Please appreaciate that this is a compromise between paint and speed. I would much prefer to paint the cloth another colour than that of black, as it is dull to me and doesn't contrast the forces of Mordor proper.

What is the popular opinion on using the film miniatures but going with different schemes of colour application?

Check my 'Elf test model' thread from a while back (and keep an eye out for my VERY soon to appear Middle Earth project WIP thread) for loads of examples of almost totally ignoring the film/GW colour schemes and doing my own thing with Elves and Orcs...

My Elf army will have loads of converted Galadhrim models masquerading as High Elves and similarly, my Orc force will have lots of subtly converted Orcs, neither of which will adhere to anything other than what I feel they should look like colour-scheme wise...

IMHO, unless one is planning on attending GW LOTR tournaments, I see no reason to stick to anything other than what one wants out of one's minis...

Well, I think it is quite alright as long as you have some kind of idea why you take different colors. And what looks good in the movies need not automatically look good on models and vice versa. So take whatever color you like.

I tend to have certain attributes connected with colors (blue - noble, black (either) - noble or evil, red - agressive etc). So I tend to paint the models in whatever color I think is most appropriate from a character's point of view.

Well I wasn't thinking of doing the shields differently - they'd be black with a white tree.

But if I recall correctly - in the book, doesn't it say that the banners of Gondor are white? And are there even any mentions of what their warirrors look like?

The king's banner is the silver tree on black. The stewart of Gondor only has a simple white flag. Though the guard of the Citatdel still wears black and silver.
