Alternative rules to GF9's Clash of Steel?
« on: July 03, 2024, 05:10:27 AM »
Gale Force Nine released/is releasing a tank-on-tank game set in an alternate history 1948, featuring experimental or hypothetical tanks and assault guns. The rules come in starter kits with tanks. However, i have access to 3d printed tanks, so I don't actually need the models, just the rules. I don't think they plan to sell the rules separately, at least not any time soon.

So, I was wondering if there were any other tank-on-tank games that either have tank stats for vehicles like the American T-28, or the German Maus. Failing that, are there any tank-on-tank games where you think it might be relatively easy to extrapolate stats?

The only current tank-on-tank games I know of right now are What a Tanker, and the relatively new Achtung! Panzer (though I have several older sets), but those are quite strongly tied to WWII.

Any recommendations?

Well, there's Tanks!, which was replaced with/by World of Tanks, which appears to me to be almost exactly the same game (can't confirm this though; I only have the first game myself).

It's a pretty simple affair, with stats on cards, and it would be quite easy to mod some other tanks/vehicles in.

So it's just a matter of you liking the mechanics or not (FYI: we 'broke' the game on the very first try with the introduction scenario. Just don't have too experienced or rules-savvy players and it'll be fine ::) )...

Yes What a Tanker is firmly set in WW2 but I don't think many of the "experimental" vehicles from the end of the war are that much different technologically from late WW2 tanks. I'm pretty certain someone came up with a new "points system" for WAT which explained how to calculate the cost of a vehicle using weapon size and armour thickness etc etc. Knowing a bit more about the actual vehicle characteristics will help complete the job.

Problem is I can't find the file.

Can anyone else help?
