Title: NEW! TBC's ADE Project: The Battle Bus DONE!
Post by: Too Bo Coo on 08 May 2014, 02:33:40 PM
Hi All,

I started a project last year in 20mm for THW's All Things Zombie.  I intend to use it for that game, but I have to say the game itself feels quite dry and it sapped some of my enthusiasm.  However, with the publication of AtDE I found new life for my gear.  As I'm finishing up with my SAGA armies, I'm trying to prioritize projects that are more finished than not.  This one fits that bill, and it's always great to paint in a new scale for a while.

My game will not be in the UK, but in the States and in my home town. :D  I'll restart my thread with what I have and what I'm working on.  To start things off, I based and rebased some minis that have been waiting for paint.  I'm still using 5 euro cent coins and with my new basing stamps, I've come up with some really great bits.  I think that work in terms of scale and theme.  But, what do you guys think?

I'm not familiar with the AtDE Setting, judging by the Building Structures, this Place hasn't been abandoned for a very long Time,a Year maybe  ??? Most of the Windows are still intact,so are the Roofs...
nonetheless the overall Look is very atmospheric, you can cleary see that something sinister must have happened here  8)

i like the Stamped Bases much better than the flocked ones  :-X

As I'm finishing up with my SAGA armies

what no Normans then?  :'(

Sounds like a fun idea you need some more scattered terrain and stuff theres quite a few open space despite the buildings and cars.

Cheers!  I have about 100 GW DF minis and maybe 20 buildings in 1/72. So I thought this would be a great project for my table.  I can always paint up my 28's for other people's tables :D

I have a bunch of stuff I picked up at Acheson Creations.  His 20mm barricade, barrels, drums, etc are usually 50 cents or so.  A super great deal! I painted up about 4 pieces so far.  But more to come.  I'm also going to build a small playground and park to fill the back and break up the total urban terrain.

Oh, the Normans will come.  But I still need to order them and the DF minis have been staring at me for about 6 months... :D  This will refresh me to go back to Dark Ages stuff.

I like to set my games either right after the 'incident' or a year or two later.  But I also can add moss, etc to 'age' the buildings a bit more.  I've also made the roof removable on the gas station, so that would also help add some age.  I have a bunch of old cars to make VERY weathered too.

Cheers Mate!  I've loved the DF minis since I was a kid and this is a great way to use the heck out of them. I'm looking forward to coming home from my research trip to start painting again.

I look forward to some 20mil zombie goodness with Mr Peabs!  Great board!  At least cars are easier to get to scale in 20!  28's are awkward for that...

WOW!  18-0-0 on my survey!  Thanks to those of you who chose to give feedback!  And to everyone who decided to take a gander at my project!

I'll be home this weekend and cant wait to get a brush in my hand again.  After 2 weeks of research in libraries, frankly I'm pooped!  I need a little 'me time' with my favorite projects!

This is great! I love seeing people take ADE and personalise it with their own Gangs and settings! Are you changing the distances/scale for 20mm?

Thanks so much Mates!  I bought in on the minis, so cant wait to get some paint on them too!

As to scaling, I'm going to see how ADE works in 20mm, with everything else the same.  If it doesnt seem to make sense I'll fiddle with the ranges a bit, but either way I'll post up my progress!

Thanks again for all the support!

I think the ranges shouldn't be too much of an issue...after all, so long as all figures stick to the same, it should work. if your Gangs move vertically at all though, you might find they can jump or climb rather a long way for their relative heights!  lol

Be sure to let us know how it goes!

This is the look I want to aspire towards for my ATDE -but a bit more overgrown and damp because I am in the UK

Ha!  The local Zombies did a real job on the joint...  Here is the first gang, my Home Gang.  I've stripped and rebased everything.  It took a 2 week soak in Simple Green and even the crazy glue became brittle.  I rebased using stamps and then small artifacts.  These 11 will get primer this week.

Really liking these. I always had a soft spot for Dark Future and 20mm allows for a big game in a smallish area.
Keep it coming.

Thanks Gentlemen!  I'm loving the minis, and have 80-90 based and primed!

I've put together the follwoing factions that have 8-15 members each, but most average 10.

The Home Gang (My Gang)
The Gully Gang (Former town scum, now wasteland scum)
The Palumbo Gang (A group from a little west of our territory.  There is an uneasy truce and cooperation between the Palumbo Gang and the Home Gang, the leaders knowing each other from before the Fall.)
The HaztMat Team (A team of yellowsuited people from Camp Downton Laboratory, a Department of Energy lab often call  the American Cern)
The Police (This is nothing more than the remenenats of the former Island Police and are now just another competing gang, just in many cases better armed)
The Military (They come in by Blackhawk, and they leave by Blackhawk.  They seem to be the least effected group, but have yet to make contact with any other group)
The Main Force Patrol (The remnants of the Island Highway Police, again, another competing gang with better access to kit)
The National Guard (Soldiers from the nearby National Guard Base have formed up and claimed an area of territory)
Foreign Troops (There is a contingent of foreign troops also moving in and out of the area, but as with the Military, no other group seems to have made contact with them)

This represents the regional players I have prepared for the area.  I have a city board getting finished, the rural board is done, borrowed from other games, and I plan to use Dwarven Forge product to make the cold war/post-9/11 bunkers that most groups have acquired

I'll have some more groups as well, just for variety and random encounters.

Thanks for all the support Mates!

Cheers Mate!

The body is from Aberrant
http://store.aberrantgames.com/abgwl021.html

And the head is a DF mini, the ponytail guy in a suit.

The Aberrant mini is not so hot.  the head was just awful, and the body is quite...flat.  So if you look at him sideways, he's rather slim.  But I reposed as much as I could, and then added the better head.

Overall, I'm happy with the finished product, but I do need to do some touchups....

I think he's great and better for the new head. I recognised the head from the pony-tailed suit guy - he was my favourite sanctioned op back in the day. Shame I traded all my DF miniatures for Citadel Traveller 15s a few years before RAFM rereleased them. >:(

Great collection by the way! :D

Thanks!  I really like them myself.  IMHO they are among the very best lines ever produced by Citadel.  Every mini has character, is very well sculpted and there is a great variety.  I've been eager to get a good basing solution for them and a game to play.  Although its hard to see, the bases are quite sculpted with a street and sidewalk motif. I purposely kept is dark, and dusty with pigments.

Once I get 8 minis for each team i'm going to try and play this at my club.  looking forward to posting AAR's!

If I had to choose, and there are some great mini lines, the DF minis are among my most favorite.  I feel lucky as an expat that I have access to the multitude that seem to be in the UK and are occasionally put up for sale without paying a fortune to ship overseas!

Next addition to the Gully Gang, The Grafer.  The Grafer is the Gully Gang's flamethrower operator, but the 'flamethrower' is as dangerous to use as it is to be hit with.  The Gully's managed to get something to work, but this rusty steel, copper, and brass contraption looks as if it'll burst and immolate The Grafer any second....not a real loss to Humanity's future in any event.

Without further delay...

I'll say.  :o

I'm very happy with the purchase!  I also got some nice little details you can see in the final product :D.  I always like those little things people notice when its one the table.  Right now I I glued the walls down and used GS to fill the seams to make it look a bit more contiguous.  I think the paint will hide a lot of the prefab.  I was going to fill in some of the miscast areas but to be honest, they add some odd rotted PA charm!  I think this will be finished by Sunday.

You make me want to stock up on hot wheels (easy to get in the US) and DF (very hard to get in the US) but I don't know how I'll get figures.
Title: Re: NEW! TBC's Acorss the Dead Earth Project: Waiting for GS to dry.... the Car Lot

My advice? Skip hot wheels except for only true mid sized cars, they come out to the correct scale. Smaller cars like a mini from hw works great for 28mm, and a truck for 15mm. For other cars, better to scale, green light is good, had a, and a few others. All cheap and easy to get in the states. For the minis, I'd hit evil bay and look for a deal/lot. Or you can buy from a company like Elhiem. I'd enjoy to seeing your projects too!

I'm in the middle of a 28mm Victorian Zombie Apocalypse right now so a project like this would be down the line. I do have a number of the Westwind 28mm Roadkill figures and a number of 1/43 toy Hummers & trucks so I'd go with that scale.

Thanks for the helpful comments folks, not to mention pushing me into yet another project, I've taken stock I have 2 duce and a half 1/72 scale trucks to try 20mm with. On the 28mm front I have 4 1/43 humvees, a UPS truck, 2 1/50 cars and 20 figures from the Westwind Roadkill line, Heresy trench coat gangers and assorted Hasselfree adventurers. I'll be doing this in 28mm.

The ONLY downside on 28mm is the commensurate size of the table...  I LOVE 28's topaint up, but with limited flat space, I decided to get my 20's started fist.  I also have about 160 zeds in 20mm waiting in the wings!  (And prob 300 in 28's)

Whatever you end up doing, it'll be fun to see it once it gets going.  Thanks for all the nice comments Mates!

Thanks guys!  It's an Ainsty Castings dumpster, you get 2!  I'm certain they're 28mm, but things like dumpsters, cargo containers, garbage skips and such come in a variety of sizes so they dont look bad in 20mm.  Most of the other stuff I use JR Innovative Design HO scale.  I'm finishing up some lead junk yard debris from them, they look great for the 20mm.

The patina is about 4 levels of rust pigmentation, and 3 of dirt.  Especially for PA stuff, pigments make all the difference when you want something to look old and dirty.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Thanks Mate!

I have to say, doing the decals on the container was a bloody pain!  There were so many deep ridges that as I got one area set and tried another, the first part would pulland bubble. I ended up making 8 bars to fit into the slots to press them all in at once.  Since it's PA I'm fine with a little decal damage.  but man, this took me a while to figure out....
Title: Re: NEW! TBC's Acorss the Dead Earth Project: More Gully Gangers Finished!
Post by: Too Bo Coo on 16 October 2014, 05:18:24 PM
Ok, finally had some time to finish a couple of Gully Gangers that I've been working on.

First up is Opatovski, Marky was a notorious drug abuser and pusher before the Fall, after it all went to hell no one who knew him would trust him enough to bring him in their group.  Poor Marky's life of poor choices left him without any when the Fall occurred, and the only people who would take him in were the Gully's.  But even that menagerie of human garbage looks at Marky as their 'weak link'....

I give you , Marky

Next is a true Gully Ganger, trouble before the Fall, a nightmare after, Lar's Son, Gregg.  His 'friends' often just call him LSG.  Most of the rest of us who knew him, just call him what we always did, SOB.  It all works...

I like how you've based them with rubble and signage, that's a nice subtle touch.

Poor Marky, I hope he gets good dice rolls to make up for it.

Played around last night with a quick project.  I added my Not Max mini Rik a few weeks ago.  What kind of not-Max would Rik be without his Dog?  So, I give you Dog.

(Yes, he's got this very very white top coat, but I included a pic of the breed so that you can see my 'cartoonyness' is part of how the breed looks.  Very interesting looking doggie!)

Yep, all's fine now. Dunno if it's got anything to do with it, but early this morning (8-9 hrs ago) I found lots of sites inaccessible (DNS server problem)
Couldn't reach google, bing (even though I hate that one), youtube, facebook, photobucket, bing, newssites...

Thanks Mate!  The other Home Ganger Julian, aiming the rifle, is the other trade show mini.  I noticed when I was inventorying my collection.

I'm very happy how the gangs have come together.  I have at least 10 minis per gang ready to paint, but I think I'll paint up 8 of each gang until I get at least 4 or 5 gangs done.  Next up are the police... :D

The elephant stampede looks to be an interesting in game event though! ;) Not sure how survivable a Jumanji style stampede would be in postapocalyptia. :D

My kitchen curtain :D

Cheers Mate!  To 'fatten it up' I also have a warehouse in the works and a bunch of woods.  I also want to build a green house.  To be 100% honest, I must have 10-12 more buildings....

:D I thought you just had a very fashionable 'colonial' games room.  ;) But it is good to see that the spray primer is close at hand in the house. It must be good for spraying bugs? Glue the suckers together in mid flight!  lol Perhaps the perfect BloatFlies with a bit of paperclip up them ;D.*

Ok, here is the debut of my third 'gang', no one knows much about them, except that everyone in the area thinks they are from the old Department of Energy Lab a few miles from Old Shoreham. Everyone in the area just call them The Lab People.  Everyone also knows that when the Lab People are out, they are looking to kidnap people.....for what, no one seems to know.

Cheers Matt!  The Fountain is from Thomillion as a 'second', got it for a tenner.  Works perfectly with the 28mm Civil War mini as the statue.  I also wanted to add terrain that was not necessarily a building again to break up los but not totally.

Thanks!  It's been an idea creeping around in the back of my mind for a year or so.  I've been slowly gathering the parts and when I got the fountain for a tenner, I was ready to start.  I have to admit, I took a bolt cutter to the fountain to make damage, it was the only time I really got nervous...  I was praying it wouldnt shatter....  As a precaution I glued it down first so if it cracked, it'd more or less stay in one piece. But it broke very well, a testament to the quality of Thomillion....  Im home working on my phd all weekend, but this will be a nice distraction in the evening....
The 'fire' was an afterthought and I'm very happy with that last detail!

Is that the statues head the opposite side of the piece?

Beautiful scenery though. Brilliant painting. c:

It sure is!  I tried to imagine how the damage to the statue would be if the rotors hit it, then I took some artistic license.... :D  I also spread some 'body parts', the co-pilot who crawled out as well as a a rat in there.  It's fun to put little interesting details.

I also wanted to play around with the scenery I've already built.

That's a terrific terrain piece.  The flames and smoke really grab the eye (when not entirely hypnotised by the marching elephants) and pull it down to see the details.

The fire was a bit of a chore, but not too bad.  The tea light was too big for the chopper, so i found a tube that was sort of the same opaquity as the 'flame' on the tea light.  I tried to crazy glue the bulb to the inside of the tube, but the type of plastic made that impossible.  So I hot glued the bulb into the tube's stopper and ran the wires through it to the outside.  But then no light hit the inside of the chopper, and that looked weird  So I did a double battery and glued a second bulb to the bottom.  Not perfect, but it works! :D

Something Bad Went Down in Old Shoreham

Scuffle on Main Street

The day was warm for November.  Perfect weather for scavenging.  Clear, bright and tolerable temperatures….. of course that means we weren’t the only ones out shopping….

(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham01_zpsb9af7a34.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham01_zpsb9af7a34.jpg.html)

(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham02_zpsd4fb7927.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham02_zpsd4fb7927.jpg.html)

By the time we got to Main Street our Scout Lisa started getting that twitchy look she gets when she sense people are near.  I have no idea what she did before everything went to hell, but if she wasn’t in the military, it was a great loss to the country!

“Shall I run ahead a bit?” She asks over her shoulder?

In a low voice I can only tell her quick enough, “No further than the container!”  Which seemed to be unnecessary as she’d do as she thought best….which was to stop at the container.  Oh, heavy is the crown… I think to myself as I start moving up to the cars, Jules our Sniper not far behind me.

From my right Lisa yells out to someone I can’t exactly see, “Hey numbnuts!  Drop our gear!”

Jules and I make it to the cars ahead where more gear lay.  In the next few seconds our Doc sneaks up to the container as well and Phlug our Assaulter decided to stay put and watch for a moment.  Ok, chance to take a breath before all hell breaks loose….

(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham03_zps29c8e176.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham03_zps29c8e176.jpg.html)

They say that time after the Fall is often 6 months of boredom for every 6 minutes of hell…  I’m thinking around here the ratio is more like a few weeks to every half hour…  That thought no sooner goes through my mind before it all begins.  All of the sudden I hear feet from all directions ahead.  First is what can only be described as a giant with some homemade helmet and worse, what looks like a jury rigged flamethrower!

Quick on his heels is a mowhawked punk gun in hand.  He gets to the other car and leans down to pick something up.  “Sonnava-bitch…he’s got our gear….” I hear Jules hiss.  At that I motion for Jules to take the Big Guy and I take aim with my shotgun on Mowhawk Boy.  And as quick as lighting, both drop as I see what can only be their leader lob a freakin grenade at us!  Who are these guys?!?!

With that, the grenade bounces off the car I’m using for cover as I watch it fly towards where Jules shot the Big Guy with the flamerthrower… and it goes off with a wet explosion. Poor Mr Flamethrower Guy….

More shots go off to my right as the target of Lisa’s Taunt took a shot from Phlug’s assault rifle in the chest.

(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/eaodak/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham04_zps4c7f0356.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/eaodak/media/SomethingBadWentDowninOldShoreham04_zps4c7f0356.jpg.html)

Just a few seconds for a breath and the fire starts again!  More feet cming from the front and the right and I see another figure run up to my felled target and leans down… Jules looks over to me asking, “You reckon that’s their Doc? Or another wise guy stealing our gear??”

With a quick, “Does it matter?”  I unload my shotgun again sending their ‘Doc’ down as well.

Lisa dispatches her target and grabs the loot he was trying to take ahead of us while Phlug moves up to me and takes positon.  Jules grabs his sniper rifle and starts bolting ahead looking for cover and takes aim to our right…. A moment later I hear his rifle crack out a shot to a triumphant, “I think I just tagged their leader!”

Wheeehew…. The Home Gang got REAL lucky today.  We took down all the baddies without even a scratch….  They’ll never believe this when we get home!

Thanks Mates!  I must say, I think my success was more do to killer rolls, pun intended, than my stellar strategy.... :D But it was super fun and the cards added a great layer of unknown!

I should add, we played with no rare items and I have no skills...  Cant wait to play again! Jasper's looking for 20mm minis to make his own gang, so I sent him to Elhiem :D

Jep, looking at the russina NBC figures:

Although this also looks nice (dark future look alikes)

But I haven't decided yet, so other suggestions on 20mm post-apoc mini's are welcome.

You can also flex your artistic legs and just buy some 1/72 scale modern plastics and convert them.  If you go 'soft plastic' with the cheapest ones, the paint will come off quite often so you may want to avoid those.  But you can look at 1/72 hard plastic minis if there are any available.

Thanks Mates, these are among my favorites of the DF line, such character to them, yet so simple as well.

The 'Lab People' are based on a real Dept of Energy facility a few miles from where I grew up, they call it the American Cern, which I think is filled with possibilities for a PA game.  I think they look great with the Soviet NBC troops as their 'heavy muscle' arm. I should have them up by the end of the week :D

Coincidentally,  I just rewatched Mad Max yesterday while painting up some minis, so I remember who the Goose is. Funny, I always forget the first half of that movie, and how it's much more dystopian than it is post-apocalyptic...

At any rate Goose is looking good, let's hope he doesn't run across any pyromaniacs.  ;)

I agree....  It was a compromise between trying to contrast with the 'chrome' pipe and engine, and getting it the silver it should have been.....  Oh well! :D  But I think I'll add some dark grey to make the MFP lettering more contrasted.  I'll also add some gold to the emblem decal as well.  Otherwise, I'm pretty happy overall :D

Painting and basing are great (as usual).

And, though I know it isn't your fault and is me being a pain in the booty, I don't like the way the one guy holds the RPG thing, it would be way too front heavy to aim it long enough to get a good sight picture.  How hard is it for sculptors to understand a bit about ergonomics and weapon design?

And, though I know it isn't your fault and is me being a pain in the booty, I don't like the way the one guy holds the RPG thing, it would be way too front heavy to aim it long enough to get a good sight picture.  How hard is it for sculptors to understand a bit about ergonomics and weapon design?

 :D

Thanks Mate!  I agree, the pose does look a little odd.  There are a couple more in the line that look odd, but overall I'm very happy with the diversity in the small line.

These are going to be it for me until January when I get back from my holidays!

All in all, I'm very pleased with how it turned out. Once I get settled I'll finish my MFP police squad of yellow striped cars.

I actually think that between 15 - 20 and 28mm, 20 is pretty easy to paint.  In many ways being almost a third smaller than 28 it requires less detailed painting and my eyes hurt too much for the level of detail I like on 15's....  I also use a magnifier for the smallest bits... :P

Really looking forwards to seeing the paint on those armor plates, the green-stuff is a bit more textured then splasticard so it should come out nice and grungy. Or are you going to paint it yellow?

Cheers!  I agree the GS mold really gives a 'beat up' look I like without extra work.  It was originally a tour bus, so probably not yellow.  I plan to do the plates as a patchwork of colors to mix it up a bit.  With proper nicks and dings to reflect wear.
