Battle Report: The Battle at the Well

I'm not fabulously well-off in the friends department, so this one was a solo game. My painting output is also next to nothing at the moment (due to various factors) so I thought I'd play a small game with some of the forces I've produced so far, instead of waiting until I'd finished every model, which is weeks away at least.

Let the battle commence...


The Backstory

And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came about harvest time to David at the cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped in the valley of Reph′aim. David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. And David said longingly, “O that some one would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate!” Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took and brought it to David.

- 2 Samuel 23: 13-16


The Objectives

• David's men must go to the Well of Bethlehem and spend an action to fill up a skin with water, then bring it back to their table edge.
• The Philistine raiders must prevent any of David's men escaping off the table with the water.

The Three

The Report

1. The Philistines advanced toward the well...




2. The Three moved into view, while their acompanying archers took position on a rocky outcrop...




3. The Philistines rushed to meet The Three in battle, brandishing their long iron swords. One of them is hit by an arrow and dashes into cover behind a rock.




4. The Philistine Commander climbed atop the outcrop to deal with the archers. One of them tried to push him backwards off the rock, but found himself on the wrong end of the Commander's sword. The other archer hit the commander with an arrow, before scrambling down to safety.




5. Things weren't going so well for The Three. While Jashobeam finished off a wounded Philistine with his spear, Shamaah and Eleazar fell before the Philistine swordsmen.




6. The second archer was cut down by a Philistine warrior. Now there was only Jashobeam left...




7.  Jashobeam made a dash for the well, and successfully filled up a skin of water.




8. Jashobeam killed a second Philistine, but then he found himself surrounded by the Commander and his two bodyguards. He fought valiantly, wounding two of them, but eventually he too was cut down.




The Outcome

Nice miniatures and terrain.
The game seems simple and fun.

The terrain is a TT Combat 'Desert' battlemat (Kill-Team sized) and the rocks are 'Barren Ground' and 'Barren Hills' from Monster Scenery.

I'm a shameless fan of pre-painted terrain!

I did paint the well, though. That's from Fogou Models.
