Pulp City vs. Supersystem - I Want to Know

Which do you think is better and why?

How fast are the playing times for the games?

Are the rules good for kids?

I've looked at Pulp City - Is there a "blank card" so you can make your own characters? Is there a "printer friendly" version?

Like the battle reports I've read.

My personal view? I prefer Pulp City for its core mechanic and minis range; but Supersytem offers much more flexiblity in custom character creation.

Fromm my experience, roughly compartable - the more minis the longer the game.

Both are pretty straight forwards, but again I'd say the core resolution mechanic may be easier to grasp in pulp City, but in terms of background content, Supersytem is likely more suitable.

No Pulp City character creation at this time (although Minions - henchmen - are do-able), but something is in the works, but not to be available until much further down the road ASFAIK.

On behalf of everyone (Supersystem fans, Pulp City fans, and fans of both) who have done Battle Reports, then thank you.

Both systems have their good and bad points, I prefer Super System because I wanted a game where I can make any hero from scratch.

Also, through the web and second-hand dealers, figures for Super System (Heroclix etc) are really cheap.

The problem with Super System is the rules are a little clunky, this is not difficult to fix, but should be mentioned anyway.

I'm a goalsystem junkie.  Never played Pulp City, so I can't comment on it.  The Supersystem is toolbox system, just about everything you need for the game is included.

Have to throw my hat in with the Super System as well because it's not IP specific and you can stat up any of your miniatures for a bit of spandex clad folks bashing each others brains in with a comic book level of blood as it were. The system can get a little complex if you're using a lot of figures with a lot of powers but that's rather par for the course with any game that has a plethora of powers represented on the tabletop.

Not as much a comment regarding the thread...... given your location.  Best Lead Adventure Screen name ever.  :D

I second what hatguy and 2gun say. Supersystem is better becasue you can make up your own heros/villians. I have played both, and I know what I prefere. That said, if you have a mate like Leon, who is soft enough to spand all his spare cash on the entire range  of pulp city minis, then spend one entire year painting them, then you might as well play pulp city. Pulp city is a lot of fun, but personally I like the free-form nature of SS.

Also a point worth mentioning is that your "Supers" in Super System don't have to be heroes or comic book characters, I'm working on a Ratchet & Clank figure as well as John McClaine and my friend is statting up a Predator. Someone mentioned making a Chuck Norris, but was quickly removed for the safety of others.

 lol

I've described the Supersystem in the past as being flexible enough to use for Starship combat, as well as super powered heroics.  All it takes is a little bending of the rules and a bit of renaming for the attributes and powers/qualities.

I have just purchased the Super System v3 rules and I have to say, there is a really large amount of customising here. They also include temapltes for heroes if you want a quick game.

I guess the rather more complex rules are required if you want to make the most of the really cool super powers. There is a huuuuuge level of customising here, so if that's what you are after I highly recommend buying this.

You can literally use any miniature, which is great too.

In terms of how easy the ruloes are to learn, I'm having trouble understanding the Super System rules... but I have only read them, instead of trying to play. Hopefully it all becomes clearer when you play (as is often the case with most rules, anyway).

Thanks for that!

I actually played this game last night. Really, really fun. It's quite exciting customising your characters, and the combat system isn't hard to pick up at all (the basics anyway).

I think there's a support forum, too?

I've been working on learning/reviewing SuperSystem 3rd Ed rulebook on and off over the past few months now and I must admit, it's quite a flexible system.

I haven't seen the new Pulp City rulebook first-hand, but based on the free PDF rules for PulpCity, I have to say that for me SuperSystem seems a lot more robust all around.

What Pulp City has going for it is that the guy who created and owns PulpCity/PulpMonsters is loaded, and he clearly pours money into the game and makes the models HE wants to have made. The Pulp City models are definitely some of the very best super hero/villan models that money can buy, sculpted by some of the industries best sculpting talents. But the guy is creating the super hero game that HE wants to see made, and the heroes and villains that HE sees fit only.

Thankfully the guy has a good imagination, because I can't really knock the stuff he's done thus far, but as a player you're limited to playing the IP heroes and villains that exist in Pulp City.

In SuperSystem you could use the Pulp City models and create your own heroes and back stories for them, and play them as you see fit. So Pulp City is great for what it is, but in terms of scope and player vision, it's quite limited. The SuperFigs models are also a fraction of the cost of Pulp City models, and granted some aren't nearly as nice, but there are some really nice SuperFigs models to be had, many for less than half the cost of a single Pulp City model.

Not to mention with SuperSystem you could use ANY model you want, and Reaper also has a wide variety of Super models these days that are not only very affordable, but quite nice, sculpted by some of the very same people sculpting many of the Pulp City models. Actually James Van Schaik works for Reaper too, and they have the super hero models he sculpted for them for as little as $3.99 each. Most PulpCity models are 7.99 Euro each/$10.60 USD or more.

The SuperSystem 3d Ed rulebook in print I believe is $25, versus the new Pulp City printed rulebook at roughly $34 USD. The shipping from Poland to the US is quite brutal too from what I've seen quoted online too. Plus there's a PDF version of SuperSystem 3rd Ed for just $11 USD too.

They're both great games, but those are the biggest differences that I'm aware of between the two systems.

Completely agree with this. Good post.
