The British form up for undercoating:
Edit: Of course I should have said that these are from the Musketeer Miniatures' Late Roman range (including a fresh out of the mould, Vortigern and standard bearer - thanks Darren :D )
Dr. The Viking's figures are also by Bill, but come from the Early Saxons' range.
-
Yeah!! This is my favourite part of a new project... cracking open the minis.
Painting and playing... not so much! lol
Can't wait to see more!
-
Good to see a plentiful supply of embossed 20mm copper coated bases! :D
Will follow with interest 8)

Only fixing minis on tails for obvious reasons ;)
-
Looking forward to following this project, just started painting a few late Romans for a Saga/Dux game. Trying to round out a few projects before the end of the year and clear a few backlogs.
Can I ask do you know how the Musketeer Late Romans scale up against Gripping Beast figures?
I've heard the Saxons are well scaled but the Romans are significantly taller.
-
Very nice Stephen, will follow your project closely !
Best regards Michael
-
I am Dr. The Viking and I approve this message. ;D

I will be following with great interest...

c'mon get cracking :D

Hi Mr J,
Here's a comparison shot against one of GB's British and Welsh Kingdoms sculpted by Soapy:
I think the GB Romano-British range is roughly the same size, but I've no figures from that range to put up :(
Regards,
-
Excellent. Thanks a lot. They are close enough for me.
Your Welshman looks great too! Looking forward to watching this project develop.
-
Looks very promising indeed :) just started me own little SAGA adventure (vikings of course) but must admit I'm very tempted by using Bill's early Saxons for that game. Maybe they are more suited for 5th - 6th century, but still think they could work okay - and they do look very sweet.
-
Is it a 50 ft Woman!? Is it Owlbears!? Is it Klakks from Dimension X?
NO!
It is Saxon bowmen!
I have little or no idea what these guys would look like, but I claim the right of 'historical fantasy' and have painted them as I saw fit.
I made myself a 'proof of concept' yesterday... Worked out decently so now I just have to finish the last 36 odd miniatures. Easy does it. :-X lol
-
Great work matey :)
-
Stunning work ! :-*
Remember to keep the missile troops out of the way of the tought blokes...if the British have any... ;)
Best regards Michael

Off to a good start!
-
Awesome job Doc. Beautiful paintings and think you have just convised me, that i need some of these as levy for my Vikings.

I'll be watching this project closely. Great work!

Thanks dude. Let's see what janner's got up his sleeve.

I was never contemplating getting the archers anywhere near the enemy. lol
Great work matey :)
Get to work!
*whiplash*
-
Cool. Join us!
Might! :D
Now play your campaign and move 400 years up in time - and my vikings will (probably) be ready to conquer "your" British Isles :)
-
Still working on my Dux Brits myself, all based and primed, now they are all staring angrily at me for the next round of pigment placement!!
-

Mine are in the same state, but hope to have some troops ready to counter the Saxon hoards shortly :)

I still think that "Dark Ages" is a misnomer for projects like this are clearly Late Roman in style and should therefore be rightfully placed in the Antiquity board! >:( ;)
Okay, just envious on all those great figures & armies popping up here. This one will be a favourite! Also it's always nice to see a project unfolding from bare metal to the finished models. Please keep it up!
-
That's a valid point though. I guess we might as well have put it in antiques. But since our common interest in history seems to revolve around the medieval period this project sort of confines the start of that sphere.
Janner's the buff here though and I'm just a measly apprentice...
My take on the Saxons will be slightly ahistorical in that I'll go for stereo typical portrayals. All of themw will be blonde for example and all my geodrith will have bits of red cloth because the warlord has decreed it so. While this is clearly historically wrong I think it gives a nice feel to the overall look in a not very uniform period. And as mentioned I consider it historical fantasy in a sense.

Nope, they are exactly the same size and style.
-
To be clear, I was just kidding.
I have no issues (well, no big ones anyway lol) with "crossover" project appearing this side or the other. It just shows how pointless certain period classifications are after all. But that's rather by design, and I'm happy to follow your progress here or anywhere else. :)
-

To be fair, there is an overlap between Classical and the Early Middle Ages, and I'm no fan of Gibbon's 476 A.D. date as a universal line in the sand.
However, as these rules are set in post Classical Britain, here is as good a place as any ;)
-
To be clear, I was just kidding.
Sure! I got that. I just wanted to banter while I haven't got new pictures to post. lol
-
Mine are in the same state, but hope to have some troops ready to counter the Saxon hoards shortly :)
LOL! Well, for the just about the first time I put primed lead on the table (swallowed my pride!) to start playing Dux B -- had a lot of fun with my Romano Brits, and discovered that Bibamaus (drinking heavily before a battle) and trying to stay in Shield Wall don't mix very well... lol
-
Today I dropped all my unpainted (but base coated and with spears attached) figures on a concrete floor... bad move!
A bit of a set back...
So instead of showing you 6 finished geodrith I'd rather just show where I'm at at the moment. That's blogging for you:
Geodrith are nearly done and the geodruth or dughruth or whatever are only just starting to get some paint. Big brushes here. :D
-
With the Godless heathens massing, it's time to call in some help:
However, sometimes a few professional archers might also come in handy:
Still got to sort out that light box :-[
Edit: tuffs to follow's varnishing
-
I love watching these multi-person arms races. Inspiring and makes me want to paint (instead of be sitting at work).
-
Like Dux to Water
I see what you did there ::) lol
Will be watching this one gents... Just bear that in mind... ;D
cheers
James
-
I smell Christian blood! >:D
Looking good Stephen. The priest had me worrying a bit when I thought it was blood on his cloth there. You want to sort your white balance on yer camera but let's have a look at it Thursday.
I might need to order some reinforcements soon.
Sayonara Skraelings!
-
Like a Dux to water
I see what you did there ::) lol
You should have seen the ones the good doctor turned down :D :D
-
very nice looking Saxons Torbjorn, vill come in hade then to conquer some British land.
Stephen, your priest won´t help you much to stop the Barbarian hoard, the Archers might do you some good but you need a real shieldwall to stop the Saxons, even a levy shieldwall can do you some god:) And as a mentioned to the Saxons, keep the archers out of the way of the real warrios or they surley die.
Very interesting to follow you joint project !
Best regards Michael
-
Bit slow to catch on to this one...Doh!
Looking very promising.
Shall be following with a muchness of enthusiasm.
:D
-
Great work. Looks promising. :)
-
The armies begin to assemble...
Promising starts!

Managed to get a few more minutes in on these guys. Sorry about the unfinished state, but that's what blogging is all about right? Showing the process and all.
Same recipe as before - heavy really basic brush of undercoat colours, sepia wash by Vallejo, really dry brushing of iraquian sand (VAllejo) and then fiddly work on skin and hair.. bucklers and bases to go later.
Next I need to paint up this so I wont exhaust my dark age painting impetus. lol
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--Y8-s3yysnE/UMbll_cMSCI/AAAAAAAAFz0/LMwQP1754EY/s866/P1230214.JPG)

Very nice matey :-*
The Vallejo inks, do they dry matt and are they water based?
Also, that Minotaur looks rather spiffing, details from whence it came etc please :)
cheers
James

They have a matt, almost dead, finish indeed. I think they're alchohol based ( taken completely out of the blue.. go to the web page to check it properly) and I'm fairly certain that they're not too easy on your lungs either. But they're cheap and do the job well. lol
Also, that Minotaur looks rather spiffing, details from whence it came etc please :)
Mate sculpted it for fun and didn't care for it once it was done. So it's a one of a kind. lol
-
Lovely project, guys, great ideas, nicely painted figures, looking forward for more.
The mino is pretty nice, not bad for a "just for fun" figure.
-
Well, this all seems to be coming along rather nicely, chaps.
Nice work.
:-*
As for that big cow-headed fella: He is the nuts!
You lucky boy!

My next WIP shots will have to wait until Friday - work is dragging me to UK for a couple of days :-[

Any colour is pretty much fine. really rich black, purple or blue are expensive, but other colours are totally fine. A good rich red was afordable as wer erich and dark greens, and greys. Washed out and pale purple or blue were also usable. DOnt ofrget, pink was a mans colour back then......

Gorgeous bull that is, Dr. The! Looking forward to your painting job on him ... ;D

With the heathen hordes massing on the Saxon Shire, it time for reinforcements - quality over quantity with the six man Comitatus (shields will be done last)

and the first named character: the son of a centurian, Iago is a man mountain with the constitution of an ox (sort of a slim Jimbibbly ;) ):

I'm not overly happy with the leather straps to his armour. So they may get tweaked later :)
-
Awesome, Dude!
No, really, very nice work young lad! You are gaining momentum.
-
Very nice Steve :-*
cheers
James

Greate paint job Stephen !!!

You do know that the evil genius Dr the Viking has recruited a necromancer to his ranks, and plans to summon a horde of Zombies, dont you...?

:o
Wonderful paintjob on a great, characterful miniature.
:-*
It fits in with YOUR style perfectly.
:D
(And somebody to lead those zombies of yours too. Bonus!)
;)

A set of slightly less well painted gedrihtoughgut. But in all fairness I'd rather save the sweat for the characters and just churn out the rank and file. lol

Great stuff matey
Photos of some fearful pueri will be up tomorrow :)
-
Churnout or not, they are looking mighty fine reavers and raiders.

I'm not done yet! Before you display your fruit baskets here are the Saxon work men:
Happy Yule Tide suckers! lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTTv1VAX8EA
Edit: Blimey, looks like they've all polished their knobs before the photo shoot. Shields knobs that is... ;)
-
Looking good, nothing like a bit of Saxon iron!
-
The first of the pueri have started to form up around their hornblower:
Looks like it'll take them some time to get organised. So best get into Shieldwall!

You probably nearly are though. lol
Meanwhile, as all thing's molecular can bite me today, I tried to take an atmospheric photo of what's I painted as of yet:

I got the rest of the lowly warriors' hands drilled out and glued the miniatures on bases also. I hope to get spears in their hands this evening too. I'm tempted at trying gluing the shields in place before undercoat because I found it quite fiddly with my previous method... in fact I think the shields are what takes the longest for me!
-
The group shot is great.
Very imposing looking warband being put together here.
Love 'em!
:-*
(Even Especially Brownbeard!)
-
You probably nearly are though. lol
Don't say that, his ego gets massaged enough as it is ::) lol

Ah the gentle hands of Miss Finland - oh sorry, you said ego gets massaged. Ahem, yes, right. Back to painting....
-
Stunning paint jobb by you both!!!
Best regards Michael
-
Fantastic looking army! Congrats and thanks for sharing.
-
Great thread. Excellent looking mini's.
-
Stunning work from you both! They will make up for a great game, I think.
-
Thanks for all the kind comments. I'll try and spoil you with my 'speshal' photography skills and some more pueri later on today :D
I know that Dr. The V is close to having finished all of his troops, but a new Gripping Beast berserker figure may be running interference ;)
Happy New Year!
-
Yeah, that and the 4 berserkers of my own (janner is now one of few people to have seen my entire berserker collection) ... and science! Lots of interference in fact. lol lol
Happy new year from here too. Not gonna offer as much as a single vow for 2013. I've learned from past mistakes. 8) 8)

Here we go.
The first batch of pueri have picked up their shields and can now join the battle line:
with another batch forming up behind them:
Yeah, I know. I'm a man down on the Dux unit size of 6. Their commander is not quite ready, but will be along with his standard bearer and 5 more pueri shortly - they may even be another character in there too. The it's onto the Warriors and the last couple of characters...
-
Ooo, speshal :D
cheers
James

Is narse....

It's the first time I've used Little Big Man shield transfers.
I've found them really easy to use - top quality and recommended :D

Might be able to squeeze one in later, but family duty calls this afternoon ;)

This thread is so cool! Great miniatures, keep em comin'
-
Good looking minis !!!
best regards Michael
-
Lovely Arthurians, Janner. Beautiful painting and basing and the shield transfer finished them of very nicely. Now, lets see some more .... :)
-
excellent stuff all round!
Lovely to see one of my lads sneaked in there, even if his beard does need a wash! lol
-
What a great project. The minis look awesome!
Can I just ask what the best way you've found of gluing your shields on? I like to paint everything separately and glue them on when the mini and the shield are both finished however they have a habit of popping off almost straight away. Any tips or advise would be appreciated.
-
These are 2 cracking armies, Love the hermit druid, may pick one up for my celts :-*

Pinning helps. Generous amounts of superglue also helps. Waiting till the glue has settled completely also helps. Other than that I føcking hate gluing shields and spears. lol lol
-
Do you have a link for Rogue Miniatures? I have been looking at a couple of Reaper figures for female Druids.
OK, so now I've finished my Saxon necromancer:

There. The hearth guard is done. Still waiting for the rest of the geoduth to be finished... won't be this week but perhaps next week.
I absolutely abhor painting shields... and I'm not having a great time doing it so I slob. And that's why I've decided to go LBM transfers from here on. I'll never paint a shield design again!
-
I particularly like the violet and green one :-*
It's always good to have one figure destined to be the first casualty in the unit ;)
-
Haha yeah. The designs are inspired by candy wrappings, umbrella corporation and a nuclear danger sign....
-
It's always good to have one figure destined to be the first casualty in the unit ;)
HA HA! lol lol lol Poor guy... I think those shields look alright!
-
Pastel shields!
First incarnation of the village people! lol

Those are realy nice ;D
Though I have to agree with Paleskin cause the pastel colours look a bit ... odd ;)
-

Haha yeah! Well - goes to show what I know about Saxons. I the end I just go for whatever takes my fancy. And Curtis comments on pink being a manly colour back then got me thinking. lol lol
I'm very very tempted by the idea of painting up some pulp figures and do my Project Wagner using these miniatures.
Idea is simply that a crazed German scientist has had the luck to synthesise a small group of complete Saxons (shields, clothes, spears and all) from some ancient remains and some novel DNA recombinatory techniques. A crack team of British para troopers now have to spoil this plot. lol
-
Yeah, then they can lose to two types of Brits: early medieval and modern(ish) lol

Finished my first character - Adelwealh, champion of our Saxon Lord!
What can I say - every tale needs a Vader. lol
He's apparently both adventurous and has a lust for power. 32 years old.
Oh, and the 6 strapping lads are new as well.
More on the blog: http://clovermilk.blogspot.dk/2013/01/adelwealh-saxon-champion-of-evil.html

Oooooh. I like him. Very sinister... :o :)

The last of my duguth are done now.
Think I finally found a nice recipe for shields... battle damage! lol
I wasn't entirely happy with Adelwealh so I added a bit to his shield:

Think that's better ;)
-
Love the chipped shields and stripped standard.
Darth's new shield looks cool too or is he now the Ra'vn ;)
-
Really impressive. It's great seeing this project come together from the very start. Keep Em coming. How many more do you guys have to paint before we see the games begin?

I'm down to twelve warriors and two characters left on the painting tray. The last of the pueri are just awaiting their shields. :D
We've both been aiming for the end of the month. But all too soon will come the need for foederati, horsemen etc. ;)
-
Nice work, you Bad Crazy Viking!
That seems to have solved the shield problem.
And very nicely too.
:-* :-* :-*
Shouldn't Darth's sword be red though........ ::)
-
I'm down to three characters.
I think the biggest hurdle will be reading the actual rules. I've never been too fond of that sort. :D
I'm counting on jabber to sort it while he paints his last lot :D
I'm going to attempt some foederati made from warlord plastics with west wind heads... had it all lying around and my wallet voted for me. lol
-
Here's a dryfit of what I'm considering for foederati/mercenaries. I'm perhaps going to add some more facial hair with GS and capes to som of them if I got the skills.
What do you think? Would it work at all?! If it's mercenaries surely a bit of leeway is allowed? They'd have all kinds of equipment and be a exotic lot all together, right? lol
Here's a comparison with one of my duguth:
Let me know what needs to be fixed, if you think there are any discrepancies.
-
I'd go with bigger shields, which would work for either 'British' or 'German' mercenaries :)
-
You should call Adelwealh Adelvader. ;D
The mercs look good, though bigger shields might go well. It'll make them look different to the rest of your force too.

Adelwaeder in that case ;)
Yeah I'll see wha shields I can find in my storage.

The hero of the day:
This here be my 1st noble I think. I a rolled a 'flatulent' 31 year old son of a peasant with an iron liver.
The original figure I had for this character just didn't fit that description and will be used for something else.

Hope you like.. or don't mind if I do!
Tried to use less light as I always have a hard time photographing white. Don't know if it worked...
-
I really like him. Lovely colours. You're getting better all the time :)
I really loathe those squatty-legged plastic Celts waving their arms around though... Such naff figures... How can you do that to the rest of your lovely forces? ;)

You're right. Half of them look as if they're taking a crap. It was merely an attempt to make it on the cheap...
Janner is telling me that I want some goths from musketeer miniatures instead. I guess I should start sweet talking the the red haired Swedish valkyrie...
-
:o :o :o
The Hero of the Day is a great bit of brushwork, sir!
I reckon he is the best one in the warband so far.
Lovely highlighting on him, an excellent balance against the dark pallette of the other chap.
Exquisite!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Nice!
You brush is getting quite talented nowadays, Dr. :)
-
Really nice, looking forward to seeing more.
I agree with janner and think you should go with Musketeer Miniature goths. Was thinking about getting a few myself to mix in with my Saxons.
Thanks for posting
-
I thank you all!
I don't think my technique has improved though. I'm simply allocating more time to each miniature. I always make an estimate when starting a project; the more miniatures the less time for each or I'll never finish.
And 12 armoured Goths with shields are now en route from musketeer island to the Danish kingdom.
Edit: wrong use of a hyphen.

Last of the pueri with officer and standard bearer have made the muster:

Lovely work mate! I can't wait till we have our first game of this shite. I think they've copied a Saxon banner design! Or did I glue a wrong one on top?!
I like the way all our troops seem to be negotiating a field heavily overgrown with reeds.
In 20 years time we'll all look back at this period as the 'reed' period.. not the red period as with Games Workshop. lol
-
Well you did say we were doing Dumnonia - there's lots on Elephant grass on the 'muur'...
Dragon standards was kind of the 'in-thing':

Where is the head of the second figure from the left from?
And to echo the others, bigger shields.
-
2nd from the left is a regular Celtic heaf fron warlord.
And to echo myself I'm jot going to do these as I've ordered musketeer miniatures goths instead.
These will be turned into zombies to fight my Romans instead.

Jolly good stuff all round!! Well done!!!!! You can't beat a bit of Dux gaming!! :D

So with the last 12 Warriors at various stages of completion. Here's another character, short and wiry, cruel, lustful and a noble-born exile (hence the pink trousers!):
The normal character models looked too impressive for this chappie. So he's a simple conversion of the Musketeer Late Roman musician.
-
Very nice! And bloody big picture! lol
I seem to be unable to find the 4th character in my force so I'll have to transform one of my regulars in to one...
-
Good looking mini Stephen !
-
Very good!! One of the things I like about Dux Brit is the way the character generation element leads us to pick suitable models for the heroes' character traits (see my 'Maximus Minimus' model on my blog)...Though by no means mandatory, we all seem to be doing it, which is just great!!
-
Very nice! And bloody big picture! lol
It's the lustfulness coming out :o
-
Pink trousers and lustfulness may combine in a way which concerns some of his men.
Lovely paint job!
Rich
-
Sounds like he's a great chap :?
Figure looks good too
-
This is a marvellous thread, gents! Great paintwork, both of you!
-
The last of the warriors are just about to head outside for varnishing, leaving two characters to finish: the main man and his bodyguard.
The Beastie Boys kindly included some spare shields in my order. So I intend to follow Andy's lead and turn some of them into shield wall markers.
Anyway, photos of the warriors will be up tomorrow :)
Looks like the good Dr and I will be set for our first game next week :o
-
So that's that for me - I'm officially done painting my Dux starter!
My generalissimo is done.
It's rather nice to see a project finish like this. It happens all too rarely to lead fools like me. :)
I've put the boring close ups on my blog. ;)
-
He looks great! Now to show a picture of the complete warband :)
-
Can I ask a dumb question? What is the best glue to use for attaching metal figures to bases?
-
Another stunning miniature.
-
Very individual choice. I use a coloured painting/caulking tube product that I then water down. I based a number of 28mm & 15mm figures today using this method. Today after I slathered the watered down compund on to my metal washer, I then sprinkled my ground effect scatter (2 different lots) straight on to the compound.
Can I ask a dumb question? What is the best glue to use for attaching metal figures to bases?
-
Simpley brilliant!

I find that cyanoacrylates - 'superglues' - have the highest bonding strenght in these matters. Maybe other compounds have even higher coefficients. But unless you're in the habit of dropping of your miniatures.

Great project and results 8)

Great going matey. Love the golden armour and shield design.

Wonderful stuff Chaps, top nothc painting all round :-*.
Its been great to see this come together from the very beginning. I can't wait to see the entire warbands and some AAR's. ;D

You've made two lovely looking little armies there. Well done. Looking forward to seeing the first battle report :)

Cadwallon looked out over the misty waters. The warm weather had come early this year, and with it, the threat of attack from the heathen. King Erbin of Dumnonia had sent him out from Caer Uisc to watch over the entrance to the great river. No word had come from the settlements on Ventis for some months and Erbin feared they have been lost. A Saxon force wintering there could easily make use of the easterly winds to raid the southern coast. Such a wind had arisen in the last few days, but it was still too weak this morning the clear the sea mist.
At his side, his champion Yvor pulled his rough woollen cloak around him. 'Bugger this for a game of soldiers, boss', he grumbled, 'They'll not come this morning. Lets get back to that farmstead and warm our bones.' The idea was certainly attractive, but Cadwallon felt something in the air. A professional warrior, like his father before him, Cadwallon could sometimes sense when things were amiss...

Great stuff!! :-* and nice cinematic picture.

Brilliant narrative and a brilliant game I might add.
We managed to snap a few photos of the action but we were quite caught up lol
Also I realised that I'd painted more than I needed for my force. Haha.
Unfortunately my shaman took a plunge against a concrete floor.... not good!

As Cadwallen sought to peer through the sea mist, the sound of church bells echoed over his shoulder. He looked at Yvor, ‘Have I missed a saint’s day?’. In truth, he didn’t expect a reply from his gruff champion. The son of a women from Kernow, Yvor’s version of Christianity was as close to pagan as their wild Saxon foes. Their collection of local saints Cadwallon could barely pronounce, never mind remember. No, this meant trouble, and his gut told him the Saxons were at the heart of it.
The heathen had landed further up the coast and marched swiftly inland, as the parish priest was heading outside to tend to his pigs, he caught sight of the glint of armour as heathens crossed the hill south of the village. He quickly called for his flock to head for the woods and tuned to hide the few items of worth his church held.
Within minutes the Saxons were swarming through the village, like bloated flies feasting on an open sore. There was little point searching the muddy hovels of the villagers, the Saxon Warlord was not here for pigs or slaves. So he led two groups of his warriors into the church. Here at least there was gold to be had, but the priest had clearly had time to hide it well.
Cadwallen had deployed his forces well. Although caught off-guard, troops were well-placed to cover various eventualities. As his Centurion father had drummed into him, ‘Failing to prepare is preparing to fail’. Morcant was quartered in the next village with a band of trained warriors and Iago with Cadwallen’s household troops and another band of warriors only a short march away. The British lord put his trust in his subordinates to hold the heathen at bay whilst he gathered more men. The Saxons wretches would pay dearly for their blasphemy.
Morcant quickly drove some Saxon bowmen hovering on the outskirts of the village back and formed his men to cover the arrival of Iago and his troops. Seeing the British appear on his western flank, the Saxon warlord dispatched his Hearthguard under a warrior dressed in fur-lined robes to confront them. As the Saxon jogged forwards a hulking, black clad warrior emerged from their midst. Not so good, thought Morcant. Thankfully Iago and his men had arrived to bolster his line. Now we shall see the mettle of these men.
As the heathen screamed obscenities in their guttural tongue, the British line stoically formed line. ‘Look at me’, spoke Iago, ‘This is the land of our fathers, they have bled for it and so shall we. Do not step back, do not look to your fellows, but kill the pagan scum that infest our land. They shall not pass’.
Led by their mighty champion, the Saxon wedge struck the British line like an enraged bull. Shields were shattered and spears sundered in the first shocking exchange. The British held. Again came the Saxons, their champion standing tall and swinging his great sword against the enemy line. The British held. Gradually, their superior numbers allowed them to slip men around the ends of the Hearthguard’s line. As the battle hung in the balance, Cadwallon emerged from the dark forest surrounded by those villagers collected on his march north. Rallying Iago’s battered companions, Cadwallon sent a group left to bypass the battle and threaten the Saxon party sacking the church. Meanwhile he led the other into the fray. Overwhelmed, the heathen line collapsed and fled.
However, even as the night-clad champion fell to a Morcant's blade, shouts of joy were heard from the church. The Saxon Lord had found what he had come for and quickly led the remains of his force from the field. Victory, but at a cost. The British harried the retreating raiders back to their boats and it would take some months for both sides to recover. As he looked at the loot, the Saxon Warlord signed, barely enough to cover his expenses. They would have to come again and this time he would not underestimate the might of the British warriors.
-
Hurrah!
Brilliant stuff :-*
-
Great stuff, Janner!
I really enjoyed reading that.
:-*
It must feel great to finally set up the forces for action after all the effort that you fellas have put into the project.
It has been great following your journey to this point, now get back to it and play some more games so we can catch some more AAR's.
;)
-
Totally agree with Mason.
Great stuff, thanks for posting.

Top form
Really nicely written
I played 2 games last week, losing the first but in the second gave the Saxons a very bloody nose catching them outside the church
Have now added a priest to my force after the effort as a reward

I think I actually 'gamed out' on IABSM a couple of years ago. That's what happens when you play something a lot I think... but this Dux thing has got my lard going again.
Very very nice work and, wow, have you been working on the layout! My old Bag The Hun and IABSM look like the sort of pamphlets you get at seminars in comparison. lol

The village priest had been unimpressed with the loss of his Communion cups and heavy gold cross. Somehow it ended up being Cadwallon’s fault, and the Bishop had made his displeasure known. Of course, rumours surrounding Lucilius’ visits to the prioress of Polslo Convent did not help, nor did Yvor’s breaking the priests nose after he started throwing dung at them – that had cost him much of what remained in his purse.
King Erbin had been forced to publically reprimand Cadwallon, but privately noted that his dispositions had prevented fair worse consequences than the loss of a few pieces of fancy crockery. Still, he advised Cadwallon to steer clear of court for a while to let things settle down. Frankly, the further Lucilius was from the prioress the better!
So here they were stuck in an old border post watching the longer summer days slowly crawl by. Cadwallon had relied on Iago to escort their supplies from Exeter each week, but Lucilius had been growing increasing truculent. However, latterly, he had been diverted by leading a series of defensive patrols. Merchants had brought word of Saxon raiders and many of the peasants had already moved into the forest with their livestock.
Today seemed much like any other though, and as the sun peeped over the trees, Lucilius was due to return from his latest expedition. As Cadwallon strolled the ramparts to take the morning air and check on his sentries, he could just make out a small band of warriors emerging from the forest to the east. The dark column of men moved swiftly along the old Roman road, seemingly intent on getting back to camp as soon as possible to enjoy a warm breakfast and well-deserved rest.
As Cadwallon turned away to head back down the steps, a sharp horn blast echoed through the morning air, ‘To arms, to arms’ cried the British leader. Lucilius’ patrol was under attack. A band of Saxon raiders was sweeping down upon their flank.
Even with the patrol within sight, Cadwallon knew it would be a tight race to reach his men before they were overrun. Outnumbered and outmanoeuvred, he could see Lucilius forming his men into a rough shieldwall as the Saxons thundered towards them.
Cadwallon could already hear Iago ‘motivating’ their local volunteers into some semblance of order, and his loyal household troops were already on the move.
An endless stream of enemy warriors seemed to descend on the patrol, forcing them further and further away from safely.
Having blunted their charge, a gallant band of British warriors sort to hold the enemy, while Lucilius took the other half of his men south in a broad arc away from danger.
The ploy did not work, the enemy seemed intent on chasing down Lucilius rather than fighting his men. The main British force stood helpless as the Saxon warlord led his men on towards Lucilius’ small group.

It was a hopeless situation, angry and frustrated, Cadwallon could do nothing to reach the enemy in time and only a handful of the original patrol made it to safety.

Why had the enemy warlord seemed to be focused on the capture of just one man? What interest did he have in Lucilius?

You need some music to accompany this horrendous set back:

All in all a very confusing game, down to the fact that things like how to handle prisoners in game and in the end of scenario context... and the fact that one of our units was fighting on the edge of the board! lol lol
We handled the latter by putting in another gaming board.. lol
We will choose (well I think we did lest I be mistaken) to say that prisoners are just done for after the battle and that the winning margin is increased as per casualties to show the ransom gained in the future.. or something.
Another wee thing: I hoarded the retreat cards from turn 1, which Stephen didn't know (of course!). In the end it took my win from a measly +2 to +5 (+6 or even more if we'd counted the prisoners and noble as dead I think).
That kind of took the 'virginity' out of the whole thing and I find it a bit hard to see myself continuing using the cards that way. It seems like quite a huge bonus. So my idea is (to keep us from hoarding cards from now on) to say that who evey has more cards get a single +1. Not +1 for every card above.
Aaaanyway I'm looking forward to continuing this campaign.
The nameless Saxons will raid again next month and Stephen will choose whether to defend his lands in a slightly battered state or let the Saxes get away with it.
Meanwhile Lucilius is offered a chance to break out of his captivity in a small break out scenario that I'm planning. Maybe the scenario will suck the donkey's balls, but hey, I'm up for that as well... lol lol

Nice AAR !
We never had the problem with the retreat/pursuit cards, its the only way? to get the higher results at the winner table...
Best regards Michael

I think we're going to make a table that fits our temperaments instead. I want the on table action to decide the outcome of the battle and not the cards.
We will probably have a few more games before doing anything radical.

We played another game:

I really that last pics of the Roman shieldwall clashing with the Saxon battle line. Very exciting stuff!
When playing Sharp Practice - another Lardies ruleset - with Furt, we assigned one soldier to escort and guard a prisoner. In the game he marched him back to the shoreline at gunpoint. He was worth a bit, so it made sense at the time. It seems like you need either a GM or someone without a vested interest in winning, to make these decision... as you pointed out in your blog.
When I've thought about how to play this with two players, I imagine having some generic Saxon and Roman warbands to fight/raid against, before the actual characters you want to play have a head=to-head battle. You could form a narrative around Saxon vs. Saxon, or British warlords scuffling on the borders... that way it's a little more impartial as your treasured characters level up :)
Just a few thoughts... I'm really enjoying this thread!

Those are very nice pictures indeed!
I agree - Lardies rules can't be forced. You can't go looking for answers in the rule book for most questions. And issues should generally be adressed with common sense and period knowledge rather than citations from the book.
ON the other hand... it is so you can't blame people for trying to win. As a clever man once said:
The object of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun.
I find games like this work a lot better in a group of 4 players and a games master. But I hope we'll get more games in and somewhere along the line iron out all the discrepancies. :)
It does not look like I will be gaming a lot over the next few weeks, though, as it has dawned on someone at the university that my presence at a series of tests concerning theoretical computer chemistry is of the utmost importance in the coming weeks.
I for one cannot make out why they'd ever want me there. I can't stand computers and find the idea, that I'll once be replaced by one, to be rather disturbing.
For all of you not scientifically inclined here's what I feel like about the prospect, in music, by Mussorgsky:
