Im a big fan of Perry Miniatures, as Im sure most of us here are. After assembling several boxes of the War of the Roses, I realized how many spare hands, heads and bits are left over. I could literally make another army if I had some more bodies. One solution would be just to order some more Perry boxes, but then I would be left with even more bits. One could propose to make some resin copies of the Perrys' sculpts but it didnt sit well with me. But what if I was sculpting some original bodies by myself?
I have to say that I really enjoy making these. Once you make sure that the arm and head sockets are right to ensure compatibility with the Perry plastics, they are quite easy to make and a great exercise in sculpting too. The material is Beesputty polymer clay over a copper wire armature. I have three variants ready by now, but Im working on 2 more.
Since the Perry bros covered most of the shinning armor options, I focused more on rank and file/mercenary types. Eventually I will sculpt my own heads and hands too, probably all the pike formation attacking variants, since the plastics provide only options for pikes at rest/attention.

Wowee, they look fantastic!!
Are you the chap who sculpted some rather excellent Spartans?
So of course the big question is - are you planning to have these cast up and sold, and when will you take our money?!

If you mean these, then yes :)

I will cast them for sure (because I need them too lol) and I would be happy to take your money :). In fact If you have any suggestions for bodies wearing a specific armor kit, I would seriously take them into consideration. I was also thinking of doing 2-3 minis wearing those fancy a la Romana armors. I did a first attempt some time ago (literally my first sculpt) but I believe I can do better now.

Brilliant! I'd buy these if they were available. Excellent work!
-
Those are great!
You are right the Perry kits provide so many spare arms and heads, being able to add some more bodies would be great, and some different body options is even better!

Rather well done. I started fallowing your work because of the fantasy romen you made for famous by my sword.
If your takeing suggestions, I will put out the idea of 15th century Turks, and 15th Byzantine/Greeks. :D
I've been reading some of the Thomas Snow series and and am haveing a hard time finding forces that cover that era for both of those forces.

Actually the idea of a Roman band of mercenaries adventuring in Europe, after the fall of the City is an idea that dances around my head for a long time. I know that Thomas of Argos and his band are part of the Henry VIII's campaigns, but its fairly possible that some would be around earlier.
-
Kind of a last of the Romans project. :D

15th century Turks, and 15th Byzantine/Greeks. :D
15th Century Ottomans and Byzantines would be a dream come true- no one does them at all.

Agreed, would be pretty cool.. Perry's need to stop making Napoleonic Andorra dragoons and do this.

Hilarious.
But true.
Alan p has an obscure Napoleonic obsession
It’s a shame - they could produce so much more marketable stuff.
But they are happy doing the things they want to do, and who can blame them? :)
-
Oh I jest, it's his passion project and he can enjoy it to his hearts content. Just doesn't do much for me. :D
-
Very nice, would be interested if the WoR figures become available for sale.
-
These look great! It would be useful to have more "common" body types for Swiss, Shire Levy, Peasant Revolts etc.
-
What a great idea! I really love what you’re doing here.
+1 to getting them cast and making them available!

Wow, those look fantastic - great sculpting and I've sent you a PM.

Time for some new entries. 2 new bodies. One with fabric padded armour and one with a surcoat over the cuirass.

Love them, and can't wait to see more. I know I am interested in picking a few up at some point.

I envy you "total artists", capable of painting and sculpting wonderfully. The sculpting is magnificent and having the ability to add a variety of poses to existing ones is always great news. I will follow the progress with great interest.

Thank you.
Generally if you can draw you can sculpt and vice versa. Personally I dont believe in talent. Its just about putting the hours in and I have to put many many more. I consider myself a novice.

These look absolutely fabulous Captain Harlock, would love to buy these if they become available, will watch this with interest.
I remember you did a Burgundian tunic over armour a few years back which was also amazing would you make that available too?
I consider myself a novice.
Your scuplting is masterful i was looking at your Greeks and they are superb too, you are up there with the best scuplting ive ever seen

Thank you so much for your kind words. I intend to sculpt maybe 3 or 4 full minis, not just bodies, in fancy Romanesque armour and tunic on with the sleeves hanging back etc

That is pretty cool, I think I would also be down for some of them as well. So how many bodies of that design do you think you will be making?
-

The Romanesque ones will be complete minis because the armor design is incomplete without the same style arms, and the Perrys don’t have something similar in their plastic ranges.
As for the bodies I really don’t know how many I’m going to make finally, really depends on the inspiration. Right now there are 5 different designs. I’m focused on rank and file units and a bit better armed mercenary types. I don’t think that there is any value of doing full harnesses since the Perrys pretty much covered those.
-
your sculpts are absolutly amazing!
how or where did you learned to sculpt folds on fabric that well?
something i completly lack at.

I think it all comes from drawing. Im a graphic designer and I also like to draw and paint among other stuff. Basically the way Im dealing with it is understanding how the forms of the subject work, and then break them apart in my mind into simple basic shapes that are ''assembled'' and finetuned.
-
More beauties!

Cool, will they have a mostly a leadership, close combat or range weapons focus?
Might I also suggest a few cavalry as well. For I guess light or medium cavalry.

I was thinking of polearms/swords mainly. I mean look at those posh boys, they would probably be afraid of dinging their fancy armor lol
http://www.pixures.be/web2012bexbach/pages/bxb120994.htm
As for the ''general use'' bodies, Im really open to suggestions if they are coming in a pictorial format even better. Also if there is a certain pose that you believe that is missing from the Perry boxes but would be very useful. Im trying to avoid already existing designs in the plastic boxes, because my aim is for more variety and to be honest the Perry bros really covered many bases.
When it comes to cavalry I think that there might be some space for different poses while riding instead of the sitting straight ones in the boxes. But we will see.
-
Will try and find some photos but got lots of ideas especially from all the Swiss chronicles.
How about a crouching one or even prone. a crouching one would be so useful for seiges and ambushes or even running g/charging with handgun/crossbow
Can imagine medeival skirmishes with ranged weapons might of been not so different to today's skirmishes
-
Yeah, they are pretty fancy. But i thought that was the Burgundian thing, looking good and fighting good. that is at least until the trees start speaking Swiss. lol
Hmm maybe two sets, one kind of at ease or marching. And one the other actually getting aggressive and advancing or getting ready to receive a charge or attack would be cool. (Before they are literary stuck by spears, crossbows and pikes)
I also think a set like the Perry Italian sword and shield men, only in Burgundian/renaissance Romanisqe armor would look pretty damn cool as well.
Other ideas, maybe a few camp, or noncombatant vignettes?
And one thing I just want and can't seem to find, a head set with bellows face sallet helmets. I am doing an early Henry the 8th army using steel fist dollies and trying to convert over some of the perry plastics and would love too more than a few. And my press molded helmets are ok, just not the best quality. ::)
-
Heck the Alla Antica style could be used as Fantasy late medieval romans as well.
Like for the not Roaman faction in games like made "famous by my sword". That you already made a guy for. ;D
Of course, now i am thinking of archers, cavalry, crossbowmen and hand gunners. lol
Or maybe just use them as the leaders and bodyguards of commanders and use the rest of the perry medieval line for the rank and file. ::)
But they do strike a very heroic style and look. Even if not the most functional on the battlefield.
Like I wonder how historically accurate this bloke on the cover of the Medieval warfare magazine special "Fall of Constantinople", is.
https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/en-us/products/mw-special-1
Looks good ether way you slice it.

I really like that style of armor. It just hits my Greco-Roman soft spot. Unfortunatelly there are not any remains that I know off of a similar armour from Constantinople. But in my mind its very plausible. By the time of the fall most of the Roman (they never called themselves Byzantine) armor making centers have collapse. It is expected that most of the nobles and men at arms would wear armour made in Italy not a clibanion lamelar armor. But I believe that at least the richer ones would not resist to add some ''classical'' elements to their custom armour. They really believed that they were the inheritors of Greece and Rome. They talked about it casually in a way that might seem strange to people today considering the centuries past. Ι mean even at the very last moment, Constantine IX in his last speech at the eve of the final stage of the siege, addressing the nobles, soldiers and people of the City, casually added references to the Carthaginian Wars and called his people offsprings of the Greeks and the Romans.
The full speech is here as recorded by Georgios Sfrantzes, the emperor's best friend and official. Pure real Gondor moments
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csxvE8hdu24
-
That is a pretty impressive speech. And yeah, Rome in the east lasted 1000 years after the fall of the Empire of the west. And more Hellenic than Latin in lots of ways. Just not in clibanion lamelar in the end. lol
Yeah, i have seen some interesting takes on later forces of Constantinople. Some looking like Italians, some having a very middle eastern look and others so where in-between. Not forgetting the Heroic takes depicting them in a Rennaissance view of what a Roman should look like.
Now Of course, i do want to do forces for HYW, WOTR and Early Tudor.
But a part of me was always interested in the Fall of the Eastern Empire. And it always feels strange to me when folks are playing "late' Byzantine forces in 800-900 ad kit. I am like dude, there has been 500 years of change in fashion by that point. :D
And I guess that's one reason why I was taken in by the Neo-Roman look, its feels old, and might not have every been used. But still has a bit of functionality to it and would make for a great fantasy none GWs or Peter Jacksons film look for the forces of Gondor.
Still glorious, wealthy and martial in appearance. But does the look match their action on the field of battle? ;)
So I am looking forward to seeing a what you make of them. If nothing else, they will make for some good-looking bodyguards/leaders of a unit. Or as standalone paladins in a skirmish game.
Oh and this is interesting.

Oh good!

Absolutely FANYTASTIC! I would love to see these in production! I would love to add them to my Perry units! Bravo!
-
Great work, looks amazing. As for recommendations, I always feel we could use more heavily fluted and detailed gothic armor with its sharp angles and edges. For poses, perhaps a classic GW "one foot standing on a rock" pose. Could be useful for leader models. Flat faced owl type sallets are also uncommon in other kits.

oh that would be cool, I am a fan of the bellows faced sallet myself. But had not heard of the owl faces one before. It looks pretty cool. I think steelfist has a figure with that style of helmet, but in a attack pose.

Yes, please tell us the one and only question and dont torture us anymore :D When do you going to cast and sell them?
-
These look fantastic! Sign me up as well to order some when you cast them.
If you're looking to sculpt more alternative options to go with Perry kits, I have two requests for bodies I've always found lacking:
1) A simple belted hauberk with unarmoured legs of the style frequently seen in central Europe, especially among the Swiss:
2) A brigandine with mail skirt, preferably dagged, of the style common in the Iberian peninsula, either with armoured or unarmoured legs, or both:
Sculpting and casting a few of these style would make it immeasurably easier to produce accurate Swiss and Iberian infantry using the Perry kits!
-
Really good sculpting!
-
That is some very nifty putty work!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Ah man, a few sets of these would surely extend the mileage of my medieval plastic mountain even further. lol Results so far are absolutely excellent, great sculpting! :-*
-
I started 3 full minis in fancy Romanesque armours, they are still in the ''naked stage'' as I call it. Usually I making the broad strokes of a naked body and then ''dress it up''. Thats my way of remaining consistent and avoiding anatomical accidents lol
Here are 2 pics of the 7 bodies so far
(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a6/f2/e2/a6f2e22269a05cf07ecc2afeee4db767.jpg)
I will add one in hauberk and I like the idea of some bringandine combo. The only issue are those bloody rivets lol
-
They look great all together!
If you're still thinking about doing more and open to having random suggestions thrown at you, I'd love to see....
- A fully armoured man-at-arms in a tabard, in a walking pose. So armoured legs with covered torso (a tabard as opposed to a coat or jacket). The two like this in the Perry plastic sets are both in stationary poses, I want one advancing!
- A pose suitable for a well-equipped archer. Some combination of brigandine, mail, or jack, with perhaps plackart or livery jacket over the top, with EITHER armoured legs or riding boots, in a suitably realistic shooting posture.
You really should check out the latest book in Tobias Capwell's series which Simon linked earlier. I've just finished reading it, and it's been really eye-opening. Made me understand different forms of European armour more than just the classic 'Milanese' and 'Gothic' styles we all know. It covers European armour in England, particularly Italianate and Western European forms (he makes the point that there is no real evidence of German styled armour in England during this period). These can be roughly categorised as:
- Italian 'heavy cavalry' armour (the familiar Milanese style optimised for mounted combat).
- Italian export armour (more 'budget' armour, roughly Italian in appearance but adapted for Western European and English tastes, so better suited for foot combat and a little bit more fluting).
- The 'Western European Fluted Style' (quite unique and ornate, could be confused with either English or German, but seems to have been more of a French or Burgundian style).
- Flemish (Italian in appearance with smooth clean surfaces, but with differences, notably one-piece breastplates).
Point is, if you take a look in that book, you'll get plenty of inspiration should you want to try out some more fully-armoured figures in the future ; )
-
You really should check out the latest book in Tobias Capwell's series which Simon linked earlier.
Point is, if you take a look in that book, you'll get plenty of inspiration should you want to try out some more fully-armoured figures in the future ; )
i can only agree. all 3 books but particully the last of them are phenomenal. all the details and "little" things you learn is great value for sculpting.
it also gives a impression on how these people were thinking about armorstyles.
-
All 7 look great. looking forward to seeing the Roman Romanesque figs as well.
-
They look fabulous. Looking forward to getting some Perry heads and arms on them in the future!
Have you decided on how you’re going to produce them? :)
-
Beautiful sculpts!
-
Fantastic! I'd love to get my hands on these!
-
Great idea, and fantastic sculpts!
I'll add my name to the list of people who would like to get their hands on them. :)

Any new updates? ;)

Hurrah, more bodies! The one with plate armour and livery coat looks particularly useful.
Do you think you will sell these without the arms and heads first, or wait until they are done as well before releasing them?
-
What a treat! They all look fantastic, I especially like the hauberk lad.
-
Those are terrific; I'd certainly buy a bunch of them if they became commercially available.

Hey Charlie
Yes those are intended to be sold as they are. I made them specifically to be combined with Perry bits that we all have by the loads. At a later stage they could become full fledged minis offcourse. I’m making the 10th right now.
-
really looking forward to get them. will they be casted in metal?
-

I dont know the material yet but they would be casted for sure lol

For our tenth entry, we got Gothic Metal. This concludes this set but I have to admit that Im really addicted into making these so expect some more at some point. Right now the program includes romanesque Burgundians (and a few commissions).

Most excellent. :D
-
Fantastic job, I think some of these, dare I say it,eclipse the Perry sculpts! I could certainly do with about sixty if these to complete my Tewksbury forced and maybe another sixty or so for my Italian Wars Army.
-
Right, looking forward to getting a few. And looking forward to seeing the neo-roman mins once they are done as well. :D
-
Awesome!
One thing about the latest gothic armour though.... his crotch looks a bit unprotected? No tassets or mail skirt? What about a sword belt?
The sculpting is top quality regardless! :)
-
These are absolutely incredible sculpts! Really impressed with the Gothic Armour there!

That was my reaction too when I saw some museum pieces, but then I saw pics of re enactors having the same kit and I was convinced that it must have been a thing and I kinda wanted these to be odd ones in general.
Maybe I should add a sword belt

It's true you do often see them 'unprotected crotches'! Not all armour covered 100% of the body, and certain pieces could be left off for practical reasons (or perhaps they were in a hurry to get suited up!) so it'll work just fine as is :)
I got a small commission to complete and they are right next ;)
Ooh, would that also be something 15th century by any chance?

15th century indeed ;)
Btw the cool thing with these bodies is that I can have a resin copy and then modify it a bit with green stuff and end up with a variation like extra armor or a surcoat over it, ending up with an other master sculpt for casting

I have no idea really about how minis are produced! What happens next?

Well it depends by the material. Since plastic is out of the question due to the staggering starting costs, the options are metal or resin. I’m familiar with the resin process so I can talk about that.
First you have to make a silicone mold of the masters. There are two kinds of molds. Two part molds where the mold splits in half and Cut Molds where the mold is one piece and you carefully cut up to the necessary point, in order to release the mini by pulling it out. The pro of cut molds are reduced mold lines. For example in these bodies you only have to cut up to the crotch of the mini, the rest can be pulled out to be free from the mold, thus no upper body mold lines at all.
Each silicone mold gives about 35 reproductions and then it burns out due to the exothermic reaction of the resin, resulting to silicone becoming brittle and losing its non adhesive properties. So it has to be redone.
The molds are filled with polyurethane resin which is in the form of A+B chemicals.

You can then give those resin models to a (metal) miniature manufacturer who will make a master mould of them, in low temperature silicone and subsequently cast metal "masters", these are then put into a production mould and metal miniatures can be produced which will allow a substantial number to be produced.
ATB John :)

Interesting, you should post some step-by-step pics of the process when you do it!

I do have some on other projects on my instagram. I need to set up a camera rig of sorts at some point because usually when Im doing it my hands are full and working against a ticking clock. Its also very easy to make a mess around you if you are not focused. Ask me how I know lol
But yes its something I would be interested in doing, I do believe into sharing the info. There is not much accessible info about casting and mold making out there, at least focusing on extra small pieces like the ones we are dealing with. Or should I say, there are many fragmented info out there and in the end remains the good old trial and error method.

What about 3d scanning and then printing?
-
What about 3d scanning and then printing?
actually that requires alot of clean up and possible/probable softening or even loss of detail
-
Just want to say that these look fantastic, and I'll happily buy some copies once you make them! Very pleased to see the regular old hauberk in there.
-
I would really love to own these!

This is a small parenthesis. Im posting it here because its thematically related to the set of 10 bodies.
I was commissioned to do 4 bodies of Guardes Eccossais. These are already off to a casting service to be produced in resin for the customer. He kindly allowed me to make them available commercially, so that other people can enjoy them too. From my part I think that its only right to hold these 4 back abit and make them available further in the future, so that he can be the first who has them.

Part of the same commission was the conversion of a Perry head in order to represent Arthur de Richemont
(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f0/ea/7e/f0ea7e0afbb1e6006b54728166d1966c.jpg)
A fury fancy hat was made from Green Stuff and a French Marshal's baton with a tiny fleur de lis was made with procreate (that was what I had closer at the moment lol). The hand with the baton was made to fit the Perry mounted men at arms, hand socket. The client will glue it to the already prepared plastic body. I just put him together with abit of blue tack for display reasons.

I have been following this project on Instagram and can't wait for them to be available 😍

Some very nice sculpting there!
Steve

beautiful.
Where and when will they be available? will they be together with the other compatible bodies?
-
Looking great - sign me up for a set later on! :-*
-
Masterful conversion work!
-
Lovely, I'll be getting some of those, too, when available.
-
I am responsible for commissioning the torso for the Garde Écossaise. I also plan to use them for Breton Garde Ducale in their natty livery of black, white, and violet. And because Yannis is so talented and great to work with, I have commissioned additional torsos in kneeling and bending-over poses for crossbowmen, and more advancing torsos wearing livery jackets for greater variety in late 15th century armies, particularly French and Burgundian ordonnance. I am not sure when these will all be available, but it has rekindled my excitement for this period.
-
kneeling and bending over? that will open so many possibilities you are both legends Thank you =)

Masterful!

These are outrageously good, there are so many uses for these we will be spoiled :)

Im in the very happy position to announce that the 12 alternative bodies for Perry War of the Roses minis, will be part of the Steelfist Miniatures line and they will produced in metal. I think that they could not find a better home. Steelfist already has a top quality 15th century(and not only that) range compatible with Perry minis and I think all of us here appreciate Simon's personal modelling work and his expertise on the period.
Im currently producing resin masters to send over to Steelfist. Simon will keep you updated about the production schedule for these.
I have to make clear that the sculpts commissioned by Fantasticlegions are not included in this deal. He was extremely kind to allow his commissioned sculpts to become available, but as I said before that will happen in the near future, as its only fair to give him the time to enjoy them first. When the time comes we will see how these will become available.
I will continue updating this thread with any new entries. I have to say that Im very excited about all this.
-
That will be interesting wasn't expecting that was how they were going to be available hopefully it will not be too long for the casting as they are lovely sculpts
-
Congrats, to you and to Simon at Steel Fist 8)
I'm looking forward to buying a set or three :D
-
That is super news Congratulations Captain Harlock. It is funny i had saved some money up for the upcoming Steelfist Swiss and was going to split that to get yours as well when they became available but now they will be in the same place :D
-
Congratulations! That said it was cheaper for us Europeans to get them from Greece than getting them from the UK. ;)
-
Excellent news. For both the 12 and the Guard.
-
You really should be excited! I am too and they are not my sculpts. I have already planned how to use them!
-
That's very good news- I'll certainly order some of them!
-
Hello
Just to say - in my capacity as Steel Fist’s owner - how pleased and excited I am to make these in metals.
Yannis is a very talented sculptor and I hope that these help extend the use of the Perry plastics to get new poses etc.
I’ll keep this post updated on casting times - they are next on the list and I’m in the hands of my supplier,
Thanks
Simon
-
awesome, cant wait to get my hands on them! ;D
-
How are the Alla Romana/Burgundian armor coming along?
-
How are the Alla Romana/Burgundian armor coming along?
I started working on them but they will take the back seat for a couple of weeks, because I have some commission work to complete first.
-
Cool, and understand. Paid work does take priority. lol
Just seeing if it was still in the works. :D
-
Ok some long overdue update
First things first, the 12 bodies that will be available from Steel Fist Miniatures are already shipped. Here are some pics of the resin masters I did. I have posted as much of the process as I could (its a quite hands on process with limited time windows due to the materials) on my instagram https://www.instagram.com/talos.miniatures/

Now whats on the bench....
Well as you already know @Fantasticlegions commisioned more Perry compatible bodies. And when I say more i mean MOAR!!!!!! lol
Its going to be a full dozen of bodies in kneeling, bending and advancing poses, all in livery jackets.
I think that the way things go, it will be possible to field units with all unique mini designs in them ;D
-
Oh my, it keeps getting better!
So excited to see these produced by Steel Fist, and REALLY keen to see what you do with this new batch.
-
Again love them and looking forward to seeing more of your work.
-
Oh my, it keeps getting better!

I thought you would like them since we have the same projects. No self-respecting Frenchman would not wear a snazzy livery jacket with the Cross of St. Denis.

I'm really looking forward to getting these bodies! Variety is the spice of life and these look very spicey! Did I miss the timeline for their release?
-
Oh! These are looking incredible, can't wait for the full release!

The dirty dozen commissioned by @Fantasticlegions is done and soon will be off to the casting service.

hello beautiful poses.
But will these also be available in the steel fist miniatures range or will they have to be ordered in other ways?
-
When will these be available from Steelfist miniatures?
-
Hello
Just to update on the Steel Fist castings.
The sculpts have been at the mouldmakers for a short while now - I am in their hands on when these get done.
I will have a good amount of castings from the master mould, which I'll add to the website as soon as I have them.
I'm hoping that this could be in the next week and I'll pop an update on here as soon as they are in the online shop.
many thanks
Simon.

Im happy to announce that more of my Perry compatible bodies will be available in metal by Steel Fist miniatures.
We are talking about the 6 bending/kneeling poses of the 12 bodies bodies commissioned by FantasticLegions.
The masters are already on their way to their new home.
Im sure that Simon (Painterman) will be able to give you more details on their production time schedule.

Thanks Simon. Yes they will be open handed in order to receive Perry spare weapons :)

Well they do look promising!!

This is the basic volumes stage. It ensures that there wont be any anatomical hiccups showing up in the later stages. The minis start their life naked and in sense they are slowly dressed up.

Here we go for the final versions. First a snapshot of weapons and accessories. These are done in plasticard and green stuff. Im including some pics of the process for anyone who is interested. The pole arm shafts are optimized to fit the Perry miniatures and similar ranges.
Basically I take a piece of plasticard, rough out the scabbard shape (the same way you can do a blade), then shape away the diamond section with a blade and finalize with a high grit sanding sponge. Then add the fittings with greenstuff.

@ Captain Harlock
I have just stumbled over this thread. These are fantastic sculpts. I have seen the 12 dollies on the Steel Fist Miniatures site, and already figured they were a good answer for the spare arms etc in the PM plastic sets. These last complete figures will be fabulous additions too.
When are they likely to be available to buy?
Cheers

Thank you for your kind words.
These minis are in the casting service waiting to be cast. August is vacations month in Greece, so hopefully these will be done by the first days of September plus the delivery time.
This is a commission but I do hold the commercial/trade rights ( I offer two price ranges, with or without the trade rights). They will be available either through me or a company that might opt to buy them and produce them, but as a courtesy to the client who commissioned them that will take at least some months, in order for him to be the first who enjoys them. I think that’s reasonable.
Stay tuned here and optionally at my instagram https://www.instagram.com/talos.miniatures/

Cool! Exciting stuff too! I am not in a hurry … still in deep with my Victorian colonial project, but planning a medieval adventure for next year.

As he said, and also in North Africa, Greece, Grenada, Mediterranean and any place that they were fighting against the Ottomans.
-
I requested these. I'm not 100% certain that men at arms on the Iberian peninsula fought in this manner, with a base. Armors in Spain are usually displayed in this way in museums. I liked the aesthetic and wanted it reproduced in miniature. They are turning out really well. I requested a set of 6 bodies, and 7 heads. I'll probably request a few more because I want to go ahead and get all of the body types, and heads, that I've been looking for. Most of the heads I requested are suitable for the 15th century, a few are more for use with landsknechts: bellowed sallets and other types.

Your work is incredible, you are truly a master. Other periods are crying out for this as well. Just a thought... I will wait patiently for you to produce some bodies for the mountain of dark age limbs and heads I have acquired.
-
Sorry if I missed it, but did you post up where these will be availabel for purchase, assuming they will be for sale?

To be honest it didn’t cross my mind until you mentioned it. If there is a demand that justifies the production costs it is possible. I will soon post the first resin samples. My caster inserts thin steel wire into the pole arm shafts and in that way they are basically extremely resilient combining the detail of resin and the strength of metal. That also means that they are more costly to produce than any white metal weapon’s pack.
-

Jim
Presently they are all commissioned work at various stages of production for the customers. I do hold the trade rights though, so they will be made available either by me or established miniature companies interested to include them into their collection.
The last of 9 with pole arms and the set of the sallet helmets are currently being cast.
-

Thank you for your kind words. That could actually happen if there is interest.
This whole venture is basically a happy accident. I started it because I wanted to use my heaps of spare Perry arms and head bits. Initially I thought to cast some Perry bodies at home, but frankly it didn’t sit right with me morally, plus the fact that they would be more of the same. I never expected that they would be so popular.
I really enjoy doing them and the people who commissioned more, each have different ideas
/directions they want to explore and this keeps it very interesting for me.
-
@ Captain Harlock
I would definitely be interested in the resin / wire weapons set. Greater robustness is an excellent idea.
Cheers
JJ

To be honest, it would not be a priority, right now. I don’t have any of these Dollies cause I haven’t start any Tudor project yet. If a commission took me there, like the furnace sallets, which I ended up enjoying tremendously, maybe, but I seriously can not promise anything now cause I don’t want to disappoint anyone.

wow. these are all amazing!
was the question answered, if the latest head variants will be on sale somewhere?
and does anyone know a retailer from steelfist miniatures on the continent? I find % to calculate always very offputting, especially when I don't know how much customs and taxes will add later on.
great work!

Hi Seditiosus,
I run Steel Fist Miniatures, and can confirm that I've purchased for production in metals - 15 bodies and the sets of both 15th and 16th century helms/heads - from Yannis.
They'll be sent to my casters in the New Year, so should be available in late January (I hope).
I'm a one-man-band, doing it in my spare time - so it's just the website I'm afraid - no retailers.
I have a lot of non-UK customers and so I assume that the import taxes many not be too prohibitive - but that may depend on where you live?
cheers
Simon
-
That’s excellent news, Simon.
I look forward to the helms in particular (I have the late medieval kneeling and retinue dollies already).
Merry Christmas
Cheers

That’s excellent news, Simon.
Indeed! Fantastic news! 8)

Got my first batch of retainers just before Christmas( thanks Simon). Now to upset everyone lol the great thing for me is that they not only match Perry's but also match Warlord Plastic Landsknechts and Wargames Atlantic Spanish. So in the new year there will be some dodgy characters for the Von Trinkenessen Chronicles a mix of old and new - servants defending the Manor House , peasants or poor rural troops and especially those with the long boots - Dismounted light cavalry. So win Win.

I have a lot of non-UK customers and so I assume that the import taxes many not be too prohibitive - but that may depend on where you live?
cheers
Simon
cheers, thanks for the reply (sorry for highjacking this thread). good to hear, that they will be available at some point. I have to say, that is not so much the monetary problem but rather the prospect of it that makes me not want to deal with imports. I simply don't have the time to (potentially) show up at a customs office during my day.
-
I realized that I had not post the latest additions in the pole armed rankers. These ones are a mix of heavier and lighter armor, sporting Perry heads except from the third one that has one of my own heads on.

Very nice.

Fab stuff :-* :-* :-*

I should probably add too, to those that missed it, that the previous 9 polearm troops were commissioned by me, as are the last three that Yannis posted.
Here they are as assembled by me with Perry plastic heads.

I (as Steel Fist Minis) am hoping to have stock to offer for sale in next 2 weeks - I've had the master mould castings this week and the mouldmaker has really done a fine job on getting all the fine details in Yannis's sculpts.
I'll drop a post here, when theu're ready.

That was faster than I expected, really cool news!

Blimey! Christmas comes early! 😁

Greetings. incredible work Yannis really a great evolution of poses and details, very good. Sorry for the slowness Simon, but will these also be distributed by Steelfist?

Nice blog, I'll add it to my reading list!
The plastic conversion you've got on the comparison pic looks very interesting, I he designed to be manhandling artillery or something similar?
Interesting that you say the metal casts are if anything slightly shorter than Perry - based on the ones I've got I'd say the opposite!
The first batch of Yannis' sculpts which Steel Fist sell I think mostly stand a bit taller than Perry, BUT that is I believe because they have thicker integral bases. If Yannis is reading this, is that something you're aware of, or is it necessary for the production process or something?
The second batch (leaning and kneeling ones) I do have and will check when I get home..... but I notice on your comparison pic you compared a leaning forward pose to two upright Perry poses, which isn't a fair comparison.
The most recent batch I haven't got myself yet so don't know about their exact heights of thickness of bases.
The ones Yannis sculpted for me as a private commission I've got in resin. A few of them stand a little bit taller than Perry. But mostly due to thick integral bases, and being resin they can very easily be lowered just by sanding them down. A bit trickier with metal.
But I'm just talking about a millimeter or two. And if some of us say they are slightly shorter, and some of us say slightly taller, then we can probably say on average they are about right! : )
-
Hi Charlie
Thank you … the blog really is embryonic, and will be more of a project notebook, much like my Sudan blog has turned out to be.
Handling the Steel Fist Miniatures gives the impression I have described. This certainly isn’t a criticism, and I am sure that once they have heads, arms and weapons etc and are based, the differences I perceive will vanish.
They are a lovely set of alternatives, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how they turn out.
I have forgotten what the plastic figure in the last image is up to … it’s been a couple of months since I assembled him … he may be preparing a crossbow for loading.
Cheers

I plan to raise my Perry miniatures to match the Steelfist's bodies. ;)

Let me try to clear the size issue. First of all I must say that I dont have any of the metal castings in my hands, only the clay masters and resin casts that are 100% identical to the masters either cast by myself or my local casting service.
The Perry bodies/minis are not all the same size. I know, that its not evident but if you take a micrometer to them you will see that the only standard dimension is the width of the shoulders in order to receive the two handed weapons without fitting issues. When it comes to height some are taller, some are shorter with the middle ground being the armored body with a livery standing with the feet planted apart at the same angle. The differences are very slight.
Let me say that Im talking about the plastics, which are the ones Im striving to reach quality wise. The Perry metals are indeed chunkier I assume due to production reasons and because they are 1:1 reproductions, while the plastics are refined pantographed copies of 4 up master sculpts.
All the bodies and minis made to fit with the Perry range are built over the same wire armature for 32mm minis (to the top of the head) and with the main measurements model being the plastic armored body I mentioned. For the sake of a more natural feel, as the Perrys do, I also try to ever so slightly vary the height of the models. Im talking about very slight changes (like 1mm), but always retaining the right measurements on the shoulders, chest etc and limbs proportions. Compared to the Perry plastics always, my sculpts are the same thickness or just a tiny bit chunkier in legs and arms cause they are 1:1 sculpts but compared to the Perry metals yes they are slender (as their plastics are too).
When Charlie sent me the photos with his mixed units with my first sculpts, his commissioned pieces, and kitbashed Perry minis, frankly I had to look two times to make out which were mine.
Once I clear my bench a bit in the following days I will take some comparison pics with the various Perry bodies and mine to illustrate the point.
-
And now something slightly different.
I wasnt sure if I should post it here but since its Perry sized and 15th century based, I will anyway :D. This is a female RPG character based on an illustration provided by the client. It is meant for a historically based DnD group. Im guilty of the fancy crow head war hammer. What can I do, I love my bling :D

Great quality sculpting work!
-
Let me try to clear the size issue. …
Thank you Captain for your detailed and thoughtful post.
My sense of the really very slight differences comes from handling and looking rather than measuring … and in no way is it a problem, and certainly not an ‘issue’.
I bought five sets (LM08, LM09, LM10, LM11, LM12) and multiple packs of some.
These miniatures are very fine, and I am very happy with them, and looking forward to modelling with them as my project develops.
Cheers

Thank you for your kind words Jack, and your blog looks really good.
I didn’t even realize the slight variations between the Perry sculpts, before taking measurements for my sculpts. Also their heads are not the same size and not across boxes, but even within the same sets. But that tiny amount of variety ( and the more realistic anatomy proportions) imo is crucial into adding to the more natural look of Perry minis when put into units.

You’re more than welcome. These dollies will add welcome variety to my retinues.
I guess it’s a matter of ‘knowing the sprues’ and making careful choices when matching limbs and heads to bodies. I like the more natural anatomical proportions (as much as I love the look of the Front Rank range, they are just a bit too well fed).
I have only just got started with the blog, but it will become a project note book, as my Sudan blog has. I will, of course, be posting details of my use of the dollies.

Actually this one is available send me a PM

Those are lovely. If I didn’t already have several hundred Perry figures, I’d definitely be in for some of these. But I really don’t need any more (on top of the unfinished Perry and Warsteel units I’ve yet to wrap up) lol
I have always thought your bodies look a little leaner and more slender in the leg than the Perry plastic bodies, but I’ve never held one in my hand, so that’s just an impression from all the photos you’ve posted. This latest batch look particularly good though. And people are all slightly different shapes and sizes anyway, so what the heck :)

Actually the legs fall between the Perry plastics and metals. The plastic Perry hosed bodies for some reason tend to be shorter and stockier while the armored ones with one or two exceptions taller and leaner. The metal ones are abit chunkier but since I want mine to fit with the plastics I follow that model, and frankly it’s harder cause the Perry plastics are actually sculpted as 4 ups not 1:1 scale. But since I don’t have access to that kind of tech, I just try to do my best into smoothing everything out.
Btw you are the cause that I fell into Perry Wotr, it’s all your fault lol lol

That’s not fair! 😭 🤣
Interesting observations about sizing again … and truly exceptional sculpting at 1:1 then. I’m well impressed.

I’ve assembled figures using quite a few of the Steel Fist dollies now, and I have to say I think they are great, and have met my expectations. Care is needed when selecting arms, especially the paired ones. These invariably need small amounts of filler (I use ProCreate) … but then again so do the Perry plastics when combined with paired arms.

Looking good, I look forward to seeing paint on them. I see you've also had a go at a medieval limbered artillery piece like I have!
I must bookmark your blog.
-
Thank you!
Have you had a go at a limber? Which one is yours? (I wonder if I have seen it?) I hope to make some proper progress with it over the next week or so. I have a bunch of crossbow men to finish assembling, then I can begin to get paint on them.
I have decided to start with foreign troops while I work out which retinues to represent, although I have a mounted figure for John Clifford underway, to be joined by The Flower of Craven.

Ah! Yes! I follow your blog.
I considered making one like yours, and a limber drawn by two horses, but just now I am thinking of making a wheeled limber drawn by one horse. It’s an early stage in my thinking, but I’ll work out more detail over the next week or so.

Good question - try asking on the facebook group 'XV Century European Armour'.

Great looking heads, I can't wait to get my hands on these, they would work really well for a unit of Italian mercenaries in Burgundian service I have in mind...
On the subject of headdress, I think the word you're looking for is mazocchio. Have a look at this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/Uccello_mazzocchio2.jpg from this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaperon_(headgear), in the paragraph The capuccio in Renaissance art. Hope it helps :)

I like mazzocchio, it sounds pretty fancy.
I also found the term "torse" https://www.dictionary.com/browse/torse.
-
I think "torse" is an English terms and refers more to the ones worn over bascinets in slightly earlier period. "Mazzocchio" would then be the ones worn over bascinets in Italy. I think they may also be a difference in construction and material, but pleas don't quote me 😅

I decided that i need more Italian flavor, what better than some Barbute helmets. Im thinking of doing some more variants.

Brilliant! I was wondering about this, but hadn’t got around to doing the research. The rest of the wiki article is really interesting too.
