A quick look at the Wargames Atlantic Shield decals
« on: August 15, 2025, 06:16:11 AM »

I just picked this set from Michigan Toy Soldier. They are bright, crisply drawn and should be a dream to use (just remember to gloss the face of the shield before applying). Not cheap, but time is money, and I would have to spend a LOT of time trying to match these with a paintbrush!

You know what, they're actually really nice.
So many medieval shield transfers are actually little more than livery symbols and not actually heraldic shields.
But these are actually shields with coats of arms on them.
Only a couple of quibbles.
Firstly, I would prefer they hadn't bothered with the 'battle damaged' versions. All the shields have a bit of wear and tear to them anyway, and I would have preferred all different shields rather than repetition. Effectively, a third of the designs are unusable because they have been repeated. You're actually only getting 24 for your money.
Secondly, I would also have preferred them to have either gone with ALL actual historical coats of arms or ALL invented rather than the mix this is. There's merits and demerits with either approach but one way or the other would have been best. And the ones that are actual historical coats of arms should have been labelled as such so users know who they belong to.
But, overall, these are easily the best medieval shield transfers I've seen because they are actual coats of arms.

I used the word 'actual' quite a lot there, didn't I?
