BTW, if you don't have an 'ü' ue an 'ue', it's basically the same.

We dispatched the umlaut out of English in a fit of Anglo-Norman Efficiency.

Now the assembled ranks of the Germanic Langauge Academy are here, can I ask what "cyberman" is in proper German? - And by "cyberman" I mean part human (most importantly the brain), and mostly robot body.

"I still don't get it," said New Guy. Doc groaned and covered his face with his hands. I threw the butt of my cigarette as far as it would go. Sarge's eyes tightened even harder, which was pretty impressive.

"That's called a Tin Man," said Sarge, pointing to the wreck of the machinenmensch. "They're very, very valuable. You can capture them. You get six days in Paris for every one of these that we can haul in."

"But what's the difference between a Tin Man and a Ro?" whined New Guy.

"Tin Men are like officers. They control the Ros. Get the Tin Man to surrender, the Ros shut down. Our lives get easier."

New Guy still didn't understand. He also didn't understand that he had just put a 75mm hole through our six-day leave in Paris.

"Can I paint something on the gun shield?" he asked.

"No," said Sarge. "Because the only thing dumber than killing a Tin Man is admitting to it."

We ended up planting a Luger on it, to tell the MI guys that it drew on us. Lugers were worth $20 in the rear. New Guy cost the entire truck six days in Paris, and me $20 in cash. It was a long time before I could speak civilly to him.

Pretty much. The ones that do are generally imported. If it's pronounced with a 'k' sound it's spelled with a 'K'... like Katzen... a 'ch' in English (cheese for instance) would be a 'K' in German too (Käse)... if it's a 'c' pronounced with an 's' in other languages, chances are it starts with a 'Z' in German, like 'Zentrale' or 'Zentrum' (actually, these are the only c-z swaps I can think of).

Hope I got my Umlauts right there...

Sieht mir gut aus, Rotes Oerkchen (oder "Schaut mia guad os!").

I speak German reasonably well (and Bavarian farmer dialect, too ).

I just suddenly realized that I couldn't think of a single word starting with "C".  I even looked in a few on-line dictionaries and only found "Chor" which is not really German.  I thought - Sowas gibt's nicht!  (Actually, I thought "des gibt's ja nit!"

That's one more than me, the only one I could think of, I assumed was cheating because it's a place-name - Celle, near Hanover. I don't know for certain, but I suspect it's derived from Latin 'cella', and there was a hermitage there.

Oder, ,,Rotes Oerkchen''? Ich bin kein Koebeln, Erik! Ich bin ,,Uruk-Hohes''!

And other such silliness.

It's an affectionate diminutive...  :)

Actually, I'm not sure why I put in the "chen", come to think of it.   lol
