1-2-3 Basing? Anyone doing it?
« on: 03 April 2021, 02:44:43 PM »
A few years old now, but a new idea to me.
https://ospreypublishing.com/blog/rebels_and_patriots_basing/

Has anyone picked up on this and use it? I can see the utility for certain games but it seems it would prevent maybe universal use for some figures. I mean, I like the idea of using my painted models in multiple games and this might prevent that?

Vodkafan has been persuading me, & I will try it.
Firstly for our upcoming 28mm Ancients Skirmish project,
then for a complete revamp of my 15mm Sci-Fi.
But so far no actual experience.

I think it works well for less formal troop types, I intend to swap over my Napoleonic skirmish basing to 1-2-3

This looks good. I think I want to do this with for Dragon Rampant with Citadel LotR minis. Buuuuut if I ever want to use the minis for The Middle Earth Strategy Game proper or Rangers of Shadow Deep, I sorta can’t?

I don't play any games that necessitate it, but if I did, I'd definitely consider it.  I generally try to avoid basing miniatures for any specific game where possible.

I’ve based up 10mm Napoleonics for Rebels and Patriots using this style and really like it.

I’d certainly consider if for other skirmish games, particularly using smaller figures, ultimately you have half the number of figures to move around. But you still have flexibility over positioning of figures.

I'm not a fan of multi-basing for any game where generally 1 figure = 1 man as I like everyone to have the freedom of movement from one another that they would have in reality (though I accept in some eras they wouldn't really spread out all that much). But I can see that this 1 - 2 - 3 basing is particularly versatile for smaller scale skirmishing, as demonstrated by fred. Saves the fiddliness of moving all those teeny tiny models about.

I keep thinking about it, but then keep backing out when the selected figures are too cool/characterful not to be able to use individually. Perhaps if I do more plastic Warlord pike and shotte I will give it a go...

I base everything individually, but because I haven't found anyone to actually play with, that's not much of an obstacle! I think that if I were to play any system using group bases I would just get magnetic sheets or the like (everything is based on washers).

Nice paint job on those.

This 1-2-3 basing looks alright on troops that operate in a cloud. Not so much for formed units. The 3 base might be a bit restrictive in some terrain although the diorama potential might appeal to some.
