Dipping My Toe into Fallout Style Skirmish Gaming
« on: April 29, 2024, 08:18:28 PM »
Hi All,

After watching the Fallout series, I've gotten the radioactive bug for post-apocalyptic skirmish gaming.  However, I have to admit the offical game doesn't really appeal to me (I love beer and pretzel gaming, and it seems too fussy with all the needed stat cards and specialty dice). I already own Zona Alpha and will likley start with adapting that, but wanted to ping the collective brain trust and see what others recommend.  I've seen people discuss This is Not a Test, but wasn't sure if the core rulebook was enough to cover everything in Fallout (power armor, exotic weapons, robots, etc.) and if it worked well with solo play.  I also see a version 2 is in the works, so wasn't sure if I was better off waiting for that to be released.

In the meantime, I've picked up some 3D printed figures to start my warbands and populate my wasteland with mutated dangers.

More pics and discussion around them can be found on the blog if you're interested:

Thanks in advance for the advice!
Chris

Great looking warband, my favourite is the bear!

Zona Alfa has a great solo extension called Kontraband, but it is for teams of 4 experienced stalkers, so not a big gang. Great base for homegrown rules though. If you want a cool solo PA game, check out 5 Klicks from the Zone.

Fallout is such a great place to game, there is so much variation and interest to be had from world building and so many genres that are jammed in, and in game references to external sources you can easily bring in.

My own fallout world can push Sci fi desert world, Western, pulpy 50s.

I've gamed with pulp alley, Scavenge skirmish survive, and will give fist full of lead a go.

Have a look:

Yeah, this subforum used to be a hotbed for 28mm Fallout conversions and terrain (it's what drew me here in the first place), until Modiphius put out their licensed game.  I've collected a lot for that game, but the mini scale doesn't appeal much, and I had to construct my own card box to hold all the mini-Euro boardgame cards I've amassed.

I'm very interested in what other, simpler systems you find for solo play!  Do keep us all up to date.

Skank game/Warlords of the wastelands 2085 (https://www.skankgame.com/Downloads.html) is free and about as beer and pretzels as it gets. The rules are pretty open and flexible, although aimed more at "40k army"/platoon size. No rules for solo play, but you might be bale to retrofit some reaction tables/etc

I hadn't heard of skank games before - thanks for the lead!

I'll keep posting as I get more figures done and experiment with some rule sets.

Thanks!

I am with you -- I played the "official" game with its ridiculous special dice. I was definitely not impressed. I used Wiley Games Core Rules with the Wastelands Warfare supplement. My players typically bring 4 characters from their survivor gang of 7-8. I usually have six players in my games, though we had a smaller one last time with four.

Your minis look awesome! Look forward to hearing about your games once you've got everything ready to roll...

Mutants and Death Ray Guns by Ganesha Games are worth a look, it has a gonzo Gamma World aesthetic but can easily be reskinned.

I too have been quite enamoured with the TV show; I was always quite fascinated when my boys played it and they have bought me Fallout figures which I've painted a used a little.

I intend to look at it in more detail once my other campaigns are sorted but it's likely to be a very bastardised thing with lots of proxies from other games.

Lets' face it anything or anyone could be out there in those endless wastes.

Thanks All for the feedback and ideas! There are definitely a lot more rules options than I expected, so this may take a bit of time to investigate. Luckily I have a fair amount more to paint before I'm ready to start gaming.

I'll keep posting updates as the project develops.

I too have been quite enamoured with the TV show;

I was told about the TV series and put off watching it for a while.  I am quite taken by the idea and plan on using either Zona Alfa or my own version of Akula's Zombie Rules.  I have lots of figures that might do from our Delta Zone and Dedburgh games which should adapt quite easily.

Another warband off the table, along with a couple of predators to populate the wasteland.

Well done, they look suitably vicious! Not sure about the lady’s odds in that last picture, though… there are predators and then there are apex predators.
