It begins.
I'm starting to show the miniatures that we've been designing for Osprey's new Fantasy Wargame Frostgrave on Facebook. Frostgrave is out in July, and we've 20 different Wizards made already. We're going to show one a day on Facebook, starting with the Enchanter by Mark Copplestone.
The Frostgrave wizards are 28mm sized, unpainted metal miniatures.
-
When I saw this guy I thought "Vainamoenin" and "Kalevala". Well done. :o
-
Enchanting :D
-
Well now, there's just no way to buy that and not paint it as Santa.

Heavy metal Santa!
-
Yay! Even better than I expected. I hope Copplestone will do more for North Star

Mark has done 5 more figures so far. The others who are involved are Mike Owen, Mark Sims, Nick Collier and Bob Naismith. Richard Kemp and Giorgio Bassani have commissions in their hands for some of the next set of figures for Frostgrave as well as the first five. It's a real collective effort.
-
Lookin' good!

Mike Owen's Summoner figure, painted by Kev Dallimore.

The Wizards come from all over the World to loot Frostgrave, but they recruit followers locally. That is why we're releasing a box of plastic Frostgrave soldiers, all the Wizards will use the same henchmen. The box set allows you to arm your followers as you want, as there are hundreds of different head/ arm/ weapon combinations. I need to work it out mathematically. There's also extra packs/ rope/ lanterns etc to kit your henchmen out with.
-
The minis are GORGEOUS...BEAUTIFULLY sculpted & painted. The multipart Barbarians sound like something I would be interested in for conversions if nothing else. GOOD LUCK with the project!
-
Sounds interesting!
-
Looking good. :D
-
I'm with Dr. Mathias on this one - I really like the sound of this game, and the two wizard miniatures so far are excellent. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Had a read of the description.
Fast, campaign or casual, low model count, d20 based.
Seems like it could be a great system! I've been wanting a nice fantasy system to get into but nothing fits the bill, this could be the one!
-
Whilst those wizards are exceptionally lovely, it's the henchmen spruces I'm most excited about seeing! Are we likely to be able to get a sneaky peek at Salute?

Plus one on that comment!
-
Indeed, any time plastic figures are announced by anyone I'm very curious to see the outcome.
-
Yes, planning to have the tooling figures on display on the Osprey stand at Salute, along with Kev's painted Wizards and Henchmen.
-
I am really looking forward to this being released. It sounds very much like the rules I have been looking/waiting for.

I am Also getting increasingly enthused, but to be fair the sculptor lineup alone would have sold it.
We should do something frostgrave'y here in Denmark if it turns out nicely

It's a date!
-
This looks to be an exciting release; will be following this and eagerly anticipating the launch!
-
Absolutely lovely figures.
Must have's for many a fantasy player I reckon.
:-* :-*
-
Who is this Dallimore joker getting all the best gigs? Never heard of him.
-
Great wizards. Troops sound interesting. Please post pics for this of us that can't get to salute.
-
It's a date!
Deal :D
-
A sprue of generic but interesting adventurers would probably go down nicely with many collectors!
-
Some more pictures in the North Star newsletter.

-
Exciting images :)
Looks like some really cool stuff.
-
That's some of the best painting I've ever seen. Fantastic job!
-
This might be a stupid question, but what is Nickstarter!?
-
A preorder deal
8)
-
The painting is all Mr Kevin Dallimore, North Star staff member, as is all the photography, and the layout, and whatever else we throw his way!
A Nickstarter is a tongue in cheek name for our pre-order program, taking some ideas from the more famous crowd-funding company. Visit the North Star site in May to see more.
-
May?! :(
-
Not massively inspired by the metal sculpts, but there are hundreds of alternatives around so that's no big deal. Waiting for pics of the plastics.

Wizards are some of the most common fantasy sculpts indeed.
-
So, will the wizards be available individually or will they be sold in sets only? I'd really like to pick up that first one for my Norse fantasy. 8)
-
The Wizards will come in a two pack, Wizard and Apprentice.
-
I can only assume the apprentices will have the same theme as their wizard, so that's fine by me. 8)
-
Yep - that's the idea. A wizard and his/her apprentice will be stylistically consistent. In the game, in keeping with the mentor/student relationship, an apprentice is defined by the quality of his wizard - so, if a wizard improves at casting spell X, so too does the apprentice.
My absolute favourite is the Necromancer pairing - one slightly aristocratic, arrogant-looking wizard, and his more thuggish assistant.
-
Well; my hype is real
The only problem I have s that June is a long way away :l
I am very curious as to how the necromancer will look, seeing as I am currently working on an undead warband :)
-
I'm sure I'll be wanting several of the couples. ;)

-
Now, that, is bloody gorgeous.
Very much looking forward to the Nickstarter on this one.
Will there be anymore insights to the rules closer to release Smith?
-
Absolutely - I've got the author (Joe) champing at the bit to talk about it...
For anyone going to Salute, Joe will be on the Osprey stand (TC07), and I'll also have a demo version of the rulebook available for flick-throughs and sneak-peeks.
-
Excellent. :D
Unfortunately, I'm going to miss Salute. So any little bits of information that come along will be gratefully received.
-
I hope they will do a band of wizards in pointy hats Discworld style. :D
-
Excellent. :D
Unfortunately, I'm going to miss Salute. So any little bits of information that come along will be gratefully received.
I'll see what I can do. There will be plenty of previews and whatnot - I'm just not sure when. Post-Salute, certainly.
I've also just been reminded that there is a demo game running at Salute in the Wargames Illustrated bunker (just opposite the Osprey stand, funnily enough). Kind of embarrassed that I'd forgotten that...

I especially love the spear - Too few fantasy models wield cool spears like that.
-
I think I might be getting in to this :)
-
im really liking the necromancer and soothsayer.

Another update from North Star... Today, the Sigilist. The Sigilist school specializes in words and writing, which may sound a bit vague and wishy-washy, but they've got access to some pretty powerful stuff.
Regarding wizard schools and spells, ANY wizard can use ANY spell (provided they know it), but will be pre-disposed towards some over others. Every spell has a base difficulty, which varies depending on how complex and powerful it is. This is then modified for the individual wizard by their school's relationship to the school from which the spell comes. Each wizard school can cast its own spells with no additional penalty, but will have 3 'aligned' schools, 5 'neutral' and 1 'opposed'.
All the difficulties for every known spell will be noted on the player's 'Wizard Sheet' (army roster), so there's no on-the-fly calculations needed!
Our Sigilist, for example, has the following:
- Aligned:Thaumaturge, Illusionist, Enchanter
- Neutral: Necromancer, Elementalist, Witch, Chronomancer, Soothsayer
- Opposed: Summoner
She'd therefore have a much easier time casting an Enchanter spell than she would attempting a Summoning ritual.
Of course, spending experience points (amongst other tactics) can be used to improve casting difficulties, but that's something for another day...
-
Is that scroll supposed to be floating under her hand or is it tied to her wrist?
-
Like this one, good to see Mark C is still sculpting the big stuff, even if it is for someone else :)
-
Another great figure. :D
I'm looking forward to seeing a few of the apprentices.. ;)
I like the thought process behind learning spells. Adds a lot more options and tactics, and won't restrict you to a few spells just because of your choice of wizard. Thanks for the extra details Smith. :D
-
Is that scroll supposed to be floating under her hand or is it tied to her wrist?
Floating
-
I know the game is based around a wizard his apprentice and human mercs but has there been and mention of larger creatures? Trolls or ogres?
-
Absolutely... http://www.plasticmalpractice.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/back-with-vengeance.html
What self-respecting ruined magic city would be complete without a number of wandering monsters, big and small?
-
Nice to see a larger picture of the Sigilist, I can use that figure for sure.
-
Nick, the best thing about this coming nickstarter is, that you brought back the fantastic 28mm stuff of Marc Copplestone. I hope you bring more of the fantastic stuff of Mr. Copplestone. It was very quiet the last years at Copplestone Casting. Thank you.
-
Who doesn't love a wimple?
-
You just need to tell me when you've got a 'window' Mr Wimple Fancier, they'll be some coming your way.
-
This is getting more and more compelling...
-
I'm very curious to see the aprentices. I really like the notion of carying trough the style of their master to them but keeping them their own character at the same time.
-
We had a wee playtest session at the White Hart club last night, running through the participation game we'll be running at Salute next week. Excuse the pictures, I've only got an iPhone 3.

If the chaps are willing, we'll probably run this same participation game at Partizan in Newark as well.
-
That's a nice looking table Nick. :D
Hope to see it make an appearance at Partizan.
-
I've sink into historical wargaming a few years ago, but suprisinlgy I'm realy interested in this project :) Focus on magic is truly what have catch me.
As name suggest game setting is in frozen city. Does it have some reflections in the rules? Or could I just make another ancient, ruined city and everything will work?
-
Hi guys, the author here,
It's really great to see so many people interested in Frostgrave and sharing my excitement for the launch of the game. This project has been a whole lot of fun, and so many talented people have gotten involved. Dmitry Burmak who has done all of the artwork, Nick and the gang at North Star, all of the sculptors who have turned in some really great figures, and, of course, Phil Smith, the long suffering editor.
Anyway, I'll try to answer whatever questions I can about the game.
Kadzik - you could very easily use Frostgrave in an alternate setting. The snow and ice are mainly just flavour. They do sometimes provide special rules in specific scenarios, but these could easily be justified in some other way.
-
The Great and Powerful Copplestone making 28mm fantasy again. One can only weep manly tears of joy.
J

Thank you for answer! Good to know, I don't have to make a new frozen table full of ruin :) But on the other side, when I will be "forced" to make such table, I would make one with great joy! :D
-
"Mordheim on Ice" :D
-
Has it been mentioned how many scenerios are in the main book?
-
Nice to have you on the thread Joe. :D
Just a quick question to start with; are there any restrictions on which henchmen can be taken because of the wizards school of magic? Or can you have whoever you like in your employ?
-
This is great to see new figures from Mark Copplestone (one of the very best, IMHO). Please, put him to work in more figures!!!
-
There are 10 'specific' scenarios (i.e. those taking place in rare locations, usually with similarly unique threats or treasures associated with them) and about 15 'rumours' (little adventure seeds scattered through the text to get the creative juices flowing. There is also a random encounter table to introduce a variety of threats to your own scenarios.
Much like spells, all wizards can hire all henchman types. The main restrictions are the cost to hire (at the start, more so than further into a campaign) and the total size of the warband. Both, of course, are... negotiable with the right spells, equipment etc.
-
This projekt looks great! :-*
-
Ah, right. So the balance is between hiring and equipping your warband and giving your wizard spells then? Interesting. :)
A nice hint on the expansion book too in the interview with Dmitry. ;)
-
So are most of the undead and monster mainly put into play as random encounters or are they part of the warbands? If they come from random events it seems like the game would really benefit from having a "game master"
-
It is possible to have some undead and other monsters in your warband, or to take control of them during the game. Independent monsters are controlled by a simple AI system.
-
Ok, I was unable to sleep tonight (officialy over technical project - but realy thinking about the game).
1. Can I have mounts?
2. How does armour works?
3. What happen when mage is killed?
4. During campaign can I freely change composition of my henchmen (so like on-off battles with mages gaining experience) or composition is set and I can hire new-ones as replacements.
-
I have to say I am very excited about this game. I love the variety of wizards and the way their apprentices are themed to their "school" of magic so to speak. It looks like it's going to be really easy to make a unique wizard character and build a little gang around him. Looking forward to more fluff as well. I really am a narrative-focussed player so anything with a nice setting I can immerse myself into just grabs me instantly. The figures so far look wonderful! Well done, North Star and Osprey - I don't think it's too early to say that this deserves to be a huge success. It is likely to be my very first Nickstarter as well...
-
You just need to tell me when you've got a 'window' Mr Wimple Fancier, they'll be some coming your way.
Yeah, looking good for the end of April. I've just got one model on the table right now to finish off, then a couple of ongoing projects which can get done any time.
-
I'm afraid there are no rules for mounts. They just aren't practical in the ruins. Most of the time, even if a mage is knocked out of the game, he will not be 'killed'. However, if he does end up dead, you can promote your apprentice to be the new warband leader. He won't be as powerful, but he should catch up soon. You can hire or fire members of the warband between any game.
Explaining how armour works would involve explaining the entire combat system. Since I wrote an article about just that for Wargames Soldier and Strategy, I wouldn't feel right going into details here.
-

...yet. One of us will pop something up here soon enough!
-
looking forward to this...
-
Are there only humans or will there be elves, dwarves etc ?
-
Are there only humans or will there be elves, dwarves etc ?
I know I am rebasing some Dwarf crossbowmen and getting an ork warband built...I get the impression the stats for henchmen are generic enough that you can pretty much do what you want figure wise.
-
There are no specific rules for non-human races. That said, there is no reason that wizards and henchmen can't be represented by them. During play-testing a lot of people made up warbands of dwarves and goblins. As long as the weapon load-out on the henchmen is correct it makes no difference.
-
Good God, that's great news! Goodbye guys, now I have to sow a Frostgrave propaganda in my Mordheim group :)
One last question: are there big differences between weapons ?
-
There is a small difference between weapon classes - so basically one-handed, two-handed, and staffs are treated differently, but there is no difference between an sword and a mace if they are both one-handed.
-
What with spears? Siply graded as one-handed?
And missile weapons?
-
Spears are considered 1-handed weapons. Missiles weapons are just bows and crossbows - crossbows hit harder but take longer to reload.
-
Thank you very much! Now lots of things is celar to me.
-
I dug out all my mordheim/chaos/dungeoncrawl warbands yesterday (mostly Grenadier/Copplestone really) and many would fit perfectly in the Frostgrave setting, even if possibly a bit underdressed.
But were to find ruined stone buildings? Resin Roman scenery, LotR plastic, Ziterdes hardfoam? I've got an old White Dwarf with Arnor ruins made of pink foam.
I really like the stone ruins setting as it's only one step from any dungeon scenery project.
-
Personaly, I'd like to make some Greek ruins - buy some cake columns and make some temple-like buildings, more or less ruined.

Hirst Arts molds are going to be useful for that sort of thing, not sure how much it costs to ship to Europe.

How do you put your group for a scenario together? What i mean is, how do you manage, if a new player in campaign with a fresh group want´s to play against a seasoned group with lots of items?
-

Thanks for this site - quite inspirational. I've thought about simple rows of columns with a roof, but idea of this arch is great!
I need only columns as I'm quite skilful with styrofoam sculping :) And I really hate plaster. It's heavy and liable to shatter (even during storage, not to mention transport)
-

I was involved in the playtesting of Frostgrave and during that time I was building me a new "warband" while the others kept their old.
And, although I was starting with a completley unexperienced group it never felt like I hadn't a chance against the other ones.
But, I was asking Joe about that too, and he was thinking of making some rules to compensate the difference, maybe by granting some more cash to build the group or giving some extra xp, but I don't know how it will be handled in the finished rules now.
-
In the end, I decided not to make specific rules for bring an warband into an existing campaign. I just believe the question is better answered by the players playing the campaign than by an author without all of the facts.
That said, the biggest difference between any two Frostgrave gangs is likely to be the level of the wizard. With nothing else to go on, I would allow the new player to create a wizard 1 level below the lowest level wizard in the campaign. I would then give them a big chunk of money which they can use any way they want - buying henchmen, magic items, a base. However, it's pretty impossible to say what that amount of money should be without knowing what the other player's gangs look like.
As Comsquare said, unless the campaign is quite advanced, I don't think any starting warband will be completely out of it. Magic, wisely employed, is a great leveler, and thugs are tougher than most people think!
-
The question is...has to be the lead character spellcaster?
And his apprentice?
Is it possible to cast spells, well, in Full Plate?
(sir Sparhawk and his band of friends from legendary Eddings novels)
Is it possible to have animal companions instead of Undead
(Witch of the Wild from the Dragon Age)
I know its about spellcasters, but still I wonder if there are any other option for alternate characters classes?
-
I'm afraid it has to be a wizard leading the warband, and they cannot wear armour. That said, you wizard could focus on combat and armour spells.
Yes, one of the Witch spells is 'Animal Companion'.
-
I am realy sad. I like good games with knights and not wizards... :'(
Well I have to find some wizards I like...
Morrigan the Witch of the Wild, Varian Jaegere, Isiem Shadowcaller, The Srinshee, Spell Captain Josidiah Starym and his pet Guenwhywar; Pathfinder Iconic Characters...... OK there are a lot of options. The game sounds so good that I have to find some spellcasters I realy like.
Is it possible to have animal hanchmens?
Thanks for answer.
-
As for animal henchmen - as Joe said, yes - one of the spells is for 'Animal Companion' - the Wizard can replace one of his human henchmen with a pet of some kind.
It is also possible to temporarily control animals found amongst the ruins.
There are knights in the game (a couple of types in fact), but they are employed as henchmen rather than leading the gang. You can have several knights in your party, but you do have to pay lots of gold for such quality soldiers!
-
Thanks, the question was moreorless about full animal henchmen party for animalistic caster (you know old Beastmaster movie?).
Is there any change for "demi-humans" casters (Elves and that bunch of heroes).
-
An all animal warband wouldn't let you pick up much treasure...in theory you could have an animal companion, and a warband full of wardogs, but I wouldn't like your chances.
You count just treat demi-humans as humans.
-
Perfect, thanks
-
Now this thing's definitely something I'm looking forward to!
Somehow reminds me of the good olde game Lords of Chaos. Gawd I loved that game...

A wild and random suggestion - said Eddings novels, if I recall right, had a pretty powerful sorceress whose name eludes me at the moment but who basically taught the knights their magics. Could you consider using her as the leader of your warband, with Sparhawk & rest of the knightly lot acting as warriors?
-
Sefrenia. That's my thinking on this matter. :-)
I am looking forward to the background and the settings. The casters from Northstar somehow reminds me Heroes of Might and Magic II...
-
First of all thanks for the quick answers. :)
In a playtester´s blog i´ve read four battlereports and they made it to level 20. So, how quick is level progression and is the level capped at 20?
-

That sound very fast to me, would be 500 ep per game, quite much.
Doable, but... :?
We played more games while not reaching that level.
In the end it depends on the scenario you play.
You need 100 EP to reach a new level, and can gain them through different things, like casting successfully a spell, taking out enemies (only those taking out by the wizard himself count), getting treasures and reaching scenario-goals.
At least it was like that in the playtest :)
-
I would say that most people gain 1-3 levels per game, with 3 representing total domination in a game. Five is theoretically possible, but probably only in a scenario with special xp possibilities. I've never seen it happen.
There is no maximum level. There is an optional rule that allows a wizard of high enough level to 'transend' which gives a specific way for a wizard to 'win' a campaign if such a rule is desired.
-
Did you see new apprentices? Fantastic models.
-
They do look pretty nice!

when is the nickstarter , starting?
-
May I think
-
May indeed. As early as we can, but there are some details we need to sort out.
There will be some Early Bird advantages to ordering straight away.
-
I had a chance to see the game at Salute, so here is my first impression of the game: https://nftu.wordpress.com/2015/04/27/frostgrave/ (https://nftu.wordpress.com/2015/04/27/frostgrave/) The text is in german, but it has some pictures of the models and layout in it.

Why the campaign chapter started with Injury and Death? I am little bit afraid that we will have to need A LOT OF Character Sheets... So the new guys can find cover behind pile of bodies (legendary Gamers 2) ...ehm...just kidding.
Models looks great. Except the blue shield. That one is terrible, seems I will have to find some source of medieval shields. And all weapons poles are to thick... but I can live with that one ;-)

Those seem to be the 3-ups, so I can imagine the shield wont look quite as bad in the proper scale. Still a bit clunky, I agree.
The rest, though :-* :-* :-* :-*
I will be poor come june.
-
Yeah, Osprey will ruin my determination to spare some money this year.

Those figures definitely weren´t 28mm. ;)
It is the same schowcase. In this picture you can the the head of one peeking in from the bottom:

The plastic henchmen/soldiers are designed by Bob Naismith, who also did the Fireforge foot sergeants etc., so the 3-ups should eventually scale really well with those.
-
Right you are ;-)
-
Loving all this frostgrave stuff the plastics should be awesome
-
I too am rather keen on all these! Cannot wait! :D
-
Love the minis.
-
Lovely looking figures. :D
The plastics sound/look great. A bit of compatibility with fireforge stuff will be a bonus too.
-
I am going to be all over these - bring on the nickstarter!
-
For those who might be interested, there is an article on designing the Frostgrave combat system in the new issue of Wargames: Soldiers and Strategy.
-
any more news on the nickstater..?
-
From FB: "This weekend if all goes well, early next week latest."
-
Oooh! I'm looking forward to that. This will be my very first Nickstarter, and I intend to go a bit nuts! :D
Something about a new and original fantasy setting has me very excited; I really enjoy swotting up on the fluff of things.

Does anybody know, if wizard and apprentice have to be of the same school of magic? I´m currently thinking of a celtic themed warband, were the wizard is a thaumaturge and the apprentice is a witch.
-
I can't seem to find them listed on the Northstar site

Last version I read, Yes.

Not an official answer but I would have thought the whole point of being an apprentice is that you have a passing interest in what your chosen tutor is going to teach you. ;)
-
OK ITS MAY WHERE IS MY NICKSTARTER!
-
lol
-
Not an official answer but I would have thought the whole point of being an apprentice is that you have a passing interest in what your chosen tutor is going to teach you. ;)
Since everybody can learn every spell i thought it would be sufficient to have a common interest in magic. ;)
-
I suspect any master would be offended if his student wanted to follow a different school of magic to himself.
-
:) Official answer:
An apprentice is the same school as his wizard.
One thing that I don't think has been mentioned before: you don't start the game with just spells from your school - thus, it is entirely possible to tailor your spell selection to your theme right from the beginning.
If you want a Celtic theme, go for it - but there may be other thematically appropriate spells in a number of schools. Off the top of my head, some of the scrying magic in the Soothsayer school might fit, as might some of the Illusionist spells if you want to mimic the Glamour of the Fae.
-
Since everybody can learn every spell i thought it would be sufficient to have a common interest in magic. ;)
Fair point. :D I think that as the difficulty in casting certain spells depends on what school of magic your wizard follows, having an apprentice from a second school of magic would give you an advantage over other wizards.
Ta Smith. Much better answer than mine. ;)

What sized table will froestgrave be played on?

5 different levels available. Looks good.
-
Looks very good. :D
I hope the Lich model isn't just restricted to lvl 5 wizard and will become available to purchase.
I bloody hate limited edition figures. ;)
-
Very nice and something for every budget! I'm certainly in for at least the level 3 pledge!
-
Great stuff I want to go for the top pledge!

Only Nick can say for sure, but many other figures have become available after Nickstarters. Not all of them, and usually a long time later...
-

I know, I know, I'll have to wait and see.. ;) lol
Looking forward to seeing what else is planned for the Nickstarter. There's some great deals there already as well as a few peaks at some of the additional metal figures. :D
-
Just bought some plastic perry agincourt minis to convert for FG but found out now i can use plate armour in the game !! >:(
Why??
-
Well the fluff/world looks to be very feudal in terms of technology so perhaps there is no plate? I don't see how it matters, just count your plated minis as wearing the highest armour the rules allow for.
I too am tempted by the top tier pledge there!
-
I wish there was a minis only tier or pick your minis.
-
I'm not familiar with the 'Nickstarter' concept - can someone point me to more info concerning 'spend goals' and 'subsidized shipping' ?

It's a tongue in cheek reference to the way several companies use Kickstarter, ie as a preorder system. I suspect the website info has updated before the webpage giving all the details has gone up. Usually there is a page on the Kev Dallimore/North Star Magazine site with all the information.
I wish there was a minus ony tier or pick your minis.
Don't quite understand, do you mean a level without the book? Can't see that happening given that's the game...
-
I've just posted information and pictures on Facebook about the plastic soldiers for Frostgrave:

My point is that I don't really want the game but I like the minis.
It was meant to say Minis only tier. Stupid autocorrect and lack of me proof reading lol
-
I'm going to sound a bit 'bullish' now about the Nickstarter and people who want stuff that isn't in there. Tough.
EVERYTHING will be available to buy individually in July. So if you just want one of the wizard packs, they'll be there for you on the official launch, for you to pick and choose at your leisure.
The Nickstarter is for those who want to really join us in this Frostgrave project, who want the game, want to play the game and like the miniatures we've made for it. We are adding free stuff and discounts for those of you who are going to get involved.
Anyone who just wants one wizard, or one box of plastics for their GoT project, the Nickstarter isn't for you, but you only have to wait until July.
Bullishness over, sorry. lol
Nick
PS The Nickstarter explanation page will be up and running this weekend here: http://nstarmagazine.com/

You can, the new Knight figure we've had done is in plate armour.
-
Love the plastics - a bit like the old Empire Militia/Free Companies/Mordheim plastics, so many combinations and options.
The rest don't look too shabby either ;)
-
Will definitely be in for at least level 3. Do I need the minis? No. But I do want them.
The ultimate pledge level looks great too.. Certainly wouldn't rule it out... ;)
-
I SO want the Ultimate Pledge (man I'm weak)
-
Really nice everything. More close up pics of the henchmen now please. ;)

Quite GW-like - a definite Mordheim vibe.
But these will be very useful for my kitbashed Game of Thrones collection... Some very nice parts included...

I especially like the barbarian specialist soldier which will be released in metal. Picture over here http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2015/05/northstar-miniatures-more-plastic.html?m=1 (http://wargameterrain.blogspot.be/2015/05/northstar-miniatures-more-plastic.html?m=1)
Also nice the boxed set will contain lanterns and other bits. I was also wondering if the Fireforge miniatures they used for some pictures in the book are available with the fur bits or if these are converted with greenstuff? Picture of these in same post as linked.

Straight outta Lankhmar.

Those are Kev Dallimore's conversions, he's used green stuff for the fur I'm afraid. I shall be copying a couple of bits on my Fireforge figures ;)

Pretty much my first thought when I saw all the layered cloth etc was "these guys will make awesome Black Watch".
-
You can, the new Knight figure we've had done is in plate armour.
Good cause ive done mine with the agincourt plastics and greenstuffed lots of fur on him as well..ideas ive stolen from captian bloods ASOIAF minis!!
What size do the gaming board need to be 3ft x 3ft ?? want to get strated on it...!
-
I really like those plastics. They don't really fit with the theme of anything I'm working on, but I really want to find an excuse to get/paint some!
-
Gameboard: 3' by 3' ruined stone city. Lots of terrain to block lines of sight, 'maze like' is the description, but think Osgiliath rather than Mordheim.

you are so right Richard they have to be used for GoT!!!
-
Will Northstar be producing scenery to go with this game? Particularly since the Battlefield in a Box series of Gothic ruins no longer seems to be available...
Does anyone have suggestions for suitable scenery, apart from some of the lovely stuff from Fenris Games?
-
Its a shame the GW Ruins of Osgiliath aren't still available
-
They were a bit thin for walls if I recall. I'd use pics of them for inspiration and whip out the old foam!

I'd assume that as these are pictures of the 3-up's they were done traditionally.

I'm in, for the top Pledge - I can't resist anything with Wizards in it :-*
-
The Nickstarter has kicked off.
http://nstarmagazine.com/FROSTGRAVE.htm
Any questions, feel free to email.
-
Exciting news! Which level to choose, that is the question ;)
-
Jumped aboard. :D Lvl 3 to start but looking to add various extras to my pledge.
I love a good Nickstarter. I can nearly smell the shiny metal. ;)
-
Pegasus Hobbies have modular plastic Gothic Building kits. There's a main wall/door kit which gives you, I think, 24 x 10cm/4" sections - certainly enough to fill a 2x2 board for £25/$40. There are also a couple of add-on packs that include buttresses, rose windows and pitched-roof gable ends for a lower price.
None of these packs have floors included, but they do have supports so you can add your own between the walls.
There's also a set of ruins that can stand alone or connect to the other sets - you get 2 corner ruins that are 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") and include the first floor ruined corner (2nd floor for some of you).
Puppetswar have just released a series of ruined buildings, ranging from a small ruined chapel all the way up to a ruined cathedral. Again, that cathedral would fill a 2x2 board, for IIRC €110. Resin I'm guessing.
Games Workshop sold a very nice Osgiliath Ruins kit for their LotR line, which was a single ruined building in three sections for about £20. It's now OOP, so snap it up if you see one!
The Dust Tactics building was more modern and blocky than the Pegasus buildings, but was also modular, plastic and very good value.
Carving your own foam walls is a good way to go, and Hirst Arts moulds do well for both walls and some of the embellishments like columns, windows and domes. Plastic columns for supporting wedding cakes also good!
Edit: Just seen folks mention the GW LotR ruins.
-
what's the table size for this game? this looks real interesting. fantasy and skirmish was what I was looking for recently
-
the writer said on another forum he recommended it being played on 3x3 but has seen it work on 2x2 and 4x4 if I remember correctly.
-
I dislike that the "flat shipping" (9£) of the nickstarter is actually more expensive than regular shipping to Denmark would be.
That is a bit silly. :/
I do want the 40£ 'deal', though. But I might have to wait until general release.
-
thanks Carlos. 3 x 3 is perfect for me. hmm. ... and I was trying to find a reason to hold off on this one... this makes it harder
-
I am curious to know more about the rules and the magic mechanics, but I am pretty excited and it's difficult not to pledge for the top tier!

I am curious to know more about the rules and the magic mechanics, but I am pretty excited and it's difficult not to pledge for the top tier!
In the latest issue of WSS there's a short article, it only deals with the combat mechanism (not magic). It's D20 based and 1 roll serves both as the 'to hit' as well as the 'damage' roll. I really don't know if I like the mechanism as described.
-
For those that are interested, and might have missed it, I have written a blog giving the basics of constructing a Frostgrave warband:
http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/building-frostgrave-warband.html
-
Joe thanks for it, but lots of my friends and I have seen a lot of question on facebook as well have a hard choice to select appropriate wizard. You know the modelas are great, but they would like to choose the wizard as per their skills and feats ;-).
Could you a little bit introduce what is speciality and lets say combat behaviour of each of the wizards?
That will be very helpfull to select the best one.
-
I've read the WSS article too (thanks Joe) and I have to admit to being particularly taken with the combat mechanism. It's simple enough to get on with straight into the game but with enough flexibility to make it better than 'highest roll wins'.
Different henchmen will bring their own modifiers into the rolls. And armour is dealt with well.
It makes combat effective with enough of a random element that will restrict it becoming a foregone conclusion. And I guess it doesn't overpower the magic powers of the wizards which is the focus of the game. :D
-
Is it possible to PVE (Play vs Environment)?
Therefore one against monsters?
-
Is it possible to PVE (Play vs Environment)?
Therefore one against monsters?
Not as written but there is a simple 'AI' to deal with monsters discovered by searching for treasure. You could do this fairly easily with very little modification to the rules.
-
The first goal in the Nickstarter hit! It's really great to see everyone so enthusiastic about the game already.
I will try to get a blog up today or tomorrow giving a brief run-down on the wizards types. That said, there are no hard and fast rules about wizard appearance. A wizard from any school can dress anyway they choose (brightly coloured necromancers may get laughed at, but it's not against the rules!). So, when it comes to buying figures, I would just get the ones you like the best and you can figure out exactly which school you want them to be from later.
Also - if you click on the wizards on the Nickstarter page, you will get a little blurb about them.
Dwebakuk is right. There are no specific 'solo' rules, but if you don't mind creating your own scenarios, the rules can give you a fun game.
Ray Earle - glad you enjoyed the article. While a Knight will generally beat a Thug, there is certainly a random element to it - that's why smart wizards will use a bit of magic to alter those odds in their favour!
Come on, Ice Toad!
-
I have prepared summary of the info from here and other sources. I hope I have got all data and assumes right. If you are interested you can read it here. I am sorry but I am not a native english speaker, so please excuse some typos and "lost in translation" info.
Hope I did not offent any legal issues ;-) you never know now. Its definetely not intended ;-)

Ignore me! I personally think the middle guy's sword hand and the now holding hands are diddy but I'm also remembering some digital renders I saw of Bob's Victrix figures that had tiny hands, it must be skewing my perception! Carry on.... o_o lol
-
Looking at the pics it looks all human forces will there be any other races like dwarves and elves ??
-
As confirmed before - there are no any demihumans, but anyway you can use whatever models you like...
-
Just got sucked in and placed my pre-order.
It's been ages since I spent anything on hobby stuff and then all of a sudden I place two orders this month and both happen to be from Northstar. Don't figure. Lol lol
-
Come on, Ice Toad!
The Ice Toad cometh!! :D
Second spend goal reached. Not bad for two days. ;)
I hope we keep reaching goals. I'd really like to order those demons and constructs that are lined up.
-
Am I the only one who thinks that Ice Toad used to have a job sitting outside of Jabba's palace?
-
Not now you've just mentioned it.
-
I'd been thinking Rygel XVIth, but now you mention it...
-
How about a preview of the rules please? Has anyone blogged anything concrete regarding the mechanics?
-
Several have been posted a few times. These two cover what you need to know.
Joe's walkthrough of creating a Warband:
http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/building-frostgrave-warband.html
Dalcor has collected the info from a few places and he posted info on the mechanics:
http://wargamingasp.blogspot.cz/2015/05/what-is-frostgrave.html
-
Here's a blog written by the game's editor which has a bit more information: http://plasticmalpractice.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/a-little-bit-of-frostgrave.html
-
At any rate - I've gone for a level 3 Pledge. Gotta get them plastics.
I had a hard time deciding on a pair of wizards though. I went with the necromancer, but with a mental note to get some of the others at a later point/as cash allows.
-
Well I am going for level 1 and the fiction... and I will see what I will collect. Definetely new Undead Encounter and Snow Leopard looks great. Not sure about wizzard as I like a differente estetics about miniatures. More inclined to spanish or french style...
-
I'm in for the rules and the Sigilists, they're beauties :)
-
I'm in for the rules and the Sigilists, they're beauties :)
I agree. They were the biggest contenders for me. The Thaumaturges and Enchanters are pretty cool too.
-
I'm in for the rules and the Sigilists, they're beauties :)
Good to know, I'm not the only one :D Sigilist with her aprientience (what a word!) has lots of character. Second best is Summoner.
-
My personal favourites are Chronomancer, Necromancer and Enchanter. However I will most likely find other wizards for use in my games.
-
Placed my Nickstarter order earlier this evening and now eagerly awaiting the release.
This is the first time that I've signed up for this kind of pre-release program which makes it that little bit more exciting to be in with a new game right from the start.
-
I was initially leaning away from the enchanters, but reading that hey are often sculptors has pushed me over the edge and now i want a sculpture themed warband.
-
This is bad, this is very very bad.
Ok, that's it I'm joining in.
Illusionists are nice, so too the Thaumaturge. Looks like later on I will be going for a level three plus assorted extras.
I need to learn to paint faster. There is no way all of my BF&S chaps will be done by July. It's either that or find some more space. So much for sticking to just a couple of projects at a time this year. :D
-
Are there any scale comparison shots with GW minis by any chance?
-
I might be able to find something in the office that would do the job... I'll take a look tomorrow!
-
That's the next spend goal gone. :D
-
We are a club do want to place a grouped purchase. Do we get the bonuses for each Level 3 order or one for the whole order?
-
I'm fascinated by how excited everyone is about this game (the set of rules, the invented setting, and some accompanying miniatures).
I like the look of the plastics very much - but that's because I have other potential uses for them. (I like the look of the metals too, although I have no use for them, never having been into wizards - Gandalf apart, obviously... )
But it's interesting to see so many people so completely bought into something on the basis of the advance PR and marketing. Personally, I'm not a fan of 'packaged game systems' - I'd always rather make up my own. But I'm not knocking it. It all looks very well done, and at least it seems original.
But I'm genuinely interested to know what it is that makes Frostgrave such an exciting prospect for so many people...
Can you say? What is it about this product that has grabbed you? Why the excitement?
-

As promised, but with apologies for a) the quality of the photo and b) the rather ad hoc basing solution - I hope this is enough to give an idea of scale.

I wouldn't say excitement, but I'm am looking forward to its release. :)
For me personally I started wargaming with mass battle games but Mordheim, Necromunda/Confrontation and inquisitor bring back some of my best memories of long campaigns and the best narrative games of my youth. This game is, in my mind, of that same ilk.
The figures are really nice as well (well, very nice) with some of my favourite sculptors involved. It won't take a lot to set up a warband and there are plenty of options if you don't want to opt in to the 'official' figure range.
I like my historicals but every so often its nice to do something different. I suppose different things grab people's interests. I'm not really that bothered by some medieval Swiss and a huge great bear, but others are. ;)
-

lol Not me, really. Swiss leave me cold ;)
I agree, the sculpting stable recruited for Frostgrave is the tops, and I'm sure has a lot to do with the enthusiastic response.
-

If you buy 3x Level 3 Wizard orders, you get three sets of the freebies.
In reply to Capt Blood, I don't know why people like it either. I don't think it's the marketing. We presented 'Of Gods and Mortals' in the same fashion, but we only got 1/2 the response. This game has got into folks minds more than our previous Nickstarters, In Her Majesty's Name was the most popular, we'll see if Frostgrave overtakes it.
-
I'm tempted more and more... The pledge manager from Myth and Conan are looming, but if I can scrape out the 111 UKP I will.

Thanks Nick. Well whatever it is, you've obviously hit on something with this that really appeals. Now you just need to bottle it ;)
Hopefully a few more responses will give you some useful market research.

I my case, I am in it primarily for the plastics. Like you, I have "other uses" for them as well. These happened to come along at a point where I was on the look out for a rag-tag unit of militia types.
Apart from that, the wizards are some lovely sculpts, and Northstar seems to have got some of my favourite sculptors to work on the project.
So I wanted the plastics, and I can definitely find uses for a couple of nice wizard miniatures. At that point, I just thought "sod it" - and went for the rules as well. It looks well done, and if nothing else, will probably be a nice read. And since I am a bit of a sucker for fantasy skirmish gaming, Frostgrave kinda just hits all of my marks.
I do think that people sometimes just enjoy a good hype. :D

I guess that the main reasons are:
1) Many people love Mordheim but the game is not supported anymore; the game mechanics are often complicated and the rules include many balance issues, which means that every group uses house rules → there is demand for something like Mordheim in a new coat.
2) Frostgrave has original atmosphere based on winter and ice → the game is literally cool ;) It has even dog-sized ice frog! If played on normal terrain, I would be much less excited.
3) The miniatures (especially the plastic set) intrigue even those who are not much into playing the game.
Just my guess, but I think that these reasons matter.
-
Very interesting feedback, thank you :)
-
Beautiful models and a game that would be easy to add in other favorite models? Yes, please!
-
Agree the not Mordheim is really making it tempting, to be honest, and its ticking lots of happy boxes.
It is sharing space with other similar games offerings, old and new, that are pending availability, are available, or in some cases from long ago, not available.
It makes using our existing collections/other units within it possible.
The quality of the sculpts and written material seen so far shows good promise of a quality product, plenty around that offer far less for more money and if it delivers on what we have seen so far, it deserves to do well.
Regardless of all the stuff in my mountain I may find myself needing to try a Nickstarter..
Still i have time to check my finances and should have some overtime funds before end of June to reward myself for my hardwork with more toys hobby product o_o

The editor of Frostgrave talks about constructing his warbands: http://plasticmalpractice.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/ruin-raiding-for-pleasure-and-profit.html
-
For me it is the whole package..
Great concept, great art, great sculptors hence great minis, metal characters and plastic 'troops', literature to back up and bolster the rules and a commitment to support the game with future expansion(s).
The PR is also very good but the way it has been managed involves the target audience with interaction with the manufacturer and the author making you feel a part of the whole process as it evolves rather than just a customer merely buying another set of rules and figures to suit.
This is also the first time I've subscribed to this kind of package since a return to the hobby last year and I do find it quite exciting watching the progress as goals are met and exceeded :)
-
Thanks for the links. I'm not sure about the D20 mechanic but otherwise it looks promising
Here's a blog written by the game's editor which has a bit more information: http://plasticmalpractice.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/a-little-bit-of-frostgrave.html
-
As promised, but with apologies for a) the quality of the photo and b) the rather ad hoc basing solution - I hope this is enough to give an idea of scale.
Thanks that's great. Will definitely place my order this weekend
thanks again

Anyone tell me what size the standard board is for this game? Looks like what, 3 x 3 or 4 x 4?
-
never having been into wizards
I'd normally agree but something about the sheer variety of different schools of magic appeals. I think this looks very much like a game which you can put your own stamp on

You are absolutely right! Reminds me what (besides other lovely features!) people love about In Her Majesty's Name.
BTW I am also quite happy that Frostgrave limits choices of weapons and armour for soldiers. Avoids many dilemmas which I hate in Mordheim :)
-
But it isnt just Mordheim on Ice. I can use my old Realm of Chaos sorcerors and thugs, a team of dungeon crawl miniatures, LotR or any wizard with a unit of historical medievals. From the previews I understand it isnt a real 'package' at all as you can basically do what you like, so much more for adults than your average not-GW new-awesome-game . But the rules are released with a series of really nice miniatures by some of my favorite sculptors.
-
You are absolutely right. It wasn't conceived as a package, we at North Star got involved after the game was written. You can use whatever figures you like.
We got involved on the figure front for a couple of reasons.
1 is the fact that with so much great artwork in the book, it'd be a shame to not have a figure range that reflected those designs.
2 is although it seems there are more Wizard figures in the world then you could imagine, actually if you were to walk into a 'common or garden' games shop in the UK to buy Frostgrave, and ask the guy behind the counter for a suitable Wizard and Apprentice model, he'd struggle to find something off the shelf. The Soldiers are the same. You could build a Wizard Warband going through the Crusader and Artizan ranges, plus some plastics, but very few shops would carry the selection the web has.
But now you can walk into Orcs Nest London, buy the game, buy a wizard pack, buy the plastic box set and you're off!
-
Anyone tell me what size the standard board is for this game? Looks like what, 3 x 3 or 4 x 4?
3x3 or 4x4 would work - I much prefer the former - gives more of an 'up close and personal' feel, and really drives two opposing warbands together.
-
I'm very tempted for the Nickstarter but have not pulled the trigger yet... yet being the operative word I suspect.
But most of the pictures I have seen of games have shown rubble as the table top. However, could the 4gorund fantasy houses etc. be used -would they fit into the background?
I assume the damaged ones would but what about the non damaged ones?
-
The artwork of Frostgrave shows a ruined stone city. The 4Ground range is ruined half-timber. I wouldn't say 'don't use them', but I think you should look more for Osgiliath than Mordheim.
As an aside, the Wizards retire to surrounding settlements after their forays into Frostgrave. Maybe the battle could continue there, and I thought using the Stoic Inn as a battleground between two warbands would be great!

From facebook:
What are we NOT telling you about Frostgrave? The 2nd plastic box set, that'd be it...
-
I presumed this would be the Mantic undead offer...
-
Nah, the second plastic boxes set was announced after the Mantic undead encounter set.
I'm wondering what it could be? Possibly a terrain boxed set?
-
There's a sneak peek on North Star's FB page:

The picture doesn't look like the Mantic undead at all! Have no clue as cultists don't fit to the storyline of Frostgrave. Bandits are basically included in the first plastic set :)
-
Ah, not terrain then. ::)
Interesting..
-
...cultists don't fit to the storyline of Frostgrave...
...or do they?
(they do).
-
A multipart plastic box set of cultists of the quality of the mercenaries would force my hand to pledging. I can only hope it's so.
-
...or do they?
(they do).
Ooooo.. ;)

Looking at that Picture, and the picture of the small construct - it makes me think "Construct Henchmen".
-
...or do they?
(they do).
From the information currently available they don't, but you are one of the few mortals "who know". And as April Fools' Day was month ago, I guess we can really expect some cultists :)
I am still not sure how they fit to the story we know so far. Perhaps as followers of the Lich Lord?
-
I am still not sure how they fit to the story we know so far. Perhaps as followers of the Lich Lord?
That was along my line of thinking too.
-
:-X
-
Too bad, I don't like the look of those constructs. I really was hoping for some cultist, but who knows what more they will release :)
-
Well if the core system is good I can see this being used for other settings. Mordheim style is an obvious one but I'm sure there are others as well. The cultists and others fit in very well to that. It may be new styles of magic though which might be more work.
-
Not all of the wizards of Frostgrave employ 'reputable' soldiers. Those who dabble in the darker magics sometimes have to settle for a slightly rougher lot of sell-swords.
-
Frostgrave is tempting. I like the minis and I'll surly get some specialists, casters and warrriors sets, but what keeps me away from it is this frozen city idea. Tell me I can play it in a scorched city as well and I'll glady give it a try, but I won't go and build removable snow covers for all my medieval houses and ruins...
-
The artwork of Frostgrave shows a ruined stone city. The 4Ground range is ruined half-timber. I wouldn't say 'don't use them', but I think you should look more for Osgiliath than Mordheim.
So, somebody going to put some affordable and versatile sets of 'not-Osgiliath' ruins on the market?
Maybe you should team up with Thomarillion/Ziterdes to get some themed stuff made in hard foam for all us eager gamers out here to get our frozen blue hands on? :)
I would want some...
-
So, somebody going to put some affordable and versatile sets of 'not-Osgiliath' ruins on the market?
GW HAD some, but stopped making them...
I'm going with the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic building sets, which come as 10cm sections. Not using the ruined ones, which I have painted up and covered in foliage, but the Large and two Small sets. I can "distress"* them with a hacksaw and a lot of swearing, but at least one of the small sets is decent enough to build "as is" and leave (mostly) intact. The rest I will probably do as half-buildings to give some modularity and recreate the "maze-like" city.
I have the same issue as Glitzer - cover them with snow or leave them as scorched and blasted generic ruins. I lack storage space, so tend to make quite generic scenery and use it for a range of games. I think a couple of my fellow Lincolnites are committing to the game and minis quite heavily, so I'll discuss more with them...
*I avoided the word ruin - I can ruin any hobby project but that's a different story...
-
So, somebody going to put some affordable and versatile sets of 'not-Osgiliath' ruins on the market?
Osgiliath is easy to build if you have access to foamboards and templates. Show me some generic and free to use Gondor-style papercraft houses and I'll do a short "Build real-3D Buildings based on cardboard templates" tutorial for you.
-

Actually, Ziterdes does make a couple of largish ruined stone buildings (originally intended for 40K, by the look of them). Scotia Grendel does both classical and gothic ruins in resin. And the venerable Tamiya 1/35 brick walls could easily be pressed into service. Rubble from chopped sprue and smashed cake decoration pillars.
Or you could just decide not to exactly reproduce the rulebook setting.
-
Can spears be used as hand weapons or are they categorised as something else?
Thanks

I know, but I also know myself well enough to realize that an attempt om that would end up half-finished in a cardbox, somewhere in my attic. I have a shedful of 'paused' terrain builds, because I lose interest when I cannot finish a build in an evening's time. Hard foam buildings in the right style I could use 'out of the box', or with small conversions to have some diversity.

Yup, I have the Administratum, and am going to order the Emperor Palace. If they had more Buildings, I would probably collect them all. I may buy another Administratum and leave the top part off to use as a separate ruin.
I am not a big fan of resin Buildings, as they are a pain to clean up (not to mention the dangerous dust any filing or sanding produces), and not very easy to convert.
Then there's the Hirst Arts molds: Forget about those, I'd be moving on to the next project long before the first set of Blocks had settled in the molds... ::)
-
The Pegasus Hobbies gothic buildings are nice (although the lack of roofs and floors is a let-down). However, the main issue for me is the simple fact I cannot buy them in my country. It's a shame, Pegasus Hobbies should really work on their retail distribution in Europe.
I am happy to own the OOP Osgiliath set by GW, but it obviously cannot cover 3x3 table. I hope Mantic will start to produce fantasy buildings in the style of their sci-fi Battlezones range some day - that would be simply brilliant. For now, I will probably use some of my unpainted DIY buildings.
--------
As to the mysterious second plastic set, this could be a clue ;)
ABOUT FROSTGRAVE: THAW OF THE LICH LORD
"Warbands will confront the Lich Lord’s minions, race against his agents to seize possession of mysterious artefacts, and brave the perils of Frostgrave in search of his lair."
-
I'm slightly tempted to get in on this. I'd like the Wizard figs and I've been looking for a fantasy skirmish. I'm a little ambivalent on the mechanics I read about in WSS. Hmmm....
-
Glitzer - it wouldn't take much to play it in an scorched city, if you want. Most of the cold and is flavour. You'll have to change some of the names of things, but the rules should work just fine. In some of the scenarios things like snowstorms will need to become sandstorms, but all and all, a pretty easy conversion.
Blofeld - spears count as hand weapons.
I am lucky in that I have access to a big collection of the Gale Force 9 Gothic ruins which are great. I am also slowly building up a collection of Hirst Arts ruins - actually this works out really well - I never seem to have the patience to finish a whole Hirst Arts building so they all become ruins anyway!
-
I have the old GW osgiliath stuff and two bits of GF9; I may just use a more generic fantasy ruined city vibe. Perhaps, to mix settings, winter hasn't yet come?
-
The other way around makes more sense. The idea is that the Frost is just starting to recede - perhaps you're guys are adventuring in later time period when the snow is mostly gone.
-
Not all of the wizards of Frostgrave employ 'reputable' soldiers. Those who dabble in the darker magics sometimes have to settle for a slightly rougher lot of sell-swords.
Even a little tidbit like this really expands the feel of the setting. Cool stuff!
-
Are there any pics of the sprues of the plastic henchmen? I would be interested to see what options are available.
-
Are there any pics of the sprues of the plastic henchmen? I would be interested to see what options are available.
Not yet, they haven't finished making the moulds so no sprue currently exists. The pics are of painted '3ups'. I think Nick posted a breakdown of the sprue somewhere though... Maybe?
As regards to the setting, one of the test games we played was fought through my Arabic town board using genies as the demons and my Arab warriors and wizards for the warbands. Worked absolutely fine, no reason you couldn't alter the setting to fit the terrain you want to play.
-
IIRC the henchmen are compatible with fireforge miniatures right? during the playtests we saw a few warbands made mostly from diferent fireforge boxes together, proving their kitbashing potential. Now with this one added in to the mix that got even biger. I believe most if not all of these sets are single sprue deals with a few special comand sprues. I would love for somebody to offer a mixed box, with one of each sprue in there. Allas fireforge does not sell seperate comand sprues last time I asked but even a box of just the "base" frame from each set would offer so much options for so many games. Maybe I'm the only one, but if there is enough interest I might actually be tempted to start this myself.

Definitely.
It's actually a huge frustration to me that I can't buy single sprues. There's a lot of Fireforge stuff I'd like to play around with, but I can't really afford/have no use for 24-48 boxes: I tend to play games/paint warbands in the 6-7 model range.
-
I finally succumbed, although I am still a little unsure about the rules. It's so rare for Copplestone to produce figures these days though that I feel like I can't afford to miss out! Really like most of the figures quite a bit and can always use them for Mordheim, I suppose, if the rules aren't to my liking. Fingers crossed that the rules are not just adequate but really good.
-
Guess what, the game exists! I just go my first author copy. I've put a couple of internal shots up on my blog:

Been sat patiently (sic) waiting for the post weekend update.
Decided that Nick is dealing with so many orders he's still counting it all up.
So I bit the bullet at put myself in for level 3. Hurrah!
-
Oh crap--went in level 5. :)
-
I've been eating haggis & glugging Whiskey in Edinburgh. :) Up date will go up tomorrow morning, I'm actually as keen as you guys to know where we are.
On the frozen terrain issue, we haven't actually got any snow/ ice terrain either. We sprinkle snow flock over the terrain for each game, and sweep it back into the pot after. Not as messy as you might think. We use the 4Ground snow.
But like Joe said, you can set the game anywhere you like. I think you can either take the game as it is with our figures, or just use it for the rule system for your own world. Either way, there's some great gaming to be had.
-
I hope we've breached the next spend goal as I really want to add the major demon to my pledge. :D
-
The book looks really nice!
And now to something completely different ;) Could we get more detail information about the campaign system, please? We know that wizards can learn new spells/cast them more easily, but I am wondering about the general concept of campaigns. Is there for example something like the underdog system in Mordheim?
Any bit of info from Nick or Joe? I am excited about Frostgrave, but not sure which level to choose as we don't know that much about some important aspects of the game.
-
A few words about the campaign system - wizards gain experience points, xps translate into levels. A wizard playing a normal game in which he does pretty well can expect to gain a couple of levels per game. Each level means a new spell, reduced casting roll, or an increased stat. The apprentices improve as their wizard does. Treasure is rolled for after each game - could be new money, spells books, potions, scrolls, magic weapons or armour, or other magic items.
Money can be exchanged for goods and services - such as new or improved soldiers, upgrades to a wizard's base, or potentially buying magical treasures.
There is no specific underdog system. This was something I discussed a lot with the editor and monitored closely with the playtesters. In truth, most people didn't think it was necessary. Although wizards gain levels quickly, it takes a long time before those differences make a major impact on overall quality. Even in games where people were bringing a fresh gang into an established campaign, they never felt over-matched. That said, I am still working on this and developing a system where more experienced gangs also have picked up a few 'enemies' - essentially non-player monsters that might attack them during the game to help balance out badly uneven gangs. If there is enough outcry for this, I'll publish it online.
I am hopeful that the campaign system is one of the features people will really like. I wanted to make it so that people could really get into the character of their wizard and chart his progress along with his gang.
Oh, also, for those who like such things - there is a way that wizards can essentially 'win' a campaign, by finding the secret of transcendence...
-
Oh, also, for those who like such things - there is a way that wizards can essentially 'win' a campaign, by finding the secret of transcendence...
Hah, that sounds pretty cool. Actuall yhaving a defined end point is a nice thing, as I see it. One of the problems I keep running into with Mordheim (and other, similar) campaigns is that they inevitably fizz out. Having a goal to stride for should solve that. In theory.
Thanks for sharing the pictures of the book - certainly looking forward to picking through it. Between this and the Fightin' fungi book and miniatures that is also set to ship in next month, I'll be a busy guy. Good thing I am in the middle of exams. oh, wait... ::)
-
I went in level 5 too.
What kind of non-player monsters can we expect in the setting? I want to check my unpainted lead for some that might be useful for the game.
-
Wow. The layout and pictures of the book look great. Being more tempted to get into this!
-
What kind of non-player monsters can we expect in the setting? I want to check my unpainted lead for some that might be useful for the game.
6 types of undead (skeletons, zombies, ghouls etc.).
9 types of animal, including the fabled 'white gorillas' and the previously shown Ice Toad. Generally, think cold climes.
3 types each of construct (small, medium, large) and demon (imp, minor, major). If you really want to cause chaos, give demons spells!
4 miscellaneous creatures (including my favourite - Snow Trolls).
Essentially, anything you have in your lead pile can probably find a home, even if there is no specific category for it. Even if there are no quick 'counts-as' options, you should be able to use one of the existing monsters as a starting point. As the wandering monsters are a threat to all players, it's easy enough to build something from scratch without worrying too much about balance (between players, if not within the scenario!) - unless you create a super-duper Undead monster for a game in which your opponent has "Control Undead", you're not going to go too far wrong.
Oh, and then there's Thaw of the Lich Lord...
-
Joe, the info on campaign is very much appreciated! I feel perfectly fine with the fact only wizards can get higher level. Magic items seem to me enough to differentiate petty soldiers :) I am really happy that Frostgrave doesn't seem to be "Mordheim on ice" and goes its own way. I am also fan of uncomplicated rule sets so another plus for me there!
You've mentioned something about camps/some kind of bases for warbands. Could you say a little bit about their role in the campaign?
---
And thanks for the new info on monsters as well!
-
I also wrote one of the scenarios specifically so I could use this figure!
Basically, as wizards get a bit more powerful, some get tired of making the trek from the boomtowns which surround Frostgrave and like to establish a base on the outskirts of the city. Basically, what type of building you choose has different effects - Necromancers who set up in old crypts have better access to 'spare parts' and the like. Wizards can then upgrade their bases with various equipment like summon circles. These tend to give bonuses to certain spells that are usually cast before or after a game.
-
Are these camps just part of the fluff, or will they appear on the gaming table as well?
Will it be possible to raid someone else' camp?
-
The camps will basically be off-screen. I do want to do some rules for base-raids, but that will have to wait for a future supplement.
-
I really like this new stuff you share with us. Camps sound like nice little mechanism. Level 3, here I go :)
I also own the Reaper worm so I'm looking forward to playing the special scenario. How many scenarios are actually included in the main rulebook?
-
I also own the Reaper worm[...]
One? Bro, do you even worm? :D Since you can get them as Reaper Bones for a small price i got myself four. Really love them too.

Thanks for the info on creatures. Guess I will paint up some undead then.
-
This have gone completely under my radar! Looks lovely, well done Nick, Joe and all sculpters (and that Bullywug fellow who did the painting - nice to see some new talent emerge).
Many of the wizard/apprentice pairs are lovely. I find it hard to resist jumping in with both feet first! God knows I have more than enough wizards to pull any game I'd ever play of this off without breaking a sweat... still, some of those guys are great!
-

I realized I do need more wizards in my collection when I saw it. ;D
-
I went all in. I got mine form Brigade in the States. Lon has listed the extras on the site, but no link to see what they look like. Anyone know how to get images so I can buy some of the xtras.
-
I think part of what drew me into this is that it's as close as you are ever going to get to a golden age of foundry sculptors reunion. It must be fun for them to be on a single project again.
-
Hey guys, I just posted up a blog about creating a new wizard for Frostgrave: http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/sancrief-wizard-of-frostgrave.html
Meet Sancrief, last member of the Brothers of the Rose.

Thanks for posting Joe!
Can anyone point me in the direction of the most comprehensive description of the rules? The whole premise and warband building sounds good, but that's mostly meta game details. I would like to read a little about scenarios and what kind of goal mechanics there are (if any). How do combat work, both melee and ranged? Where in lies the important decisions during a game? Would be great if I could find any info regarding that somewhere.
-
The Necromancer is the best choice for me. Any plans for making skeleton warriors?
-
We've added Mantic Game's Skeletons to our Nickstarter extras, so there are some very nice ones to buy right now.
The second book of Frostgrave deals with Undead more. We have a little surprise planned in regards to Undead for that book, don't want to say too much as it's still in development. It'll be great news for people who've bought into Frostgrave figures.
We've just hit the 5th Spend Goal. Hurrah

One more question. My local shop (Atlántica Juegos in Spain), offers me to join the Nickstarter's campaing of Frostgrave. Can I access the Nickstarter extras if I'll make the preorder with them?

You are certainly a master of suspence, Nick :)
We've just hit the 5th Spend Goal. Hurrah
Great! Is there any chance you could offer individual miniatures - at least during the Nickstarter? For example, I would like to get a couple of those crazy ice toads, but have few leopard-ish miniatures already in my collection.
Also, the ranger and treasure hunter are still missing. Just saying ;)
-
Backed!
I've been in on nicks other starters and they've all been filled on time and the models are great.
Just added all the spend goal models too.

Jim

Hey guys, I have just posted a little Frostgrave battle report on my blog. Not that I want to ruin the suspense, but it's 'little' because my warband got rolled over in a hurry!

So even though the rules are not out yet, just in the thought of tinkering, if there ay reason that the rules would not work for larger games - aka more figs on a side?
-
And, further to Joe's blog post, there's a post-game breakdown on my blog too, which might offer some slightly different viewpoints of the post-game sequence ('cos victory will do that... sorry, Joe):
http://www.plasticmalpractice.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/thursday-bloody-thursday.html

Also, the ranger and treasure hunter are still missing. Just saying ;)
The plastic box has loads of pieces to build a variety of Rangers and Treasure Hunters.
So even though the rules are not out yet, just in the thought of tinkering, if there ay reason that the rules would not work for larger games - aka more figs on a side?
You could, I suppose, but it'd get more unwieldy. Also, most of your soldiers would be on their own without much in the way of magical support. My thinking would be to add a second apprentice, but that's changing the dynamic of the game quite considerably and I'd not put money on it being without its flaws!
Oddly, Joe and I were just talking about going the other way with 'elite' warbands - playing it with a Wizard, and Apprentice and no more than 4 of the 'top-end' soldiers - Knights, Barbarians, Marksmen and the like - for more of an 'adventuring party' and less of a 'warband' feel.
-
Nice writeup, guys! So, I saw on Smith's blog he mentioned that only the wizards gain experience? So, does that mean that your henchmen basically stay the same, save for improving equipment? Does the apprentice gain experience?
-
There's a trickle-down effect - your Apprentice is beholden to his Wizard for magical training, so if the Wizard learns a new spell, he teaches it to the Apprentice, who can then use it too. If the Wizard improves in casting a spell, he passes that improved effectiveness onto his Apprentice. Similarly, the Apprentice's stats are derived from the Wizard's, so if a stat increases for one, so does it for both your characters - a Wizard improving in Willpower has clearly learned new resistance techniques that are then passed on.
Soldiers, as Joe has posted previously (I think), do not gain experience. A Thug is always a lowly grunt warrior. If you want a henchman to be promoted or to improve, it's as simple as paying the fee for a different class. So, a Thug (let's call him Geoff) is removed from the warband after a couple of battles and replaced with a Knight - that Knight could be a completely different mercenary, hired for 100 gold, or it could be that the Wizard has put some money into developing Geoff, buying new arms and armour and getting him trained up to be a much more potent fighter - in game terms it's no different. Stats and equipment define the soldier classes - the way you explain warband changes gives you the character development!
-
That is a pretty cool feature, makes bookkeeping easier. Having everyone gain experience, like in Mordheim, was fun, but could sometimes be a bit clunky, especially for henchmen. Especially since a henchman could just as easily improve a statistic that doesn't matter (like ballistic skill for a swordsman), it lead to some imbalances.
I think I would like that change. Thanks for the clarification!
-
Very enjoyable (post)battle reports! With better understanding of the game itself, I am starting to like especially the initiative system and the possibilities of spell interaction. The use of Telekinesis was pretty cool and reminded me I also loved the use of Fog spell to block Wizard Eye which was described in this old battle report: http://corblogme.blogspot.cz/2014/01/frostgrave-playtest-3.html
The plastic box has loads of pieces to build a variety of Rangers and Treasure Hunters.
This is certainly true, but a thief could be made from the plastic pieces too :) I think that ranger and treasure hunter deserve a special figure at least as much as him. Both have great potential.
As my question about offering individual miniatures remained without answer, I take it as a no :)

It'll be easier to talk to us about the Ice Toads after the launch. We've hundreds of Frostgrave orders to deal with in July, trying to sort out one weird choice order would just be a pain in the behind.

Quite understandable, thank you Nick!

Are there certain types of wizards that can summon constructs? There such cool models and I still can't decide which school to go for so this may swing it for me.

Got to say that seeing the figures now and the articles have sold this to me. Looks like I know what my birthday present to myself in June will be. :)
Always glad to see some more Mike Owen and Copplestone sculpted figures out there.

Than you have chosen the path of the Enchanter! o_o
"Enchanters are hands-on wizards, who work their magic by implanting it in objects or people. Many Enchanters are also craftsmen, such as carpenters or sculptors, who work their magic into the pieces they create."
If you click on individual pictures on this website http://nstarmagazine.com/FROSTGRAVE.htm, you can see information about all branches of magic.
-
I like that battle report - this is sounding more interesting as a game the more I find out.
-
Enchanters are the main 'construct' guys. But most other Wizards can choose this spell as a secondary. We've made a flesh golem as a Construct, we thought a Necromancer would hardly likely to be fiddling with bits of wood and string, so this would be a better model for grimmer wizards, that figure will appear later on.

Hey Nick, this has probably been asked before but I haven't found the info yet.
Will all the unlocked "extras" like the little demons, the animal companions or the banshee, be available to the public after the Nickstarter ends? I am supporting the Nickstarter, but can't go all in at the moment, so I'm hoping to add stuff at a later stage.
-
Is anyone else having problems with this Nickstarter?
I have tried to get in on this, but I do not recieve any confirmation emails, nor any acces to choose wizards and extras. I have tried asking for help via PM and Email. So far unsucesfull so now I am trying here.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem?
-
Before you can purchase extras you need to have purchased a wizard level. Once you've done this you will recieve an e-mail with a notification of your purchase and a link (and password) to the pages for the extras that are available.
If you are purchasing a wizard level with only one wizard (up to level 3, off the top of my head) you select which wizard pack you want by leaving the name in the comments box on the order process.
-
I popped into Northstar yesterday (I was just driving past and the siren-like call of miniatures lured me in) and Nick had a pre-release copy of the Frostgrave rules that he kindly let me have a look over.
It's very attractive with lots of beautiful colour pictures and the hardback format is really nice.
I can offer no insight into the rules or mechanics I'm afraid (and as my opponents will testify won't be able to do so even when I've owned the rules for several months) but it all looks splendid and I'm sorely tempted.
There will be demos at Partizan at the end of the month I understand.
He'd also just taken delivery of the largest bag of D20 I've ever lain eyes on.

D'oh, I missed that :(

Yes apparently so did I. But I still have had no confirmation mail. Nor has any money been pulled from my account. So I suspect something must have gone wrong somewhere...

Hi Dr Zombie
Have you checked your Spam Folder? We've emailed your confirmation, link to the extras page and password three times. If you still haven't got anything, I can put the link and pass word on a PM here.
We do have your order.
Nick
-
The Nickstarter is just a pre-order program. All the figures will be available to buy after the 20th of July, both from our mail order and retail stores. The Nickstarter allows you to get in early, save a bit of money and get some freebies.
It is also going a massive way towards helping the tooling cost of the plastic Frostgrave Soldiers. I am very grateful and appreciative of that, so thank you to all the Nickstarter participants. :)

I had the same problem last weekend - I got an order reference number but no e-mail. I waited a week to see whether anything appeared on my credit card balance, but nothing. I re-checked the e-mail address that I have saved with North Star and it's correct. There's nothing in my spam folder either.
Nick - I'll wait until after the bank holiday weekend, and see if anything has turned up by then before I contact you with details. No rush - the 15th June deadline for free shipping is still a few weeks away!

Nice to see that I'm not the only one starting to think about making terrain. ;)
There will be snow, ice and icicles galore.
How much of the city remains? According to The Tales of the Frozen City blurb a thousand years have passed.
Long ago, the great city of Felstad sat at the centre of a magical empire. Its towering spires, labyrinthine catacombs and immense libraries were the wonder of the age, and potions, scrolls and mystical items of all descriptions poured from its workshops. Then, one cataclysmic night, a mistake was made. In some lofty tower or dark chamber, a foolish wizard unleashed a magic too powerful to control. A storm rose up, an epic blizzard that swallowed the city whole, burying it deep and leaving the empire as nothing more than a vast, frozen wasteland. The empire shattered, and the magic of the world faded. As the centuries came and went, Felstad passed from history to legend and on into myth. Only a few wizards, clinging to the last remnants of magical knowledge, still believed that the lost city had ever actually existed. But their faith was rewarded.
After a thousand years, the fell winter has passed. The snows have receded, and Felstad has been uncovered. Its buildings lie in ruins, overrun by undead creatures and magical constructs, the legacy of the empire's experiments. It is an evil, dangerous place. To the few hardy souls who inhabit the nearby villages, the city has acquired a new name, ‘Frostgrave', and it is shunned by all right-thinking people. For those who seek power and riches, however, it is an unparalleled opportunity, a deadly maze concealing secrets of knowledge long forgotten...
We have a couple of pictures from the interview with Dmitry Burmak (https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/Meet_The_Frostgrave_Artist/), the Frostgrave artist.

How do I make large blocks of semitransparent ice with stuff in it best?
-
How much of the city remains? According to The Tales of the Frozen City blurb a thousand years have passed.
Well, there are quite a few impresive stone building older then that out there, which are in relatively good shape. Permafrost, assuming a lack of glacial movement, should have preserved them better then most examples I can think of.

Most of the city is there, just broken ;) I think Osgiliath on ice is the best example of ruin level. Hopefully Joe can give a good suggestion though.
I've been collecting up reference pics for a bit now, will hopefully get the chance to start soon.
For glacial ice pockets, I'm intending to use tinted clear resin in the woodland scenic rock moulds. Dropping things in as it sets will show things in the ice and I intend to experiment with propping ruins into them too so I can try and achieve ice locked stone sections.
-
The artwork is really selling me on this.

Yes, what really damages buildings is water penetrating then freezing. Just burying in snow and Ice without thawing and refreezing wouldn't cause as much damage though enough snow on a roof could cause it to collapse in under the weight.
-
Anyone any suggestions on how to do snow on bases/snow-covered terrain? I'm debating trying to come up with some sort of removable snow/ice/general wintery scheme which so figures can shift into non-snowy climes too.

Easy way, get snow flock and pour onto board, tip back into pot after game.
Harder way, snow drifts around buildings can be done easily removable by putting a flat edge on the side that goes against the building. Snow on top is more difficult but you can do it, put cling film over the scenery and then do a layer of PVA and tissue where you want the snow. Then do your snow effect over that, once dry the snow pieces should be fairly easy to pull up off the terrain and the cling film can just be pulled/trimmed away. Keep track of where the bits go and you should be able to slot it on and off the terrain as needed.

Okay, I have started thinking about my Frostgrave team of looters.
Would it be too big a drawback having Wizard, Apprentice and three barbarians? I know it's very low count but... you know. I have always liked the barbarian theme in fantasy (I blame Conan the Barbarian movie, Heroes of Might and Magic II and Diablo II). Also it could be interesting to have a wizard and 5 barbarians...
-
It can work but you have no one to snatch treasure and run off with it, you'll be at a definate disadvantage until you'd made enough money to buy more men. You'd be better off going with two barbarians and some barbarian style trackers/hunters as lower level troops.
-
Will the frostgrave plastic minis mix well with the fireforge tuetonic infantry and knights??

My understanding is they are made by the same sculptor, so my guess would be yes.
-
Ooh, that's great to hear.
There's a particular head on the Gripping Beast Arab cavalry sprue that really stuck out to me as wizardly, so I think I'll probably kitbash a wizard from plastics too, but I'm very excited for the possibilities with the plastic henchmen.
-
Right guys, I just wanted to jump in with this one and hopefully I'm not stepping on Joe or Nick's toes, sorry if so. I just wanted to clarify something that has already been said or alluded to but perhaps not clearly enough.
It's about the Necromancer, I keep reading people talking about getting their undead figures sorted etc and wanted to avoid potential dissapointment. In Frostgrave (currently, no idea what's in the Liche book), the Necromancer is a wielder of death magic and while he does have access to a raise dead type spell, he isn't going to be leading a group of undead into battle.
That being said, undead figures are certainly useful as monsters encountered while searching for treasure etc (and the Necromancer has a controlspell too). One of our group is intending to run an evil Necromancer as his wizard shortly and is going to use Undead figures as his Warband, they'll just 'count as' the normal equivalent in the same way as has been suggested for Elves and Dwarves etc.
-
Joe is having a spot of holiday, so I'll be filling in on the question-answering front for a bit.
Would it be too big a drawback having Wizard, Apprentice and three barbarians? I know it's very low count but... you know.
As said by Dewbakuk, it'd put you at a rather large disadvantage right off the bat. Joe posted a battle report a few pages back that highlights the exact problem - his Knight ended up caught in combat with a number of my Thugs. Knights are one of the best, most well-armoured henchman types, while Thugs are the worst. Numbers overwhelmed him in short order. Same goes for 3 Barbarians - even without the problem of carrying treasure, you'll be hard-pressed to avoid being outnumbered and picked off one by one.
The soldier names shouldn't limit your choice of model beyond equipment load out - a 'Knight' can be a barbarian warchief, a mail-clad paladin, a mercenary captain etc. The name of a soldier type is just a convenient shorthand so that players have a common reference for stats and equipment; it's not supposed to be a definition of (or limitation on) the characters you can field.
How much of the city remains?
As much or as little as you need! It's a city of wizards, so ruins, complete buildings, towers that reach into the sky etc. are all fine. Same goes for the amount of snow and vegetation. If in doubt: a wizard did it!
That said, as with any small skirmish game, plenty of terrain and limited lines of sight are ideal.
-
Got a look at the demon and imp today. Have to say I have loved all the models so far and am in at lvl 5, but these struck me as particularly uninspiring. I think I wil be hunting around for an alternative. Is the imp supposed to be a human sized lesser demon or more like a traditional small mini demon a few feet tall?
-
Hello, I'm diving in and out of this thread and suspect I may have missed something - what role does morale have? On the AAR where the knight gets cornere, there's a reference to the survivors deciding to run for it - was that a dramatisation of a failed morale test or us this morale free? I presume some spells cause fear or monster terror, so I'm curious. Cheers!
-
Demons of any kind can be pretty much anything you like, so finding alternatives shouldn't prove too difficult.
Imps are weaker, and tend to be smaller, while Minor Demons are around man-height and Major Demons potentially far larger. Then again, a Major Demon could manifest as a floating skull or a physically perfect human just as easily as a colossal monster.
-

Some spells will affect a model in that way, and the Will stat comes into play when resisting it.
The survivors cutting and running in the battle report, however, was at the player's choice, not based on a morale test or anything - if you really want to hold out in the face of mounting losses, you can - but you will struggle to hold together a viable warband for the next game.
Given the high stakes and obsessive hunt for treasure that motivates the war ands in Frostgrave, it's up to the players - not the luck of the die - how determined they want to be.

What? Next you'll tell me the summoner can't summon demons... ;)
*puts skeletons back in the box* :'(

O.K. I caved and joined the fun of the Nickstarter today - my first. :)

This is just what I will do when I get my necromancer. The skeletons are already on the painting table...

I am getting more and more tempted by this, but DO I really need another gaming project, now.... ::)
-
I am getting more and more tempted by this, but DO I really need another gaming project, now.... ::)
Well, I'd wager that your Vikings could combine with a Wizard and Aprentice for a very neat warband (The Enchanters seem to fit pretty well with a Nordic aesthethic in particular). :D
I am doing something similar, where I intend for my Frostgrave warband(s) to be part of a cross-over Lion Rampant and Crescent and Cross Danish Crusader-themed army.
And they'll all also be used (quite possibly primarily) for Open Combat and Song of Blades and Heroes.
-
I am getting more and more tempted by this, but DO I really need another gaming project, now.... ::)
I'm not planning to do many new figures either(OK to start with...) - your LotR and GoB minis may give you enough for a warband or two plus some unfriendly undead.
Also, I remember seeing your GoB battles on a board with pine trees and ruins - even without snow, that would be perfect.
You may find you have a game with just three or four figures to paint?
-
*puts skeletons back in the box* :'(
Box not those skeletons! While it may not be intended to run warbands chock full of undead monstrosities (though, as said above, you can absolutely built a warband that way if you like - provided your opponent knows that Zombie 1 counts as a Thug, Skeleton 4 as an Archer etc.), there are plenty of things running around the ruins of Frostgrave, causing trouble for all players. So some skeletons (or zombies, ghouls, snow trolls etc.) will be a useful resource. Especially for a Necromancer.
I am doing something similar, where I intend for my Frostgrave warband(s) to be part of a cross-over Lion Rampant and Crescent and Cross Danish Crusader-themed army.
I've been toying with something similar, using the soldiers box as the basis for a larger force (Wildlings). My plans don't tend to work out that well (I'm usually distracted by a new project), but it is tempting...
-
Thank you for the reply about morale, Smith. I can see I'm not the only one opting for enchanter for that norse look....
-
I may have missed it in the bowels of this thread, and I didn't have any luck elksewhere either, but does anyone know if there maybe already is a gameplay video out there?
I'm really tempted by Frostgrave, as my friends have never found a fantasy skirmish game we all liked (I have Mordheim, but it keeps getting vetoed).
So; if there's a gameplay video to be found somewhere, it might be just the thing to convince them to accompany me on the perilously frozen road to Frostgrave...
-
What school of magic would be best to represent alchemists and the like? Got the beginnings of an idea for a warband... I think :)
Thanks
Blofeld

Seeing that the game isn't out yet, the studio miniatures not yet all painted, and the author just recently published a battle report I dare say no. We'll have to wait a little longer, I fear. ;)

Oh, yes, everything I do these days is intended for multiple uses (my Vikings already destined for GoB, SAGA, and my D&D Fantasy Vikings project with my daughters).
I'm not planning to do many new figures either(OK to start with...) - your LotR and GoB minis may give you enough for a warband or two plus some unfriendly undead.

Well, yes - although I would probably need to do 2 warbands, anyway, as I don't have a lot of opponents to choose from around here. Hmmmm...
-
What school of magic would be best to represent alchemists and the like?
Hmm... There are useful Witch spells, but the Thaumaturge offers healing. Some of the Enchanter or Elementalist attack spells would also make sense from an exploding potion point-of-view.

Sorry, nothing as yet... There will be reviews coming soon in a couple of the gaming magazines, and I'm sure other people will post reviews once the game is out.

You will receive a link and code to access the extra items page. It will be send to the email you used for paypal. Think some sort of survey will be send to choose your class of mages. Not sure on this though.

Many reviews (certainly the magazine ones) should pre-date not just the release of the book, but also the end of the Nickstarter. So, while they might not be presented as a video, you should still have plenty of time to check them out before the Nickstarter ends. I'll be posting as many as I can up here.
As for current previews, Joe (the author) posted a battle report a few pages back, if you've not yet seen that one.
-
Can't help with the video stuff, but for anyone going to Partizan on Sunday, I'll be helping with the Frostgrave demo table. Come by and I'll happily run you through the game :)

Well, it isn't a Kickstarter, but a Nickstarter. The similar name creates some confusion, despite them being rather different things.
You have preordered stuff, simply put. The only tricky thing is that the more preorders they get the more money they can put to good use for other stuff.
You should get a confirmation mail with a link and a code to see and order that other stuff.
The instructions I saw was to write whatever wizard you wanted in the comments.
I'm looking forward to see what more stuff there'll be to unlock as the Large Construct should be achieved later this week at the current rate.

I can take some pics, someone else would have to do video as I'll be playing/talking to people. Plus while my phone does perfectly good video footage I don't think it could do a whole game. ;)

yeah, like a trailer. Spike Jonze meets Wes Anderson, with miniatures! lol

I was thinking make them look like merchants/other wizards, the powerful people who crossed the necromancer and got turned into mindless goons.

Supposedly different things. Kickstarter for miniatures has really just turned into a preorder system itself hasn't it. I haven't got the link yet but imagine it will come in time. Just patience needed I guess :)
-

Absolutely, I think that's why Northstar goes with this honest approach instead of abusing crowdfunding.
But it still works differently - you haven't pledged any money, we have paid for the goods. ;)
Realizing I have the above Mordheim figure (and it's dreg friend) makes me think about making a necromancer.
How are monsters handled?
Are they programmed or managed by the players somehow?
Entirely random encounters or dependent on the scenario?
Could you make a sort of one player scenario fighting just monsters?

Either as scenario encounters or randomly generated when finding treasure.
Simple programming, works rather well. Particularly satisfying when a big bad one turns up in a spot where only your opponent is :D
Both ;)
Would be very easy to do. In fact I would be very surprised if Joe and Phil don't write one and put it up on the Osprey Wargaming Resources Page, given it's now been asked a few times.

I was even thinking about borrowing the Strange Aeons schtick. Give the opponent a budget based on the value of your band, and let her spend it depending on what scenario you play. (And taking turns doing that.)

There's no specific scenario (as yet), but it'd be really simple to do with the material in the rulebook. Here are my initial thoughts on how to go about setting up a monsters vs. warband encounter.
Scenario: The Mausoleum
In the basic version, two skeletons per player start on the board, and one additional skeleton appears from a central building at the end of each turn.
- To make it tougher for a single player, simply replace the skeletons with ghouls.
- If sticking with skeletons, I'd probably start with 6 starting on the board and have 2 reinforcements every turn.
- If you want to make it even harder, roll for each skeleton reinforcement - on an even number, it's a (tougher) armoured skeleton.
- If that's still not tough enough for your warband, or if you have a more experienced gang, add a random chance to bring on a single powerful monster (a vampire or wraith) as the skeletons' commander. Maybe link its appearance to a particularly powerful spell roll (e.g. beat a casting roll by 10+) to have it enter as a reinforcement alongside the skeletons at the end of that turn (that'll make casting those low-level spells really risky!).
Or, if you have a large monster collection, and you want to make it really potentially tough, roll on the Random Encounter Table for each soldier in your warband:
- Per soldier costing less than 100 gc - roll one Level 1 encounter
- Per soldier costing 100 gc or more - roll one Level 2 encounter
- Per wizard or apprentice - roll two Level 2 encounters OR one Level 3 encounter
Caveat: This may get out of hand. VERY quickly!

Oh F it; I just went in at level 4! 8)
If anything, I'll be owning 20 wizards and 20 henchmen with mittens plus another hardback book on the shelf :D
Seriously though; I'm really excited about this; can't wait to start toying around with all those spells and scenarios. Oh and the metal and plastic won't be unwelcome either of course... ;D

Mmmm... Pegasus building walls are assembled, ruined and painted. Had some thoughts about doing snowdrifts round them.
25mm/1" polystyrene sheet - mark round the outline of the building footprint. Cut inside and out, as I've not based them yet.
So end up with three pieces - a drift round the outside of the buildings, another inside and a third for the tops of the walls (I'm leaving them without roofs, and the wall tops are flat).
Then shape like drifting snow and cover with "snow mix".
Thoughts?
-
So, if I understand correctly, your snowdrifts are seperate, to be put around/on the building when required?
I've been thinking about the same solution myself, but have not yet given it much detailed thought. I think the idea itself is really solid though; one building, two settings/seasons; very economical indeed... 8)

Correct - completely separate.
Each pair of snowdrifts will be shaped to one building, as each building has a unique outline.
It means that there's no snow on windowsills, for example, but it's a compromise solution. Lack of storage space means I prefer to make generic buildings, and most of my terrain covers several genres/periods.
So - great minds ;D

I find it extremely frustrating that the GW Osgiliath ruins arent available anymore. I went to the local games store today but even he had sold his last dust-covered box. :?
The Warlord ruined farm could work though.

I've read that reboot/destruction of the Warhammer World will have a lot of ruined building kits released by GW.
Hopefully at a reasonable price.

Thanks, that looks interesting. Also the glimpse of the mausoleum scenario.
Hm, so monsters have levels?
I suppose you could make a scenario where the opponent gets to choose X level 1, Y level 2 and Z level 3 critters, and then play a scenario against you?
-
Monsters don't really have levels - that's just how the Random Encounter table divides them up. So, the monsters found in Level 1 random encounters will tend to be weaker (or fewer in number) than Level 2, and the really powerful things will be in Level 3. Or just ignore the table entirely and choose what you want to field (I do)!
You could play against an opponent using just monsters, but as that isn't the focus of the game, it'd probably take a bit of experimentation to find a balance that's enjoyable for both players.
-
If I were to go into pre-made terrain I would choose 4Ground. Pre-painted houses rocks! I've got only one (japanese hutt) but looking at the pictures their fantasy 28mm are very promising.
-

I like it for a couple of reasons, from my experience of this sort of games:
- It gives variation to just battling a more or less equal band. Variation is good.
- You can make up for big variations in power level - letting a less powerful band battle an equivalent monster congregation rather than getting beaten by a much more powerful band. This gives them experience and stuff so they can compete with others.
- You can have more cool story driven scenarios and campaigns.
I like both varieties. But best I like having both. :)
I'll go for experimenting once I have the game in my lily white paws.
-
Aargh... I am on the verge of plummeting in... o_o
My wife will probably strangle me, though...
-
rather than getting beaten by a much more powerful band. This gives them experience and stuff so they can compete with others.
I have yet to see this be an issue, I can see a really advanced Wizard who has managed to collect lots of magic weapons for his troops being a problem for a new Warband, but any player coming in with a new warband should be given some levels and gold to catch up a bit anyway. Because only the wizard advances, the rest of the troops remain at something of a level (although some are better than others of course). I've seen games where a starting warband has taken on one with a few games and levels under it's belt, and because the player has stayed focussed to the scenario etc*, the new warband has won the game.
*I have a personal suspicion that in such games the more advanced warbands player gets cocky and often tries to beat the enemy warband rather than fulfil the scenario.
-
You are probably right, I'm merely extrapolating from other games.
-
Well it seems that casting spells is pretty important. As far as I understand from reports, any +1 to main magic ability improves casting of the spell for 5% (you need to roll less on d20 dice to succesfully cast a spell)
It seems to me that not even money but even abilities needs to be scaled, if you need balance. However there is no real need for balancing the game for the newbie. Moreorless if you are new wizard you will use your troops very carefully, so give him the chance to choose scenario and give him opportunity to place more objectives and the balance will go on. Newbie wizard will be very carefull to choose right place to fight and it gives him the adventage untill he will be balanced with other.
What I see as very problematic is: what if your people die, you loose the battle and bring zero gold? Your are screwed, you oponent will have larger army, more gold and equip... You can probably set up the scenario as I mentioned before.
The experience system looks good: It seems I will get my old DnD Elven Bladesinger Fighter/Mage with some experience spent ;-)
But we are all "cooking from water" without actual knowledge of rules. There should be rules for it...
-
While I definitely agree that even a new warband will be in with a decent chance against a veteran gang, if you want to give a late starter a bit of a boost, it'd be really quite simple...
Wizards have levels. Each level provides EITHER -1 casting cost to any one spell, OR +1 to any one stat, OR the opportunity to learn a new spell (note that the grimoire for the new spell must be found or purchased first - one cannot simply decide to spend a level to learn spell X - for the purposes of this balancing act, I'd suggest rolling on the random spell table). So, Wizards (and through them, Apprentices) can be balanced simply by comparing their level.
Even though they are discovered at random in the ruins, magic items, scrolls and potions come with a purchase price, so figuring out how to balance them would be as simple as working out how much a warband's non-standard equipment costs, then allocating the same amount to the new gang.
Same goes for soldiers - if the veteran warband has henchmen costing a total of 780 gold, then give the same amount to the new gang.
So, a bit of accountancy is required, but it shouldn't take too long to do.
What I see as very problematic is: what if your people die, you loose the battle and bring zero gold? Your are screwed, you oponent will have larger army, more gold and equip... You can probably set up the scenario as I mentioned before.
An extreme scenario, but highly unlikely - in the game Joe reported on last week, I enjoyed a dominant victory, taking 4 of 6 treasure tokens, knocking out his Wizard, Apprentice and a couple of henchmen, and only losing a single low-level henchman of my own.
In the post-game accounting, I came away with:
- 440 gold.
- A magic staff.
- 2 grimoires containing new spells.
- 2 experience levels (one spent on learning a new spell, and the other on improving an existing one).
- A fully recovered henchman.
Whereas Joe scored:
- 70 gold.
- A magic dagger.
- 3 scrolls (two kept, one sold for an additional 100 gold)
- 1 experience level (spent on increasing the Wizard's fighting ability)
- A wounded Knight (misses next game), two dead Thugs, and everyone else fully recovered.
So, despite having taken a mauling, Joe's gang still came away with something. The dead Thugs can be replaced cheaply and easily (a bit of luck there - the Knight dying would have been much more of a loss - but even then, enough gold was recovered to replace him if necessary).
The campaign and experience system is designed to keep everyone involved and to keep all warbands developing. Yes, victory nets you more than defeat, but that's the reward for good tactics and good luck!
-
Its about 600 Gold in Difference between two warbands only in soldiers, where you should have 4 more knights, Joe will have problem to get his guys back in line... Anyway it will be very interesting to see it alive. Now we could only speculate.
And as was said before - Who needs balance?
Thanks for clarification, I know how my dices works.
-
if the veteran warband has henchmen costing a total of 780 gold, then give the same amount to the new gang
I think the whole reason why someone plays campaign games where you develop a warband is to do just that... Taking that part away from a new warband seems backwards. The first few levels of advance are usually the most gratifying ones.
May I instead suggest that the stronger warband plays with a penalty, such as one or several models not participating due to any silly reason from personal quests to having come down with the flu. For instance, a model (or several) from the stronger warband have gone off on a scouting mission into the ruined city. One comes back, gravely wounded (miss "next" game, ie the current one) and says that Timbold the old fool fell down a well, broke his ankle, got knocked out and have some sort of parasite attached to his face and is now incapacitated, waiting to be rescued... The weaker warband and the stronger one fight over treasure but also to find Timbold. If the "enemy" gets Timbold, his Wizard can decide on whether to pay ransom or let him perish.
-
Thanks to Nick at Northstar, who got my ordering problems sorted out quickly.
Good to see the range of goodies in the "hidden" list for backers too - some old favourites from a range of manufacturers as well as all the new stuff. At this point, resistance is useless...
The bear model does look like it's having a massive shit though :D

Great; now that image is burnt in, and it won't go away! lol
And I so wanted a bear too...

Personally, I agree 100%, but I can see the appeal if it's one player entering a more developed campaign - better give him a one-time boost than force every other player to take on a handicap...

That approach would also work - and the above outline for calculating the difference between warbands could be used to figure out what resources to take away from the strong warband.
And as was said before - Who needs balance?
Exactly - balance, shmalance (in this context, that is!).
-
There are many ways to balance a new player coming in, really whatever is decided upon would work IMO. Mordheim just used experience bonuses after the battle - so if you are the underdog, you will get the XP bonus and will advance faster to catch up.
I don't really see how there could be any system that would allow for 'even' footing of a new vs veteran warband without some sort of handicap or underdog bonus.

Looks great, just need a higher resolution photo! ;)

The shield arm comes free of shields? Excellent!
I prefer to use my own shields with sculped on heraldry.
-
Higer Rez photo would be very nice
From this there seems to be
5 bodies
10 heads
2 crossbow arm sets
2 bow arm sets
3 one hand weapons
2 big weapons
a few bags and things
Its good to see separate shields - gives more left arm options, or is easier to add other shields.
-
They don't look that bad actually,I ound some of the facial expressions comical in my mind, never thought of head swapping ::)
I will get some when their out.

Yea, and with them being comparable with fire-forge this really is going to be a nice useful set!
-
Ooooh. Exciting. More plastic.
Yea, and with them being comparable with fire-forge this really is going to be a nice useful set!
Truthfully, I've intermixed components from all the main plastic manufacturers in my Game of Thrones figures - Fireforge, Perry, Gripping Beast, and Warlord - and they all fit together well enough that you'd never be able to tell the difference with the naked eye. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=62778.0

I make it 5 one handed weapons.

Would they work with the old mordheim Middenheimer bits? the heads and cloaks would make interesting for interesting options.

Probably not, I tried to use some of the mordheim bits on the FireForge figures a little while ago and the proportions were way off. Height etc was similar but hand and heads on the mordheim figures were enormous. Maybe I'm picky though ;)
-

Die Nick forget to send Richard Blood a Box of Plastic to Support this fantastic Range? There Are three rounds in the LAF Painters League left to use it for advertisement... ;) lol
-
The Mordheim plastics were great (that's where my Pirates of Roglaroon are from) but from a medeival perspective and ability to mix with other plastics these look like a whole new epoch.
As regards the progression / resource issue, I've found myself in a couple of Xbox games trapped in a vicious circle of failure to achieve objectives, leading to use of potions which can't be replaced because you don't get the treasure. In skyrim I resorted to hunting to generate some income, so much so I preferred hunting the moors to going off on adventures. Which is a long way of saying, stick at it, play the margins, get the resources and get back in the game. You'll look back on it as tough but that wizard will have a heck of a history.
-
Eagerly awaiting the arrival of these soldiers having plunged in with a level 3 order. Next purchase some fireforge and Perry to mix them with

Heh, I doubt even Richard is that fast :D
Got to have a look at the sprue this evening, very nice. It's only a test sprue so there are some casting issues to sort out on the plastic mould but they look good. Definately 5 hand weapons, plus there is an off hand dagger too. From the sounds of it it'll still be a while before production castings can be started.

As some of us are starting to think about appropriate scenery I wonder how the rules for it is.
Making good terrain to play in needs some consideration and knowledge of the game.
Is it a simple Good Going/Bad Going and Clear/Obscuring? Or is there more to it?
How long do you move? Is there any sort of coherence limit?
Jumping and climbing rules? Hiding?
Is shooting, and thus cover, powerful?
Anything else?
-
And I'm in at level 5
Too many goodies to pass up! Can't wait to get my brushes on them.
-
As long as you take pics, RJ! :D About time!
I am in with a lvl 3 at the moment. No need for the whole lot, but I am getting very excited. At first I was very unsure, but this drew me in like quicksand!

Movement is based on the Move stat. Move 6 = 6" movement. Every figure gets two actions per activation - if both are used for movement, the second one is halved. So, a Thug with Move 6 activates and decides to use both actions to cross the board - he moved 6" on the first action and 3" on the second for a total of 9".
Terrain is either normal, rough (ice, rubble, pools etc.) or vertical. Climbing or crossing rough terrain costs twice the movement (i.e. 1" can be scaled/crossed for every 2" spent). Falls of less than 3" can be controlled and the figure continues as normal. 3" or more, and damage is taken. Jumps from a standing start are limited to 1", otherwise distance jumped equals the distance used for a straight run-up. So, move 2.5" in a straight line, and you can jump 2.5". Maximum jump distance is 4".
There's no hiding mechanic per se - if you can be seen, you can be targeted. If you can't be seen, you can't. Shooting is just as lethal as any other form of combat - with advantageous conditions and a bit of luck, it can be really powerful. You will want plenty of cover though.
-
Sounds pleasingly straightforward :)

Heh, I doubt even Richard is that fast :D
He got the sprue from the perries at saturday (Tactica) and showed the first pics on Monday here. He is in Hamburg known as "Lightning Mc Blood" lol

I have the same problem.

I have the same problem.
I also didn't receive a confirmation initially (checked spam folder etc) but a quick email through north star website and a very quick and friendly response from Christine sorted it out :)

Thanks! Sounds good and simple.
Climbing and jumping rules allows more interesting terrain, so that's excellent.
I like the jumping rules. easy, but requires some effort (with no risk). You can easily make a chasm with many, but still limited, jump points.
You could have a fight on an ice wall. Just saying.
Platforms with access to others within climbing (some 3'', some 4'' apart) or jumping distance.

Simple yet pretty realistic. It also means more tactical choices. Well done!

Am I right in thinking there's a Frostgrave demo game at Partizan tomorrow?

This has given me a great excuse to get that dire bear from reaper I've been after for a while. However my cash won't allow it. Anyone know how big the bear from northstar is?
-
Am I right in thinking there's a Frostgrave demo game at Partizan tomorrow?
Yep, I'll be helping on the game.
-
What about rules for buildings? I have the old GW multi level tower. Would that be usable? What about going in and out of houses and such? I presume, as the game takes place in a ruined city, that some thought has gone into this, or are all the buildings assumed to be piles of rubble? What about caves or dungeons?
Thanks
-
Yep, I'll be helping on the game.
See you there :D

Most of the pics of models I've seen have round bases - is the game base-specific, or would models on square bases do as well?
And is the base size relevant?

Generally round bases are a lot better for skirmish games (where the models are not in formation).
If you have square bases and melee is defined by base contact you have to define what 'base contact' is, and it becomes trickier to judge. As is measuring.
With round bases there are no such difficulties.
Base sizes tend to be more forgivin, as long as all are the same size. Combining different sizes means that some are better at outnumbering (and harder to outnumber), and moving in terrain.
In friendly games these things should not really be a problem.
-

Cool. I'll be over for a look at some point and a chat with Nick. Shou t at me if I haven't introduced myself. ;)

Im in at level 3 now!!

Went to orcs nest and picked myself up some reaper bones wizards to start working on my warband! :)

IM in at lvl 3 but how do i order the extra stuff??

You'll get a code and a link. If it doesn't arrive (like it hasn't to a few people) just send northstar an email and they'll sort it out for you.

How long after ordering can you expect this ? I've placed my order yesterday morning and have yet to receive it - could the weekend be the reason ? BTW - I didn't even get an order confirmation.

It's not in the spam folder. I'll try to contact Northstar to try to figure out what went wrong. Thanks for the feedback.

Mine didn't arrive so I waited a couple of days and then emailed. It should have been the same time I believe. I didn't get a receipt either. Not in my junk either.
-
The weekend will play a part. The orders are manually confirmed so someone actually has to send out the confirmation e-mail. I would have thought that anything ordered Friday won't see a confirmation notice until next week. :D
-
Set up is done for the Frostgrave game at Partizan. I've taken some pics, unfortunately there's no data connection here so they'll have to wait until I get home this evening, sorry.

Looked great as well, and busy.
The plastics are really lovely, as are the metals.

Yeah the game, figures and new plastics looked excellent!!

Slightly better pitchewers of the soldier sprue.

Looks like a very useful kit, I'm sure I'll snag one once I get some other projects cleared.

Excellent, thanks for sharing. Many useful bits and they look nicely modelled.
Slightly GW-stylee outsize weapons, but plenty to work with for the enthusiastic plastic figure kitbasher... :)

A very busy day.
If this guy helped you learn the game I can only apologise ;)
Edit: Picture stolen from WSS Facebook page as I'm incapable of embedding a link apparently. There are pics of most of the games there.

Yeah, I even got a treasure too :D

So, some pics I managed to take. Including a couple of the assembled plastics, although they were just thrown together and not cleaned up properly >:( gives a good example though!

Looks great. :D
-
I've been after minis for a bandit group so the plastics suit that well
-
Demo game and the figures looked great! The plastics are Very Useful, with all their equipment and their raggedy style. Happy that I went in at Lvl 3, and I believe my Lincoln partners in crime are also taking the plunge.
Invested in some scatter scenics from Fenris and Ral Partha for Frostgrave at Partizan today... and a suitably gory Wendigo model from Fenris too.
-
I think if i can fish out those old empire crossbows and spears, i might finally have a use for the dark vengeance chaos cultists! sculpt on some new heads and fur and boom, travelling enchanter and his teams of fighting artists assistants!
-
Nice pictures.thanks for sharing.looking forward to getting my hands on those plastics

I don't think I'll be able to resist much longer o_o
I am planning to buy a lot of Ziterdes stuff this summer, and it should be perfect for this game as well as the other purposes...

level 5 done! :)

Looks great. I might just pick up some secret weapon game tiles now too.
Saw that we broke the 20K mark for the Nickstarter, so the giant golem is in! Will there be any other stretch goals? There's still nearly a month to go!
-
Anyone know if you can combine two pledge levels with the same shipping charge? I want to get a lvl 3, but a buddy is interested in a lvl 1... might as well ship them in the same package, no?

Once you get a pledge - you get access to a 'secret' webpage that lets you add stuff to your pledge - including the other pledges.
-

The board itself is the Secret Weapon gaming board which has stone pieces moulded on. The large terrain pieces are Gale Force Nine, the lengths of ruined walls with trees etc are all scratch built. The statues are metal figures stuck to blocks of wood with pillar/fountain pieces added.

From the FB page:
"I couldn't imagine a Necromancer with a Construct spell would want to mess about with hammer and nails, and bits of sacking, like the Enchanters would. So we've made the nastier Wizards a flesh Golem for their Construct spell. He'll come free to every Level three and above Wizard if we hit the next Spend Goal."
(Poor quality picture. Better to come, they say.)

Better confirm that. I think Nick mentioned something about not getting the treasure tokens if you just added another.
But I can have misunderstood.

Hi,
I know I am going to be very bold to ask this question but I am now working on thinking about my wizard. It's like preparing an RPG character for me. I am working on it's background and motivations and so on. I have not yet decided what school he is going to practice (although I narrowed it on three by now). Here comes the cheeky question: Can we know what is going to be the relationship between the schools? Will there be some "star" of magic schools (were it in ADnD or where?) determining which schools are in opposition to each other?
Thank you.

Excellent! Thank you so much for putting this together. Probably the only aspect of the game I've found missing in your review are the scenarios. Could you tell us something about them?

Sorry, pal – I'm just re-posting that review from the original site. I'm not the reviewer (it'd be a bit of a conflict of interest, if the editor reviewed the book!).
I did post some information on one of the sample scenarios a few pages back – The Mausoleum – which should give you some idea of the scenarios.
The basic scenario, used with a bit of imagination, will give you the classic range of mundane scenarios – 'skirmish', 'raid', 'ambush' etc. – so the 10 special scenarios in the book focus on the unique elements of the setting, and are examples of what can be done with a magic-saturated environment – special encounters and locations that show how to incorporate the Bestiary into games or add something bizarre and (inevitably) dangerous to an encounter: living statues, angry demons, magic null-fields, malfunctioning teleportation magic etc.
Between those and the rumours scattered throughout the book, there should be plenty of seeds for developing your own unique encounters. Come to think of it, there are some cool possibilities in the fiction anthology too (shameless plug!) – fighting on a (mostly) frozen river springs to mind...
Hi,
I know I am going to be very bold to ask this question but I am now working on thinking about my wizard. It's like preparing an RPG character for me. I am working on it's background and motivations and so on. I have not yet decided what school he is going to practice (although I narrowed it on three by now). Will there be some "star" of magic schools (were it in ADnD or where?) determining which schools are in opposition to each other?
Thank you.
I don't think I could get away with posting that whole section of the rules, I'm afraid – sorry! Every school has three aligned schools, five neutral schools, and one opposed school – it's all in balance, and outlined in the Wizard creation chapter of the rulebook.
Wizards can learn any spell, regardless of school, so a Thaumaturge could cast a Sigilist spell with little difficulty, and an Elementalist spell with a bit of effort. He would, however, have to either get really lucky with the die roll, channel his own health into boosting the spell, or commit time and resources to study and improvement in order to go completely against his training and cast a Necromancer spell – a slippery slope to corruption for our Thaumaturge.
Of course, 'school' is a very loose term – and a game term at that – so it can be interpreted in story terms however you like. For example, a Summoner doesn't necessarily summon a demon (although 'demon' is the default game term for any extra-planar being) – he could work with the spirits of dead heroes, entities of pure emotion, genies, elemental avatars etc., depending on the backstory you give him.
Hmm... a Summoner with a strong Elementalist leaning (or vice-versa)... that could be really cool...

Ok, I've given in and gone for the lvl 3 pledge.

Gone in at level 3 after much discussion ! :)

Anyone knows the manufacturer of this skeleton warrior?
-
I think it's a wargames factory plastic skeleton
-
Hard to judge from that angle, but could it be one of Wargames Factory's 'Greek' skeletons?
EDIT:
That little guy beat me to it, but seems to agree ;)
EDIT 2:
From the pics, they seem to have a set of legs with that stance:
http://www.wargamesfactory.com/webstore/myths-and-legends/wgf-ml002
-
Thanks. I like it because it remembers me the Harryhausen skeletons of Jason and the Argonauts.
-
definitely the wargames factory skeletons, i spent half of last year working with them, i see them when i close my eyes now... lol
(the new kit is actually pretty good, not as bad as they used to be, so if you need skeletons, they're pretty good)
-
Seperate feet.... Shudder
-
Yep, those are WF skellies. (note: some of these have some Mantic heads and bits)

Apologies for not having read through the entire thread before asking this: Are the schools of magic "colour-coded" at all? I ask because I have a few wizard figures from other manufacturers in just the right Frostgrave-y visual style, and might add them to my painting queue. I don't have a good overview of all the schools of magic yet, but I was hoping I could just paint them up with little forethought and decide which types of wizard they'll be later, if I do get into this game. For now I'm just inspired by this thread to paint a wizard or two :)
-
The skeleton is Wargames Factory. Kev built some up especially for the photo shoot. I kind of wish we hadn't bothered now because we're not stocking them any more, whereas we are still working with Mantic and I wish we'd put their Skeletons in. We did use Mantic Ghouls in the photo shoots.
That said, I took delivery today of some Frostgrave Undead I think you'll love.
Kev has been playing with the test frame of plastic figures we got last week, and has built two figures up. They are in my Facebook gallery:

It took about 24hrs to get mine - but I ordered on a Sunday when there was a show on.

I ordered my Level 5 pack Monday, got the link Tuesday - loads of goodies on there! :D :-*

Don't treat us like mushrooms, spill the beans, I really need to see what you'll have to offer on that front!!! ;)
I shall have to expand my undead collection, as I am running dry on old classic Warhammer plastic skellies for my GoB army!!
One question, pardon me for not paying proper attention - is the 'early bird' all up to June 15th, or has it passed?

Is there any way other then paying by credit card? :?

I am realy looking forward to be positively surprised.
Hope the story from Matt Ward will not be about Mage-Knight in shining armor hurled to Abyss by chaotic spell where he meets grim reaper, demigod of the past and where he carved mages name Draghal Kharo to demigods skin...
Well... stop on the prejudice...Mrs Austen is right.
I am realy realy looking forward to get my hands on it!

Does anyone know, if it is possible to make an undead Wizards with his men as player?

Is the lich available to but or is it exclusive to level 5? It's one of the better lich figures out there and would be my first choice of extra purchases.

the rules are pretty simple, so yes- sort of. There are no rules for race or living status. But if you feel your wizard is already death you can play it that way
-

If you mean 'can I use undead models for my warband?', then... sure - go for it. I'd use the Necromancer school, and work from there. This goes for dwarves, elves, orcs, fishmen, anthropomorphic mice, and anything else you can imagine - the stats will be the same for a zombie Thug as for a human Thug (or a dwarf/elf/orc/fishman/anthropomorphic mouse Thug), and the choice of models is all down to your warband's back-story. Provided your opponents can identify what each model represents, it shouldn't be a problem at all.
If you mean 'are there specific rules for playing an all-undead warband?', then... no - not in the core rulebook, but keep your eyes peeled for the Thaw of the Lich Lord supplement in November...
-

Mostly true (at present) for players' warbands, but there are undead and monsters that roam the city as neutral threats (i.e. they'll attack everyone!).
Being undead is important where certain spells are concerned (so I wouldn't recommend giving the 'Undead' trait to a model in an undead-themed warband!) and if one of the optional rules is used. Same thing goes for some of the other traits ('Animal', 'Demon', 'Construct' etc.).
- Warband Theme/Flavour/Back-story - anything goes!
- Warband Rules - nothing specific (yet) for undeath, or races.
EDIT because I completely forgot!
Some Wizards will have spells that can bring a limited number of monsters into their warband (e.g. the Necromancer can raise a zombie; the Enchanter can build a construct), or take control of random monsters during a game (e.g. the Summoner can bind a demon). So you do get to control weird creatures to a degree!
-

...
But the question was about wizard ;-)
I have another simple question: will there be any point-builder (like for example for Ronin) to build your own monsters henchmens, wizards??
-

I think of the Dark Fable-Miniatures Undead Egyptians. They look nice. Or the Khemri. I have some old heads, etc. in plastic...

Any update on what the next stretch goals levels are?
-
I'm going to go ahead and assume none of the magic-user types is particularly associated or disassociated with any specific colour, so prospective explorers to the frozen city can paint their wizards any way they like.
Another question: What, more precisely, is the nature of the city's ruination? Was it simply abandoned and left to crumble over the ages, or was there some cataclysmic event as with Mordheim? Were there devastating fires? Magic storms? Raiders or iconoclasts wreaking deliberate havoc? Have the folk living nearby (if there are any) been robbing the ruins of stones for their own construction projects? I'm asking because it might affect my terrain-making decisions if I do get into this game.
-
... prospective explorers to the frozen city can paint their wizards any way they like.
Absolutely!
What, more precisely, is the nature of the city's ruination?
The exact nature of its destruction has faded from memory, but the most common legend is of a great blizzard that ravaged and finally buried the city. What caused it is unknown, but a thousand years later, the snows have receded, and the city has been rediscovered.
So, some building may have been buried intact and preserved beneath the snow, others may be nothing more than ruins. Some outlying buildings may have been uncovered sooner, and looted by nearby inhabitants. Others may have been gutted by fires during the blizzard, as magical spells went awry or chemical formulae were spilled. The blizzard may have lasted a single night, or been preceded by weeks of prophecies and signs. The blizzard may have been orchestrated by fanatics who rampaged through the streets as the snows fell, or it could have been so sudden that no-one saw it coming.
Pretty much anything goes where magic is concerned, so go for terrain that you like!
-
I like this answer :)
A bit of every sort of damage, then. Maybe some fire damage here, some iconoclasty there, a strangely intact building over that-a-way, and so on. A fun-loving approach to trashing a city ;)
-
I asked about the same question a couple of pages ago (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77432.msg966305#msg966305).
Somebody mentioned that the wizards have lairs and that others live near the place, so more recent buildings may appear as well.
Perhaps a simple tavern where explorers meet?
-
I asked about the same question a couple of pages ago (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77432.msg966305#msg966305).
I can't be seen to make common cause with a Gothenburger. Heavens, what will people think of me? :P
Perhaps a simple tavern where explorers meet?
Good idea. Perhaps a few shanties of wattle-and-daub, woven reeds or scavenged timbers next to it? Some ruined buildings could have been turned into makeshift dwellings, or windshelters for campfires at least. A gypsy-style caravan or three would be awesome.
-

Oh, a caravan camp - awesome idea.
Wonder what sorts of bases wizards can have. I understand different bases have different effects. A caravan would be cool.

They might think you are cool and relaxed despite being from [other, not as cool or relaxed, place]. 8)

For those who might be interested, I got one of the test sprues of the plastic figures and assembled this size-comparison line-up. From left to right: Perry's Sudanese, Gripping Beast Dark Age Warrior, Frostgrave Soldier, GW Lord of the Rings, Frostgrave Soldier, Fireforge plastic, Frostgrave metal thief.
The shot can be expanded on my blog: http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/frostgrave-soldiers-size-comparison-shot.html
I'm loving all of the talk about different looks to the city and different base possibilities. I must admit, I never thought of a caravan, and there are no rules for such a base. That said, there is no reason not to say a Caravan counts as...
I want Frostgrave to be a fantasy world where people aren't afraid to make up there own stories and visions.
-
Useful, thanks :)
-
Thanks for the size comparison.confirms their potential for some interesting kit bashing.
Not even thought about a base camp for the wizard band but now that sounds like a fun terrain opportunity. I've thought about doing a terrain piece to represent a camp amongst ruins for my rangers of ithilien- a few small renedra tents, camp fires, spare weapons and equipment. I just might do it now to serve both the rangers and my wizard's band

I can honestly say that our planned family camping trip to Italy is more likely to break my wallet than this purchase. I'm just getting lvl 3 + one extra wizard pack for my regular gaming pal.
-
I did some comparisons with the plastics myself and that picture reminded me of something I noticed. The Fireforge figure looks taller than the others, he's not. The Fireforge plastics have surprisingly thick tabs under their feet, if you were to shave it to match then he'd be in the same line as all the other figures.

I`m also in. Lvl 3 ... :-*

I'm struggling hard to not jump in... the minis are wonderful, the rules look great (and I'll pick them up for certain) but I have so many wizards already. I pulled out all my Metal Magic magic users the other day and managed to get wizard/apprentice pairs for each school in Frostgrave. Granted, none are as perfect matches as the official minis but it'll be a nice meta-collection and I think some of the pairs turned out pretty good.

I absolutely adore the Metal Magic stuff (I am trying to collect 'on of each', slowly, along with my Fantasy Warriors collection). Great matching! Hope you share some pictures of them painted :)

Yeah, if anything would have made me more attracted to Frostgrave, it would have been for Josef Ochmann to have joined this project's (already impressive) sculptor line-up.
(This is assuming Ochmann is still sculpting. The last figures I'm aware he did were the Black Hat Samurai, which are certainly much newer than the Metal Magic stuff but still 8 years old by now.)
-
I would think most people would qualify pikes as 'a two-handed weapon', but as long as your opponent knows what they are, I don't see any major issue.

Which just shows how much personal preference affects everything, personally I don't like the Black Hat samurai at all.
-
Duly noted.
Anyway, I just brought up Ochmann as a throwaway comment and didn't mean to make a thing of it. I'm aware of course that North Star has its own clique of sculptors - and I don't mean "clique" in any negative sense at all, especially when it has the likes of Mark Copplestone and Mike Owen in it.

I thought I'd read on Facebook (or somewhere) that the Flesh Golem was going to be a freebie for level 3, 4 and 5 Wizards? Was I dreaming?
No, still cached on Google:
"I couldn't imagine a Necromancer with a Construct spell would want to mess about with hammer and nails, and bits of sacking, like the Enchanters would. So we've made the nastier Wizards a flesh Golem for their Construct spell. He'll come free to every Level three and above Wizard if we hit the next Spend Goal."
[Edited for typo]
-
Seems there's a new spend goal!
I've asked about the Flesh Construct situation - will update as soon as possible!

Can the game support three players?
-
I would suppose that most miniature games can be bent to accommodate more than 2 players, but it would be interesting to know if the author has already included suggestions in the rulebook.
-
The game can handle three players, the only real difference is changing the amount of treasure on the board. The treasure grab nature of the game means it works better with three players than straight up fight games, but it does still have the potential situation where two warbands take each other out leaving the guy who didn't get involved as the defacto winner.

That's a pretty common problem with any 3 player game ;)
Might as well just have 4 players then. lol
-
What are the constructs?
Specific materials or just specific sizes (or both)? So a medium stone construct and a large stone construct are different but a medium stone construct and a medium wood construct are the same (or are they?).

Yep, they are the same, size is what matters ;)
-
With the exception of magic and spells Frost-grave really goes the diversity through generalization way.
-
Yeah, if anything would have made me more attracted to Frostgrave, it would have been for Josef Ochmann to have joined this project's (already impressive) sculptor line-up.
(This is assuming Ochmann is still sculpting. The last figures I'm aware he did were the Black Hat Samurai, which are certainly much newer than the Metal Magic stuff but still 8 years old by now.)
That'd certainly explain why I've found those minis pulling me. I haven't bought them yet, but might just have to now (As if I didn't have enough to paint lol )
-
All looking very promising.
-
The Nickstarter is just a pre-order program. All the figures will be available to buy after the 20th of July, both from our mail order and retail stores. The Nickstarter allows you to get in early, save a bit of money and get some freebies.
So, exactly how early are the Nickstarter orders expected to ship?
I won't be home until about July 15th, and if a parcel is not picked up from the local post office within a fourtnight, it will be returned to sender.
-

Says on Nick's confirmation of pre-order email that delivery is intended for wc 6th July.
-
Hi Arognor
We haven't got a fixed delivery date as it is dependant on a lot of different factors. But I'm planning for early July. Have you got an alternative delivery address? If not we can hold onto the order for you.
Please email or PM me.
Nick
-
Sorry if this has been discussed before ;D
From the different blogs, info releases etc that I have read, there will be Undead in Frostgrave in the form of Skeletons and Ghouls, correct? Will there also be Zombies and Vampires?
Cheers
Gary
-
Yup, all of those undead are in there.

Thank you! Now I can put the Undead warband I had planned for Mordheim/Coreheim to better use in Frostgrave!

OK, hadn't seen that.

OK, thanks, I shall - I have already answered the confirmation mail, as I had missed the bit about writing which wizard pack I wanted as well, and I am going to order an additional pack for a friend, but I shall write a mail with all details.
-
I've bought into this game with 2 x Level 3 Wizard Packs as it looks like a super cool game. Thanks for designing and publishing it.
I've got my code that gives access to the extra shopping pages and there is a lot of stuff to buy on there that is obviously for the game, yet I have no idea what extra's I would like to buy because I don't know enough about the game to make an informed decision.
Would it be possible to get some info on these details?
A few examples just to give an idea of the type of info I am looking for;
Example 1 - Can we get a rough idea of what spells each of the Wizards specialise in? I may prefer some over others.
Example 2 - How many wild creatures (wolves, dogs, bears, giants, trolls, werewolves etc, etc) will I need and how often will they get used in the game. Are they brought on by a random event roll or a random roll on a spell effect table, meaning they will only see play time if a Wizard has that spell, successfully uses it, and rolls for "Wolves" on a table - this would mean that wolves would likely not see much table time. When they do appear, how many appear?
Example 3 - How often do I get to use Wizard companions...every game? Sometimes? Hardly at all? Only when I roll successfully on a table?
Example 4 - There's a lot of Undead Creatures on there for sale...how many of each will I likely need and how often?
Example 5 - What about the Demons and Constructs? How many of these will I need? Will I only need these for certain Wizards, or will they be needed for every, or most games?
I think some more information on this needs to be shared so that people can ascertain what extra's they would like to buy.
-
How are those of doing the Nickstarter through Brigade Games supposed to see the models that are being sold as extras? Will the photos all be made publicly available before the Nickstarter ends? Not willing to buy models without seeing what they look like, especially if everyone who ordered through Northstar gets to see them and I don't ;)
-
If you hover over the images of the wizard figures on the Nickstarter you'll get a little explanation about their specific types of powers. That said, wizards can dress however they want, so I'd just pick your favourite figs and not worry too much about what schools they represent. Also, wizards are not limited to spells from their own school, so there is a lot of crossover.
No creatures, of any type, are necessary to play Frostgrave. Most of the monsters/creatures in the game are optional encounters. You don't and won't need them to play the game, but if you have them and want to use them the rules are there. A few of the scenarios do require specific creatures, but you can pick those up when you want to play that scenario, or just use whatever you already have.
There are some types of creatures that can be summoned by wizard. However, again, these are optional, especially at the beginning. Wizard get to pick their spells, so if you want to summon demons, you can pick that spell. If you don't have any demon models, don't take that spell. Dogs are essentially warband members, you could have a full warband of dogs if you wanted...I doubt you'd win many games, but its an option. Worth picking one up if you like the idea of a four legged soldier in your warband, but they aren't necessary. If your wizard casts animal companion, he may choose from Bear, Wolf, Snow Leopard, or Ice Toad to join his warband. In theory you could have two of these in a warband (both the wizard and the apprentice could attempt the spell).
I would suggest having a few zombies and skeletons. These are great base creatures to serve as minor threats. And the wizards can potentially get a couple of zombies in their warbands.
If you want to play wizards who can summon demons or animate constructs, get a couple of each, especially small ones.
Mainly, I would just say, buy the figures you want, or the ones you think would be cool to include in games. There will be rules for them, but don't feel compelled to buy any of them because you think they are 'necessary' to play the game.
-
Thanks joe5mc for the info, much appreciated mate. That gives me something to work with :)
-

The extras are simply other useful pieces from North Star's lines - nothing exclusive! A couple are Copplestone minis, supplied by North Star. This is based on searching for the product codes, so there may well be some variation from these images (e.g. you won't get the hero and druid along with the banshee). I know that people ordering through North Star are emailed a link and password to access the extras section. I don't know how Brigade is handling it - may be worth asking them directly?
There are also some Mantic zombies and skeletons available as extras, but as these don't appear on the Brigade selection, I've omitted them.

Wizards get to pick their spells, so if you want to summon demons, you can pick that spell. If you don't have any demon models, don't take that spell buy some.
lol
-
With regards to the early bird shipping for RoW orders, will we have to pay more shipping if we add in lots of extras, or does that flat rate apply to the entire frostgrave order?
-

There's a glimpse of an encounter table of some sort in this review (http://thegaragegamers.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/frostgrave-fantasy-wargames-in-frozen_25.html).
There it seems to be just one or two monsters at a time, but that might be misleading.
-
There it seems to be just one or two monsters at a time, but that might be misleading.
Depends how many times you roll on the table... ;)
As Joe said - you don't NEED monsters... Or you can have as many as you want.
I'm working on some ideas for spirits that attack by attempting to possess mortals... That's just with the rulebook - there's plenty in it, but the potential for creating new stuff if you want to is great. This is especially true of monsters - they're a threat to all players, so are easily balanced by all players agreeing to face them - and in what numbers. My possession spirits are 1 for a fun scenario quirk (perhaps one more treasure token than usual, but which turns out to be a trapped spirit), 3 for a scenario complication, and 6 for something truly chaotic! Or 3, but increase the chance of possession... Or 1, but allow it a chance to jump from host to host... Hmmm...
-
Caved in on this recently. Looks superb so went all in at ultimate wizard level :D that'll be another peak to add to the lead mountain.
Now, where did I put that snow effect flock?

It's a pretty good deal... I'm still resisting, but it's getting harder with every day. Especially as I received my tax returns yesterday AND landed a new client assignment, starting Monday.
With the early bird postage cost, it's £120 shipped for the ultimate wizard. In it, you get 30 metal models. That's £4 each and not too shabby all in itself. Now, on top of that you get treasure tokens, ultimate treasure tokens (also metal models), a box of 20 very nice plastic models, a nice hard-back rule book, a paperback book with short stories and a few digital products. It's a crazy-good deal!
Ugh. How will I be able to resist?!

Don't mention it, your making it harder for me as well...
-
The Early Bird post offer ends Monday, it is a great offer if you want to get into Frostgrave. The Early Bird post offer is right across the range of Frostgrave products and extras, plus, if you order a Wizard Level before the 15th, anything you add after that date will be post free UK/ subsidised post overseas.
Example. You are in the UK. You buy a Level 1 Wizard deal now (Frostgrave rulebook + 6 FREE Treasure Tokens) for £15. Post free. If after the 15th of June you want to add a box of Frostgrave Soldiers for £20, there will be no post added. The Early Bird offer ends on the 29th of June when the Nickstarter ends.

Joe, could you kindly give us a run down on how Cover and Line of Sight works please?
So arrows and crossbow bolts (are there thrown weapons - spears, javelins, daggers, hand axes etc) are at a negative modifier to hit targets in cover? or do targets gets cover saves? or a bit of both? Cover from spells as well?
How does area type terrain work, do models within a copse of trees get some form of cover?
-
Line of sight is just true line of sight. If one figure could see another, he/she can shoot at it. There are modifiers if the target is behind cover, and for any intervening terrain between the firer and target. These modifiers are expressed as bonuses to the targets roll to avoid getting hit.
The basic games only has bows, crossbows, and spells for missile weapons. A few thrown weapons are coming though. Some spells generate shooting attacks, in which case all shooting modifiers apply.
-
So, I caved in, my soft spot for skirmish games and having some of my favourite sculptors on the project led to a lvl 5 sale :)
-

Excellent stuff, thanks for the info.
I don't have any snow covered trees and am thinking about buying some when it occurred to me that I didn't know whether or not a stand of trees would have any impact in the game in terms of cover.

I've asked about the Flesh Construct situation - will update as soon as possible!
Do we have anything more about this (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77432.msg970806#msg970806)?
I guess it's off. And I as I want both I'd just get a double anyhow.
Smith? Nick?
By the way, does it matter when I start adding stuff to my order? I'm sort of waiting to see all I can add to do it all at once.
But perhaps it looks better on the nickstarter if I start adding stuff.
-

Haha, sounds like you've already talked yourself into it Phreedh! I'm not in a position to get involved (at the moment, at least), but I do very much like the concept, particularly the small amount of miniatures needed to run games.
-

I've just added bits and pieces as they've become available, that way it helps push the total up to unlock other stuff that I will add at a later date.
Nick keeps a running total of what you order. :D
-
Hi Henrix
You've already ordered a Wizard Level haven't you? If not, and to anyone else reading, buy into a Wizard Level before tomorrow night because from Monday the subsidised postage (Early Bird offer) ends. As long as you have a Wizard Level, you can add extras to your order and they fall in the subsidised postage offer.
In all honesty, there's unlikely to be more stuff added now, even if we get over £40K. Reason being, Frostgrave has gone a lot better than I imagined, and really the focus now is making sure everything gets to us in time so we can deliver your orders complete as early in July as possible, rather than piling new product on to tempt more money from people.
You can see from the silhouette pictures on the Nickstarter page, not everything is quite ready yet, but it is all in hand.
Nick
PS That doesn't mean no new product for Frostgrave of course. After the release on the 20th of July, there will be more figure releases, including in November the second plastic box set!
-
You've already ordered a Wizard Level haven't you?
Oh, yes ;)
(And I'll probably add another, for a friend. As well as more stuff.)
You could have stretch goals teasing about future stuff. I guess the more the starter draws the more likely you are to make more further on.
I'm curious about the campaigns. What are they? Themed scenarios, monsters and such, or something else?
Wait... second plastic box?! I like the sound if that.
-
in November the second plastic box set!
*Perks ears*
...Yes? Don't leave us hanging! :)
-
including in November the second plastic box set!
Very cool :)
What will it contain? More Frostgrave Soldiers?
-
Got my order in on Friday. At the time I'm writing we're just short of the 30k level for spend goal 7 but I believe we'll see that go with the weekend's orders.
I'm interested in this second set of plastics too.
-
Second box set ! What could they be ???
-
Second box set was hinted at with a small pic of a hooded figure's head. Reading the Garage Gamers review of the main rulebook, towards the end there's a preview for the Lich Lord coming in November:
http://thegaragegamers.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/frostgrave-fantasy-wargames-in-frozen_25.html?m=1
The entire left page is a illustration of three hooded cultist looking guys. So, Lich Lord expansion in November, new plastic box set in November. Then the hooded head hint and the rulebook Lich Lord preview.
My money is on plastic cultists.
(Edited for typos)
-
My money is on plastic cultists.
Sounds well-researched and sensible. Thanks!
I could use plastic cultists. If they'll look like the people in the illustration they could also work (at least in a non-Frostgrave context) as masked resistance fighters, bandits/assassins/thieves or ensorcelled thralls (voodoo zombies, vampires' slaves, that sort of thing).
-
Since I'm tempted to get the Mantic 'Undead Encounters' set offered to Wizards, I would love to know that the second plastic box isn't going to be Frostgrave's own undead set. The sculpting so far on the Frostgrave figures is sumptuous. Is there any chance that this, at least, can be ascertained?
-
That question doesn't have a straight forward answer...
-
Thank you kindly, joe5mc. :-)
-
Sorry Al, actually now that I think about it, I'm less sure of the answer. Sorry for being cryptic, I'm just not sure how much I'm allowed to say.
-
Ah well, if you have to be cryptic, at least it's about the undead....
-
Hmmmm... I think I need to dig out my Disciples of the Red Redemption....
Had that big plastic clamshell for ages... ::)
-
Plastic hooded cultists... if they're as generic as the henchmen are be prepared to sell tons of them.
-
Joe, as most people here no doubt, I've seen the pics of some of the rulebook pages in a review done on the game/rulebook.
On page 23 we see a list of Soldiers from which players make their Warband selections.
The far right hand column lists the weapons/armour/equipment etc that a Soldier has. Are these items locked in concrete, or is there another section of the rulebook that provides points costs for weapons/armour/equipment so that certain Soldiers can be re-equipped (or additionally equipped). For example, the Barbarian has a Two Handed Weapon...is it possible for me to give him a Hand Weapon and Shield instead (or even in addition to the Two Handed Weapon)? Or could I perhaps give the Barbarian a Bow to carry as well as his Two Handed Sword so that if late in the game I find him too far away from an enemy to engage in melee, I could perhaps instead let fly with an arrow or two?
In one of the battle reports, one player (I think it might have been you) rolled up a Magic Dagger as a Treasure, this was given to the Thief in the Warband from memory. Presumably because it is a weapon that is listed in the far right column for that Soldier type. Could the Magic Dagger have been given to a Soldier who does not have Dagger listed in this column, say the Apothecary or Tracker for instance?
-
I'd buy the Undead Encounters freely now. There will be some Undead (not sure what yet) for the Lich Lord supplement, but that's not till November. The Mantic figures in the Undead Encounters will work perfectly till then, and maybe after if we don't make Frostgrave Zombies etc.
This fellow (https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/11251046_1066440140051554_2238596961530910535_n.jpg?oh=fd53ccfcbf0a1dca8f8cb81bcce93424&oe=56337017)
is coming free with Level 5 Wizards and will be on sale in November.
-
Soldiers have fixed weapons. However, you shouldn't get too caught up on the names of the soldiers. These are just labels used to define them. If you want a barbarian equipped with a bow, just buy a ranger, but use a more barbarian looking figure. If you want sword and shield, just go with an infantryman. If you want your barbarian wearing chainmail, just get the Templar.
All soldiers can carry one piece of magical equipment. In the case of weapons or armour, it must be the same type as one they already carried or wore.
-

That's an excellent mini, and I'll definitely be picking one of those up! Thanks for sharing the pic mate :)

Thanks for the info there Joe, much appreciated mate. I guess it would start to get a bit hard to balance the cost of Soldiers if you started to introduce too many variables, like the addition of weapon changes etc. A little coolness is lost, I guess, but it's no biggy. It certainly means I won't feel like I have to assmble and paint several of the same type of mini (Barbarian with THW, Barbarian with THW and Bow, Barbarian with THW, Bow and Dagger, Barbarian with Bow, Hand Weapon and Shield, etc, etc, etc)
-
Hi there! As many, I'm in for level 5, and it is the review in GarageGamers what convinced me.
I noted that many soldiers are very similar, despite their weapons and armor. Are some different skills or powers to each of them? I mean, what is the advantage of a templar against a knight, apart from the two handed sword? Why using a thief, if it is weaker than a thug? Or a tracker against a ranger, apart of the +1 in Will? Maybe is only my D&D education, but the logical move for me is to choose specialists not only for their fight/shoot skills, but also for their special abilities: a tracker could ignore difficult terrain, a thief could give you an opportunity to stole an item from your adversary, a barbarian could be resilient against magic and so on...
-
Not my preference for D20 systems (prefer 2D6) but willing to give this a try IF you can have dwarves... so can someone please confirm that dwarves are a henchman option? :).
-
As mentioned previously, there are no specific rules for dwarves, elves, goblins etc. but that doesn't mean you can't use the models you want and give them profiles from the henchmen already available.
Dwarf berserker with big axe? Use the barbarian stats. Easy.
-
Glad to know the lich will be available sometime. it's great.
-
I'd buy the Undead Encounters freely now...
Many thanks Nick, now I just need to factor in the other wizards I'd like -- and that War Hound. Can't do without the War Hound!
-

No specific skills or abilities for the henchmen - these are minions, after all! To use a D&Dism, your Wizard and Apprentice are the PCs - they have the spells and the options to play with. Henchmen are there to protect the PCs and to grab loot - true of a Thug as of a Templar (not that I'd delegate the task of looting to a Templar!).
Why a Thief rather than a Thug? Or a Templar instead of a Knight? For me, there are four main arguments:
1. "Because I like this model/concept".
2. Play style. A Thief is a bit faster than most henchmen, and not as susceptible to magic, making him a good bet to run around and grab treasure - if that's my game-plan, he's more use than a Thug at the same price.
3. Risk/Reward. Why a Templar over a Knight? Perhaps because I'm willing to trade off reduced armour for the damage bonus from using a two-handed weapon (comes in VERY handy against some of the tougher creatures you might encounter).
4. Opportunity. Maybe I found a powerful magic greatsword in the loot from last game, and it's a shame to not use it just because I don't have a two-handed weapon user in my gang!
As always, your mileage may vary - I admit I lean far more towards telling a story than I do trying to maximise my gang.
...barbarian could be resilient against magic and so on...
He is! +3 Willpower should give him a good chance of shrugging off magical attacks. He's also tough in melee (+4), and has good health (14). No ranged capability, mind you, and his armour is low (10).
-
Haha, sounds like you've already talked yourself into it Phreedh!
You know me all too well, Gaz! :D Easily taken with anything shiny you know... :)
What keeps me from taking the plunge is simply a tiny, thin voice of reason in the back of my head. "You have maybe 50 unpainted wizard models already - you don't need 20 more!" - and it's really hard to argue against that. :D

Am I going to need Ghouls, please? I like Ghouls (as a concept - no, I do NOT have a fetisch for putrid skin and eating human flesh >:D ).
-
Just thinking out loud. ;)
One for Joe/Nick/Smith; elementalists? Elementals? If so, just one type or small/medium /large like the constructs and demons?

I thought the constructs were the elementals, hence the need for the flesh golem. :?

Am I going to need Ghouls, please?
Need? No. Be able to use? Yes. Really useful come November? Oh, my, yes.
One for Joe/Nick/Smith; elementalists? Elementals? If so, just one type or small/medium /large like the constructs and demons?
The Elementalist is aligned with both the Summoner and the Enchanter, making either Demons or Constructs a very viable option. In-game, 'demons' are not just pointy-tailed, goat-legged monsters. It's a catch-all term for anything summoned from another plane, as opposed to built (as per a construct) - perfect for the classic elemental.
I would say that an Elementalist-built construct would be a good approach for a stone golem or similar - something animated by the Wizard's own power. A true elemental, even a small one, would be better-represented as a 'demon' - something summoned and bound to the Wizard's service.
-
Oh my yes.... Sweet sexy plastic.

Thanks Phil. That's great. So just substitute elemental for demon. Makes perfect sense. :D

Just thinking out loud here, but I've got a strong desire to have at least one up-gradable non-wizardly character in my Warband...so I've been tossing around the idea in my head to have a Warband Sergeant. Although the Wizard (and his Apprentice) retain full command of the Warband, I figure they'd probably need someone to keep the other Soldiers in the Warband in line and to provide some kind of a non-wizardly leadership role for them.
The Warband Sergeant would gain experience and be able to use any weapon, armour or equipment. So maybe you start out with a Soldier, give him a name and delegate him as your Warband Sergeant. From then on for each game he participates in and survives, he receives a single experience point to be spent on increasing his skill OR adding to his usable weapon, armour, equipment list. The ability stat line would be capped so he wouldn't get out of control and even though he could potentially use any of the weapons, armour and equipment in the game, he can only utilise one set of each within a game. Maybe he could also make two melee attacks if he had a melee weapon in each hand, with the second attack receiving no bonuses, or perhaps even a -5 to hit or something like that.
Anyway, just thinking out loud...
-
Need? No. Be able to use? Yes. Really useful come November? Oh, my, yes.
Allrighty, then... Maybe it's time for building a unit of actual ghouls for my GoB army, instead of the zombies I use atm.
Too many projects, too little time... o_o
-
Well, £30k has been passed, which means Joe is going to produce a free mini-campaign for the game, and the second construct pack is unlocked!
Also, the Nickstarter page has been updated with this bad boy:
A Major Demon (and he definitely lives up to his name – he stands twice the height of a man!), he'd also make a great minotaur if that's more your thing.

nic-e those plastics look great

I think i should point out that sadly, despite my fondest wishes, these are not mine, I merely took the picture from the north star facebook page.

For those in the know, in regards to basing, are arcs or facing used in the game? Does it matter if you use square or round basing?
-
For those in the know, in regards to basing, are arcs or facing used in the game? Does it matter if you use square or round basing?
From what i can gather based on earlier comments, there is no strict basing rule, but round is going to be easier for resolving things given that units aren't in rank.
As for arcs and facing? No idea, but if you think it might be an issue i suppose there's nothing stopping you marking it off either way.
(also, as a side note, i've realized that the lord of the rings plastic troop boxes come with 12 figures, two of which you could convert to be your wizards and the rest use as a variety of troop types, converting and subbing figures as and when needed. The frostgrave figs are awesome, and i will be getting some, but i'm tempted to bash out 2 or 3 full themed warbands this way.)

Nope! And nope!
Basing is up to you. I use 25mm rounds, while Joe uses GW-style slottabases.

Next question for those in the know: the random encounter table shows a bunch of animals which presumably have sharp pointy teeth or claws or other natural defenses. But the table also has things like skeletons, armored skeletons, ghouls, snow trolls, frost giants, vampires and zombies - all of whom have hands. Do they carry weapons? Is a weapon already factored into their profiles? I'm putting some skeletons together for encounters...how should I model them weapon-wise. Does it even matter?
I'm guessing some of this will change come November as far as fielding some of these undead guys as soldiers and how they'll be equipped. But for now, are encountered beasties armed?
-
For creatures, such as skeletons, ghouls, and trolls, it makes no difference what weapon the miniature is carrying. Or even if it is carrying a weapon. Any weapons are factored into their profiles already.
-
For me, there are four main arguments:
Thanks for the clarifications. It seems more tactical than I imagine previously, with slight differences between henchmen and specialists, giving the mages the use of special rules.
I m curious about the monster encounter table. Would it be possible to create new profiles for creatures we have in our collections? It is easy to imagine magical monsters, like basilisks or chimeras, captured in private magical zoos and, after the fall of the city, being free and rampant.
-
Making up new creatures should be no problem at all - in fact, I encourage it! Frostgrave is a weird place and who knows was strange beast occasionally crawl out of the ancient breeding pits...
-
Would it be possible to create new profiles for creatures we have in our collections?
Absolutely!
As wandering monsters are a threat to everyone, they can be given almost any stats you want. I'd use an existing option as a baseline, then tweak them from there. Likewise, monsters follow a basic activation system, depending on surrounding threats/prey. If you want something that responds in a different way, simply change the triggers. An example I posted a few pages back was for possession spirits whose 'attack' was a casting of the 'Mind Control' spell.
As always, agree any new creations with your opponent.
There are a few potential monkey-wrenches - an Enchanter, or someone with Enchanter spells, will be more likely to deal with a rogue construct, making it more dangerous for his foes. Similarly, a Summoner might find a wandering demon more of a benefit than a threat. It's no guarantee, of course, but it's worth bearing in mind when bringing powerful new things to the table - last thing you want is to stat out a Demon Lord, only to have your opponent successfully cast 'Bind Demon' in the first turn!
-

Thanks Joe! I'm really looking forward to this game.

That would be hilarious.
-
Will there be the ability to have horses?
-
I think that Joe said there are no horses. Frostgrave is full of difficult terrain, snow and ice, a bad place for a horse...
-
A sleigh to cart more treasure in, on the other hand, would be awesome.
Huskies or reindeer, your choice.
-
Plastic hooded cultists... if they're as generic as the henchmen are be prepared to sell tons of them.
Yep that would be great.
Not in on the nickstarter but I watch with interest for these multipart plastics.
-
Huskies or reindeer, your choice.
Trust me, you do NOT want to meet the reindeer that live around Frostgrave...
-
Just added to my order. Got a bear, another magician set, some bases, and something else I think. Can't remember so that should be a nice surprise, lol.
-
Trust me, you do NOT want to meet the reindeer that live around Frostgrave...
"That red nose? It isn't cranberry juice."
-
Just ordered Level 1. Can't wait to get my hands on the rules!
-
Seconded! This seems to have jumped everything in my paint queue overnight, I can't wait to get my hands on these minis. I've been buying up the battlefront prepainted ruined city terrain as well as any appropriate aquarium decor I can find to outfit the table quickly. There's some really good stuff out there in the aquarium aisle that fits the Frostgrave bill nicely.
-
Seconded! This seems to have jumped everything in my paint queue overnight, I can't wait to get my hands on these minis.
Really? Even before you got them?? lol
I don't keep a queue at all, I try to finish wahtever I have on my pain(t)station, then decide what to do next.
But, oh my... I think I may have to assemble some of my Fireforge Templar Infantry to use for this... and C&C... and maybe God of Battles...
I already have half a ton of Skeletons and Zombies ready, and I just stumbled on two based and primed bears in a box full of old abandoned paused projects.
Good thing I hardly ever sell anything off (that GW Orc collection would have come in handy for GoB, but, well... ::) ) lol
-
"That red nose? It isn't cranberry juice."
Were reindeer lol

"Mark Copplestone has made a couple of Wizards for our own 'Fantasy Worlds' range, two young female fire elementalists."

And I was preparing my Copplestone/Trent Maid Marion to paint as the girl from Frozen!
-
Wudduyamean? Those are clearly FIRE-elementalists! ;D
I must check the rest of that range, and call on White Knight to see if he has gotten a particular mini from the caster, so I can finally get some minis that would go along with these nicely...
-

Oh yes, I have lists and spreadsheets. When I can't do hobby stuff, I plan hobby stuff. When stuff rises to the top of the list, I work it to completion and move on to the next. Some projects keep getting bumped and never get done. So it's really more like this game as a whole seems to be rising quickly to the top of my hobby priority list. Like many others I have bucket loads of skeletons, zombies, plus a few bones minis in the lead pile that'll work as various beasties for Frostgrave, So I can get my own project started before the game ships.
I see we hit 35k, come on 40!
-
The basic games only has bows, crossbows, and spells for missile weapons. A few thrown weapons are coming though.
Will these thrown weapons be included in one of the Campaign Books? Thaw of the Lich Lord or Hunt For The Golem? Or perhaps a planned expansion or advance rules supplement?
-

I used to do that, but ended up ditching it. The stuff never getting done piled up and became a disheartening factor. Nowadays I just chuck it in a box for storage, until a project comes along that requires unearthing it. Which happens more and more often after I started setting the goal that everything I do must have multi purposes/uses. :)
-

That's the plan. There isn't one in The Hunt for the Golem (well, there is technically one, but it's creature-only), but there's certainly a few scheduled for future books. First one is in Thaw of the Lich Lord.
-
My friend get a preview copy from Osprey - thanks Joseph and Osprey for it, so you can see his speedy review here: http://wargamingasp.blogspot.cz/2015/06/fast-and-furious-about-frostgrave.html (http://wargamingasp.blogspot.cz/2015/06/fast-and-furious-about-frostgrave.html). We are going for first tests on sunday, we will be back then.

Excellent!!! Thanks for the info mate :)
-
Any chance that a future supplement will introduce some advancement possibilities for henchmen?
I am thinking something along the lines used in Judge Dredd; survive a number of fights, become a character (or roll to become one), can now earn xp and use it to strengthen abilities (or get new 'skills').... Must of course be toned down compared to Wizards, as they should stay the focus of the warband.
-
Any chance that a future supplement will introduce some advancement possibilities for henchmen?
This would be cool!
-
We'll see.
-
We'll see.
That'd be super cool Joe, even if it was just something experimental that you uploaded to google docs or something similar.
Speaking for myself, I'd only wish for something fairly simple and straight forward...something that just allowed perhaps a single soldier leader to gain skills/attribute increases/use of different weapons as he gained experience and then perhaps a very minor increase for other soldiers...maybe a single stat bump after having survived several forays into the frozen city.
-
These two female magic users are very cool and I will add them to the order I am going to place for extra stuff once I get my head around the rules and work out how many of what type of miniature I will require.
I'd like to buy all the models I need now and add them to my 2 x Level 3 Wizard packs, however I'm just uncertain how many of what I will need. For instance, how many small constructs will I need - if I am playing a game where two Enchanters are battling among the cities ruins, and both have a spell to create small constructs, will it be likely that they both end up bringing to life a half dozen small constructs each?
-
If a wizard wants constructs in his warband, he has to try and create them before a game. In theory, both the wizard and apprentice could each create/animate one before the game. So, any starting warband can have, at maximum, two. Slowly an Enchanter could build up an all construct force, but it would take time and probably be a rather limited warband.
It is also possible to take control of constructs wandering the ruins, but this is dependent upon the players wanting to include them or playing a specific scenario.
It sounds like you've already come up with a system for a henchman gaining experience! I designed the game to have an amount of paperwork that I find fun and enjoyable. Some may find it too much, other's might want more. Feel free to modify the rules to suit your style!

Thanks for that info, Joe. The concept of being able to take control of a random wandering construct is so very cool...I love it :)
I guess I might throw in for 2 x packs of small/medium constructs and 2 x packs of Imp/minor demon and then a single pack of each of the larger guys. That should do me as a starting point.
That large construct looks awesome painted!!!
-
Well afterthoroughtfull reading of the rules, I have to say they are pretty awesome. We have some issues how multiple combat si written, and items/inventory is not entirely clear as well. But if you think about it and go to key mechanics and spirit of the rules you can understand it.
Anyway only con I see in it is about the camp which deserved much more attention, especially I am not sure if all wizards have same advantages in the camp. Hope there will be more options later on in addons.
I like that it´s wargaming where it does not matter if you win the session. Also the game doesnt say what is the end, speaking about level 40 wizards if I am right. But what are your options for purchase on high levels?
More about in my review after sunday tests. Cheers Dalcor/w.a.s.p. Club

the rules/war band building seem generic enough where you can get away with using just about any models to create your list. Sure there might not be "special rules" for certain races but if you have a band of dwarves that want to visit the city of Frostgrave nothing is really stopping you. I might even run some orcs with a shaman at the head to venture into frostgrave.
I cannot wait to get my hands on the models and rules, i went in on wizard level 3 along with some extras!

Great. So a separate purchase from my level five Frostgrave preorder and separate shipping fees. And probably will never be carried by brigade games anyway, so a moot point. Wouldn't this have been a better stretch goal, or even add-ons, than the wallpapers?

Just in the same situation as you are, Sir. I was jumping in joy for having Elsa and....(Ahem), sorry, for having two new wizards my daughter could use in our games, but being outside the preorder is a bitter surprise for those who are outside the UK.
(Still, the two ladies are beautiful miniatures, and I´ll imagine I'll include them in a future order.)
-
Which one would that be?
The pumpkin man - waiting for him to be available, and then I'll need some Zeds and 'princesses'
I'm a zucker for Zeds, and my girls love the other stuff ;)
-
Have been trying to contact Nick about upping my 'pledge', btw, but no answer so far. Guess he's busy?
-
All I did was buy more stuff from the store and I got a message saying it was added.
-
All I did was buy more stuff from the store and I got a message saying it was added.
Yeah, but I want to change my order to a lvl 5 + a lvl 1, not just add to lvl 3.
-
Just added the small, medium and large constructs to my pledge. Loving the look of these. Also a Frost Giant as I can use for OGAM as well :)
Really glad to see how the funding has done with this, has shown there is lots of interest with the game!
-
Can someone do another battle report and post it online so I can have something more to read, thanks :)

Seconded. Goes to show that pre-orders still work without all that Kickstarter nonsense. ;)
Just seen the weapons rack freebie on the Nickstarter page and the weapon in the middle at the bottom has made me want to start a warband based on Krull.
Again.... :D

Lol, I noticed that too, and the Klingon weapon on the right. I wonder what the left one is in refer nice to?
Also just added to my order.

Me too :) Seriously, we are tempted by the first reports and would like to see how it goes on!

I've scoured every bit of web content I can find on Frostgrave as I'm more than a little hyped.
Goblin wizard and apprentice found and ordered:
Mantic
(http://www.beastsofwar.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Goblin-Wizard-394x359.jpg)
Willy Miniatures
I can't find anything on weapons though. Does anybody know what marks the difference between knife/hand weapon/2-handed weapon and bow/crossbow?
Knowing what we do about the combat system and how it includes damage in the to-hit roll, I'm finding it hard to think where they would fit in.
-
I think certain henchmen have access to certain weapon options, that's how they are separated. I believe like the difference between a templar and knight was one had a shield and sword another had a double handed weapon. So some of things are just very minor changes or a +1 to a certain stat.
-
Archer and Crossbowman have identical stats so there must be something extra to warrant two listings!
-
Getting rather excited about this now.
Think I managed to blag a couple of Battlefield in a Box Gothic Ruins at a good price, which will go on the table with Pegasus ruins and a Ruins of Osgiliath (which has been in the wargaming pile for ages). If it needs more there is a Garden of Morr on the pile too.
And whilst I love the look of the Frostgrave Major Demon, I'm thinking of Black Tree's Azal the Daemon (3rd Dr Who) as it looks closer to the Imp and Minor Demon in design...
-
You know, i once had an idea for a tabletop skirmish campaign set in the world of runescape, using the quests from the game as the basis for the campaign story.
The problem?
I didn't have a rule set that mixed skirmish and magic with good story telling.
I just remembered the idea and now i think i can make it happen!

There are not many quests I remember though, mostly the Romeo and Juliet one :D

I signed back in last summer ( i know, i didn't think runescape would keep all accounts open, but fair play to them they did!) and there are hundreds of new quests ,including a load of full campaign ones! but sadly ,romeo and Juliet is gone!
I think the demon slayer quest and the rune mysteries quests would be great.

Crossbows offer increased damage, but need an action to reload. Bows offer a little less punch, but are much faster.

Not a Frostgrave product (I would assume for the obvious reason), but someone on Facebook asked if they could be added to the Wizard orders and Nick said yes. First comment and replies:

Hello all. I became VERY inspired this week to start putting together some frozen ruined urban terrain for Frostgrave. The game looks like it will fill in my desire to have a Mordhiem type game.
My requirements for the terrain was three-fold: 1) it needed to be 'quick' to make, 2) affordable 3) easy to transport (light) I was able to get all three requirements fulfilled. I used foam core which was light and inexpensive, some pva glue, and some spray-paint- and Viola! Lots of terrain built over a 5 day span. Here are a couple of pics. Its my first time posting some pictures- so lets hope that they appear...
-
That's some fantastic looking terrain! Perfect for the Frozen City. It looks suitably cramped and maze like already.
-
Thanks, I appreciate the nice comment. Here is a picture of all the terrain I made on a white ground sheet. I should have enough terrain now to do a 3' x 3' board. I am a nutter I know. Now I just await the rules and miniatures.
-
That is impressive. :o
-
Kev Dallimore has been sticking the plastic soldiers together, have a look at the Facebook gallery

Looks like a german expressionist film from the 1930's!

We came so close to getting to the £40K spend goal. That would have released a free model of a new Templar. I've decided, because we got so close, I'm going to send a free Templar model to every Level 3+ Wizard after all! What we'll do is include a free Crusader Miniatures model of a Knight with a two handed weapon. The model Giorgio is making of the Templar for Frostgrave will be finished, and made available later on.

Your a legend Nick! Thank you very much, very generous of you.
-
Thanks Nick, a very generous undertaking and one that is greatly appreciated :)
-
This is, indeed, brilliant news. I must say that as my first NickStarter, this had been a very positive and enjoyable affair!
-
Nick, that is excellent service. Now looking forward to when it all ships next month.
-
Oooh thanks! Like those very much! :)
-
Frosty! :D
-
Good stuff. I wanted to check out those knights at some point anyways, so that suits me perfectly :D
It will even be great for my Saga/Rampant army I want to start working on. The henchmen will be great as Levy-type soldiers.
-
Just a heads up for those people looking for Frostgrave scenery.
Dark Sphere (London online/B&M wargames shop) is listing Battlefield in a Box BB526 - Crumbling Remnants (http://www.darksphere.co.uk/pgc.php?c=195) as 'in stock' at the moment. Last I looked there were 10 of them. (Was 11, I bought one!)

I'll probably use my Wall i originally built for my Westeros project for Fostgrave as well.

Thank you Nick for the extra mini, always welcome more for the mountain :)
Nice

Thank you very much Nick. Have enjoyed the nickstarter experience immensely.
Is there still time to add extra bits and pieces to my frostgrave order before the early Bird shipping deadline?
Just spotted the elementalists in your fantasy worlds range :-* :-* ;D :-*
-
Thank you!
Really looking forward to get all the fantastic miniatures. :)

Just spotted the elementalists in your fantasy worlds range :-* :-* ;D :-*
Well, everything under Frostgrave seems to be marked "out of stock" and their payment information states
they're not accepting Paypal (pretty sure they still accepted it a while back... ???), I'd suspect "no" to be the answer.
Shame too, I was hoping to add a few things to my order as well since I actually got some cash money... on the 30th. :?
-
Sorry guys, I've had to close the Frostgrave order book. We need to concentrate on getting everything already ordered out of the door now. There are in excess of 1000 individual packets to get out next week, plus we are trying to not let our normal trade get too neglected, AvP comes in Monday for example.
All the Frostgrave product will be available to buy around the 20th of July, so it's not too long a wait.
-
When does our nickstarter stuff actually get posted??
-
I believe 6th of July.
-
I'm not making any promises that we can't keep. A Frostgrave item won't be with us till the 7th, so we'll have to wait till then at the very least. We're packing now, getting ready for next week, I'll announce here and on Faceache when we're ready to go!
-
Sounds promising Nick. :D
-
Some interesting stuff out from 4Ground which maaaay or maaaay not be aimed at Frostgrave...go take a look.

Seems like a fast entry point and I'm sure they'll sell well.
Not to me though, lasercut just doesn't work for stone in my opinion, it just looks like a toy set.
-
I've started slapping snow onto the gothic battlefield in a box buildings in preparation for the launch of Frostgrave.
-
I wonder if we'll get a preview pic of the armor rack before the "nickstarter" orders ship? It's the only wizard level 3+ item that we haven't seen yet. I know that the Northstar folks are very busy. My hats off to them.

Are you sure? I've only seen the weapon's rack, not the armour rack. Do you have the link? I did a quick search and came up with nothing.

I was in the Nickstarter and I'm looking forward to playing this.
From the recent Gallery page there appear to be a number of interesting places, such as the silent tower, the library and the haunted houses.
Are there any specific requirements for building these so that scenarios for these specific locations will work?

Thanks guys! I wonder why they didn't put it up on the nickstarter page with the rest of the items?
-
Are these actual locations with some meaning in the game or just narrative backdrops for the photos?

-
They're just some of the locations featured in the scenarios.
As to whether they have specific building requirements, some have suggestions for specific set-ups, but all can be recreated with pretty much any terrain you have. Any special rules associated with a scenario location are entirely transferable to any scenario or terrain you like.
For example, one of the scenarios is called 'The Mausoleum', and calls for a central tomb, from which undead stride forth. It would, however, work just as well with any building (or ruin, or portal, or trapdoor) the important thing is that it's a central location, and that it spawns monsters (which could be zombies, ghouls, wolves, even trolls if you're up for a challenge!).

While everyone is eagerly awaiting their Nickstarters, it might be worth mentioning that you can now see all of the spells in the game and download the 'Wizard Sheet' on the Osprey Gaming Resources page!

Thanks for the heads up :)

Ooh, but those wizard cards are rather plain... :?
I'll have to see if I can whip up something more visually pleasing then... ;)

Hey, you stole my thoughts! :-[
-
Something about great minds, and all that? :D
I'm sure we won't be the only ones who'll be firing up the old Photoshop and Illustrator for this... ;)
-
Actually "cards" is a stretch. It's more like a table. Look forward to seeing what you cook up!

-
Oh, don't hold your breath just yet; I'm certainly looking forward to start on this, but that's a lot of work (although once the templates are done, it'd be pretty much a copy/paste production run) and I might well run out of steam before the end.
And also; I'll be needing my copy of the book first, so I can match the cards to the style of the book. Because I'm like that... ::)
But I'll post the results here for everyone to enjoy, obviously. :)
-
I think i'm going to print them out and attach them to old Magic cards so it has nifty art to go along with it.
-
So this idea of spell cards got my mind racing so I thought I would come up with a design. Not to steal Daeothar's thunder. If anyone is interested I could make a whole deck. Not sure if peeps would like the icons for wizard type.

Ooh I like the second one! :)
-
Ooh I like those. I prefer the one with the bit of colour added.
-
Nice work like both!
-
Very nice work! 8)
I also like the second one best; the monochrome solution works best with those icons, which are nifty. If you want colour, I'd suggest a very thin coloured line in the border, specific to each type of wizard instead of colouring the icons.
Not to steal Daeothar's thunder.
Hey, so far there hasn't even been lightning yet, so feel free... :D
-
I was just worrying about the text, planning on using a mail merge as I am good with them, but the logo on the back would be nice.
Avery printable business cards seem the best way to proceed, they are 85 × 54mm in size so can you get card sleeves to fit them? I know from bitter experience that card sleeves come in all sorts of different sizes - and Fantasy Flight have the sense to colour code theirs.
Looking at the Board Game Gurus website I see there are some that might do:
Fantasy Flight (green) 57mm x 89mm
Mayday 56mm x 87mm
It is almost a pity that I finish work on Friday before going on holiday as this is a job for the colour laser printers there.

You might want to leave the casting number blank. Wizards from different schools will have different casting values. Also, the value can change through a campaign if your wizard puts levels into improving their ability with a given spell.

Thanks for the tip. I have just been going by the spells pdf since I do not have the rulebook.

Yes please Audrey, and thank you for being so kind as to share your work with the community :)
They all look fantastic!!!
-
Great cards! The second is best.
I'd skip the black borders, though. (If not else because it saves ink.)
And a little more margin between the text and border makes it easier to read.
The school icon is great to have.
54x85mm is a good size - not quite standard CCG size, but still common.
Green FFG and Arcane Tinman size, as well as many others. (Not Ultra-Pro though, I think.)
I'd anyhow use collector pages with room for nine standard cards. My own spellbook containing whatever spells I have at the moment, sorted by the most commonly used spells first.
-
Wow. :o
Lovely take on those cards audrey. I'd love a set, and I agree, it is very generous of you to share your work. Thank you. :D

Pleased to report there weren't any other Frostgrave Nickstarter boxes lying about the place, they all went in the post already, so the rest of you should get them in the next day or two.
It all looks great and I'm very happy with it all, thanks Nick and the guys.
Looking forward to a proper unboxing later, but for now, back to work.

Oooh sweet! Can't wait to unbox mine! :) :)

I like having the base casting number on the cards. Then you can do quick mental math to adjust the number based on your caster's school or spell improvement. The way you've done it gives us a nice baseline to work from. But either way, good work!

The wait is over my nickstarter has arrived.metals and resins cleaned up and plastics removed from sprues and started to dry fit them together.rules flicked through briefly really happy customer

I am splitting off the Spell Card topic in order to keep things focused and not clutter up this thread with discussion of design and edits. Plus it will make it easier to track :D

Wow.people getting stuff already. Very quick preorder system.
-
I'll have to wait more than ten days to open the box because I'm going on holiday!
-
I am not sure when mine will arrive. Post to Northern Ireland is usually a bit slow but the 12th of July is coming up when the whole place shuts down for a bit. Bonfires, marching, fat balding men with really bad sunburn, protests about the marching and lots of overtime for the police. The upside is that I finished today so I have some time to get everything in order, even before the actual box arrives there are figures and terrain that will do nicely.
-
I hope you don't mind me posting this, it's a bit indulgent but sometimes thanks should be made:
Frostgrave is at last ready. The Books and figures are on their way to expectant customers all over the world. It's been a tremendous project, and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved, for their commitment to making this a great product.
The first person to thank is of course the author and Osprey Games man Joseph McCullough.
Then thanks to:
Making Frostgrave The Game:
Phil Smith, manager of Osprey Games and editor of Frostgrave.
Richard Sullivan, Osprey Supremo.
Stewart Larking for the rulebook design.
Chris Raine for producing the rulebook.
Steven Meyer-Rassow for the box design.
Zorana Rzanicanin for enthusiasm above and beyond the call of duty.
Martin Spear for getting Tales of the Frozen City sorted out.
Alice Milner for everything digital.
And, especially, Dmitry Burmak, for bringing it all to life.
Making Frostgrave the Miniatures:
There are a group of the miniature designers I work with, the best in their field, who I approached with Frostgrave last July. To my delight, every one of them said ‘yes’ immediately. This meant I had the wonderful problem of having to break up the range into ‘who wanted to do what, who was best at this figure, etc’. They are:
Mike Owen
Mark Sims
Mark Copplestone
Nick Collier
Giorgio Bassani
Richard Kemp
And Bob Naismith for the plastic Frostgrave Soldiers
Plastic Design and Production:
Terry and Joan Ardener, plus the whole Renedra Team.
North Star Military Figures Team:
The following not only put their full efforts into Frostgrave at work, they took it on the road to demo at various UK shows:
Dean Winson
Paul Anson
Karl Tebbutt
Christine King
The rest of the team:
Mark Wheatley
Phil Tonge
Tony Slocombe
Ros Rots
Ben Wheatley
Frances Eyre.
Special mention to Dave Woodward, he not only worked to get the orders out of the door, he also painting lots of the pre-release Frostgrave figures.
Dave King for running the demonstration games.
Kev Dallimore. Where can I start with Kev? He not only painted the majority of the promotional figures, but he prepared the scenes and took the photos for the rulebook, he designed and maintained the Nickstarter page and provided all the graphics you see for Frostgrave online and in the magazines.
Resin Production:
Darryl Ballam
N-FX
Skytrex.
Printing:
Print Revolution
Midland Regional Printers
If I’ve missed anyone out, it wasn’t deliberate, thank you as well!
Lastly I’ll not forget to mention myself, as I’ve managed the Frostgrave figure range from initial design concepts to putting the last figure in the last Nickstarter box.
I hope you’ll enjoy the miniatures and playing the game, this isn’t an end of course, Frostgrave is now a regular product line to order as normal, and we are already working on Frostgrave: The Thaw of the Lich Lord, due out in November.
-
I'll let you off this once. ;)
A great project, can't wait to get my stuff through the post.
Did you find out which the most popular wizard/apprentice combo was Nick?
-
Necromancer, by far. Why do you lot cheer the RingWraiths and boo the Ewoks? lol lol lol
-
Made some more terrain for Frostgrave. Here in the U.S., I am eagerly awaiting the rule book and minatures.
-
Great looking terrain mate, thanks for sharing!

I'm based around Belfast and looking for group.

It looks like the Nickstarters have landed with Brigade Games, so all you Americans who ordered through them should be getting deliveries soon too. Lets be kind and give Lon a bit of time to organise them all.
The good news as well is we put extra books and plastic box sets for him to take to Historicon. We couldn't organise packing Wizards into blister packs as well, so it's just the rulebook and plastic soldier box he'll have there.
-
Not really, just my brother and a couple of friends though we are, for lack of a better term, loosely affiliated with Wee Gamers.
-
Been out this morning- and was kind of hoping to come back to a parcel :(
Oh well I'm sure it'll arrive early next week.

I am really looking forward to get my share of loot. Playing the game is realy a fantastic experience and we are enjoying that far to much.

I have asked for a copy of this (just the book) for my birthday so hoping to get a copy in the week. Gonna find a way to make the rules work with what I have instead of buying a bunch more stuff for it.
-
That was my plan but...I ended up buying a load of new stuff for it o_o
-
Parcel arrived today - all lovely stuff! Minis look ace, and the book is gorgeous!
Thanks for your efforts folks, and well done!

Mine too :)
Looking forward to studying it in depth later on ;)

Books great, treasure tokens are also very nice, not keen on the plastics, in the for sale section if anyone interested lol
-
I do not have the cash to do that. I will have to pick up a few wizards though.
Me neither really, I found myself ordering some expensive scenery! I since calmed down, got some cheaper stuff from Amera and recycled some old stuff I already owned. Same with figures, reusing a lot of old fantasy stuff I have picked up over the years bolstered by some lovely Grenadier models that are half the price of most other stuff!
-
Got mine today too... lol lol ;D ;D

These were my feeling today, excactly.
Kept checking the postbox, in case I missed it :P
-
Mine arrived today - book is very nice, haven't looked at the figures too closely yet, but they look good too.
-
Got mine today! It looks fantastic
Thanks
Blofled

Mine turned up today too, although was more traumatic than I would have liked.
The box was a bit battered but on opening the books and minus were fine, but I didn't seem to have the objectives or the extra free metal bits. (Except liche present and correct!)
Very sad panda.
Emailed Nick and he was very quick to answer. Double checked and found the resin hidden inside the plastic soldiers box but still no sign of the metals. Let Nick know my resins were located. Turns out he told the packer not to do that for specifically that reason!
Anyway, late in the afternoon my posty knocked at the door and gave my wife some metal
Figure bits that he'd found in the bottom of his bag after his round was finished. He guessed
they were for me because he knows I get toy soldiers in parcels regularly 8)
I'd been out in the afternoon and got the good news when I returned home.
It's nice that we've got such a diligent posty.
Anyway, that's much more drama than I usually like from a delivery of wargaming toys. book is lush, models are fantastic and I can't wait to play a game.
Regards
Jim

My stuff arrived today, so I've off course allready stuck together one of the sprues.
I couldn't resist adding a couple of custom bits, though:

Very neat stuff - Looking forward to painting some of them.
-
GW heads?
Hadn't started looking at using those yet. I'd added some fireforge heads to make my Men at arms and soldiers look a little more professional. Now it looks like I've got some more options. :D
Nice work.
-
Yeah. They are from the Greatsword kit. A nice, but hella expensive box - Luckily I got the spare bits from a friend lol
The heats actually fit really well, the bearded one just needed a little bit of trimming around the next.
For the next ones I build, I'll certainly try out a few of the fireforge heads I have lying around as well.
And I am planning to save the last two sprues for when I can afford a box of Gripping Beast Vikings. Glorious kit-bashing!
-
Those great sword heads work well. I only tried with the Free Company/Mordheim heads and they were way too big, clearly the later kits had better proportions.
I can confirm the Fireforge ones also work well although the neck/socket might need a trim.

Good to see, I was hoping to convert them with Flagelants bits (and vice versa), but when i heard they were compatible with 25mm minis i feared that would be impossible. I might give it a try now

I have some flagellant bits as well. I'll go make a mockup, and snap a picture :)
Edit:
Allready done

Seems to fit pretty well. It's a little bit big and you might still need to trim the neck a bit, but thats pretty manageable.
-
One from me. A thug with a head from the Empire State soldiers set.
Swapped out the axe for a club too.
A bit of green stuff to add still.
-
It occurred to me, if you were a real cheapskate, you could actually make a Wizard and Apprentice from the box set. Quick conversion to carrying staffs, use the hooded heads. I'll get Kev on one, see what we can do.
-

I'd been considering that, as well, but the actual wizards and apprentices turned out to be too good to resist.
Definitely looking forward to seeing what Kev comes up with.
I did another couple of builds with the plastic sprue. A treasure hunter and an archer, since I wanted one of both for my warband. They both still need to be greenstuffed, and the archer needs a lot more work, I think.
This head is from the pistoleers/outriders set by gw, and I mostly used it because of the skull. I thought it was fitting for a guy hanging out with a necromancer, even though the helmet propably is a bit too hightech when compared to the rest of the frostgrave miniatures. He looks propperly grizzled, though.
Apart from that, I did some weapon-swapping with one of the sword arms and the mace, as I wanted it to have a better pose. And then I stuck about as much baggage as I could muster onto him.
This guy is a bit more experimental, using a hat from warlord games. I am not too big a fan of this head, so I thought I'd try and fiddle a bit with it. He still needs a bit of work I think (mouldlines and greenstuff).
I find it quite fun to play around with this kit - it works pretty well together with most of the plastics I have, so thats a definite plus to me.
-
If anybody could snap some pictures of the frostgrave guys next to some Empire Free Company or Fireforge guys that would be very helpful. I am really interested in these guys, but held off since they looked like they would scale better with LOTR 25mm stuff than the majority of the stuff I have in my current pile o' plastic, but your conversions have me giving them a serious second look.

I already did that somewhere in this thread... Finding it might be an issue now ::)
Scale perfectly with Fireforge (same sculptor), the Fireforge figures stand slightly taller but that's because of their surprisingly thick base, not the figure. Empire Free Company have rather cartoonish proportions when compared to more modern figures, similar height but I found the heads etc too big to use in conversions. The more modern Empire plastics however combine very well. LotR figures... Depends which ones. The older plastics are more 25mm and will be dwarfed, the newer ones are much closer to 28mm and might mix okay.

Thanks everybody, I have seen that scale picture already, and it was the one that made me pass on buying the miniatures. I was hoping for some additional pictures next to some GW 'heroic scale' miniatures.
They look pretty small compared to the Fireforge stuff, but the conversions with the GW parts look good, so I wanted a second look at them.

Way too small for my liking, but I have been thinking about getting a set for a northern tribe of Hobgoblins. Then I can use the heads on GW figures and the height becomes perfectly fine :).
-
I'm pretty happy with the scale, this means the Red Box Games minis I've been stockpiling will suit just fine.

If no one has done it I'll take a pic with Empire figures when I get home in a week or so. As I said in my post though, the difference in height with Fireforge is down to the base thickness, not the figure. Also that particular pose is very upright.
