I chose 6mm A4 sheet and 12mm rod for my Floatel, but it's quite big and weighty.

SI YOU probably don't need this advice but just in case. When I've drilled perspex in the past, the drill sticks quite easily and can whip the sheet round if it's not jigged well, I was only doing small stuff 1" strips and just hand held it in my usual lazy way and it came as a bit of a shock when I nearly took my fingers off

It also cracks quite easily if thin sections but I've used 5 mm thick and it's bullet proof.

That sounds potentially nasty and so thanks for the tip. All being well though I shan't need to drill the acrylic for mine as the base wil be a lump of lead!

Can I suggest you put your drill on a lower torque setting? That way if it sticks, it won't take your hand off, just make the drill click! And when you drill it out work your way up to the final drill size. Start small.
