Title: Space Hulk - Somewhere on Terra, 39000 A.D.- upd 22.05, p.14
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on 13 December 2014, 02:51:43 PM
I'm not that into 40K gaming having played only a few real 40K games in my life but I always liked the story behind the game. Sure, it's a mix of everything and it's nothing really new there, much of the stuff, many of the ideas are taken from human history, but that's my point here, that makes the background story so exciting for me. As Voltaire said "Originality is nothing but judicious imitation".

This is going to be the log of my painted 40K miniatures. Over the years I've collected lots of them, with thematic priority on the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition. Btw, thanks to all LAFers who has helped me (via Bazaar) to close some gaps in my collection, much appreciated, guys!

Not everything I'm going to post is newly painted. I've painted a dozen of the miniatures over the last two years but never got around to basing and photographing them. Let's hope this is going to change now.

Okay, enough of words, here comes the first miniature from the Holy Mountain of Prof's 40k-Madness:

Anna Astragova, The imperial Inquisitor.

It's a repaint, I've bought the mini on the Bazaar from a LAFer with an older painting on it and repainted it completely, though taking some colour ideas from my predessecor. The base is quite rusty, that’s the influence of Blanchitsu, displaying in the last issue of Warhammer Visions a beautiful 40K board “The Sump”, where everything looks that rusty.

Is she a 40k 28mm or a Inquisitor 54mm?

Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks, guys!

40k 28mm Witch Hunter. Ordo Hereticus. Lovely paint job.

Yes that's she. Still need to get the other two similar ladies with different guns.

The dark backgrounds really work a treat  :)

Yep. I'm quite happy with the background darkness as well. After all the blue&white years :) Making fotos is so much easier as you don't need so much light and the colors stay the same.

As with so much 40K, this really has possibilities for VSF; she's very steampunk without the decolletage.  ;)

Rates high on my 'she who must be obeyed' meter.

Agree. Btw, the design of her is based on a drawing by John Blanche and his artwork features strong steam-punkish motifs often.

:o

Surely a thread worth following for, the first treat is free, so what do we have to see the rest of the painted ones? :)

Not much, just keep visiting that thread :)

And the next one!

Uriah Jacobus, the Protector of the Faith, a missionary of the Ecclesiarchy

sculpted by Brian Nelson for the Adepta Sororitas, also known as the Sisters of Battle, army many years ago and is still one of the most impressive figures ever made by GW, at least in my humble opinion. It's the second time I've panted this figure, the first one was a converted version for my Mordheim gang, painted back in 2001 (you can see him here - link (http://witchhunter.net/galerie_hexenjaeger_12.html)). I know I wasn't very inventive chhosing his colours, but I just couldn't think of him wearing a green or blue robe.

The classical motif, a preaching guy with a chain saw. Very convincing sometimes :)

older painting job, I've posted it already on LAF years ago on some forgotten thread, this is just to get the complete gang to one thread.

I dare say that "modern figures" is a relative term in this context - some of those figures must have been released a decade or even longer ago - didn't the Uriah Jacobus figure come out with the first Sisters Codex in 1997/8?

Lovely brushwork, as usual.

That's correct but talking about sculpting style of Jacobus or others in this thread , I think they belong rather to the modern school, or early modern school if you want :) There is definitely a big lap between the original Rogue Trader stuff and e.g. Sororitas.

What's your rust recipe for the ground work?

First layer with the Citedel Technical "Agrellan Earth", afterwards mix of Vallejo Wash for Rust Effects and Citadel technical Ryza Rust. The greenish spots are made with Citadel technical Nurgle's Rot.

Pontius 1609, the Arco-Flagellant

conversion from a VOR: The Maelstrom figure (one of the Neo-Soviet cyclops, I believe), added some small details from various plastic kits or made by green stuff and a LAM gas mask. Unfortunately the photo of the unpainted version got lost.

I guess some pipes and tubes ans further details would have improve his look but at that time I got caught by other "wonderful" ideas for other minis and I've stopped here. Anyway, at least I've got him painted.

Really great work. Love them all, though it's another example of GW inexplicably making women with men's faces.  I've got a stash of these kind of inquisitorial figures that I've been meaning to paint up for years. These kind of figs represent for me the 40k grimdark feel.

Really great work. Love them all, though it's another example of GW inexplicably making women with men's faces.

On this group shot, indeed, her face looks like a men's face. That's actually due to disadvantageous perspective and probably due to my insufficient painting skills :)

That's my point too, he's kind of a symbol!

Yeah - bright and grimy. Which I imagine takes skill to achieve.

Sometimes I'd like to paint more dirty and grimy and maybe I will do (or be able to do!) it at some point but it still didn't work quite without some brightness :)

I've been reading a book about the First Crusade a few days ago and had the idea of building a 40K Crusader character. Kind of a peasant crusader, wearing ragged clothing and being on pilgrimage. Had immediately to think of this female LAM post-apoc figure.

What do you think about her? Does it work? Does it need yet more details?

She looks jolly good, will fit in very well when based and painted to suit.

As for details, perhaps a purity seal on the shield? Maybe just a 'test fit' to see if you like the addition?

The "lady" crusader looks more than promising!

I echo Mason on the shield chipping plus maybe some additional real damage on it?

Oh, and that arco-mutie looks great as he is, too much of pipes and tubes would detach him too far from the "spirit" of the team and make him more suitable for some AM sect, IMHO.

Don't forget the purity walruses. Everything is bigger these days in 40k! ;)

Apart from that, nice pose and the scratches on the pauldron look quite good even now. You could also add some small pouches on the belt - I've got a ton of those going spare if you need them.

I've already tried it with a canteen, see the photo below. It seemed to be too much. I think a knife there would be appropriate for a pilgrim. Also I've decided to remove the plasma gun and going with something more conventional.

As for something more conventional, maybe a stubgun? Not used as much by infantry as a laspistol, but in the grim side of the peasant idea, a stubgun would be easier to get a hold of :)

A canteen would be fine, just not the uber-canteen that comes with IG.  Do you have access to any canteens or pouches from historical minis.  The addition of a stub or auto pistol would be good.

If you're located in the USA, I could send you a canteen and and a RT/2nd edition plastic autopistol.  If you're in the UK, I'll do it for the cost of shipping.

Good suggestions with the replacement of plasma pistol, stub gun indeed fits her better. And that GW canteen is way too big. Have you tried a German WW2 era gas mask container thingy there instead, 1/48 scale size should be better than 1/35 one.
If you are in need of pouches and bits, I have lots of spare from Eisenkern troopers, happy to send you after Xmas hopis a pile of them :)

Thank you for the kind offer but I'm in Germany and I think I've got enough stuff to get her armed to the teeth :)

Though I think

Good suggestions with the replacement of plasma pistol, stub gun indeed fits her better. And that GW canteen is way too big. Have you tried a German WW2 era gas mask container thingy there instead, 1/48 scale size should be better than 1/35 one.
If you are in need of pouches and bits, I have lots of spare from Eisenkern troopers, happy to send you after Xmas hopis a pile of them :)

Not necessary at the moment but many thanks, kind of you :) But the idea with the WW2 gas mask container is a good one, I will have a look at it.

Next Inquisitor, the famous Lord Coteaz. Never didn't like much the golden power armour of the official paint job and decided to go with the plain metal, more appropriate for a fanatic servant of the God Emperor.

Also I've slightly changed my recipe for red, it's a bit less bright. I wasn't unhappy with the brighter red, but I wanted to get some little differences between the gang of Astragova and Coteaz.

A valuable lesson I learned from I can't remember where is that the face and upper chest attract the most and strongest attention on a miniature. So it's worth putting extra attention into those areas, since most people will view your miniature as a whole as being painted with the skill used on just the face and chest, even if you took it easier elsewhere.

Another bad guy. Forgeworld. Sculpted by Mark Bedford. I was struggling with the color of the skin a little bit, taken originally some sort of pale greyish-green but it didn't work as it didn't do much difference compared to the clothes. Next one was a blueish tone which worked nicely but I'm going to devote my chaos troups to the only God and that's Nurgle so blue was out of question and I've decided to give him more greenish-brown or brownish-green skin. Perhaps not quite optimal but that will have to do it for now.

The Prof starts a thread about early 2000s, Inquisitorial 28mm models!  It must be Xmas!

I only just found this thread, its 100% right up my street :D

The original female Inquisitor and the Peasant Crusader are my favourites here so far I think, but the thread is jam packed with beautiful models.  Great work all over.

The Inquisitorial range released in 2003 (or so) for the Daemon and Witch Hunters books is one of the best 40k ranges ever in my opinion: they were instant classics upon release.  The range sums up the setting in miniature pretty much perfectly.  With the possible exception of the Adeptus Mechanicus, nothing says "40k" like Inquisitors do.

I am delighted to be able to watch your take on the subject over the next while :)

Are you gaming with these Prof?  I have been having lots of fun this year using Pulp Alley to game small Inquisitorial skirmishes.

Not yet, just collecting and painting. Still thinking about possible rules or settings. There are a few options like Necromunda, WH40K 2.ed, Inquisitor and so on. Admittedly, never thought of Pulp Alley as a possible rule set for that kind of stuff :)

I am a bit of a zealot about Pulp Alley at this point, so rather than yet again go on about how great I think it is I will just point you towards an inquisitor vs orks vs ratlings vs genestealer cult Pulp Alley game on a Deathworld (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/07/21/get-to-the-chopper-ohammerer-brocon-2014-pt1/) that my gaming group ran at a convention last summer.  Take a look if you are interested.

I did, very impressive! Lovely terrain, great figures and the game looks like a fun.

Need more peasants. Shlubs with high morale and poor combat ability.

Well, I also would like to get some more "peasants" for this crusade. Got some ideas regarding a few of the Bruegelburg miniatures.

The texture on the metal is outstanding. Beautiful work!  :-*

Thanks, David!

On the first day of the new year we want to point the way. A new conversion (almost finished) of a Nurgle preacher based on a Mordheim Nurgle carnival figure.

An acolyte today, a very lovely miniature, though I probably like all the miniatures reading books. And he's wearing glasses! An intellectual :)

He's supposed to support the efforts of Lord Coteaz on his crusade through the know and unknown world.

No, no names for everyone yet, not sure if I should and sometimes I'm just too lazy :)

Mechanicus stuff won't be appearing too soon here, still a lot of Inq and Renegades on the workbench.

I think so too, I acquired the range even though I didn't play 40k at the time. Actually I don't think I've played for over ten years... I've never painted them :(

Great job again Prof, I may have to break some of these figures out of storage.

After some days with cold and some work on other projects, I'm back here with some new painting. First one is a resin model from the Forge World, sculpted by Mark Bedford. It's a Exorcist (Hierophant). A cute little figure, that actually belongs to the retinue of the Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex, but here he's a part of the gang of Lord Coteaz

Also we have a Demon Host today, an older metal model:

and a new group shot:

and last but not least another bad guy for the Renegades, a Vox Caster:

Yes, the set has some nice stuff in it, the sword bearer and the astropath are very nice too. The Rex himself has about a million of details, I'm still struggling with painting him :)

Seconded, a lot of unique quirks, that's what I love on them.

The vox caster is from Renegate Militia Comman pack:

Yes, sure, some sort of a Renegade Ogryn and a heavy weapon team too.

The little robed fellow is a nice sculpt and well painted too :)

Well, I'm glad Forge World is still sculpting such stuff and not only another lot of Space Marines.

The new additions are very nice.  That Hector Rex retinue has been on my shopping list for ages now, I am going to have to pick it up some time soon.

The Renegades are turning out quite creepy looking.  I am very interested to see how they develop too, to see how you keep that horror vibe through them.

This is one of my very favourite threads here at the moment, fantastic stuff.

Another revival of another old thread. First my new Inquisitor the honorable Canis Majoris, the hero of at least six or seven galaxies and the destroyer of a number of evil cults. A top performer so to say :)

Next  performer is a new priest. I ahad no good idea for his name so he is just A Priest for the moment, attacking Renegades, some backup is behind him, another priest without name and a few sisters running over a small bridge (click on the picture to see the bigger version (http://www.backofbeyond.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/40k_inq_priests.jpg))

btw, it’s second time I’ve painted this guy, the first time I’ve converted him a bit for my Witch Hunter Mordheim gang, I still have the photo but unfortunately not the figure itself, I was stupid enough to sell it which is a shame, I really loved it .

And the last picture for today, some old friends, no new paint jobs, but a new scene, just something to look at (click on the picture to see the bigger version (http://www.backofbeyond.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/40K_Inquisitor_Anna_Astragova_11.jpg))

Title: The Galaxy Council - Somewhere on Terra, 39000 A.D.- upd 17.04
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on 17 April 2016, 08:57:35 PM
Last week at LPL I've brought a change into my usual choice of themes and tried it with a sci-fi setting. Over the years I've collected a lot of various sci-fi miniatures and LPL seemed to me to be a nice opportunity to get painted at least some of them. The beginning of the idea behind the scene were these eggs..

As you can see on the base of them, they have their origin in 2008, being special miniatures for Do Or Dice convention. Unfortunately I didn't participate it being on a travel in a country far far away but my good friend Björn gave them to me afterward. Some weeks ago I've found them looking for ideas through my boxes and I've decided to use them for a of the LPL scenes. The next miniature I've thought of, was the traveling trader from Colony 87 first Kickstarter that I wanted to use as some sort of scientist. The guy found the eggs on some distant planet and brought them into the civilisation ..you know, scientific curiosity...At this point I had my idea for the scene, a Galaxy Council! I mean, these eggs..the representative of all races of the galaxy..that really is going to end very badly..

Anyway, let's have some pictures with manufacture references and first the Colony 87 miniatures, some of the best sci-fi miniatures out there. From left to right - travelling trader, female noble, noble, emmissary of the alien Amphiran race. There were two more miniatures inthe first Colony 87 wave, they will be making their appearance on these pages next week.

Now let's have some Aliens (sorry, Xenos..). From left to right, the first one is from Black Scorpion, meanwhile OOP I believe, the second guy is the Pactmaster of Katapesh from Reaper and the third one is the Andromedan Vizier by Reaper as well

More Aliens. Alpha Forge Hydrissian Noble, Ollies Armies Psychic Scrunt and the old Citadel Genestealer Magus

Now some pure 40K stuff. GW Imperial Advisor (Master of Ordinance), and two GW Imperial Astropaths

More 40K. GW Skullz Adeptus Mechanicus Servitor, GW Inquisitor Acolyte, GW Witchhunter Crusader

That makes a total of 18 newly painted figures in my collection :) Now finally some close-ups of the scene:

And now my another LPL entry with some additional pictures

The fugures were as usual a messy mix of manifacturers with a strong rate of Alpha Forge figures (being OOP as well). From left to right - Colony 87 porter Kay Dee; Colony 87 Wandering Alexei, on a pilgrimage between the  stars;  Reaper 50328 Space Henchman; two Alpha Forge Salvage Crewmen

Imperial Battle Robot made by a fellow on Facebook, GW Skullz Adeptus Mechanicus Servitor, another Imperial Battle Robot.

three of the Alpha Forge droids (OOP as well)

The rest of the figures on the picture were painted years ago and you can see some close-ups of them there on my old blog witchhunter.net - Alpha Forge Salvage Crew (http://witchhunter.net/gallery_salvage_crew.html)

yup it is - I stumbled across mine in the loft a few weeks ago - I'd completely forgotten I'd bought it.

It's rather depressing that there are probably as many minis in this one scene as I painted in the whole of last year, and these are so much better than mine it's just not fair  :'(

With your sensitive choice of colours you achieve a beautiful mood in the overall shot.

Ganz großes Kino, if the others forgive me the german phrase, as I know no english phrase that comes near it.
