The forth is strong after dusting off the old Morannon figures for a game with or two of LotR with Dr. The Viking. Time to do a few more methinks and maybe even start a new army!

That isengard troll is great!
:o
I'm in on this. We'll play through a few scenarios. And hopefully a journeybook.
-
Cracking! May have to get some myself...
-
Ha ha ha, you're turning into a butterfly ;D
It does remind me to get mine LotR figures finished off ::) lol
cheers

You're the Lord of The Butterflies! lol ;D
-
Very nice! That troll is really cool!! Is this perchance the influence of the Hobbit and maybe revisiting the LOTR movies? :D
I'm in that situation and am in the process of painting Elves and Orcs, although I am planning to fiddle about with Dux Brit and create a variant for LOTR type games, as I think that could be most enjoyable and as Tolkien's world is militarily Dark Ages/Early Medieval in scope, I'm sure that Dux Brit is ideal.
Not to say I won't play LOTR with mine though, as it's a good system.
Do post some more pics of your forces, especialy Orcy types as I need inspiration for mine!!
-
No problem Andy, I have some warg riders and Mordor Uruk-hai awaiting assembly, and Gothmog on the painting tray.
There's just the small matter of the last of my British force for Dux to finish off first ;)
-
You're the Lord of The Butterflies! lol ;D
And that being the case I can call others butterflies with impunity ;D lol
cheers
James
-
Oh goody, more LotR pics! I'll be following this one closely. So far, nice minis. The troll is really cool. Keep 'em coming!
-
They look good! I love that there have been so many middle-earth topics lately.
-
Here's the newer version of Gothmag, somewhat larger and more true to the film than the early version I think:

Next up a warband of 12 Mordor Uruk-hai and then it's on to the Rohirrim (and more warg riders!)
-
I never much cared for the movie design of Gothmog. However, especially the rider miniature is pretty good, I have to admit. Nice post.
-
I'm not sure if this is another Dr. V et Janner thread, but I will have the audacity to post my fresh of the line and already chipped Captain of Minas Tirith.

The figures are quite small, I think, and painting eyes presents a particular challenge. Luckily my patron saint of gaming presented me with fresh brushes so now I actually attempted eyeing it out!
Please appreaciate that this is a compromise between paint and speed. I would much prefer to paint the cloth another colour than that of black, as it is dull to me and doesn't contrast the forces of Mordor proper.
What is the popular opinion on using the film miniatures but going with different schemes of colour application? ???
lol
-
::)
Oh alright, I'll change the title so that you can play too
I'm glad you said patron saint rather than fairy godmother lol lol
-
What is the popular opinion on using the film miniatures but going with different schemes of colour application? ???
Well, I think it is quite alright as long as you have some kind of idea why you take different colors. And what looks good in the movies need not automatically look good on models and vice versa. So take whatever color you like.
I tend to have certain attributes connected with colors (blue - noble, black (either) - noble or evil, red - agressive etc). So I tend to paint the models in whatever color I think is most appropriate from a character's point of view.

One word: fiefdoms ;)

Check my 'Elf test model' thread from a while back (and keep an eye out for my VERY soon to appear Middle Earth project WIP thread) for loads of examples of almost totally ignoring the film/GW colour schemes and doing my own thing with Elves and Orcs...
My Elf army will have loads of converted Galadhrim models masquerading as High Elves and similarly, my Orc force will have lots of subtly converted Orcs, neither of which will adhere to anything other than what I feel they should look like colour-scheme wise...
IMHO, unless one is planning on attending GW LOTR tournaments, I see no reason to stick to anything other than what one wants out of one's minis...
@ Janner - Very nice Gothmog... I may have to purchase one of those to lead my (as yet un-purchased) Warg Rider contingent...

Well I wasn't thinking of doing the shields differently - they'd be black with a white tree.
But if I recall correctly - in the book, doesn't it say that the banners of Gondor are white? And are there even any mentions of what their warirrors look like?

The king's banner is the silver tree on black. The stewart of Gondor only has a simple white flag. Though the guard of the Citatdel still wears black and silver.

The first of the Rohirrim, a couple of characters that aren't in my 500 point starter army, but that were hanging around and asking for it!

Go get 'em, Tiger... :D
These two look really nice. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your Rohirric host. Keep us posted.

Thin quick washes on black/white dusted undercoat.

Great looking models. :)

Very nice indeed. Hope they are well varnished for when they get thrown in the dead pile on turn 1...

Very nice! I like those models and the color of the horses really helps to better define the models of the riders. Very nice painting. And the warg riders are really a dynamic bunch of models as well. This is getting more and more interesting.

Another great collaberation from the pair of you.

It is always an inspirational pleasure to see the breathless enthusiasm the two of you bring to your projects. The Riders are a FINE LOOKING Troop...GREAT brushwork & basing. VERY WELL DONE!

Dunno.. just the way I does it.
I don't care for GW bases normally. And I usually give the edges a bit of flock as well... but this time I thought I'd keep it in line with janner's stuff.

:-* :-* more lovely painting jobs!! Waiting for a family picture!!

Last time we played janner brought all his beard and fielded this and that horror of Rohan. So in order to actually cause a casualty sooner or later I thought I better paint up a troll.

I have a couple of Ents. But I don't really know where to go from there. I like Radagast and Gandalf, but I also really like Isengard.

I have a couple of Ents. But I don't really know where to go from there. I like Radagast and Gandalf, but I also really like Isengard.
You could always build an army of Huorns. They're not in the film I know, but some evil tree men to sort out the Isengard army would be cool.
You could use old metal dryads from GW for them I think. And some other tree men.
-
What rulebook(s) would I need to start out?
-
What rulebook(s) would I need to start out?
I think Huorns would just use the regular ent rules which are... uhm bum... I actually don't know where they are these days. But we wouldn't use te Hobbit rules if we met up anyway, but rather the outdated (OOP) Strategy Battle Game.
So in essence you can just make a tree army and use radagast and gandalf with it and we'll sort it. We could even plagiarize doom hippie and make some of our own characters modelled on others.
-
The troll is fantastic.
I'm a big fan of the kit and all the options it provides.

Oh, nice Troll Dr :-*

Yep, agreed! That troll looks really good. I like what you did with its armor and the skin tone you used. Nice one, Dr.V

Thank you sir Doom of All Hippies. I am really tempted into trying out a setting change like the one you have used in your campaign. I'm thinking something about a bastion of Isengard forces that have somehow missed the destruction of Isengard and regrouped after the War of The Ring.
Maybe they have fled to the south to ally with a king of men down there or something.
-
Trolls look great! I love your use of Metallic Metals. I've never been a NMM fan. Glad to see I'm not alone. ;)

Thanks mate. Yeah there was a time where Jakob Nielsen (a Danish Golden demon winner) ruled the world of painting here in Denmark. He used metallicas. He still does much and I must say the tones of metallics just work so much better for me than the 'one angle only' NMM. :D
But in essence it's a question of taste. De gustibus non disputantum est. lol

Why not? That's the beauty of the setting in Middle-Earth. You can introduce some very own elements as long as you keep within a reasonable logic. I still very strongly draw inspiration from our (still ongoing) rpg campaign in Middle-Earth. Actually a friend of mine managed to integrate the AD&D Ravenlof setting into Midlle-Earth and actually managed to make me think "wow, this really fits in a strange way". Of course it doesn't really but it wasn't totally wrong either. So go for it!

Those troll are impressive!! Flesh and metal beasts!!

Corr, top stuff, loving the Trolls, great painting :-*

It's a simple wash of black oil colour over you regular metallics as a base to work on. I wipe off some of the colour using a piece of cloth (an old t-shirt of unknown make).
I do a bit more wash/work/wash/work and then highlight in the end.
-

Aha!
Sounds very similar to the 'horsey oils' technique!
(But with a secret ingredient of 'unknown t-shirt').
Whereas:
I do a bit more wash/work/wash/work and then highlight in the end.
Sounds more like my own method of painting, but it is not a technique.
It is just because I keep buggering it up and having to redo it!
;)
You, my good Doctor, quite obviously do not!
:)

Also vikotnik and I both listen to the likes of

to motivate our painting
-
Well, with King U things are bound to turn out great. "They were kungin', they were fuin', they were fighting with King U." Love that band!
Now, turn up the volume a little more and get back to paintin' and then some playin' (+battlereport).
-
Bloody hell!
That sounds like the karaoke after BLAM!

I am unfamiliar with these "oils" of which you speak. Are they simply oil-based paint? Or a specialty item for our craft? And I love the metals too.

It can look great if done well.
Not a technique that all are happy with though.

Nothing like a theory that splits people... haha!
In all serious I didn't know there was a tutorial... I just bought some artists oil colour at a discount and tried mixing and modding.
Apparently you're supposed to use Windsor & Neutron as they have the best paint. Or pigmentation. Or both. Or neither!
Anyway I toyed around with my oilies a bit more and tried painting some more trolls with them:
Several things went wrong. Some went completely bonkers.
For instance I failed to appreciate that you cannot touch the miniatures for days after painting... so now they've got black marks all over where I've worn off the paint with my fondling.
Secondly (not related to oils) I wash a part of the left trolls leg that I thought was cloth... so when trying to make it look like the skin colour again it was impossible. Also down to my colourblindness. I was unable to find out what colour I had used to paint the leg with. (I used an acrylic base).
So now one of the legs is green. But what the heck. Trolls and hygiene.
Even more obvious tear off's. A large fingerprint is really all that's missing.
But yeah, well, it took like no time to do this as I could just continue working with the colours on the model. It was a bit difficult to control though...
A fight broke out with some dwarves that are also on my painting desk.
-
I think it looks bloody good on those trolls.
Most apt.
:-*
I half recognise them, who makes them?
-

These will be used as either Dunlendings or just some of the men from the hills mentioned in my Angmar sourcebook. :)
Not the best figures but I gave them a very quick basecolour, wash, drybrush treatment... I should probably do a bit more work on them but it will not be now.
I half recognise them, who makes them?
They are Mithrill Miniatures figures.
-
They ended up looking pretty good!
-
Cool. The hillmen of Rhudaur were related to the Dunlendings so a similar culture and appearance is very liekely. Love them. Are they really Mithril??? They look so much more three-dimensional than those old Mithril miniatures I remember. Or are we talking a different company here?
-

Do you know how the warlord figures scale with the GW LotR figures?
-
Do you know how the warlord figures scale with the GW LotR figures?
It all depends, really. But in essence they scale badly with the old miniscule plastic Rohirrim, less badly with the old plastic Gondor and just fine with the newer stuff (and a lot of the old metals).
Size consistency is somewhat lacking within the range as is. Janner could show a comparison that underlines this very effectively with his command group and rohan plastics.
I'm not going to use GW miniatures other than Mordor figures for my foray into Rhudaur gaming, so it is of little consequence to me. If I am to field the warlords as allies for Isengard I think it would still work as they're big fellas those Dunlendings. ;)
-
Great additions, sir.
They work perfectly as Dunlendings.
:-* 8) :-*
I am glad that you posted them, as I feel that I may need a couple myself in my Army of the Dead.
Cheers!
:D
They are Mithrill Miniatures figures.
Thanks for the ID on the Trolls.
THAT is a blast from the past.
It must be at least twenty years since I last clapped eyes on them.
No wonder I forgot.... ::)

That's true I suppose, as long as they don't end up looking like half-trolls.

Maybe I should check this thread more often. Kick ass troll painting, green leg nonewithstanding. I think it looks great. Gee, this thread is really going somewhere super cool. Great work! Still... when are you guys posting some battle pics???

A lot of nice minis in this thread.
I can't wait for some in game shots!

they look very comparable to me. Thanks for the comparison shots.

I've decided to turn the whole LOTR thing in to a small mini campaign (if only in my head) about the time when the Witch King invaded Rhudaur. The Hill men will probably be fighting alongside some Conquest Games Normans against the Orcs of the Witch King.
I'm going to buy some Conquest Games Normans or Perry Miniatures Mercenaries to use for it.

The Hill Men are Warlord Games... the trolls on the LAST page are the MIthrills I'm talking about. lol
However Mithril's last release are Dunlendings which would look cool along with yours...

So I bought the Conquest Games Normans... and... they're way too big!!!
But they might actually be cool as orcs!
Have a look here:

Imagine them with different shields and clubs. I think they'd be right cool as Mordor orcs.

Aren't orcs supposed to be smaller than men? Uruk-Hai are just about as big as a man and have straight arms and legs thus making them look a kittle more like humans (not in the face, no). So These normans could be Uruks.
