugs look like some of your best work, bloody brilliant!
:-* :-* :-*
Not that impressed with the streets, though.
A 'proper' modeller would not have cheated and would have made individual setts out of blue foam and stuck them on one at a time....
-
Simply superb.
-
Thanks chaps :)

Haha, Im glad those buildings are removable, I know the lights and details would not last one game with some of the gamers I play with otherwise, lol lol lol Looking at you Vladimir ;D
Bibblies Bashers look like right ruffians. I wouldn't want to be walking home with anything in my pockets and meet them in one of those alley's.
Cheers
Matt

grandiose :o :o :-* I'm ashamed to have missed this link :? bravo Jim

Thanks again chaps :)
Should have a tile 2 update later in the week.

Lovely jubbly :-*

What a fantastic project.... :o
You are definately doing the best terrain in the world.....;)
Cheers,
Don

Wow...

They ARE real houses.
James is very big, ya know...
;)
-
Just noticed the weathering detail to the gable eaves on tile one in the above photos. Very nicely done.
-
A project of Bibbly-cal dimensions! Cheers!
-
Fantastic. Terrific. Awesome. Let me go to the dictionary for more words.
-
Thanks again fellas :)
-
Gorgeous.
How about a couple of high level iron footbridges running between the upper storeys of the facing warehouses, like you see at the old Sarsons vinegar maltings in Southwark? As seen from the train just before it gets into London Bridge station...
-
Or like in Bermondsey :)
Yes, I'll be doing something like that at a later date.
-
Got a couple more buildings done for this project, one for tile two and the other for a place as of yet undetermined :)
Photos are a bit washed out as the colour is a bit more intense in real life.

Great build :-*

Yes it does Andy, nice observation and an idea for a scenario when they next play a game :)

Looking good, mate, but I have rumbled you!
You are taking pictures of real buildings and photoshopping the rest of the picture out, aren't you?
>:D >:D
-
looking fantastic
-
Thanks chaps :)
-
What an amazing set up these buildings make!
-
Count Stringfellow riding on a tugboat, that’s not something you see every day lol
A great game, it looked excellent and provided plenty of laughs and dead Vampire Hunters lol
-
I did get this shot of the count reenacting that well known scene from Titanic when he thought no one was looking.
It was indeed a fun game.
-
Thanks again chaps :)
Not got a report as such just a selection of photos from the game. Suffice to say, shitty vampires get beaten easily lol

It was a beautiful board to play on James.
And I thoroughly enjoyed the game :D
-
The board was indeed lovely. The new buildings really were something special.
-
Great board :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
The amount of buildings is amazing
-
This is great.
I'm once again amazed!
-
Your stuff is amazing & an inspiration to many :)
-
Thank you very much gents :)
-
Did you mend the one you knocked to the floor and shattered into several pieces? :D
It was all looking so good until then... >:D lol
-
lol
Nope, it's still in it's box thinking about what it did lol
-
I'm just glad it wasn't me!
-
I don't have a box long enough ;D
-
lol you knew what I meant!
-
Oooh, that's an impressive board you have there! Must be a real joy to play on it.
-
It was fun, if a bit fiddly :)
I was given this idea by the Silent Invader, some facades for the edge of the table. They’ll help to give the appearance of a full board without using all the available space. Just the one for now but there will be others.
It uses up the mistakes I’ve got from the terrace houses I produce. There will be return walls of about one to two inches but I’m unsure of whether to seal the back with black card or to leave it open and have ‘platforms’ for figures to be placed on.
-
Very nice!
Building flats along the backdrop are an old model railroader trick.
-
Marvellous. You'll still need a railway train to drop onto an unsuspecting East End street market, though. ;)
-
Great idea! Eager to see how you will employ the chosen facade!
-
Thanks chaps :)
Marvellous. You'll still need a railway train to drop onto an unsuspecting East End street market, though. ;)
Working on some viaduct sections at the moment but need a few more to span the table. I do know that starting a train will be a slippery slope that I don’t want to start sliding down yet lol
-
That's a very useful building facade, particularly with the short return. Will it be available in your catalogue?
-
Possibly. The returns and rear will be scratch built but drawing them in and altering the original shouldn’t be a problem. The size might need to be looked at though to get optimal with the available material size.
-
That’s a stunning looking table that just gets better with every addition.
Low relief facades would be very useful, I’d definitely suggest some degree of ledge/wall division just to allow a (minimal) level of set decoration. Say just enough room to fit a bath tub and dither over wallpaper choices :)
-

That makes sense. It's a good idea from Silent Invader, well executed by yourself.

I think it’s fabulous :D

I know a supplier of tin baths :D
I think what I am going to do is fill the table with externally finished buildings and then start on the interiors. I've got quite a few Victorian wallpapers somewhere in my reference folders ;)
-
I meant to post these for you a while ago. The pics are from the last train show I went to. I can't remember the manufacturers, but I knew you'd probably want to build your own anywho! There's some good ideas for facades in there(especially the first pic).....

Cheers mate, some good ideas there. It also shows what should be done with mdf buildings :D
-
Looks like Petite Properties:
https://www.petite-properties.com
I’ve been using their 1/48th scale stuff and it’s very good. I’d imagine their 20mm/OO kit is just as good.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
I was thinking of making them Welsh but that would’ve been too easy ;)
::), you still could, they'd look the same but they'd have great singing voices and access to better coal for their steam carriage.
Fantastic work as usual.
-
Facade is very good but I am not sure I would like using a lot of them, you will really struggle to get "line of sight" through your buildings as they are with out stuff round the edges.
I did a few for my pirate table and they made it difficult to see "line of sight" great for photo shoots though :D
-
Stunning additions old chum. That brick colour on the Georgian frontages is perfect!
What can we expect next?
-
Lovely building James. Nice to see Victorian builfdings more then 2 stories high for game terrain. Perfect for VSF flyers to crash into lol
-
Thanks chaps :)

They won't be stuck to the playing surface so it shouldn't be to much of a problem. I've also got an overhead laser pointerthat we've used in the past (with accompanying pew pew noises lol)
What can we expect next?
Viaduct :D
Perfect for VSF flyers to crash into lol
You're like an old, broken record ::) lol
-
Lovely stuff!
-
Thanks :)
I’ve got two sections of viaduct built but they need a bit of tweaking and pruning before I take photos so for now here are some wips of the second facade.
The Georgian frontage still needs to be completed and it’ll be done as rendered with medium fancy windows. The Victorian builds on either side however are just about done. Two shops and a normal house. I’ve got a load of drainpipe stock cut which will be sprayed but I still need to make the hopper heads.

Another very useful, very nifty looking bit of terrain.
-
Thanks :)
The square window on the shop is removable to allow posters and whatnot to go behind because at the rear it's a normal terrace frontage.
-
The bumped out window is a lovely touch :-*
-
The bumped out window is a lovely touch :-*
It is.
-
that is really nice indeed
-
Cheers fellas :)
I might get the Georgian frontage done today but I've got a few other things to sort out before hand.
-
Lovely Jubbly, Bubbles!
:-* :-*
-
That is bang on, sunshine! :-* :-*
That Georgian shop front is on my need list! Better than my MDF one you love so much lol
-
Thanks chaps :)
Better than my MDF one you love so much lol
Stop buying them then ;D
-
lol Your fault for not making these beauties sooner.
-
You have my number... ;D
-
Next up is some viaduct sections. 200mm long, 90mm wide and the intention is to have them on the website. There's still a bit of tweaking needed with the design, fortunately I get to put together and paint the sample versions :)
The main idea is to have them interlocking so they don't come apart during play. Seems fine at the moment but could be doing with being a little bit looser. The rails and sleepers aren't done yet but I have plans for them which should ease assembly.
Please excuse the rushed, over exposed photos lol
Here are the joint parts, positive and negative.

and here are the sections joined together.
And of course with a train :)

And a quickly thrown together beauty shot
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/33/2619-210518160106.jpeg)
Obviously there's drybrushing, weathering and posters to add (and maybe some lamps under the arch) but I think I'll need to get a few more done first so there's at least four foots worth.
-
Nice bit of engineering there James, looking great :)
-
That viaduct is fantastic
Are we going to see a Whitechapel train wreck?
-
Are you doing the train too?
-
Ohhh! I like that a lot! :-* very useful mate! Do you know the train has a funny shaped piece of coal that looks like a dice? ;)
Have you ever thought of doing sci fi viaduct sections? There seems to be a gap in the market for decent ones! All the mdf ones look like mdf! :? A man of your skills could do an amazing one, you know....for something like 2000ad! ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Are we going to see a Whitechapel train wreck?
Probably not but it's an idea ;)

Very neat James. :-*
Will you be adding units to go into the arches?
-
Very impressive. It does look a lot more realistic than some others I've seen.
-
More lovely work Jim
-
Them there are some lovely arches.
8) 8)
Extremely versatile as well as I can even see a few dodgy dealers using them as lock ups.
;)
-
Cheers again fellas :)
Will you be adding units to go into the arches?
Yes, got them drawn up but not cut yet. Maybe in a week or two.
-
A cracking bit of work :) & its good to see someone else rolls dice like me as I noticed the dice on the train was a one :( lol
-
Proper Victorian arches, them! :-*
A brilliant addition to the tabletop.
-
Top job!
-
I always wanted to do some of those. Another idea nicked...
-
Loving this thread, that Georgian Front is particularly useful looking but all of that looks good.
-
Thanks gents :)

lol
Yeah, I don't have the best of luck.
-
Brilliant work, James. Hope to see more

Well, it’s been decided that I’ll be putting on a Limehouse participation game for next years Salute (it was decided for me lol). The basic layout is sorted and I’ll do a decent sketch of it soon enough but here is a basic start.
The idea is to have a narrow section of river at one end and a viaduct at the other with plenty of buildings and ‘stuff’ in between. They are limiting the tables sizes for trader games next year to 6x4/6x5 which means I’ll be able to a decently detailed board in time.
First off is planning the river edge with wharves, part of a bridge and a slipway. There should be plenty of ins and outs to draw the eye and as many levels as possible (which won’t be that many unfortunately).
The bridge is a mock up but the stanchions will be the ones I’ll be using and the frontage will hopefully just sit up against the boards relatively seamlessly. The buildings aren’t the ones that will be there in the final version but they will be on the board (somewhere).

There won’t be much else done on this for a little while, I just had to get a bit done tonight whilst the muse whacked me round the head lol
-
It is coming out very nice! I'm sure the viaduct part of the table will be a catch-eye!
-
The highlight of Salute 2019. :D
-
Looks great already :)
-
Looking fantastic. Are you going to plaster the walls with flyposters for music hall shows and penny dreadfuls like they did on Ripper Street?
Just not too sure about the floating bathtub... looks very playable, but possibly a little comical alongside what I’m sure will be a wonderfully realistic looking set of wharves and buildings?
Will the lentil cobblestones be making a reappearance? :)

Thanks chaps :)
Plenty of posters, yes. The ‘bathtub’ (gee, thanks ::) lol) is from the Mars project and won’t bethere in the day. It’s the only boat I have at the moment. I have the plans for a river barge and a coal barge and will endeavour to have realistic shipping there instead.
Possible lentils but will mainly be EPS foam setts :)
-
That’s looking great mate! Loving the bridge! :-*
What about doing the river ar low tide? Most of it could be mud that characters could go through at a reduced pace? You could have a boat shored up on its side too.
-
Promising start to another great table.
-
Cheers :)

Thought about that and it’s a lot more work. There’s going to be a slipway at the other end of the river section and I’d like not to have it sticking out for a couple of feet lol

A nice detailed layout with lots of little hidden details will look great.

really good start . Looking forward seeing it at Salute
-
It will look wonderfully realistic 8)

That’s going to look so good :o
Like that solution to big Thames bridges, it’s already got the London dockside feel to it.
-
Great idea! it's going to look excellent.
How about adding one of the riverside inns/taverns that lined the Thames?

Plenty of time to research the thing properly then....

Got a little game in last night although there’s no real report and these photos were taken afterwards with ‘mood lighting’ lol

Ouch! lol

Very cool photos.
I have gone back and looked at the whole thread again.
(Not the first time I have done that.)
Great terrain.
-
Very effective, a great set-up.
-
You really need to do something about that undead problem.
-
It was an enjoyable game using a gothic horror version of Fistful of Lead.
Count Stringfellow and his vampire wives and henchmen made a meal of Professor Hertz van Rental's team of Vampire Hunters, but they were in turn defeated by the local back street toughs, - Bibbly's Bashers

Yup lol

Salute is looming and so it’s time to continue the work on Limehouse :)
First off is a bit of warehouse detail. The parts are removable for ease of spraying/painting.
It’s clear acrylic for the time being but taken against a dark background to show it up a bit better.
The chain is model ship chain and it’s attached with bent brass rod that’s drilled in place.

Brill! :o More please! ;)
-
Thanks gents :)
More during the week :D
-
Loving that crane.
-
That is outstanding!
-
Thanks :)
Didn’t work on this (as per usual) but tomorrow will be an almost full day working on the dockyard and associated buildings :)
Got a little bit of dockyard scatter done and will paint it tomorrow. They look large but are in scale. Some of the ropes and chains used in shipyards were bigger than these.

I like those; plenty of cover to hide behind.
Nice.

Unless you go with railway stuff, which is often expensive, there's not a lot of decent, realistic dock side stuff out there. Good to see this getting covered.

Can’t wait to see the ships hull half built ;D ;)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Although I'm NOT building The Great Western ;D
Mastering some walls that will be cast up. The pillar cap will be drawn up and printed. The walls will surround the shipyard hence why I will need a lot of them. Debating on fancy gates or utilitarian wooden ones ???
-
Fancy gates for horse-drawn carriages, and a wooden one designed for just pedestrians?
-
Unfortunately you can't see much of the actual gates, but this is a nice one of the entrance.
-
Nice pic Steve. ;D
-
If you are ever in the area, Portsmouth dockyards are well worth a visit.
Not just those gates, but also:-
H.M.S. Victory; The Mary Rose; a recently restored WW1 'patrol boat; H.M.S. Warrior
(this one scared the French as it was the first British warship to have washing machines!);
several museums (both in the docks & within a few miles) Gift shops & eateries,
then a short boat/taxi ride to Gosport will get you to the Submarine museum.
The last time I went they pointed out to me that the ticket is valid for a year, so you
can go back.
-
So, some slipway progress. Just the entrance for now, still working on the side walls. I think I'll have some clear but dirty glazing above the brickwork; maybe 20mm or so before the roof starts to angle upwards. The doors slide as we might have need for it in normal games. Brick sheet supplies will hopefully be here tomorrow :)

Very probably as the walls will be sectional.
If you are ever in the area, Portsmouth dockyards are well worth a visit.
Have been a few times and will no doubt go again as I haven't seen the Mary Rose out of 'continment'.
-
Coming out very nice!
Following this thread with incessant interest! Cheers!
-
Thanks :)
Painted the front and back of the front elevation. To make it easy to store I'll be magnetising the walls and possibly roof. I've got some white decals on order that I'll use for the lettering; hopefully it won't go wrong o_o

Wow - that looks fabulous :-*

Lovely textures and colours, James.

This is not modelling or painting, this is pure witchcraft! o_o
Seriously, I love every single bit of this.
-
Brilliant James :)
-
Fantastic work :) is the brick work printed parer or painted ?
-
Thank you kindly gents :)
is the brick work printed parer or painted ?
All painted, sprays, speckles, inks, drybrushing and washes.
Got some weathering done on a section of dockside and put the two together (even though they won’t be together on the table).

Great stuff. Love the gritty look to the brickwork.
-
really nice the weathering is ace!
-
Amazing work, old chap!
-
Started watching 'Taboo' - this thread is perfectly representing gritty docks. Well, maybe more muck on the ground/bottom of the walls. Shit seems to be everywhere in Victorian times. lol
-
Thanks all :)

It's a great series (although set earlier than what I'm doing) and there's another two in the pipeline apparently 8)
Yes, there was shit everywhere lol Interesting to note that a lot of road surfaces were made from end on, hexed shaped Australian wood but it was swapped out for the more commonly known granite sets because when they got wet from rain, horse piss and excrement they got incredibly slippery and there was a serious problem with horses breaking their legs :?
I won't be having that much shit everywhere but it will be visible lol
-
Lovely the details as always are amazing :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
The weathering is great as well
Really like how you have painted the coil of rope

I am currently going through Peaky Blinders on Netflix and was thinking this would be perfect for a game featuring mobsters from Birmingham.
-
That's a fantastic build, Jim.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Finished the walls on another warehouse today. The roof will be corrugated Iron/steel with roof lights.
Played around with a little setup and there’s also some shots of it on it’s own. Still debating on the actual playing surface and will probably go for a mix of fine textured paint and some sort of cobbles with the possibility of some flags around somewhere.

It’s about 300mm long and around 112mm wide (I think).

Brilliant!

You do not stop to amaze me. The entire project is truly masterful work and makes me horribly envious... I love it!
-
beautiful building :-* :-*
-
Great setup :-* :-* :-*
It is going to be a stunning table
What are you doing with the interiors?
-
absolutely top notch
-
Thanks all :)
What are you doing with the interiors?
Ideally have details inside, realistically just have them blank but painted. The houses are intentioned just to the have the top floor accessible but with luck the players will stay outside lol
-
I have always favoured having floorplans on a side table.
That way the building doesn't have to come apart AND
you can vary the interior from game to game (e.g.
game one = one big room, but game two = several small rooms)
It keeps the games fresh & stops (some) gamesmanship, such as
the player who 'knows' the quickest route through a series of buildings
even thou they are playing a different character in a different town.
-
Looks fantastic, a table to aspire to :)
-
So, every good Gothic Horror table needs a cemetery and this one will be no different. Just a layout sketch for now but I’ll be starting it soon enough. The figure is on a 25mm base. Short walls with railings on top, tall columns, several mausoleums, some brambles and a few ruined railings to allow figures to pass through.

It’s a good idea but table space is limited at Salute this year. I’ll probably do something similar for private games though :)
-
Looking forward to this
What are you going to use for brambles?

Cheers Colin, I’ve got some old horsehair stuff that’ll suffice. It’s been painted black and has flock all over it.
-
Started on the cemetery walls. Columns will be cast possibly with the low sections but I think I'm going to make a fancy wall section to go with the column and cast that.

Very impressive - I’d thought they were extruded 8)
And ta :)

Looking good!

Thanks fellas :)
So, I’m happy with how things are going to be done with the previous elements and will get them cranked out over the coming weeks so now it’s onto some terraces that’ll be sat in the middle of the table.
Still quite a few details to do for this one (door knobs, posters, roofs, chimneys etc) and there will be others; the idea being that several of these short ‘runs’ will form an open square with hopefully plenty of character.

That is very special - love the structure, details, colours ... looking forward to seeing it finished. :-*

This really is shaping up to be something spectacular. I very much like the structure of this piece, and the colouration.

This ones looking excellent. It's all the little details which elevate these to perfection! Marvellous! ;D

Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Love the Fagan figure as well

Foundry for the most part with a couple of others of which I can’t quite remember.

Nicely painted though :)

-
superb!

Great details and colours. Love the red oxide paint on the metal parts. 8)
-
This thread is like an enjoyable version of Grand Designs, sans the irritating yuppy bastards who casually reveal they have gone £400,000 over budget on the endangered hardwood floors and throw cushions in the subterranean living space.
I reckon Jim should comission a 28mm Kevin McCloud figure to include for size reference in all shots. Ideal for WIP photos.
Bloody nice, as usual.
-
Yeah, great colours! :-*
How are you giving your brick texture? Is that paint 'flicked' on?
-
Amazing it so life like :)

After a fashion, yes but using spray cans.

Yeah, it always irritates me how good his painting is! lol

Wonderful warehouse James :-*

I really like to have big buildings on my gaming tables for the look of it, although I noticed that they are in fact somewhat difficult to use. Actually most rule systems allow a normal move of around 6" . I played a lot of games where miniatures were mostly running around buildings playing hide and seek without ever getting a LOS to an opponent. That made some rather boring games without much action and time running short in the end or no results at all, when there was a limited number of turns agreed on before the game.
Great building anyway! I wish I had it...
-
Thanks chaps :)

Interesting point. We’ve never had a problem with that so far although the tables we play on are quite small with only five/six figures per side. There can be quite a bit of melee when we play which negates the problem somewhat.
-
Just limit the move distance? Moving in built up areas normally requires a bit of caution, combined with a brief violent dash across open roads.
Gorgeous looking Warehouse - is this headed for the catalogue at some point?

Wowsers!
-
You keep on impressing us!
-
Thanks gents :)
-
VERY nice!
Only a few reasons why I didn't make one like it:-
I would have to make a whole board full of similar (who ever heard of just one on its own?);
Not enough room to store half of London;
Lack of spare time, oh and, of course, a complete lack of skill.
Well done. I am very envious.
-
beautiful building guy :-* :-* :-*
-
Cracking job James 8)
-
One very impressive structure. Bravo.

Cheers fellas :)

Totes awesome-sauce balls :o :-*
And huge.
You’re going to need a bigger house for all this stuff.
-
So, slipway walls are 90% done and I’ve sorted the compound walls for it as well. Debating on whether to have wrought iron gates or slightly fancy wooden ones :?

If only he knew someone that had a grasp of the property market. ;)

Really enjoying the way this is progressing. What I especially like is they way your artistic side is developing and complimenting your training as an architectural model maker.
I've added a couple pictures ( although there 1950's its being going on for as long as there's been docks.) As just a musing on a detailing that can take you figures down to the water level in an intersting way. Its locally called 'Oss wash. Where the bargies and dockers use to wash ther horses.
Mark.

Splendid work, this is going to be one very impressive table.

Yep. Training is only half the battle. There are some things you just can’t teach. You’ve either got it or you haven’t.
He’s definitely coming on. Still got a way to go on the artistic side, but you have to remember he’s only a youngster.
lol lol lol
-
Thanks... I think...
;D
Got the bulk of a corner plot done for a terrace section. Windows to be lasered and slotted in after with suitable posters etc. The mansard also needs to be done and then a drain pipe and that should be just about it for this one.
Although I might put a street lamp protruding from the corner over where the doors going to go.

Brilliantl ;D
-
Damn nice work James! Suitably gritty.
Lon
-
:-* :-* :-* I haven't got the words to tell you how excellent that is.
-
Very smart. It's always nice to see stuff like corner units, there's something very pleasing about them visually.
-
8) :-*
-
Gorgeous.
I’m having an idea of Victorian shop outfitters working in the shell of the corner unit, brewing up a tea break/pagan spell as the nobs walk by :)
-
Thanks chaps :)

You can almost taste the smog! :-*

Fantastic work

Stunning

Excellent and good to see you adding 17th/18th century buildings into the mix.
I could do with a couple of those 17th century structures with the over-hang. Hint hint! ;)
-
Brilliant set up James. Looking forward to the finished corner ;)
-
Many thanks chaps :)
Nearly finished another building ‘block’ but still some details to finish off and add.

You know where I am :D

I'm blown away by your work, it like what you'd see on a movie set :)
-
:-* :-* :-*
Bloody hell, that's good.
The shopfronts are from the your catalogue, yes? Very useful bits indeed.
-
Blimey, that’s good 8)
-
So good! love the green :-* :-*
-
Cheers fellas :)
-
This has got be one of my favourite threads on here just now! :o
Stonkin’ work big chap! You really are capturing the down and dirty feel of a Victorian city.
-
May I ask how did you make the shop signs?
Handmade by you or bought?
-

Indeed, it almost looks as if it stinks...
-
Thanks again :)

Google images for suitable ones, scaled in cad then printed out and stuck on. Where it says ‘Butchers’ and ‘Bakers’ that was done in Rhino to get the arc of the lettering.
-
Have you got a big enough table for all these?
Actually never mind a big table have you got a big enough house for all these?
Is there a pic of all you buildings together
How many more are you going to build?
-
Superb
-
Thanks :)

So many questions lol
Table is around 4x4 for the game (it needs to be relatively crowded).
I have, for now.
Not yet but I'll be hoping to sort something out later next week when I start to put it all together.
Got a viaduct to finish off, a church and bridge to build and finish off facades and buildings that I already have (not much then lol)
-
Thanks again :)

You did a very serious job on this. Very well done! So realistic results1 Thank you for your answer!
-
That is brilliant.
-
Outstanding
-
Jeez I am super late to this thread but glad I found it. Incredible work, so wonderful to see scratch built pieces. I'm especially intrigued by your signage. They look great, perfectly worn and weathered.
-
Cheers :)
The church is almost done. Just the leaded roof side/rear windows and spire (printed) to go. Problem being is I’ve lost the bloody graveyard ::)

One more impressive job! :-*

Wow, nice :-*
It's a good size too, lovely work.

Delightful 8)

Missing graveyard?
Are you seriously telling us you have totally lost the plot????
I'll get me coat.
-
Looking great.
And wow, do you have some professional grave-robbers!

Thank you kindly chaps :)
Bridge is just about done. Road surface needs finishing off and I’m hoping there are some nice fancy lampposts on their way to go above the buttresses.

Took me a minute but I got there in the end lol

Lovely :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Oh my :-*
-
Two great looking additions.
Love them. :-*
-
Most impressive, in fact it's a hell of a lot more impressive than the actual bridges in Limehouse. I reckon there's a opportunity here. I reckon you could sell that bridge to a Yank and make an absolute killing.
-
amazing
-
Is the bridge going to be for sale on th website? :-*
-
Fab as always :-* :-* :-*
-
Brilliant James - you never fail to impress. :-*
-
Faaaaaaancy!
-
Many thanks for the comments, much appreciated :)
Is the bridge going to be for sale on th website? :-*
Nah, it’s cobbled together for the board and it would take too much faffing to make it ‘saleable’.
-
Beautiful craftsmanship, I am looking forward to seeing this in the flesh at Salute.
-
Thanks :)
Got the slipway and surrounding 'land' built (just a couple of finer details to do like cladding the front). I'll cover the foam in sand to match the existing boards and paint it all tomorrow. I should get the slipway roof done tomorrow as well.
-
Looking forward to seeing the photos of this in use. It'll be useful for a range of periods too, I reckon. Though I know you don't game WWII!
-
Wow! :o you really have out done yourself big chap! That's an inspired piece of building! :-* Is that all laser cut or styrene strip?
-
simply amazing !
-
Thanks chaps :)
Though I know you don't game WWII!
Certainly don't lol
Is that all laser cut or styrene strip?
The roof is all lasered but I might add a few cross trusses once the roof cladding is on, depends on how stable it is.
-
Gosh! Thats a huge build.
-
The game at salute is going to look turbo spectacular! :)
-
I wonder if you’ll win an award this year? It certainly looks like it’s going to be spectacular 8)
-
Thanks but I doubt it ;)
-
Lovely building :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Just needs a boat under construction on the slip and you are done ;D
-
Not for Saturday ;D
Last sneak peak before the day then plenty of photos afterwards :)
Still a few things to do but at least it won’t be an all nighter on the Friday lol

Is that Salute come around already, we want loads of photos
Lovely atmospherlc board, :-* :-* :-*
needs some lights as well as
-
It’s looking fantastic 8)
-
I say old chap that is absolutely the apes genua erigite. I am utterly regretful that I must miss the most esteemed Salute this year but please do ensure plenty of lithographic prints that I may peruse them in my study later.
-
very impressive
-
Many thanks chaps :)
Some buildings do have lamps on the outside but I’m not bothering with wiring them up for Salute as they won’t really show up. Games at home I can do it as the lights can be turned down :)
-
WOW. What a wonderful layout to play on. Bravo indeed.
-
Splendid James. Sorry I won’t be there this year :'(

its all looking rather splendid - best of luck on saturday

Very nice indeed :)
-
That is excellent. A spot of green in amongst the grime of Limehouse.
-
Blood looks better on fresh dandies.
Also wishing you all the best for Saturday James.
-
Cheers fellas :)
-
I hope there will be lots of photos?
-
Really nice!!!
And yes, we need a complete AAR. Please.
-
Sweet, looks far too nice for Limehouse :)
Although the blood splatter helps it fit in!
Have a great show.
-
I see you found the graveyard in for the show. I won't be going this year . So I'll wish you all the best for tomorrow .
And of course plenty of pictures. However I've no doubt plenty will turn up in magazines.
Mark.

Outstanding Terrain :o

I will add my congrats on a wonderful table.
Can't wait to see pics of the game in progress.

I also saw it on the day. A very atmospheric table, beautiful buildings.
-
That's an amazing table.
-
Jaw dropping :)
-
It is magnificent, both the vision and the execution giving it with a real sense of place and depth as such it is inspiring and (a little) over awing.
-
Belated thanks again chaps :)
Still going at this project and the newest addition is a smallish single property that would possibly pass as a pub. Still needs door details, a sign or two and probably a rendered chimney but it’s getting late lol
Everything is made from card apart from the windows and doors which are lasered acrylic.

-
That’s an interesting shape. 8)
Very nicely done :-*
-
Shape-wise that's not unlike some of the buildings in York City centre either. Very nice work.
-
I love that :-*
Any chance of WIP photos?
Great to see this project continuing.
-
Thank you gents :)
Any chance of WIP photos?
I’m afraid not as I did it in one hit. I’ll do some wip photos of the next though :)
-
Splendid, just in time for tonight's game. ;)
-
Just about :D
-
Looking good, mate, especially for knocking it out so quickly.

The most explicit views of ladies' ankles this side of the channel, I suspect. Honest, guv'ner.
-
Cheers again fellas :)
Is that a window to the cellar? What nasty going on's is happening down there
Yeah, there is an intention to do subterranean boards as well but we’ll see what happens.
-
Very nice - and even better in real life.
-
Got another build underway and as promised here are some wip shots.
It’s a Chinese laundry and the signs, washing lines and tubs that will be added will help convey that.
The two Georgian facades are card and the other sides are styrene brick sheet. There will be a low pitched roof on top of the Georgian part and of course plenty of details to bring it up to the level of the others.
The ‘yard’ is separate and the tubs and washing lines will probably be separate also to allow it to be used for other purposes. It’ll have some simple wooden doors on it also.

Nice

Nice

With a cellar leading to catacombs containing unspeakable evil. :)
-
Thanks gents :)
Will it also be an opium den?
Don’t see why not but the only indication will be a very small puff of smoke out of one of the windows lol
-
With a cellar leading to catacombs containing unspeakable evil. :)
It could just lead to the sewers he's building?

It could just lead to the sewers he's building?

I’m not, not, not, not ;D
-
Who told you I was building sewers?
I didn't realise it was a secret you were buildings sewers?
-
This will certainly be interesting!
-
Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
This thread is quite inspiring! I love everything. :-*
-
Looking great mate.
Can’t wait to see what you do with the sewers, I heard you are going to have actual running water in them.
8)
-
I heard it was actual running rats!
Looking very nice and thanks for the Wips. May I ask, with regard to the card frontage, is it a single piece of card inscribed or separate card pieces for each ‘stone block’?
-
Cheers fellas :)
No running water, rats or anything as I’m not doing sewers ;D
May I ask, with regard to the card frontage, is it a single piece of card inscribed or separate card pieces for each ‘stone block’?
It’s a single piece with lasered score lines. I thought about doing it in styrene and scoring by hand but that would mean removing the burs and I had a bit of space left on the sheet of card so did it this way.
-
No running water, rats or anything as I’m not doing sewers ;D
What about drains? :D
-
Shush you ;D
-
What about drains?
Manhole covers lead to sewers. I think this is literally a slippery slope to getting some really nice resin sewers.
-

Thanks for that. I am contemplating creating a similar effect across some MDF buildings. Lacking the laser I might go for cut out card pieces from a computer design.
-
Started painting and got the bulk of it done. Still a fair amount to do though.

That sounds like a good idea and I’d probably do it that way myself if I didn’t have laser access.

Nice colouring in :)

Nice colouring in :)
Yeah, that's really taking shape.
-
It’s looking tantastic 8)

Thanks chaps :)

Looking good old chum. Those colours work.
I'd go for a cobblestone yard...
With drains.....
Which lead to sewers..... :)

Lovely work, the colour palette is very effective, particularly how the pallid skin works with the muted clothing colours.
-
Oh my!
-
Fantastic painting work. These figures are very nice, very dynamic.
-
I'm jealous of how you get the roof joins to be so perfect!
-
Nice job on that mini :-*
-
I really like the pale skin colour. :-*
Looks like he could have spent a long time in the sewers.
-
Thanks gents :)

Just practise and simple geometry :)

No, no, no, no, no, no sewers
-
Very nice Jim :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Nice one big chap! 8) The Chinese Laundry is superb! :-*
-
Thanks again fellas :)
Laundry is done. The horizontal strips of wood in the ‘yard’ will be strung with string for games to represent washing lines. I’ll probably do some clothes but not today. I felt this was a better option as the yard can still be used for other purposes.

The washing line sounds a bit fiddly?
"You won't be allowed to play in there if the washing is out on the line" I am sure that is what my mun used to say away!
-
That looks amazing, what a wonderful piece!
-
Top job, love it. ;D :-*
-
Top work on that :-*

Excellent. :-*
It’s only missing one thing.... employees :D

"You won't be allowed to play in there if the washing is out on the line" I am sure that is what my mun used to say away!
lol
It’ll be fine as it’ll stop people using the yard (I hope...)
-
Such talent, amazing build...you can almost smell the soap & stench of old London. Keep em coming.
-
That works well as a composition. I do really like the muted colours. Sheets on the line would finish off nicely, but as you say, they're not necessary to get the building on the table.
-
James, well done! :-*
-
That does look gorgeous and a washing line/s would be great.
However, just a small query, window sills?
-
Thank you :)
However, just a small query, window sills?
Ah, slight oversight on my part lol
-
See, I told you he was human! lol
-
Handsome. I’d add the washing lines personally (as well as the window sills;)) It will give the building more of a definite character. And maybe a broken down old giant washtub in the yard.
:)
-
.....And maybe a broken down old giant washtub in the yard.
:)
Agreed.
With the contaents of said tub flowing down a drain in the corner that leads directly to the sewers!
:D

Cheers again :)

My wife won't let me smoke in the house :D
Another civvie painted up but this one is for a specific scenario.
Miss Daisy Grossweiner, daughter of German immigrants Hans and Hulda :D

Shame about the horse shit, but... ;)
It’s all authentic ;D

A cracking job, mate.
:-*
I have the same figure painted in yellow.
It says 'Bibbles' on the bottom of her base, no idea why.....
;D
-
Ms. Grossweiner does look good in pink indeed. However I have met a rendition of her in a blue dress in my days. ;)
-
She is a treat.
-
Very nice! I love the dirt on the base too

Smoke looks the dogs, ta

Incredible buildings and great minis all though this thread.
All that table needs to really bring it all together are some sewers.
-
Excellent stuff. Brilliant boards and gobsmacking miniatures. Very very very well played indeed.
-
The laundry is absolutely great!
-
Belated thanks chaps :)
Project is going dormant for a few months, I've got other stuff to do.

Just thought I'd post my LPL round 1 entry here as I will be using them for games in the future. This version is a bit bigger than the LPL one.

Yeah, come on build something Slacket!
Who are Skacker and Slacket?
-
Ok, just for you ::)
A simple corner build done but it’ll need windows, doors and shutters when I get back (the blank areas above the sills are where the shutters will go). I might also do a brass railing for the stairs if I can get my soldering iron sorted. I think I’ll do a sign or two protruding from the walls as well and it’ll definitely have a couple of manky posters :)

I like that idea.
I can just see them now, reminding me of the Driscoll Brothers from Only Fools and Horses.
Ya know: One tall one and one short one...?

I can't seem to get Jacko's "Thriller "out of my head now! lol

Amazing buildings!

Cheers :)
Got a Brougham painted as a commission but seeing as its for Nick and it’ll be in our games I thought I might as well post it here :)
It’s a WestWind kit but not the easiest to assemble (holes missing and parts not quite fitting etc).

I love putting kits together. I'd be happy to do it for you if you think you can trust the post not to shake it apart again on it's way back to you.

Fantastic, well done for getting it done!

Cracking big chap! :-*

I admire your carriage sir :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)

Cheeky double post so this isn’t lost at the bottom of a page :)
Painted a Hackney carriage for me (there’s a commissioned Mariah to show tomorrow).
It’s a bit rushed in places as I just wanted it done and out the way.

Excellent- was it fun to assemble?
-
Very nice. Looks 'ansom Guv. :)
-
Thanks gents :)
Excellent- was it fun to assemble?
Not as bad as the four wheeled ones (the Mariah was a sod but more on that later). The only odd decision was sculpting passengers then filling in around them so they are obscured. I understand the thought behind it but a better choice would’ve been to have a separate little plug in maybe?
-
looks the business...superb
-
Oh My!
-
Ta :D
Black Mariah next. This one had a wonky bottom that needed filling and straightening and then the details along the sides adding again towards the bottom. It's done though and they will look good on the table top.

Nice bit of Victorian background stuff and extremely well painted. Good for objectives too.
-
Some lovely additions there, mate.
A cracking little 'fleet' of conveyances to populate your streets.
:-* :-*
Really need to start employing some street sweepers soon, though.....
-
Excellent - I need to get some transport for my rozzers!
-
So realistically painted! :-* :-* :-*
-
The Mariah has come out very well indeed. ;D
Time to think about investing in some more conveyances for the Great London Carriage Race 1890....! ;) lol
-
Time to think about investing in some more conveyances for the Great London Carriage Race 1890....! ;) lol
To which I immediately thought of a scene from a B&W old west movie, where settlers in a variety of contraptions are lined up for a race west to claim plots of land. I’ve no idea what the movie was called.
-
That looks excellent - I think I’ve just added it to the shopping list :P
-
All three of these carriages are absolutely lovely. :-*
Can we see some more photos of all three up against your Limehouse scenery, this one is excellent.

Thank you kindly gents :)

Like the one that didn’t happen last night? lol
Yep, the very same and we know why it didn't happen as well ;) lol

Nice coach! Great painting again

Not much time for personal projects at the moment but I’ve been able to start a customs house for the Thames.
It’ll have a projecting balcony that’ll sit on the retaining wall of the Thames but it’ll also be removable so the house itself can go elsewhere. I’ll put either a ladder down or a set of rickety steps down to a lower platform. Standard London stock for the bricks and I think a dirty white for the clapboard. Not entirely sure about the clapboard for this, I’d prefer something a tiny bit larger but we’ll see what it looks like when painted.
The roof details will go on after painting along with the balcony etc.
I’ve also painted some figures suitable for some sewer crawls. Foundry, Highgate and old Citadel.

Will it be ready for next weeks game though...? ???
-
Cracking! :-*
-
That’s very nice and evocative, certain I’ve walked past that in Southwark a few times.
-
Cheers again :)
I’ve managed to colour this in in my convalescence. There’s still the balcony thing to do but I need to get the thames out of the garage and that’s not happening for a while.

not to much damage I hope?

That’s a really interesting build :-* 8)

Thanks chaps :)
Sorry to hear about the thames
not to much damage I hope?
I’m not firing on all cylinders so my typing isn’t making much sense lol
I meant that the section of the Thames I built is in the garage and I’m not going to faff around getting it out until I feel better.
The custom house will sit on the edge of the retaining wall and will have a balcony/ladders etc for river access. It’ll be kept separate though so the building can be placed elsewhere.
-
Very nicely done. Is the chimney done or is it still going to get pots?
-
Beautiful work James :-* :-* :-*
-
Bloody lovely mate
:)
I meant that the section of the Thames I built is in the garage and I’m not going to faff around getting it out until I feel better.
That’s a relief...thought you meant the big watery thing, rather than the scale model.
Have been eyeing my local river somewhat nervously the last week or so
-
yes I Though the whole of england was sinking and I didn't where you stay
glad to hear your stuff is safe
-
Nice work, mate, especially on the colouring.
:-* :-*
For a sickly lad, you are certainly keeping the standard up, old bean.
;D
-
Thanks again :)
Very nicely done. Is the chimney done or is it still going to get pots?
Possibly. I haven’t drawn any for a stack this size but I might do.

Amazing as always! :-* :-* :-*

Cheers chaps :)
Game on Wednesday so I’ll take some ‘beauty’ shots of the carriages.

Superb work. Love the staining effects.

Thank you :)
Got a few little things done in between other stuff this week to help populate the table a bit. I’ll do some more of different sizes at some point.

The back yards are a bit wider than the standard house size but as quite a few are joined together it shouldn’t be a problem.
-
Nice work James. I particularly like the extensions 8)

A temperance hall, I'll drink to that!

Got a couple of additions to the project. A rather large wolf (were or otherwise) and the Spoon Lane Boxing ring. The ring was made form balsa, sprayed white and weathered appropriately and the wolf is from GW (he's huge lol)
I do need to paint a whole load more civvies though as it's looking a bit sparse at the moment lol

Thank you chaps :)
I'll try and set up a warehouse with it in later this evening.

My money is on the wolf. When it gets into that ring...
it is going the rip him to bits!

Nice work, mate.

Maybe some rats and a terrier or two for the ring would be good too.

Love the boxing ring and second Paul's idea of rats and terriers! :-*

Love, love. Love.

I may be able to help you with the terrier if you get stuck as I am pretty sure I have an English somewhere.
Would make a good 'Bullseye'.

Great photography Mr.B. :)

-
Hadn’t seen those miniatures before - lovely work, especially, as Lon said, the pugilist’s vest
8)
-
Excellent work! They're a cracking set if figures.
-
Very nice- that vampire lord’s a beautifully dramatic figure and the pugilist’s vest is very eye-catching (rather like his fists).
-
Lovely painting. :-* :-*
-
Cheers fellas :)
I think I’ll go a pluck up the courage to paint in the eyes although I don’t think I’ve got a brush suitable :?
-
Nice work on those minis James :)
-
Very nicely done 8)
-
Fantastic. The work on the figures (especially the vests) was so outstanding I didn't even notice the eyes. Given the wonderful stripes on the vest, the eyes will not be able to stop you. :)
-
Stellar brushwork!
-
Painting eyes at this skill is overrated. Great for display, not needed for gaming with when I'm standing 2 feet above them.
-
Thanks again chaps :)

Time for another gang to walk the streets of Limehouse. Going for Tong this time just to mix it up a bit.

Lovely painting on the Tong. An opium den sounds like a great plan!

Cheers all :)
How are you doing the bases?
Primer grey spray, inked with GW brown ink then given a drybrush of a slightly lighter grey. The horseshit et al is a couple of different fine flocks with some short cut bristles mixed in.
Still researching the Opium den so it’ll be a while yet :)

The boys from the Yú hé shǔ tiáo Tong are ready to rumble in the back alleys of Limehouse.

In a few days I’m going to host a little ‘play via text’ game. I don’t have the set up for a live remote game so this will (hopefully) be the next best thing.
There will be four gangs for this and they are being stated up by their players at the moment. I’ll be setting up the board in the next day or so then the action can begin :D
Teamwork has been suggested but it will not be frowned upon if ignored >:D

A few years back one of the local grocery megachains was actually selling a house-brand bacon marmalade.

Ooh, nice building additions, and a very nicely bird-pooped statue!
-
Thanks :)
The board is set, the teams are in place and the first turn has begun!
I'll be posting once each turn once it's over with a brief synopsis of what's happened. The first turn will be fairly dull as the team make their initial moves so I'll do turns one and two together. The players have had briefings and I'll post these for all to see once the game is over.
It will be a long haul as it's not live.
The table layout and initial player starting positions (can't do a 4x4 for a long term set up as I need the space lol)
And the teams set up and ready to go, giving a quick pose for the camera before setting forth :D

I have an embarrassing confession to make; I've lost the word document that had the game written on it :'(
Never fear though as another remote game will be happening in the very near future and it will be fully documented :)
In the meantime, I've finished off anther building base that has been languishing for months in a 3/4 state. It's been made from scraps from the catalogue and will sit on the table edge. I do intend to make another building that backs onto it but haven't decided what form it should take.

Yeah. The first one I did was a bit too bright so I knocked it back a bit.
