Title: The Dark Gathers - The Barrow-Guard of King Taranis, p.14
Post by: Knight-Captain Tyr on 01 December 2018, 04:43:43 PM
A sister thread to my Black Order log, this is to record the progress of my Undead army for Kings of War, KoW: Vanguard, and anything else I try my hand at - maybe even SAGA if they do a fantasy versoin?

Let's start with an introduction to the ancient kingdom of Modgud, now long since passed into oblivion...

Thanks all - very much appreciated. The skeletons are a mix of Wihtgar and Wihtax from Mierce Miniatures' Jutes range.

YES EXCEEDINGLY. Your twin threads have so much narrative to them, your penmanship is excellent. Lovely painting, reminds me once again of uneasily playing Myth.

I think the official fantasy version of SAGA 2nd Ed. is just around the corner - in the meantime (if you own 1st Ed.), you could have a go at A Fantastic SAGA (fan-made and free):

Cheers Hupp - very glad you like them :) I have a bunch more on the table to paint now...

All this is fantastic.  Love the bear.  Think I saw him on a popular TV series recently.

Haha yes. I did wonder if I should do him as a polar bear but figured a grizzly would fit the tone of the force better. Couldn't resist painting its remaining eye as a GoT homage.

Thanks Ragsta! I tried hard to make the two forces feel like they're from the same world so am glad you appreciate them. Myth has been a huge inspiration, as always :)

Well, been a while since I've had time to post pictures - rest assured the shadow of the Dark has grown ever longer, and its servants are more numerous by the week... Myrdred is one of the most powerful (known) servants of the Dark and bears much of the responsibility for bringing down the old kingdom of Modgud and enthralling the last of its kings. Without further ado:

Bleak is good too! :) Cheers man. I'm hoping to refine the tone a bit in future. I do want it to be bleak, but to have a distinction between the Dark - which is monolithic and unthinking - and the living races in the world, which are merely imperfect.

All your BEAUTIFULLY painted & based creations work wonderfully together to create a dark & forbidding world. VERY WELL DONE!

Cheers - I think I got away with using the Forgeworld transfers on them...

Love the flowing robes on your Wights!

Cheers! I think I could go back and blend the highlights more (and maybe push them a bit further at the same time). But they're OK for gaming for now.

And now, finally, the Last King of Modgud himself, Taranis the Deceived, first to serve the Dark in this age:

Well, I have to say I've been lax in keeping this thread updated alongside its sister thread, The Black Order. Time to slowly start to rectify that...

I've been having some fun with kitbashes and conversions lately, trying to go for a slightly more characterful look than out-of-the-box Mantic or Fireforge undead. I came up with the idea that the Black Order would regularly have to fight incursions of the Dark from recently fallen towns, cities and their garrisons now resurrected in unlife to do the Dark's bidding. So I've started with a city militia garrison recently raised to unlife:

It's been a hell of a long time since I've updated this log. Spending two months away from my paint station didn't help matters I must admit...

Painted up a test model for the Erain Tor garrison. Pretty pleased with how he came out, feels very similar to the old Thrall from Myth: The Fallen Lords. Contrast paints made blocking in colours and shades a real breeze.

@Munindk - they're actually a bit shorter than the Mierce skeletons. Not enough to notice at tabletop distance, but they are noticeably taller. Mixed in the same unit might look weird.

Thanks a bunch gents. So glad to be back in the (painting) saddle!

I've sorted out the next additions to the Dark. I've also sorted out an army name...more on that in the next post! For now, here's what I'm adding to make it a viable Kings of War force. There's a strong Western European/Celtic theme running through the force, particularly in the case of the Mierce stuff, which I'd like to continue.

Firstly, twelve more lost souls for the Erain Tor garrison:

Beasts fell and unnatural heralding the advance of the Dark:

Yeah that's what I figured too - something Fetch-like, something Shade-like too (thinking Phelot in Myth II).

Dracula's America had an incredible miniature below that would be PERFECT for a Fetch, but it seems to be totally out of circulation :(

Close! It's from Mierce Miniatures - specifically their 'Banbreca' model. Here he is, base isn't quite finished yet...

In Ripping Yarns, Michael Palin as the eponymous hero in 'Tompkin's School days' is building something in metalwork.
'What's that Tomkins?' asks the teacher. 'A model of an Ice-breaker sir' he replies. 'What scale?' 'One to one sir'
'It's NOT a model then! Get it out of the classroom'

Completed this chap over the weekend - thinking is that it's an animated suit of armour, a shell inhabited by the dreaming spirit of a sorcerer, something a bit like the Fetch from Norse mythology.

Not quite sure! I know they were on sale from Northstar - either the Frostgrave or Dracula's America range? Think the latter.

Thanks mate! Yeah, it is a shame they're not more widely used - but at those prices I guess it's not surprising haha.

For a while I've wanted to do a whole Undead unit themed around dead men raised from a mass grave, weapons and armour rusted and nature gradually reclaiming the makeshift burial ground. This is the beginning of that unit. Have to say I'm really pleased with the Oathmark skeletons kit, although I swapped out the skulls. Another 25 to go!

Those are excellent looking undead units, they've got  a lot  of atmosphere, reminiscent of Ana Polanšćak's stuff, great work on them.
Not sure about the lichen but I get what you're going for. I'm guessing you've seen this thread by Niklas P, I think he uses flock or static grass to get a mossy effect which gives the same idea: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=113078.225 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=113078.225)

I've been sorely tempted by Mierce's undead a number of times, but the fact the that the guy behind them is a known shyster has always put me off.

You can catch a glimpse of the story here if you can be bothered:http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?51492 (http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?51492), but basically from what I understand, the guy folded Maelstrom games, burning lots of customers, and put all the resources into Mierce.

Now, they make some lovely minis, but to my mind buying from them is condoning this behaviour.

That's my opinion, and I feel the same way about Prodos/Archeon or whatever they're trading under nowadays, but all said and done, it's a pleasure to see the minis presented to this standard. So thanks for posting them, and sorry for the minor thread derail.

I'm afraid I've heard a lot of this in the years since purchasing my Mierce undead. I've heard rather too many examples of customers being kept waiting (one poster on Dakka claims to have been kept waiting for 4!! years...) to dismiss. I haven't bought anything large from them recently but it does make me question if I ever want to again, I'm afraid :(

As noted in the Black Order thread, I've been making Oathmark unit cards - I just wanted an excuse to mess around with more flavour texts :)

Spot the obvious Myth reference, haha.

One question about the twigs/branches on them - if they’re made using lichen, how do you keep it from becoming brittle and breaking? I’ve never been able to get lichen to last.

So...I've been remiss in updating this thread. I've had a long, long absence from painting anything (over a month, which is unusual for me) and am slowly getting back into it.

Oathmark is now quickly becoming my primary games system. I've had a few games with the Black Order (humans) and the Dark (undead) and the playstyles are distinct enough that it's a game I'll be happy to keep playing for a while.

I've found that the Undead are surprisingly expensive (well...if you go with the revenant options at least). I've put together a Light Catapult to serve in the Dark's arsenal. I'm 50/50 on this; it was a 'rescue project' on an MDF catapult, and some Wargames Atlantic bits, and while I think it'll do as a gaming piece it's not at the same standard as the rest of the force.

Without further ado, the Corpse-Rotted Onager:

My take on the Oathmark Revenant Champion. I wanted him to have a bit more heft, both in terms of his physical stature and the threat he projects on the battlefield. So, when in doubt, stick a bigger fur pelt on him and give him an axe upgrade:

Cheers! They're actually from the GW skulls kit. I love the Oathmark skeletons, but the skulls are where the kit didn't work for me - slightly too stylised and cartoony, like an animated film. Works for some themes but I wanted something a bit more grim and stark, so went with the GW set.

Starting to pick up a bit more steam on the Undead front now. Saga's such a great ruleset for dipping in and out of various forces - and also quite dangerous for the bank account for the same reason :)

I rebased and retouched the Mierce Barrow Spider from years ago. Really love this model. I actually have a second lying around - must paint it up, although I realise I didn't write down the recipe for this one!

Shelob's eyeballs, that's an awesome paintjob!

I've got an entire spider force in the works, with a spider hag, little ones and bigger ones, but this big boy/girl would be an awesome addition to the roster!

Thanks chaps!

Next up - as you all know by now I was enormously inspired by a series of video games called Myth as a child. To this day I still play them. They're dark, gritty, brutal and highly unforgiving of mistakes, featuring a beleaguered human kingdom, defended by a military arm called the Legion, against an overwhelming, implacable horde of undead and other fouler things called the Dark. No guesses for where the title of this thread comes from ;)

I've recently finished four Undead warriors heavily inspired by (cough: direct copy from) the Myrmidons in Myth: The Fallen Lords. These guys were a blast to convert. I had to get the gridaksma blades they wield 3D modelled and printed by a friend, and for the painting, I used Ana Polansčak's tutorial on mummified skin from her Gardens of Hecate blog, but I'm not convinced I know how to use crackle paint properly (no problem of Ana's - the tutorial is brilliant, and I recommend it).

What do you guys think? Faithful to the inspiration?

I do not know the source material, but going by the drawing you shared, your conversions look to be pretty spot on!  8)

Great work, on a bunch of really scary undead...

After a very long hiatus from this project it's now back in my crosshairs as the no.1 priority - I want to complete my Undead force for SAGA: Age of Magic, and so to that end I'm breaking out old and new minis.

First up are some reinforcements for the Myrmidons and Thrall on the last couple pages:

So, as I'm repurposing things for Age of Magic, I took the opportunity to revisit some old Mierce completions. Namely these archers from Mierce's Jutes range. They were getting a bit chipped around and generally lacking some finer detail, so I've gone back over them, improved the contrast and highlights where I can, added some weathering powders and rebased the lot of them. Quite pleased with the end result.

A twelve-strong block of Undead archers in Saga will be quite useful - not least because as Warriors they also pack a punch in melee.

Those archers are ace! Lovely paintjob too; the colours work really well together.

I've been planning to add a unit of archers to my undead horde for quite some time, but finding the right ones to fit in has been sort of difficult. Since most of my skellies are Mantic ones (hey; I like 'em  :D ), I originally went with their archer add ons, but for some reason archers wearing (the remains of) plate armour and sallets just didn't sit right with me.

But these look perfect for the job! Cheers for pointing me in the right direction  :)

Thanks, guys.

Another completion (well, re-completion - retouching and rebasing) - twelve more undead wights to serve as warriors in Saga. I'm also having a terrain redux at the minute, so expect to see some more terrain from me in the future.

Those look phenomenal! I especially like the variety in how they are equipped- it fits my picture of units of reanimated dead forming from what the necromancer has available from defeated units. There is still some consistency due to the unit being raised from the same army, too. Brilliant!
