... prospective explorers to the frozen city can paint their wizards any way they like.

Absolutely!

What, more precisely, is the nature of the city's ruination?

The exact nature of its destruction has faded from memory, but the most common legend is of a great blizzard that ravaged and finally buried the city. What caused it is unknown, but a thousand years later, the snows have receded, and the city has been rediscovered.

So, some building may have been buried intact and preserved beneath the snow, others may be nothing more than ruins. Some outlying buildings may have been uncovered sooner, and looted by nearby inhabitants. Others may have been gutted by fires during the blizzard, as magical spells went awry or chemical formulae were spilled. The blizzard may have lasted a single night, or been preceded by weeks of prophecies and signs. The blizzard may have been orchestrated by fanatics who rampaged through the streets as the snows fell, or it could have been so sudden that no-one saw it coming.

Pretty much anything goes where magic is concerned, so go for terrain that you like!

I like this answer :)

A bit of every sort of damage, then. Maybe some fire damage here, some iconoclasty there, a strangely intact building over that-a-way, and so on. A fun-loving approach to trashing a city ;)

I asked about the same question a couple of pages ago.

According to The Tales of the Frozen City blurb a thousand years have passed.

Long ago, the great city of Felstad sat at the centre of a magical empire. Its towering spires, labyrinthine catacombs and immense libraries were the wonder of the age, and potions, scrolls and mystical items of all descriptions poured from its workshops. Then, one cataclysmic night, a mistake was made. In some lofty tower or dark chamber, a foolish wizard unleashed a magic too powerful to control. A storm rose up, an epic blizzard that swallowed the city whole, burying it deep and leaving the empire as nothing more than a vast, frozen wasteland. The empire shattered, and the magic of the world faded. As the centuries came and went, Felstad passed from history to legend and on into myth. Only a few wizards, clinging to the last remnants of magical knowledge, still believed that the lost city had ever actually existed. But their faith was rewarded.
After a thousand years, the fell winter has passed. The snows have receded, and Felstad has been uncovered. Its buildings lie in ruins, overrun by undead creatures and magical constructs, the legacy of the empire's experiments. It is an evil, dangerous place. To the few hardy souls who inhabit the nearby villages, the city has acquired a new name, ‘Frostgrave', and it is shunned by all right-thinking people. For those who seek power and riches, however, it is an unparalleled opportunity, a deadly maze concealing secrets of knowledge long forgotten...

Somebody mentioned that the wizards have lairs and that others live near the place, so more recent buildings may appear as well.
Perhaps a simple tavern where explorers meet?

I can't be seen to make common cause with a Gothenburger. Heavens, what will people think of me? :P

Good idea. Perhaps a few shanties of wattle-and-daub, woven reeds or scavenged timbers next to it? Some ruined buildings could have been turned into makeshift dwellings, or windshelters for campfires at least. A gypsy-style caravan or three would be awesome.

Oh, a caravan camp - awesome idea.

Wonder what sorts of bases wizards can have. I understand different bases have different effects. A caravan would be cool.

They might think you are cool and relaxed despite being from [other, not as cool or relaxed, place].  8)

For those who might be interested, I got one of the test sprues of the plastic figures and assembled this size-comparison line-up. From left to right: Perry's Sudanese, Gripping Beast Dark Age Warrior, Frostgrave Soldier, GW Lord of the Rings, Frostgrave Soldier, Fireforge plastic, Frostgrave metal thief.

The shot can be expanded on my blog: http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/frostgrave-soldiers-size-comparison-shot.html

I'm loving all of the talk about different looks to the city and different base possibilities. I must admit, I never thought of a caravan, and there are no rules for such a base. That said, there is no reason not to say a Caravan counts as...

I want Frostgrave to be a fantasy world where people aren't afraid to make up there own stories and visions.

Thanks for the size comparison.confirms their potential for some interesting kit bashing.

Not even thought about a base camp for the wizard band but now that sounds like a fun terrain opportunity. I've thought about doing a terrain piece to represent a camp amongst ruins for my rangers of ithilien- a few small renedra tents, camp fires, spare weapons and equipment. I just might do it now to serve both the rangers and my wizard's band

I can honestly say that our planned family camping trip to Italy is more likely to break my wallet than this purchase. I'm just getting lvl 3 + one extra wizard pack for my regular gaming pal.

I did some comparisons with the plastics myself and that picture reminded me of something I noticed. The Fireforge figure looks taller than the others, he's not. The Fireforge plastics have surprisingly thick tabs under their feet, if you were to shave it to match then he'd be in the same line as all the other figures.
