Empress Brits as Highlanders?
« on: 02 July 2009, 04:11:53 PM »
Judging from my Ospreys, it looks like if I paint the trews in a Campbell tartan and the ammo pouches black, these figs will work as the 91st Highlanders (if I can just dig up a piper somewhere!)  Are there any equipment or uniform differences anyone else knows about that I may be overlooking?

Also, I would ask the ladies from Empress, are you planning on doing any highland troops sometime?

Thanks

Steve

I have been tempted to do something like this myself. I am not a button counter and fairly relaxed about odd bits of kit. The jackets could do with rounded skirts maybe?

I am currently painting them for use in East Asia in khaki jackets as a Pontoonier order has failed to materialise and if like me you dont give a hoot what others think and your happy with them then go for it. Dont forget to post pics though.

I have half an eye on the Musketeer BEF ones as a possibilty too.

I think that you can use a piper from the new releases GWM Or Musketeer, although they are of a later time.

The cut of the frock is different (most noticeably at the bottom front where, as Svenn says, the skirts are rounded rather than straight) and there are pockets with some fancy lace and buttons (or false pockets that are just flaps, not sure which) below the level of the belt. The cuffs are radically different, too. None of this would be too difficult to convert though, I don't think.

The Osprey British Forces in Zululand  1879 has a nice colour plate with an officer, a sergeant, a piper (whose uniform appears to be dark blue) and a private. Would be very useful if you do decide to convert.

Hi,

Yes we plan to cover both the 91st in trews for the AZW and the highland regiment involved in the 1st Boer war who wore kilts and a plain khaki tunic. This will be at some point and with this year speeding past probably next year.

You can convert the current figures into the 91st although the tunic was very different with laced cuffs and rounded skirts on the tunic. Officers uniforms and equipment was also very specific.

91st didn't wear tunics. The jacket of the dress uniform was called a doublet (I admit that is splitting hairs and button-counting of the first order). In Zululand both the dress doublet and the undress frock were worn in the field.

Thanks for the scoop folks. Sounds like the conversions would be very complex, so I think I will wait for the figs next year. Hope there will be some other new Empress releases soon; looks like a lot of cool stuff in the pipeline...
