What happened here?
« on: 06 January 2024, 08:59:53 PM »
First time this has happened.  I'm stumped, and all my buddies who paint a lot more than me are also stumped.

Plastic magnetic tiles.  Washed, scuffed with sandpaper.  Spray primer that I've always used, acrylic paints.  Wash, then let dry for days.  Hit it with matte coat spray and it immediately does this.  Not all tiles, just random, and the paint just wiped off.  Once dried, seems solid, but cracked.  I'm super angry for ruining this stuff, but also want to know what happened.

Wow, that’s bizarre! I can’t offer any suggestions about what’s going on- never seen anything like it.

I have. We painted our basement floor. Paint took well. Job looked great. A couple days later my uncle comes for a visit to see our house. Walks on the floor and it did exactly what happened to your bases. The paint stuck to his socks and then started to wipe off. After talking to my wife's uncle who spent 30 plus years in the paint business, he told us the batch was not correctly mixed with the right chemical ratios and reacted to cleaning solutions at the factory level where they clean out the large vats to make paint between batches. He told us to remove all the paint from the floor and use a good paint thinner to remove all the "paint residue" and either leave the floor unpainted or get a different paint. After scrapping the floor clean we left it and got a used floor carpet to cover up the blothy floor as some paint adhered really well. My suggestion get a good paint thinner, wash the washes in a very mild soapy water solution, t8nse well, ensure the dry and try another paint brand. Good luck!!

P.S. it took us 4 to 6 weeks to remove the paint with 2 putty knives/ paint scappers and mineral spirits.
Victory is guaranteed to the last man standing, but always remember those whom you stepped on to get there!!
