Cracking little game - are UCAVs particularly powerful in Skirmish Sangin then?
Yeah they are pretty devastating. As well as the effect of the high explosive (Kill zone is max damage and rather large) it also forces a morale test for all irregulars on the board at -40% for the first hit and less for future hits. Downside, unless you have a JTAC it can be hard for it to actually come in.

Totally forgot to post this here (was writing it on the train to Salute) but we played another game in Bazistan. Using Spectre rather than Sangin, the battle sees a Challenger 2 leading a convoy through an enemy held town.

I mention it in the review but its pretty simple. Some very similar elements (wheels and axle units are basically the same), difference is mainly the two part chassis.

Well the Argo Corporation likes to keep its stockpiles of illegal arms very well defended - especially as the buyer is about to hand over the money for them (in an upcoming scenario)

Something a little different this week, brand new scenario. Inspired by the release of Free Fire on Blu-ray this week, I finished off something that's been sat in my scenario pile for a while. Its a neat little warehouse shootout inspired by the film. The post includes scenario files for Skirmish Sangin and Spectre Operations but the details are generic enough to set it up for your rules of choice.

Empress's website is very behind the times, it is still claiming they have added a 28mm WW2 British link to the Mutton Chop British (the figures are available via the Mutton Chop link only).

ChargeDog, very nice AAR and table, CONGRATULATIONS!
I liked very much that you're using PlaySheets and Troops cards with pictures for the players - the way to go specially in a convention game IMHO.
If you think the game was too easy, add a couple of OPFOR snipers in good positions to wreck havoc on the opposition - and remember that the plane's fuselage gives no effective cover from 7.62mm bullets! ;)

Thanks! Glad you like it. I really like Skirmish Sangin and the cards/playsheets should make it a little easier to get brand new players into it. Less time spent looking at the bases of figures to work out whose who.
Yeah, I think splitting the two buildings up to create two sniper nests should make the BLUFOR guys pause for thought.

It does look like the operators had a pretty easy time of it.
It looks like you have some ideas to even it out.
May I suggest more terrain on the table.
Such as, crops, stone fences and little bumps of hills.
That will cut down lines of sight.
Again, love what you have done.

The only problem with adding crops and fences is that this is supposed to be the high desert. I'll probably add some more elevation tweaks or maybe look at some shrub areas.

I also like to purchase figures from small companies to encourage them to make more.
I have found some real gems out there.
The great thing now, there are so many figure companies, we should all find what we want.

Fun stuff, with the werewolves vs. operators! I ran a slightly haunted game last Sunday for the crew, too. Mine featured my Splintered Light Miniatures animals attacking Pulp adventure teams (along with some Pygmy cannibals thrown in!).
It's good to set the tongue in the cheek from time to time... lol

Yep gonna hit them with a can of textured spray paint and they should mostly disappear.

Spectre did their Black Friday sale and also got a massive restock of most of their product lines. Tempted in by this, I've bought all of the African figures I hadn't picked up which led to this massive pile of lead being on my desk today.

My brother bravely or stupidly punched a baboon in the face when it tired to steal his embassy bag last week. It was so confused by the action that it just looked at him, then turned around an stole another of the passengers bags before jumping off the safari bus. :D

Hey chocked it up to luck. And the fact that the other bag had food wich was what the monkey was after in the first place.
He told me he reacted with out thinking, when it reached into the cab. He thought is was trying to grab sister in law so he just reacted with out thinking.

I find it really hard to understand how someone can complain something about reading great insights, info and pictures on a blog about a true game system (great rules and great miniatures)... unless the complains came from a "rival" game company and its "pet internet bots"! lol
I've put the word "rival" between "" because, IMHO, SPECTRE has no true rivals in its field! :D

The force building post is very useful. I look forward to seeing more on this subject.
I also read the starting list post. That is also useful, especially if you are new to Spectre and do not know anyone who plays it.
The SO starter sets are not designed for newcomers to SO, they are a cheaper way of getting two starter forces and the rules. A forces list and an introductory scenario for the forces supplied would make life a lot easier. Oh and the initiative token is a waste of plastic, a "miss" template would be so much more useful.

Maybe they can send you the starter forces and you can supply the force lists and scenarios?

Ah, those are the new spec ops guys from Spectre right? The one on the left may look like a bit of a plonker swinging his axe about like that, but you've managed with them regardless. :D
I take it you're using that pair with the Task Force Nomad lost? Personally I'm thinking the guy on the right could work for the other side, as a random guy using a captured government Anti-Material Rifle (or one donated from some non-state actors).

Glad everyone likes them! They were mainly painted in a poorly lit room so I'm glad they worked out okay!
I'm going to be doing a full impression on them (along with the three Task Force guys) but a few answers.
Guy on the left is to go with the Tier 1 Operators range which is currently serving as the Argo Corp's men in the field (hence the tacticool gear). The axe is for hacking your way through wooden doors and smashing windows which, along with his shotgun, means he is definitely the man picked for breaching actions. The axe in Spectre also gives you a boost in CQB (although limits you to only killing your opponents - guessing the berserker rage comes on).
Guy on the right is definitely for the Task Force Nomad set. One of the things I like about them is, as Wyrmalla says, they would work pretty well with the OPFOR. Either as a team of SF working alongside the militia or a well equipped bad guy. I dread to think what armoury he pillaged to get his hands on a Barrett XM500 though, although it might also be one that had a box of XM25s (if you use more of the Nomad guys)
Just a heads up, next two days posts are not going to be packed with new stuff - it's mainly stats, planning and some cool projects I'm (possibly) looking at

Video content is an interesting approach. I think what you are doing now is working. But I'm not sure what your long term goals are either. Creating good video content can also be very time consuming.

If I was to do video content it would very much be a supplemental thing to the writing - after all the writing seems to be doing a good job of getting people interested! Also writing posts and taking photos take much less time

Good news! After some organisational issues, I got a message this morning that Operation Dragon's Hoard will be showing at Vapnartak in York on 4th of February 2018. This was an event I was really looking forward to and I'm glad we're able to go and run the game.
The bad news is that because of this my planned posts schedule has gone out the window - I'll be spending much of the next week frantically trying to get as much of the improvement work done as I had originally planned. So any post I've mentioned have been pushed back and 2nd of Feb's post might be shorter than usual.

Ah both of them were limited release models from Spectre.
1) is from the original kickstarter - he was the Delta Close support gunner
2) was this year's Salute release. They do a yearly special edition figure that is only available at the show or around the same time.
All I can recommend is to watch ebay for them popping up

I picked up one of those sets myself. Your review covers the set, and its details, though how does it compare to the other options?
Personally for moderns I'd recommend HLBS' Landrover Stowage set. I'm not clued up enough on which particular units use which gear, but it appears generic enough to do for any modern force. Whilst Empress' one will cover further back, HLBS' appearance is distinctively modern with some of its backpacks (by the straps), which is a bit more appealing to me. Unfortunately, despite carrying the rest of the range, Empress don't sell this particular set (which I suppose is fine for HLBS, as it meant I went direct to their site and picked up some other stuff which I'm presume was better for them).
I'd also recommend Die Waffenkammer's sets. They're about the best bang for your buck for stowage (their direct competitor would be Warlord Games, who's stowage pack has about 1/5th of JTFM's). However are distinctly WWII, though a backpacks' a backpack in "generic developing world country number 24".
Ah, not to hijack your thread of course, nor to detract from your blog (though I prefer having the conversation over the forum, as blogs can make that a bit disparate). :)

I haven't picked up any of those others so currently the only one I can compare it against is the Spectre stowage packs (the basic and Razor specific one) which I looked at on the blog when they came out.
Stowage Alfa feels really designed for the SF style of technical with the cooler boxes and pelican cases. The packs though are a nice mix of small assault and the larger carrying types. The LAWs and AT4s are also pretty handy
Razor Stowage Alfa is designed for the Razor but with a trim down the jerry can holders would work on other vehicles.
I agree with you the Die Waffenkammer sets look very much WW2. The HLBS kit however is interesting so it's on my list to take a look at. I do wonder if Empress are planning on making their own set for the Brits hence why they don't sell it.

I suppose in the case of Empress they were already selling their own US stowage it, in which case having a second modern one would dilute the buyers. Better to have the customers buying your one, than have an alternative which you pay commission on. Though that's perhaps a rather shrewd way of looking at things. I don't believe there's much overlap in there ranges besides that one item, unless there's much more of HLBS' moderns which Empress don't sell?
Tsk, and lucky you with the Spectre stowage packs. They haven't been in stock when I've looked since they originally went on sale. Oh for a world where Spectre cast to order, though I assume that they're using a third party for their casting, and its cheaper buying in bulk. Though they did say that they would get their stock issues resolved this year (then promptly ran out of stock following that message...). :)

Hmn, do Anvil Industries do a smaller scale than their Regiments? From what I've seen at shows even their smallest stuff is too large for 28mm. They'd maybe work with Warlord Games WWII plastics proportions (i.e. wider than Empress'), but I'd hazard against expecting much of any of their stuff working. I suppose picking up a few bits for testing isn't going to set you back too much, though waiting for a show to come up where someone's carrying their stuff may be worth it.

I know what you mean, the MG42 looks rather cartoony (the BREN is worse), but I am mainly looking at them for Laserburn or 7TV Wars.
However I am thinking about the PMC range for Human Supremacists for A.G.E.N.T.S. (M4s and skull masks). It would be interesting to see how their weapons compare with other moderns.

Is much of that HLBS stuff now on the Empress site going to be usable for you? I've found that most of it is distinctively from the Cold War period, though are you planning on upgrading any of it to be more contemporary?
I'm still wondering what's going on with HLBS themselves. Having their whole range on the Empress site implies that's how they want to deal from now on, though the HLBS site itself is still active and taking orders. If that's the case then I'd assume buying from them directly may be better for the company?
And yeah, that Armata is interesting. More so in that Special Artizan Services announced that they were making the T-14 just before. The politics of miniatures companies... Empress' one appears more accurate to the production model however, and is probably more convenient for European buyers (SASM is aiming to be more appealing to Americans). I'm debating picking one up for my Russians, though it may explain why my regular opponent uses a British force instead of any of the states their actually fighting right now.:P

I'll admit, the HLBS stuff is not high on my list of things to buy, mainly because the list is rather long, but it does fill some holes (such as the BMP1 for second/third line units) even if the scale is slightly different. However, when I start doing more stuff in the African setting of Zaiweibo, the older vehicles will come in handy either as left overs from the Cold War or as part of more historical games (the Eureka Rhodesia range is tempting me into running some games showing the North/South Zaiweibo Unification conflict).
So Empress - I guess that HLBS is stocking their stuff just for convenience so honestly buy it from where you fancy buying it from. If you're also picking up a load of figures from them, adding a HLBS vehicle to an Empress order is going to save you postage. As for the T14, Empress has a quite long development process on all their ranges (which can lead to situations like the US Rangers last year where Spectre and Empress released at the same time) so it wouldn't surprise me if it was already in the works when SASM showed off their's.
The other thing is that for many people Empress's vehicle are a known quantity - I know the level of detail, ease of assembly and customer service to expect. I haven't picked up one of SASM's cast vehicles yet but I haven't been impressed with any of the 3D printed vehicles I've seen in the flesh.

The Empress T14 looks interesting (first time I have seen it).
The White Dragon figures look good - I will be interested to see how you think they compare to the other ranges.
HLBS have a number of vehicles that interest me, either to fill in for Modern items not available from Empress etc (Spartans etc), Twilight 2000 vehicles or older kit for 7TV (Saracens, Ferrets).
The problem I have found with the two I have seen "in the resin/metal" is that they are rather poor compared to the Empress ones.

Not real happy with 1/56 scale.
All my stuff is 1/50, 1/48.
I did measure a Corgi 2 1/2 ton truck I have.
It measures 5 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide.
If you look at the photo of their 2 1/2 ton,
it measures 4 3/4, maybe 5 inches long by 2 inches wide.
So it is close and should look good on the table.

The question is then how would they be used?

So in MOH: Warfighter they use a Talon to move through an area that would be dangerous for the troops to go through (a collapsing building) without putting any at risk would be one possibility.
In other cases, it would allow the troops to include a support machine gun without someone having to carry it or they could replace sentries (by reducing the number of people needed by controlling multiple units from one console).

Your review makes a number of valid points.
I bought the box set when it was released, I occasionally pull it out and look at them then decide that my time would be better spent elsewhere.
One of the issues with all the Wargames Factory figures is that they are not really multipose, there is the base pose and a few options but the basic body poses are a bit strange (moreso with the other ranges) which means you end up with one tennis player serving per sprue etc.

I'm in the process of putting together one of those Eureka AA DShK right now, but wasn't aware that they were doing the older ground mount variant. I take it that's the Maxim gun looking thing to the left of the image? Its a shame perhaps that the more modern tripods aren't available, though I suppose they wouldn't be too difficult to scratch build. (As ever though, some non-Insurgent style crew would be appreciated as well for other settings, but well that's never going to happen).

Yeah, the ground mount is the Maxim-esque setup (complete with gun shield and spotter). It was one of the very latest releases from them (so new that you'll need to email Nic at Eureka directly to order it)
The AA DShKs are lovely models (especially if you have aircraft on the board) but they have a nasty habit of taking dives off the table and bending the barrel.

I'm splitting this release in half (due mainly to the old finances) and the first two vehicles were ordered today. I'm aiming for an initial impressions (i.e. not painted) covering the basics of the range before the end of the month (maybe as soon as 15th depending on when they arrive) with follow ups (after buying some more vehicles and turrets) coming over the next few months.

Based on the gunners they have previewed (https://www.instagram.com/p/BddvZOvB3CA/?taken-by=spectreminiatures), it looks like it's partial height. I've got some Empress crew I'm planning to compare. Expect a fair chunk of comparison and investigation into cross compatibility in the first impressions.

The other interesting thing is there is no option for the skeleton version, from my memory of Evan Wright's book (and the mini series) (so YMMV) the US 1st Reconnaissance battalion used HMMWVs without doors.

From what I've looked at in the Haynes Manual (impressions coming soon), there were the upgraded Humvees (the M1114) and basic armoured kits around in the Balkans but only in very small amounts. As they were used for more combat roles, that's when the bulk of the armour kits were developed
As for no skeleton version, having an interior would require a different shell to the fully enclosed version. Otherwise you'd be paying way more. However, I'd also like to see Spectre do a version! Skeleton versions were also used in Afghanistan to make them more suited for the terrain and on the SF versions so plenty of use cases.

Special Artizan Service Miniatures have just shown off their own Humvee. Which happens to be a partially skeletonised variant, well, at least it has an interior. I believe they're charging $55 for it, though it also comes with 4 crew - both sitting in the vehicle and dismounted, so you're paying for them.

Currently I'm in two minds which to go for. The Spectre ones seem to meet the basic layout requirements for many of the variants available. Though them being solid resin pieces may mean some work's required to alter them. Meanwhile the SASM vehicle, whilst having an interior, also lacks doors (if you wanted to go the way of say replacing them with those half door armoured sheets you'd see).
Spectre's I guess works if you're going for an enclosed Humvee, whilst well, SASM's what you go for if you want an interior and are willing to scratch build some parts. Personally I'm thinking that SASM's may be more appealing to modellers over that older Tamiya kit in that whilst its not plastic, it is 1/50th rather than 1/48th. It is probably worth saying that SASM also have two of the Humvee's replacements for sale as well though, if you're wanting to cover near future games (though one's already in service).
I'd been eyeing up remaking one of those Ukrainian airborne Humvees for my 28mm (I'd made on previously, but it was 1/43rd scale). For convenience Spectre may be the way to go if you're in the UK or Europe just as they're local, and it would mean being able to buy some more stuff from their site to go with it (that is, if the other stuff is in stock...). ...I am wanting one of those new Russian drones that SASM just brought out though. :D
Thanks for the write up, its given me something to think about. Its good to read that they're casting these in house so they may not have the same supply problems that they've had with other products.

At Salute 2017, UTI Long Smile said that Crooked Dice had a Mini being sculpted, though he was concerned that "Agents from a vague but menacing government agency" had spirited the sculptor away. As we have heard no more I suspect that might be the case.
Does anyone else do a 1/50 scale mini (proper one not a BMW).

I don't know if I'm late to the party, but the M1114 was in production in 1996, and were in the Balkans, then the Middle East, along with M998s and whatever else they could scrounge up. The increased threat of IEDs, EFPs etc led to the development of the M1151, which was further armoured, and deployed to Iraq in 2006 I believe. Then the bombs got bigger, and MRAPs started surfacing (I believe first with the USMC) in 2007-8.

I just got done talking with the folks at Under fire minatures and they said thar the M1 helmet US should be back from thr mold guus in 5-7 weeks. So fingers crossed on a early Autumn release.

This week's post is up! We're taking a look another vehicle for all you US Army fans, the Styker ICV and MGS from Empress.
"Playing as US force in Ultramodern tabletop wargaming is like being a kid with a box of toys. There are so many options that are available! On one side, you could be rolling around in technicals as SF advisers alongside local troops. Alternatively, you could break out the heavy metal and plonk the Bradleys and Abrams on the table. An interesting option is to roll out with a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and all the vehicles it includes."

Hi, i have been reading your blog for the last few weeks and have been well entertained !! Great information on all of the Spectre moderns releases, this has got me back into wanting to do moderns and playing a skirmish game suits me better, might start with Cartel figures to get some drug wars/ secret agent type games starting but there is plenty of scope for so many different games on the horizon

Glad you like blog! It's great fun (and a little stressful) to write about figures so much so hearing people being entertained by it makes it all worth while.
I really need to paint up my Cartel guys (still trying to work out the best way to fit them into the Middle Eastern/African theatre my games are set in) but I think they are one of the best ranges Spectre does. Nice mix of figures and you could easily split the range in half to do some Cartel vs Cartel fights. Also everyone starts by saying "I'll play a skirmish game" and then suddenly you find yourself with a platoon of figures :v

It'd be nice if someone were to make some after market modernisation kits fro those Empress vehicles. They're a bit dated for modern combat. For instance they do a BTR-80A, but not an 82A - which is currently seeing wider use (the layout of the turret module is different). Its something we could do ourselves, and probably too much of an investment for Empress, but with them continually releasing modern figures, it would be nice to have some vehicles that aren't quite so dated to go along with them. :/

Empress have recently produced the T14 and the Tigr (the other "new" stuff has been Blitzkrieg and HLBSCo - which are a better fit for Cold War 1).
The new Bundeswehr could do with some wheels .

Aye, I've found that thus far Empress are slowly making more modern stuff, but currently we're treading water a bit when it comes to the "ultra moderns". The thing is though with that is that HLBS' range was likely "ultra modern" at the time of release, so its difficult for manufacturers to keep up (at least in this scale, 1/35th is better for it) with the latest innovations. More so when the today's tank in reality is quickly replaced.
It would be nice though if they were to come out with upgrade kits for the most ubiquitous modernisations of their kits that have appeared over the past decade. I.e. an armour kit for the Bradley. Though their stuff is still usable for say second line units, or less developed countries, those wanting top of the line gear have to do it themselves currently.
Spectre, with their proprietary kits, have done some variants for their Humvee that would modernize it. As have Special Artizan Service Miniatures indicated their intention to do something similar (they however have such a quick turnaround on their vehicles that they're capable of following trends in development).
I've asked for companies to do some ERA sets to modernize older vehicles .That's still up in the air whether that will happen - as the NATO ones at least tend to be specific to an individual vehicle in their layout, so you'd need a dedicated after market kit per vehicle. Spectre have said they're doing a CROWs weapon system, which will go a ways to upgrading NATO vehicles too. But really, it is those armour kits which define modernized vehicles, but which are difficult to do at scale for say Empress' entire range.

You know, it took me a second to work out why we were talking vehicle upgrade kits based on my last post.
I think the thing at the moment is ultramoderns is still an incredibly niche market and aftermarket conversion kits are a niche within that niche. For many gamers (probably most of them), as long as it basically looks alright then it's used. If it looks like a BTR, rolls along the board like a BTR and bursts into flames like a BTR, then does minor changes like the positioning of the hatches really matter? It's the same reason you see the massive variation in scales of civilian vehicles people use.
So from an economic perspective, when this project is taking cash out of something more lucrative (like a figure range), why bother spending the time on developing some thing that will either be seen as an additional hassle or just be home made. It's probably also the reason we haven't seen upgrades like cage armour or generic ERA blocks - it's a chunk of work and for the people bothered about it, they'll either custom build it themselves or find the local tech priest/converter to do it.
The natural answer of course is just to make ultramoderns less of a niche :v

Yeah, I was being a grognard over the cover image for your post have a BTR-80A rather than a BTR-82A, which put me off on that whole spiel. I'd been considering making a 82 for my modern Russians, as that's what's seen wider service, but the 80A is still used as well of course (and I have an BPPU turret spare for a 30mm upgrade to an armoured car whenever I get around to it). :)

ERA and cage armour are interesting points, too generic and you might as well scratch build them, too specific and they sell to three people...

A generic Soviet ERA and slat armour set could be useful though for those wanting to make some generic vehicles. For instance slat armour for a BTR-60 would do all the other variants. Though it would likely have to represent an ad-hoc set, rather than a proprietary one better shaped for the vehicle. Though I can see a generic brass etched set being a thing - with the user cutting the plates to shape, but at the same time that could be something that you do from Plasticard.
This is something more easily available in 1/35th due to the variety of kits and need of the market for accuracy. In wargaming scales most gamers probably don't know the difference between a BTR-60 and a BTR-70, so that a vehicle is lacking specific features is probably lost on most of the customer base for these companies. With those who are dedicated enough being willing to make them themselves, at least those who're wanting a degree of accuracy similar to say 1/35th scale (which I suppose isn't many).
Still, its a wonder that we don't have a generic ERA kit available, as it would be so universal for updating older vehicles, or militia vehicles. I may have to chase that idea again (or just make my own moulds ...if I can be bothered casting them at the scale you'd need for even one vehicle)...

I bought some of those new Spetsnaz too (the belt fed PKM would be great for my Separatists). Though their faces look cold. Could do with some of those Russian standard face masks that they're always wearing. ;)

I can agree that the transition to individual packs is for the better, despite the increase in the prices. The resin not so much, as from the set that I bought the pieces seem to have similar issues, if minor in comparison, to the Humvee. Specifically the bubbles that you mentioned, some minor mould slips, and on one of the crates a pretty substantial bubble that will need to be filled.
The small cooler came with that set that I ordered as well. A pity that all the launchers are Western, rather than some Soviet ones, but hopefully they'll release a dedicated Russian themed one in future for those states where there's a mix of launchers in service.

Interesting. How do the Javelins compare to the Empress ones?
Not sure about the multiblock jerry cans. Sometimes you do want them like that, othertimes you want multiple cans.

Considering that Die Waffenkammer's stowage set already includes loads of Jerry Cans, another manufacturer making sets isn't too bad. As you wind up finding opportunities to stick them together eventually anyway. Rubicon also do something similar with their sets - having them both individual and in rows. I guess it makes keeping them neat easier. The handles on the Spectre set are nicer than the Die Waffenkammer ones though - more clarity to the gap in the handle.

As for the Javelins, the Spectre ones are a bit bigger. Grabbed a photo for you compared to the Javelin from the British support weapons. I wouldn't mix them in the same pile/on the same model but you could use them as an alternative

My guess would be that both the Humwees would have been destroyed by the IED. for starters.

Differently. I'm sure the vehicles would have probably been destroyed but there may still have been survivors (seeing as you roll for crew member lethality in Spectre rather than just "immobilised but crew okay" or "destroyed and everyone KIA" that a penetrating hit in skirmish sangin causes - I'm going to house rule some tweaks to this).
On the other hand, I think Spectre's lack of spotting would probably have meant that there would have been more fire going down range and a lot more casualties/suppressed groups.

Thanks for all the kind words, glad everyone enjoyed it. Really want to get more battle reports written (mainly so I get to play some more). I'm planning a scenario pack to be this year's Christmas special (details still TBA) and so hopefully I'll be able to get some battle reports of that in the next few months.
Hindsight is 20/20. I don't have military experience but I think the procedure the ADF player took would have been classed as reckless in any AAR. The vehicles were way too close together, meaning in the event of a strike both were damaged. If I had been playing (and hadn't written the scenario) I'd have probably either
a) pulled off the road into a overwatch position at a safe distance and then tried to identify if the vehicle was a threat (using the FLIR optics available on the second vehicle). If the device was spotted, the players could have declared they were waiting for engineer support (meaning they would be sat in the open and vulnerable to OPFOR attack, especially from the ratlines) or have engaged the vehicle with the M2 or MK 47 to try and detonate it (dangerous as the exact capabilities would be unknown)
b) go off road and avoid the possible threat entirely. This would slow the convoy down and might leave them exposed to enemy fire for longer but it does mean they could continue the mission. It would also be a hearts and minds disaster as the device might end up being left in place and used against local civilians

I love Napoleonic games but Skirmish Sangin is really something else. I just wish my recoiless rifle hadn't gone right through the first humvee but the bomb maker did get away....

Great battle report! One thing I love about modern gaming the objectives tend to be fluid, if you take heavy casualties then you regroup and fall back unlike other games where people just fight until they rout.

That quad copter looks so cute on that flying stand. :)
Maybe a bit of wire would be more suitable. Though those things fly so high that they're perhaps more of a visual element than something you'd normally see on a table.
Considering their use in modern warfare for artillery spotting and similar activities, along with that other drone, I wonder if we'll be seeing more of an expansion on this equipment. I'd like to see some larger drones like the Russians have being produced similar to what SASM did, if there's a market that is.

Slat armour would be difficult to cast in resin, if the thinner pieces on Spectre's vehicle kits are anything to go by. Which leaves spaced armour - which wouldn't be difficult to make yourself - , or stuff like ERA - which IIRC Special Artizan Service Miniatures are considering doing a set of.
A set of spaced armour if made would likely sell, though slat armour would be more ubiquitous for militaries and more likely to sell. A kit to turn the vehicle into a BMP-2D (once the BMP-2 is released) would be nice, if they don't make it one of those by default to differentiate it from this original kit.

You guessed right - these are for Bazistan, the champion alignment flip flop nation of the Arabian Peninsula hence the mix of US, Russian and European equipment.

Oh, I mean the 1/35th and 1/72nd scale companies do it on etched brass. And Empress do their's in resin. I'm just commenting that Spectre's thinner resin pieces have had quality control issues is all, so they'd need to beef that up if doing a full set of cage armour.
And personally slat armour can be made with plasticard, if it is time consuming. However, a dedicated kit wouldn't go amiss - as most gamers wouldn't care about the nuances of specific kits being used by different countries (the difference between wargamers and historical modelers in other scales).

I've been considering a format similar with what you're going with now, as real life kind of gets in the way of talking about dollies.
Though my own issue is that I don't like posting stuff in a half finished state, and would rather come up with a long post discussing a finished model, than incremental ones as the project develops (leading to the final post being fairly short). The issue with that however, is that you wind up having dry spells in content, followed by one bumper post a month which goes a bit overboard.
Keeping a decent pace, with smaller projects, rather than multiple large ones, may be the way to go with that. Ah, though again personally, I distract myself and wind up starting something new constantly.
As long as the posts keep coming, this would help with avoiding posting "dud" content for the sake of keeping a schedule. If you're sticking to places like Facebook then the post's more to be a conversation starter than anything. Meanwhile on forums people are fine with project blogs with incremental updates, it keeps things active here I suppose.

It seems up the same alley as Day of the Rangers, and well if you have read I wouldn't mind hearing some opinions before I pick one up. :)

I had the pleasure of commanding the local rebels and the mercenaries. It was very different from the other games we've played in that for once I had decent troops that could actually compete in a stand up fight instead of relying on ambush tactics. I sent the dross to act as speedbumps on the flanks as I realised turn one I could get he mercs into position to snatch the Intel from the Humvee before help arrived to the stranded soldiers. This really surprised Mike as I'm not normally tgat aggressive. If the US troops had made a fight of it I might have been in trouble but the smoke grenades did their job beautifully blocking LOS. The fluke grenade and RPG were icing on the cake.
I think both players managed to roll 100 and fumble at least once but oh that 001 was so sweet. I was worried right up until the end and breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was all over. I hardly fired a shot tbh but had to think constantly. It's a very different system but I do like it. I look forward to more mystery men shenanigans next month.

I did notice from my reading of the rules that vehicles seemed a bit odd.
I like the idea on the limit of penetration effect.

Like always love to read your Battle Reports, reading your blog is what got me into modern wargaming and what tends to inspire me to paint more of my lead when I've been off it for awhile. Sadly not been able to actually play much myself.
It's always how it is - going away for a month kicked me off my grove so I'm now desperate to get the games in. Glad you still like the blog!

So as well the textured spray, going to add a few elements like door frames and window ledges. Then need the extra wiring, air conditioning boxes and more. Don't worry, it will all be on the blog.

Always great to see your stuff, you continue being one of the very few wargaming blogs I follow actively. I wouldn't worry too much about the content since you continue following the releases and news in this area of the hobby. Not been playing Modern Warfare myself but been watching a few people do it over on YouTube and it certainly seems smack full of ideas. The most striking one for most seems to be the early night-time raid on the house, made me pale a bit at how many bits and bobs such a board would require though. The terrain is what has kept my modern wargaming fairly miminal so far in general.

I think a lot of the stuff in the last year has been a little odd. For a starter pack, I'd have gone for basically matching (two Assault Rifle, AR/UGL, LMG, SMG, DMR) except one guy who could have something special to play around with. I'd think this may be a little more about rotating old stock than actually being a good intro to the rules.

I'd say it's pretty close, definitely that feel. I'm looking forward to digging into it more.
The wet pallette is basically a wet sponge + parchment paper. it lets the paint on the top draw just a little bit of water up to keep it damp. So far it's a good system, will be especially useful when painting platoons/squads.

I am debating on picking up that tactics Imperial set my self. But might wait to o see if any locals are interested first.
Also great news on the Empress front. Those are some much needed kit for the late war Brits. Maybe get some anti-tank guns while we are AT it. From fingures crossed for some bofers and a light mountain gun from the book. :D

Yep, I'm really glad that I'm finally able to put the space aside.
those buildings are two of the apartment blocks from Knights of Dice's Tabula Rasa range. It's a great range, and looks even better once you put a few details on it and get it painted up

Are the White Dragon vehicles 1/56.
Yep they are 1/56 - which is a bit weird when their models are also more heroically scaled? However, the Mastiff should be big enough not to cause a problem.

Love the guard models. I just feel they need one more highlight to really help them pop! A cream/flesh highlight on the skin would go a long way towards knocking back the yellow and making them look less like jaundiced Simpsons characters ;)

Thanks for the feedback - haven't really done much with the highlighting, just like the feel of letting the agrax do its work. Will give it a go though.

How do you like the Tiny Wargames cloth mats?
I'm thinking their North Africa mat might be good for both my 6mm and 20mm games set in and around the region. I don't want anything too green, as that would limit my usage for battles in the Sinai, but too sandy rules it out for anything more Afghan. This would be much easier if the Minister for War and Finance let me spend what I want ;)

Hi, I haven't used the tiny wargames mats - mine are from Geek Villian distributed by Tiny Terrain (too many people called Tiny!). However, it's a rather good looking pattern, desert but not too barren.

I'm not keen on modern historical games because I just feel a bit uncomfortable
With them, that's just me and no criticism or judgement intended but I've been reading through your game reports and they are facinating and compelling actions for any gamer. The decisions required and realism involved are outstanding.
Absolutly brilliant, just sad that I discovered you at the point when you are slowing down on the blog. Hope things look better in the future and maybe you start back revitalized. Whatever you do the blog is an amazing inspiration, so thanks a lot for the effort you put into it.

Seriously though, this isn't the end of the blog. It's just more that I don't think the weekly update is needed (both for my sanity and the news I cover) - smaller posts written when things happen I think will do a far better job and are more exciting. I will still continue to keep blogging and painting and playing (especially as I've now started a regular gaming slot against my Dastardly Regular Opponent over in York). So fingers crossed I'll still be here to push/drag more players into moderns (as long as you don't mind a few diversions along the way)

It's definitely looking like an interesting shakeup from the V1 rules. Your commentary is great, and really highlights some of the changes worth watching.
I particularly like the new tempo system. While I never saw combat, the experience of having the initiative and rolling against an opponent on the backfoot even in a training environment is really noticeable. This isn't reflected in most tabletop rules, so I'm excited to see how this plays when I get kit on table :)

I must admit, I was very lucky in getting in early before they got big. That said, I think they have realised how screwed it was (the plan to take resin production in house was catastrophic for quality and stock level) and have taken the time to slowly bring stuff back up. So I've put my order in for the new stuff and we'll see how it goes.
If the models were even slightly worse, then my patience wouldn't be at this level.

Also new, I've put Geek Gaming's Base Ready Scenics on the base. This is the Arid Grassland stuff and I'm really happy with it - which means I have to go back and do it for the other 543+ painted figures in the collection, not to mention all the other stuff waiting to be painted.

I completely understand and agree with you on this. It can be fun to game modern scenarios with actually places and events in mind, but sometimes it leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. Even after reading books on WWII, WWI, and even as far back as the American Civil War, there is something off-putting about playing a game about something so horrible as war.
That being said, I think there is a way of respectfully taking part in the game while also having fun, and being able to draw lines on what you will field on the table is one of those ways.

I totally understand that. My ultra moderns are mostly set in fictional or no longer existing imaginary nations with some real world analogs. Like I am Using The Prussian Democratic Republic for more post Warsaw Pact rump state.
Causing problems in Eastern Europe. I am having it mostly threaten the Natural City state of Danzig and the Baltic nations. But say if stuff does happen in the region, I will bring a few of my other imagination back such as Zubrowka and The Grand Duchy of Courland.
Hell might do that anyways. Then I didn't have to worry about some one griping that I didn't paint their countries uniforms correctly. lol

My Rome wouldn't be as all-powerful as the Empire in some fiction (like the Romanitas novels) and would have some vaguely recognisable history, nations and individuals, but would open things up for more wild cults and independence movements etc.
Might start a thread to begin developing some ideas.

Hey everyone - still here, just bad at checking forum threads and working on too many projects.
I've ordered the new Spectre Insurgent PMC figures, I think they will be great for some of my Bazi SF. Will definitely be painting them as soon as they arrive, so will be aiming to get a blog post up on them and their gear soon.
I'm also planning a game using them, partially as an excuse to take a look at the beta version of Sangin Version 2 - really wanting something nice and crunchy for a small scale engagement. Will be a solo game, but you know how much I like telling a story with them.

Not especially, they seem to fit together pretty well. Going to run some more games with them to see if they stand out.
I'm actually really getting back into Ultramoderns after a long break looking at more fantastical things (except when Spectre release). But I've been working on some of my fictional setting (which is on my personal wiki (https://hntdaab.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=ChargeReal)) and beginning to work on forces for each of them.
Part of this has been helped out by some 3D printing options. Just grabbed some Combat Octopus files from Patreon and got to work printing away. Here are the first four I've painted up, and I'll be writing up some more impressions.
