Dave, Mila etal,
What sort of craft would you all envision Captain Wolf sailing in? Would it be a paddle steamer of some sort or a sea going vessel with sails and steam?
Nick
-
I'd say some sort of small tramp freighter would fit the bill.
-
well, the person he is an avatar of used to have a sailing schooner
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNB8bf3zzxI
-
He's not the sort to get attached to a boat or ship, I don't think. He's in something different in every adventure, or without one at all most of the time.
Tramp steamer, paddle-wheel steamer, Melanesian outrigger, Kaiserliche Marine U-Boat, you name it...
I think I like this one best, though...

Yep, exactly what I was thinking of, a small, two masted schooner. With a surprise or two hidden aboard.

Must confess I've read not a word about the chap, was he at all air-minded?
For some reason his pictures, & minis, give a definite "anti-aero" vibe...
This perspicacity has also stood me in good stead with the ladies all these years...

Anti-aero? No, I wouldn't say so, not especially...

Um, er... Maybe a bit.
Maybe, maybe... But one thing I'm sure of is that all this staring up into the air is giving me a stiff neck. In this story I haven't done anything but.

on the other hand...

I finally have a good use for my Minimi steamer!

Not to find it in the attic, dust it off and paint it...
-
Yes, Corto's had all sorts of ships. Though it seems to me he's Captaining a plain old freighter more often than not.
-
Well, putting my skills to work, I built a 12" long two masted schooner for him to captain, I'll post a link to pictures when its painted. A freighter, hmmn.
-
....A freighter, hmmn.
That's a thought I have to forcefully keep putting aside.
My tramp freighter dreams keep becoming gaming table sized.
One day soon I keep telling myself.
-
I figure somewhere around 14" long is as big as a tabletop ship can be.
-
A ship being large really isn't problematic, so long as it has plenty of good playable areas on it. Michi's Doreen is of course a great example, but lots of other models have multiple levels, plenty of cover, interesting structures, and often partially accessible interiors.
-
So far we know Wolf has a tramp steamer, called the Vento. But I'm sure he has others, or at least access to others.
THANKS for all the inspiration and ideas! :-* :-*

Think bigger - the tramp steamer as the table!
-
This is a possible schooner! If you want to do some close up measurements to build a model, you can always hire it to explore the Gulf of Siam. I am very tempted but I need to buy the Corto Maltese cap first!

-
Here's one I was hoping to get, but sadly alas outbid. :'( That's the seller's hand and the item photo.)
I would have removed the keel and cleared the deck and made her into a schooner for tabletop.
-
Pity you missed that one, it looks good.

I've got these, but that one would have been the biggest yet. :)

Or the Sirius?
-
That Dhow is nameless in the book. The Sirius is a freighter (usually captained by Captain Chester, but sometimes loaned to Captain Haddock):

:)
-
obviously, Captain Wolf bears only a physical resemblence to the other sailor, but this is not unheard of ;)
maybe his other name is Shevket
-
maybe his other name is Shevket
lol You devil!
-
Think bigger - the tramp steamer as the table!
That's the plan. ;)
The Sirius would be just about right.
But I would have to square off the bow to give it that pre WW2 look.
-
FramFramson - my post was two suggestions ;), one pictorial, but I should've posted that image of the Sirius that Amalric posted above a well.

Huh, so it's a trawler and not a tramp freighter. Interesting.
Still dead sexy though!
(Am I allowed to say that about a work ship?)
-
I don't see why a fishing trawler (type of hull configuration) cannot be a tramp steamer (type the shipping contract works). Trawlers were comissioned as minesweepers in WW2. Of course it would have to be cleared of the fish stench first.....

wasn't someone chucking out "nobel-prizes for scratchbuilding"? why did this one not get one?
totally amazing! thank You for bringing it up! it has totally slipped under my radar. were there any games?

No reason at all - she'd work perfectly fine as a tramp.
-
Well I received my first Corto Maltese book in the mail today, thank you ladies and gentlemen for introducing me to some new scoundrels :)
-
I just built a dhow for my Corto, hope to get it painted till tomorrow... ::)

Pretty good dude. :D

Beautiful job on the dhow.

Turbo,
That is great. Coffee stirrers over poster board?

Wonderful! :-*

Coffee stirrers over cereal packaging! ;)
It's the same system I already used for my sampans!

That dhow is amazing....is there a tutorial somewhere? In the immortal words of the kid in all of us: "I want one!"

Hi Mike, sorry, not a real tutorial, but there are some more pics of the sampans I already built the same way and even a short text here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51214.60 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51214.60)

I am now thinking of resurrecting my tramp steamer for my new interest in pulp games...

That made me think of another of my unfinished projects, my river boat. Just needs a bit of work on the superstructure really! lol

I think mine might be larger than yours !!!
:D :D :D
-
It's not all about the size, boys! ;)
Now get back and finish them!

Is that a surf board?
-
Is that a surf board?
No Mila, 'tis but an optical illusion.
That's a 6mm, figure, on a cardboard cut-out, atop a dollhouse table, with a Matchbox car behind it.
The rest is Photoshop.
Trompe-l'œil
It's all quite simple really, once you know his tricks.
Valerik
"fool me once..."

nah, his wife bought a new ironing board, so he had a spare....

Is that a surf board?
We'll need some big waves! lol
with a Matchbox car behind it
You're right about that! ;)
his wife bought a new ironing board, so he had a spare....
Now there's a thought for the hull of a tramp steamer! :o
-
You're going to need a bigger
boat pond. :D
-

What a twisted brilliant left handed idea!!
Now there's a thought for the hull of a tramp steamer!
Once again I find myself, & uncomfortably so, in agreement, GASP!!, with M L Snapwidget...
While it IS metal, I have a tabletop (snicker) ironing board that is 29.5" long & 12" wide.
AND just the proper shape too...
Even if I merely used it as a template for a 1x12" shelfboard, which would doubtless be easier to work, tis a SUPERB idea!!

Very true! lol

Sir, I regret to inform you that one of our own has already outdone you (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=64776.0).

not in size and the project is stalling
of course it has the highest probability of getting finished of course, but the author is in a league of his own...

I have to agree with you on both counts there, the man is undoubtedly a genius!

I've just found your post on building a steamer,It seems were working on the same idea just not the same size lol
have a look at the great war section,I've just made a small ship for nothing to help Bryan out .take a look at his. small ship/boat post.
hope this helps,

That is really nice work.
-
Thank you,it was made just to talk Bryan, through making a ship,I'm not claiming to have invented the wheel, just helping to take short cuts on the learning curve of scratch building.
Also how making your superstructers slot in stops you model being a one trick pony.
Mark
-
now that's an interesting concept of interchangeability.....
-
Tinshed thats a beautiful ship!

Thanks,l'm going to have a crack at the Al Capone speed boat next.Well as soon as finished an armoured car I need done, and gone.It sits on my desk and hates me.

Thats a little too much like hard work.
I don't have the time or the love for subject,or the space for that matter.
The pictures you posted of the Capone boat,Just seemed like fast and simple afternoons work, for when I need a break from sculpting.
